How did they build such a reliable engine?
>>
why is it mounted centre-right (from the POV of the driver)?

Dunno, but it's not that unusual, plenty of cars do this

hmm

is it really? thinking about getting a defender, its the last of the bullet proof and solid 4x4's (ok landcruiser 70 exist but its a bitch to get in europe) but im kinda thinking the 2,4 is the version to go for? partially because any slav backyard mechanic can fix it and have spare parts for it since its a transit engine.

The engines are reliable. The problem is that everything around it is utmost shit.

1) LHD versions give you so few space for your feet it ain't even funny. That's because the tranny is too far to the left and they just did a bad job of converting an originally RHD vehicle. In general any Defender offers ridiculously tight space for its general size.
2) Brits connected steel to aluminum parts. Read about galvanic corrosion.
3) They are ridiculously overpriced because every rich asshole wants one and then notices that they really don't drive like a modern car. In fact, ride quality sucks hard because, guess what, they are built for off-road conditions.
4) While the TD engines are reliable you gotta keep in mind that it's all but impossible to find any reasonably priced (LMAO...) Defender that has less than 300k kilos on the odo.

They don't say "Land Cruiser: Driving, Land Rover: Wrenching" for nothing. Get an LC Prado, they are just as reliable and fixable by any backyard slavoid but they are better trucks in general.
If you want a pickup look for a 1st gen Isuzu D-Max with the 3.0 Diesel. I don't know why but they are rather cheap while being overall solid vehicles.

bmw has the engine tilted, so that only one side of the engine is coated in oil.

I don't know, you tell us what this engine has better than the competition.
I had a naturally aspirated 4D56 that hit 700k km and now I have a turbo diesel 4D56 that is about 550k km
Also the Nissan TD and YD engines are running 3/4 of europe's agriculture for nearly 4 decades without breaking a sweat.
I really don't know what you mean.
>>28701510
how about a v6 pajero? naturally aspirated V6, about +50% more torque, +100% more hp, double wishbones in all corners, unibody chassis, 3300kg tow in europe, 3500kg in USA I think.

lmao, my dads rhd defender has fuck all room foryour feet, I cannot believe that it'd be even worse for the lhd versions
>>
>>28699249
I don't think it is, I think that's a cover for the fuel pump.
>>
>>28701584
Trust me, it is. I'm a completely average Anon. Been driving a 2004 Prado for years now. When a buddy bought himself a TD5 Defender 110 I took it for a little ride and it was just ridiculous.
You need to sit in the center of the rear bench to see it but the tranny is a lot fatter on its left side.
Take literally ANY closed cab off-road truck / SUV in the Defender size range. They all got a shitton more space for the driver both LHD and RHD versions. I really dunno what the bongs thought back then.
>>
>>28699249

It's not. That's just the cover.

>>28699241

200/300 is more reliable. To the point where they built them for the armed forces right up until the end of the defender lineup
>>
>>28701584
>>28701589

No difference between the LHD and RHD versions
>>
>>28701555
toyota rust like crazy here in salt land, im about to replace rhe entire rear section of the frame on my sisters 120

not interested

in general, except the unobtainium 70series, jap 4x4 are dead boring, say what you want but defender got sovl.
>>
>>28701855
>>gasoline
there's also a 3.2 diesel version that has double the torque of the defender.
>>jap 4x4 are dead boring
>best dakar rally car
>boring
OK
>>
Don't know about the TD5 but I had a disco 3 with the TDV6 and it went through three engines (broken cranks every time). I wouldn't call them reliable.
>>
>>28701876
come in they are not in the same class, if i wanted a suv with all its comforts i wouldnt look at defender in the first place.
>>
Its not reliable its just really fucking easy to fix. Landrovers are realistic, nothing lasts forever so why make it impossible to work on?
