They keep reducing the cylinders. Will there be inline 2 engines in a few years?

Why no Inline 1?

You can't just skip over 2.

EUpeons already had a few cars with inline 2 engines

fuck, inline 1 it is, then.

Already been there done that.
Brits did a bunch of thumper cars.

Also micro cars are a thing in Europe, their version of kei cars.

Lord please give me a turbo 1.2L single cylinder thumper whumper.
Oh lord please, make it a 2 stroke too.

I wonder if with modern induction and exhaust tech 2strokes are actually viable for mass market, emissions aside. Fuel injected e-turbo 2stroke inline 6 engine would go unbelievably hard, probably.

They'd also run on their own engine oil if you didn't spin the pump before starting.

out of a single cylinder
probably makes enough torque to spin the earth the opposite direction

Less is more. Inline 4s as they are is kind of ludicrous with the amount of perfomance you can get out of them with shit like the Ford RS200 Evolution getting close to 600bhp in the 80s and the newer Mercedes M139 getting close to 500bhp...at factory production baseline. As soon as you look at tuned engines you go beyond that and if your batshit crazy you can look at track made engines like Thor and Thor 2 which can go up to 3000bhp.

If you can squeeze that much out of just 4 cylinders going smaller in cylinder quantity isn't really a problem bar 4 cylinders being easier to balance compared to something like 3 cylinders. Beyond performance twin or single cylinders are just based on mere principle. Nothing comes close to reving single cylinder kinetically or audibly, it just pulls like a down syndrome's tard raging while enhanced by anabolic steroids. Two stroke twins have always been a based pick for bikes for similar reasons.
>inb4 muh top end speed
Again beyond perfomance, besides just make the cylinders bigger and half the time you won't get many opportunities to reach top speed in your car anyway even if it was a real concern. However you will certainly be doing more quick impromptu drag races at traffic lights when you come across a fag trying to fuck you around in another lane.

motorcycle twins make ~100hp out of 600-800cc of displacement, so i can actually see 1 liter ptwin making around 120-130 hp in something like a small hatch, and i wouldn't be even mad at it. Alto Works with 120 hp engine would be a really fun car to drive around town or on smaller tracks.
>>
>>28703043
Try 65-85hp. There's no way a ptwin for a regular car will get 100hp/liter, not even with a turbo. They'll be gunning for just enough torque at low revs not to bog down at a green light.
>>
>>28703043
Motorcycles make power at cost of lower torque though
>>
>>28703057
And motorcycles can have low torque because they are very light compared to normal cars

Suzuki's 1.4L k14c i4 for their cheap-ish swift sport makes ~160 with just an ECU flash and can somewhat reliably (for around 60-90k miles) push out 200+ with basic mods. 100-130hp one liter twin seems very feasible to me, especially if we consider that engineering can smuggle a solid chunk of power in the higher revs and hide them behind emission compliant tune.
>>28703057
Power = Torque x RPM, routinely revving to 7k at each stoplight seems like a funny thing to do.

Fiat has some 0.9L i2 turbo engine that has like 100HP. Can actually be remapped to over 120HP. Sounds like a fucking bee hive.

105hp stock, almost 200Nm, 875cc of displacement. If fiat managed, anyone from big 4 can pull it off too.

You can get lancia with twinair 0.9 2 cylinder engine.
>>
>>28703703
In Poland we called it "kaszlak" - from characteristic "coughing" sound of the engine

It's called "peglica" in ex-yu, rough translation would be "small clothes iron", idk where that came from.

Ferrari attempted to make an emissions compliant 2 stroke engine.
iirc it uses ordinary poppet valves and a supercharger to avoid burning so much oil.
also liquid cooling helps allot.
