American zogbot living in the Tokyo/Yokohama area. A friend has a manual 2007 Subaru WRX (not STI) with aprox 110k miles on it he's selling for $6k USD. The car has been worked on, engine gasket changed, forged pistons, new plugs, NOS (lol yes), and the stock suspension replaced with a racing suspension, the stock suspension is also incu with the car. Its also not due for the shaken inspection for another two years which fyi is a PITA in weeb/nip land.KBB is useless for RSD cars and the Japanese VIN/Chassis No. isnt comparable. I still feel like I can get a better deal for a car especially since I don't gaf about racing shit. Thoughts? My other choices for sourcing a used car is going to the lemon lots/motor pool on base buying from a nip directly. The lemon lot cars consist of litteral old ass surplus/DRMO HMMWV's or mystery condition cars that have been ran through by Pvt. Lopez like a Kabukicho jiria-Kei soapland/street girl.Buying a car from a Japanese national is a massive pita title and registration wise vs buying from a SOFA member. There is also military auto source but imo they are scamy camp follower kikes and the vehicles are LSD for people going back to the states (im here permanently). Driving a LSD car in Japan sucks.
>>28739799That car sounds cool as fuck. If you don't want that then what do you want. Jesus fuck
>>28739808The fuck...? I do want it. It's just the conventional means of valuing a car go out the window considering its a foreign country and so much work done on it.To me a layman it sounds like a good deal..? But im basing my decision on convienice and metrics like mileage. Tl;dr is it a good deal or am I getting bent over?
>>28739819yeah good deal m9
Carsensor
A few things:1) I also think you can get a better dealI wouldn't say you're getting bent over, but whoever is selling a 110k mile subaru in japan for 6k is doing alright. more than alright.look for compsLike this onehttps://www.car-byebuy.com/Trade/Cars/Details/19860That's an 08 sti with 152000 km (under 100k miles) for 5.3k usd.Car has been repaired (flagged as "repair history"). Maybe yours has too? You don't mention that, who knows. Not surprising in old cars.Shaken is due in june 2026, but if you have the time to do it yourself it's not hard to pass at all if the car is stock. It's just some paperwork and a hassle (time).I think that for 6k you should be able to get either a wrx in slightly better condition than the one you're looking at, or an sti in similar condition to the one you're looking at (modded etc).2) look up what you'll be spending on weight tax, road tax, compulsory insurance, optional insurance per year. chat gpt will help you. Make sure it considers old car (13+, 18+) additional fees in the calculation. You'll probably realize that saving a grand or two in purchase price isn't really worth it, if that couple grand can get you into a much nicer car.3) In japan cars with high miles aren't worth much. People just don't want a high mileage car. So you need to figure what you'll do when you're done with it, and price that in. If you can sell it on to another sucker on base, great. If not, your car might be worth very near worth zero in the civilian market.4) I don't like shifting with my left hand. For 6k usd (900k jpy) I'd personally get something like thishttps://www.carsensor.net/usedcar/detail/AU6551556463/index.htmlA 2015 levorg 2.0t with 50k miles. CVT only, no MT version exists.Eyesight (adaptive cruise), memory heated seats, wagon.Something you can't get in the states.
>>28739908It be nice if I could just plug in the VIN/Chassis number and get a baseline but it's not a thing here.Dealing with nips to buy a car is cancerous. Hence why I havent used carsensor or the like. Its so much easier to register and pay the tax/compuls.insur when its an Amerifart to Amerifart sale. Its a big reason why im leaning into this purchase. If had a perfect world I would bring my LHD 2020 subaru forester from the states or buy a new forester here in Japan. But I don't need to drive here and I am gone 6 to 4 months out of the year anyway. Having this would just be for the weekends and vanity. Also I fucking hate taking the trains here and dealing with all the jeet/eurofag tourists and idiotic high school kids during the rushhour.I don't plan on selling the car anytime time soon/give a shit about newer cars. I'm about to buy a simple house and I've frugally. I could easy pass it on to some dumbass marine or sailor if the worst came to worst and I need to leave for good.
>>28739799Use the SBI car insurance website insurance calculator to get a valuation for your car (there’s an option I believe to do a fixed value replacement cost and the lowest number is probably what the car is worth). You don’t have to put in any personal info, just model code (can get from goo net), etcYou’ll get much better prices buying from japanese, but it’s also more hassle. Shaken isn’t bad at all. I just did it and it was a joke. As long as you keep the car maintained it’s basically a piece of cake. Do user shaken, don’t waste $1k having someone do it for you. Goo net gives you a good dealer price, but you can also check YAJ and auction sites if you want the best deals and are willing to wait.
Have you looked at goo-net? Probably the biggest 2nd hand car site.Or jmty.jp is their version of Craigslist
>modified, non sti, blew up the first engine, 110k miles for 6k
>>28739799Never ever ever ever ever ever get a modified impreza.
>>28740011Curious Are you actually a Jap? On on a visa/base nigger?I take care of all my maintenance on my previous vehicles myself back in the states. The only thing I dont touch is brake work. Ive never done the Shaken before but everyone says its a pita.Just dealing with the hassle alone (registration, proof of parking other BS) is why I perfer a trade with another zogbot. They are already trying to force me to convert my SoFa drives license to a Japanese one and put me through the humiliation rituals of doing a driver's test run by some bitter sexless 70+ obasan that auto fails forginers.>>28740152Im not super versed in subarus except foresters but is a wrx based on an impreza? Also why do some '10 trims of the wrx have a wagon look while other have a sedan trim? Pls don't bully ください>>28740119I haven't, I'll check it out.
>>28739799>riding a car in nipponlandA 100 pound 4'11 japchick rides these beast why can't you anon? Are you a faggot? I've lived there and train + motorcycle / scooter are the best way to commute or travel thereMamacharis are based too.
>>28739799>6k for a WRX that's been ruined by another mankek, 4 and a half max
>>28740530Not a jap, just done a lot of car shit in japan and elsewhere. If you’re SOFA why would they be trying to give you a jap license? Is it the locals or the base? Jap bureaucrats seethe because as SOFA you’re basically exempt from all their regulatory bs. You should have a 4EJ and that’s it, you will probably need to go through zogbot insurance companies and take a quick road rules written test on base to get your 4EJ, but that’s it and it’s totally up to the US military, not the Jap DMV, so they can seethe at tokyo. Shaken itself involves a lot of paperwork (proof of parking, ownership docs, ensuring taxes are up to date, map of parking spot etc.) but the shaken inspection itself is not bad, especially if you’ve already done the paperwork once. Just google how to fill out the forms, get them done in the right order (proof of parking from police (buy 25 months of jibsiseki insurance from any car dealership within a month of your shaken date, since you need 24 months left when taking it in that way 25 months gives you 30 days of buffer).Places charge like $600+ for paperwork alone, which is awful unless they’re transporting the car a long distance. If your shaken expires you can get temp plates for 5 days from the local ward office or wherever (maybe on-base too, dunno) and it’s like a $10 fee.As long as your tires have tread, you don’t have visible leaks, and the suspension arms etc aren’t fucked you’ll be fine. Also all the basic stuff like horn sticker/identifier on the wheel, sidebrake needs to work, all lights need to work, etc. They didn’t even check my rear tires and missed an oil leak so I wouldn’t say it’s crazy. You may fail for headlight alignment though, so be sure to be able to fix that since you can retry on the same day for free. Brake pad/rotor wear is also checked and mufflers need JASMA seal/paperwork. https://youtu.be/dssSdWp6yP0?si=hl6w0cRH1mjtyCQk
>>28740530Also, if you’re doing an in countrt ETS you can do a 外免切り替え and just convert your 4EJ straight to a japanese license. Car may require shaken again (even if it has a valid one with time remaining) and you may have to do a vision/reaction speed test but you don’t have to do the full thing from what I remember.
>>28741218You'll understand one day when you become an actual adult and do things like owning a house/biz, work a non vagabond shitty english teaching weeb job in asia. Also having a car is basically instant sex for westerners in Japan. An actual motorcycle license is a pita.>>28741295Because technically im a civilian now residing here but yeah it should be an easy xfer. Its the bugmen in town seething not the base people. I have my 4EJ already. I can understand some aspect of the hate becuase the test is Pathetically easy and even fucking officers and pilots have failed an 18 question test asking shit like what color is the stop sign lol. >>28741254The engine was rebuilt to spec? Wouldn't you want to do that for an older car anyway?
>>28739799What matters is whether you trust this individual or not. Buying from someone else is a roll of the dice.
>>28742130I don't he's the glowiest glowie there is. But so am I.
>>28740530>is a wrx based on an impreza? The wrx is just a trim level of the impreza. Imprezas are the naturally aspirated economy car, wrx and sti are the sporty supercharged versions. They're great cars and are very reliable when kept stock, but mods typically absolutely rape their reliability with little benefit. > Also why do some '10 trims of the wrx have a wagon look while other have a sedan trim?Because they made multiple body styles, there's a sedan (4 door) and a hatch (5 door). Identical car other than the back end of it.
>>28742185turbocharged*I don't know why I had superchargers on the mind.
>>28742130>DealerAnd a dealer isnt a dice roll either?
>>28739799>buying a modified subaruWill be lots of fun while it lasts but you'll be joining me soon enough.
>>28742103>Also having a car is basically instant sex for westerners in Japan>buying a car for sexif you can't get laid even without a car then you need to git gud at your game or improve your looks and personality firstCar is not efficient in transporting your ass from point a to point b in the concrete jungle of Japan. Not to mention it costs more. If I have a family then yes a car is nice but I'll be getting a wife and with at least two kids first before I'm buying one.
>>28742593>No-car poors mental gymnastics, yoked to the mass train time table Dynamo.Hate the game not the player. Not having a car with Japanese girls is a deal breaker up there with hight and weight. Also the flex of being able to say, " Dont worry about the last train I can drive you back hits hard like you would not belive. Often going back to my apartment. Also the majority of Japan is infact more rural than most of the US. It just seems that way becuase the towns/cities are built so dense.
>>28742607Forgot pic this is litterally like what 98% of the country looks like. There's no real suburbs here. If you're in Okinawa rip becuase its even more spread out rural and barely any mass transit at all.
>>28742607>Hate the game not the playerIm not hating and from the looks of it you're not getting any in nippon land, thus needing a car for that. Kind of pathetic desuI remember the tons of chicks I pulled just by riding a scooter there a decade ago. Fun times but I don't care much about chicks anymore.>>28742610perfect scenery to ride a motorcycle.
>>28739799Just get an E39 or E92; they were both designed by Koji Ichimaru or whatever
>>28742642
>live in Japan>buy a car that you can easily get back homeWhy? At least get a Subaru with an ej207 or something interesting.
OP死ね
>>28742935>>28742638Can a man just drive?>>28742662Whats the story with this pic? Also aren't subaru boxer engines pretty easy to work with?
>>28742607>>28742103In that case it should be as simple and bringing in your 4EJ and maybe a JAF translation of your US license (they’re trying to clamp down on foreign license transfers because chink tourists keep running over schoolchildren so they recently changed the rules). > Not having a car with Japanese girls is a deal breaker up there with hight and weight.lol, no. But it is a major plus that sets you apart from 80% of men when you have a nice car. For whatever reason Japanese girls love being driven around and just talking.
>>28742593> Car is not efficient in transporting your ass from point a to point b in the concrete jungle of Japanlol, this is so out of touch. Here’s car vs train at basically rush hour leaving a major city. Cars are basically as fast / faster than trains for anything except when you’re competing with the Shinkansen. If the train lines match up perfectly with your destination then they’re not bad, but when your destination isn’t near a station/requires multiple transfers trains start taking much longer. This, of course, totally ignores every other advantage of a car (more comfortable, lets you do stuff like carry big/heavy stuff, etc.) >inb4 poorfag cope about money
>>28743378m8 if you're looking at subarus in japan and not looking for a gc8 (first gen) sti, you're doing it wrong.
>>28743378>Whats the story with this pic? It's an engine I helped drop out of a totalled NSX when I lived in Suzuka
>>28739799I haven't seen anyone mention it yet, but if you're in Japan, you have access to one of the coolest cars subaru ever made.
>>28739799>NOS>Subaru 2.5You're fooked. Just start saving for when you spin a bearing and keep on top of oil changes like a fucking hawk until then.
>>28744537This is what I'm saying >>28742662 Get a Forester STI or a Legacy TBSTI or GD STI with am ej207 (forged pistons, 8k redline, 280hp) or hell you could also look into early Mitsubishi Evos. So much cooler stuff than a normal 07 WRX shitbox
>>28744537OP here, I have a 2020 forester back stateside. I was ligitimatly thinking of shipping it here to Japan, but it would be the same cost buying a used car. The shipping/registration and worked on to be road legal. No to mention its would be LSD car in a left side road country. My friend has a 2011 F-150 that he was willing to give to me for free, I was almost considering shipping it to Japan just for the memes and really engage the stereotype of Americans.
>>28744785the forester sti is nothing like a normal foresterit's a 300hp sports car drivetrain slapped into a forester
>>28744827Oh shit I got my forester because I needed big car with a trailer hitch and a bike rack when I was still in the military to move my shit since I didn't trust the movers to not steal my stuff.
rebuilding an 03 ej251 on the kitchen floor rn, should i use ej253 torque specs (10nm, then 18nm, then 40nm for some, and 90 degrees for the rest) for case bolts or ej251 torque specs (15nm, then 90 degrees)?
>>28739799>2007 Subaru WRX>I don't gaf about racing shit. The decent performance is basically everything that car would offer. The interior is this shitty plastic and it has atrocious milage.
>>28744537To me the forester always felt like it was made for people ''too quirky xddd'' to just drive an Impreza.
