Why didn't these fucking dumbasses just use sprinter vans instead of wasting tens of millions of dollars designing some special shit mobile? This fucking country I swear.
>>
>>28735953
That I cannot tell you but it's also not my country and thus not my tax money and thus not my problem jej
>>
>>28735953
For the same reason American police don’t just use bmws. Euro shit doesn’t take abuse well, and these vehicles have to drive into the ghetto. They’ll save money in the long run making a car purpose built for the job
>>
>>28735953
Because spending tens of millions is the point. It gives the wartime manufacturers a reason to keep employees trained and on payroll between military demand surges.
>>
>they're scrapping llvs, never getting auctioned

You don't get it, they are literally scraping away our history as we speak.

They don’t. Transits and sprinters don’t last as long as chevy expresses and ecolines. Go ask anyone who runs fleets.
>>
>>28735950
I actually like how stupid it works. It's offensively utilitarian
>>
>>28736028
>chevy expresses and ecolines
okay, so use those then
>>
>>28735950
>>
>>28736057
They did, and designing a tool for the specific task of delivering mail saved them more money in the long run. The original LLV was brilliant for that very reason. The new one carries the torch, but addresses all the flaws the original had.

If the government handled its problems like it does mail service, the whole country would save billions in tax dollars over time. Instead of using bandaid solutions, actually address the problem head on.
>>
>>28736066
The original LLV was a fucking piece of shit and a nightmare to maintain. Absolute dogshit money sink in comparison to simply using freely available commercial fleet.
>>
>>28736084
Not while they were being produced. Do you actually think it’s cheaper to use a mix of random shitboxes and deal with all kinds of part suppliers (and be competing for the same parts as anyone else who uses that vehicle) than having one vehicle for the entire service and only have to train mechanics to work on one vehicle with a part supply chain that only you, the usps, use?

They already tried your idea. It didn’t work.

Clearly the solution is expressvan. Its in spirt of jeep dj and llv. It's the current meta, there are gorillions of them. Parts are everywhere. They can take bigger volume than an llv so we can continue subsidizing temu and amazon.
However average mail carrier these days is a 4'8" middle aged obese Guatemalan woman. They had to design a vehicle they can see out off.
>>
>>28736104
No, I think it's cheaper to use a fleet of good Ford Transits. Like every other fucking courier service in the US.
This is straight up bloat man. Zero need for it, grumman doesn't know shit, transit fleet mechanics are dime a dozen, the parts are a dime a dozen, they are consumer grade and thus cheap and available. This is so dumb like for real we gon find you belie dat home boy.

The USPS where I live is switching to the smaller Mercedes Metris vans and I still see LLVs every now and then. I doubt they're going to switch to that NGDV van since they literally just switched to the Mercedes vans in the last few months.
It's somewhat funny since they keep the Mercedes badging off of them, as if NPCs would be pissed at the USPS thinking they're wasting money for buying Mercedes vans when they're built in the US and far cheaper to just buy than developing a purpose-built vehicle from scratch for the same purpose.

>it really depends
On what, the longer distances that European police don’t have to drive?
The car chases that Rarely happen?
The far fewer response calls so many of them don’t even have to leave their post?

What are the things European fleets supposed to be good at?
>are police soccer mom explorers good
Compared to euro shit, yes. Imagine beating up on a bmw lol. Europeans already complain that we don’t keep up with maintenance enough and that is why their cats fail prematurely here. Imagine abusing them the way American police do.
>>
>>28736296
Not to mention most European roads are like suburban American roads. Most American roads are like rural Vietnam.
>>

That's what peak performance looks like.

Just explain its patriotism military contractor thank you for your service do you hate America...??? and that's enough to have them defend it. They don't care about the logistics and lifecycle management or overall costs, they're fucking morons.
>>
>>28735953
I don't know why America does it's mail so weird. They would save a lot of money by delivering mail on foot and using community mailboxes. Neither requires a special vehicle. I guess it's like designing a space pen instead of just using a pencil. Such is the American way.

They ride really nice. I've driven a couple of them now as I've had to replace a few of the windshields. Visibility is really good.

It's a really strange sensation as they feel a lot bigger than they are as you sit relatively low.

I don't know why they chose to put the camera low. I've had to do two replacements for rock chips that could've been repaired had they not interfered with the lense area.
>Random small chunk of sheet metal dead center of the roof line has a tendency to try and catch fiber tools
>Top wiring harness is sometimes installed in a such a way connectors get caught by fiber tools

It's to awkward & tight to cold knife the top and where the mirrors are attached.

Also I'm not sure if the manufacturer is hand installing these themselves or if they have some crazy quality control problems at the factory. I've seen some crazy factory beads and these are pretty wild.

I worked as a rural carrier assistant for 18 months.

Their transmissions would explode under the demands of mail trucks. These things go 0-15 mph from mailbox to mailbox and kill fleet vehicles regularly.

You basically need an understressed engine with a transmission with thick gears and tons of ATF in the sump. The Sprinter (and Metris) does not meet those needs.

>>
>>28735953
Nobody gave you the real reason which is that the postal service is ergonomic maxxing
The van is designed to be comfortably operated by the very tall and the very short, which is why it’s shape is so odd
Avoiding repetitive strain injuries is the money saver
So it’s both easy for a midget to step into the vehicle and see out of it, and a really tall person can still be totally upright in the back
>>
>>28735953
it doesn't """create""" enough jobs.

you pay an US auto manufacturer to make 200k mail trucks or whatever and it's not that hard because they make millions of vehicles a year across the world. they leverage an existing platform, like a heavy duty van, and maybe tweak a few things like the interior standing height of the vehicle and building in a mail storage rack. it's a done deal.

or you (a US congressman) can pay oshkosh (because they bribed you with drugs, money, and child sex slaves) to build the same product. of course oshkosh has no experience with this sort of thing, because most of their products are low production volume 30 ton armored ZOGmobiles. instead they have to create a massive number of jobs designing the vehicle from scratch, subject it to testing and redesign and safety certification, learn how to build (and then actually build) factories capable of pumping out 200k mail vehicles, set up service centers that can fix these pieces of shit when they inevitably break, etc.

I can see how in dense leafy suburbs that general shape would work nicely, since it's like a mini-mailroom on wheels the driver can stand up in and easily step up & down from, never mind the very good visibility close to the ground where kids and pets are likely to be around. Of course the design isn't suited to rural areas like the one I live in now, where 70mph is the average in 55 zones even when crosswinds average 30, gusting to 60.. Naturally that shit would tip over on the interstate drive I took today, but, in, say, Munster IN or Oak Lawn IL it's convenient.

No ac, shit heater, uncomfortable interior, breaks down constantly, slow, bad gas mileage, bad visibility, there's basically nothing good you can say about them from an objective standpoint.

Function over form. It's beautiful if it works and doesn't breakdown.

You think the new one won't be a more expensive massive piece of shit? Whew lad!

so no one can buy a sprinter van, put USPS shit on it and steal mail.

I'm sure they'll be really nice for a couple years at least. At least compared to an LLV
>>
>>28735950
The LLV is at least 300% less ugly though.

Hooning FFVs on snow-covered rural roads is a blast
>>
>>28735950
Why they couldn't just update the llv with a better drivetrain?
>>

That works when you live in a place with 1000's of people stacked on top of each other in dense urban infrastructure but explain to me how you are supposed to foot deliver mail in a hellhole like this

It's only expensive because nobody is making aftermarket glass for it yet.

A fullsize OEM Ford Transit windshield is far cheaper than a Ford Bronco windshield. Iirc OEM transit glass is ~250 shop cost, whereas OEM bronco glass is ~500. You can get aftermarket options for even less.

Size ≠ cost

When we did the replacement we had to wait for a Oshkosk service rep to come in to recalibrate the camera.

It's not some ultra durable glass. I'm surprised dow corning didn't manage to get their GORILLA glass into the vehicle.

I saw one of these in person yesterday
Holy fuck they're HUGE

Cost, ease of repair, and long-life testing. Honestly the old vehicle was bomb as fuck, and the new one is built by Ford, so it's a bomb of another type, a ticking time bomb, to be exact.

>a hellhole like this

Nope. They were cheaper and better than dealing with miscellaneous shitboxes.
>>
>>28745788
Look, man. You didn't have them when they were new. Everything else was worse, then the vehicles themselves outlived their service life, so sure, it seems like a shit vehicle now, but it did way more than the competition. In three decades, these new vehicles will be seen as shit if they aren't already Ford shitboxes.

You can buy them, anon.

You just can't register them for road use.
