My dad has a can of white car spray paint I could use, but how much would a body shop charge to fix this?
>>28741505Don't spray any paint over it without removing all of that rust first, or it will keep rusting underneath the paint
>>28741505The rust goes way further than you can see. Look at the way it's poking through next to the glass, on the edge of the panel where the paint is thinnest. You need to sand back the paint to find the edges of the rust, cover the whole patch with some POR-15 primer, and then you can paint over it.
>>28741521>>28741541How much would it cost for a body shop to do this? Or is this very much a DIY thing with easy to find materials?
>>28741550Why don't you bring it to multiple body shops for estimates you can decide on? Also you should quote one of the local automotive glass shops to have your front and rear glass removed while it's in the shop. You'll get a much better end result
>>28741550One gorillion dollars.
>>28741505How does that even happen?Birdpoop never cleaned off? That looks like rear windshield so you wouldn't even get rock chips there
>>28741559I'll do that. As for the glass, I plan on selling the car a year or two from now, so I just want the rust off mainly.
>>28741505Wire brush or steel mesh scouring pad or 60 grit sandpaper to expose any rust under the paint around the spotScuff smooth with green scotchbrite padSpray some rustoleum rust dissolver gel, follow the directionsWipe clean with 90+% alcohol, apply primer and colour matched paint and clear coat
>>28741576It'll sell for a better price if the windshield isn't covered in overspray
>>28741689Masking tape and newspaper / cut up garbage bag goes a long way anon.
>>28741541POR-15 is so fucking expensive now though and this is just a bit of surface rust. The OP is trying to save money. I would just sand, clean then passivate with mild acid then paint and clearcoat. Luckily it's white too so no need to pay extra for color match touchup paint.
>>28741688couldn't he just skip straight to the rustoleum gel? i did this to fix some rust on my c pillar after i accidentally gouged it with an ice scraper. seems to be holding up.
>>28741550>How much would it cost for a body shop to do this?Alot, they don't just paint the spot, normally they paint the whole panel and adjacent panels to blend the color in depending on the location. Usually $1000+ In your case there are no adjacent panels, but to do it right they would have to remove the rear window and paint over the edge of the panel, still looking at probably $1k.
>>28741505just make sure you don't fuck up a ton of space around it. Essentially limit your work area and stick to that spot. Tape it off.You will need to sand, and make sure you don't sand the area AROUND the affected area too far.Easiest way to do it is probably paint spot filler w/ clear coat from manufacturer. Honda, at least, has these.> tape off with tiny margin > sand rust off> 3 - 5 coats of paint> sand> clear coat> sand> polishThere are rules for finer and finer grit. It won't be perfect, but it's better than trying to get it perfgect and expanding past the affected area.
>>28741573>How does that even happen?Looks similar to old cars where the paint has worn thin so I'm thinking it was just thin to begin with.
>>28741942>there's only one shade of white
>>28741942You can't 'passivate' iron with any old acid. If you put acetic or hydrochloric on there and don't do anything afterwards it's just going to mean even more rust.
>>28741962https://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-300112-Rust-Dissolver-Gel/dp/B07HSHZZ79?tag=ustxtaddt-20&th=1I was going to buy this. Will it work?
>>28743272Not unless you're going to sand back the paint to find the edges of the rust. Given your general laziness in response to actual helpful information and your inability to google things, I'm going to assume that's a no.
>>28741505thought it was a bunny rabbit from the thumbnailwas disappointed when i opened the image:(
>>28741505>My dad has a can of white car spray paintJesus Christ at least do the minimum effort to read your door tag and find the paint code to properly match the color with a rattle can. You know they make this stuff right and it takes no effort to figure it out? What compels you """people""" to just put any shade of paint on a car as touch up? I see this all the time irl. What is wrong with you people? With muh trugg I got the Arizona Beige from a local auto store to paint my cab corner covers to hide the face that my cab corner no longer exist and I got my pacifica blue pearl on ebay for the fender flares on this picrel shitbox. Do it correctly you fucking monogoloid.
>>28745716No, the paint actually matches. We both have pearly white cars and the can is exactly that. I'm not that autistic, faggot
>>28741505If you want to do it kinda right way. Sand it, use some rust converter, prime over that, then paint and clear. It won't be perfect but you have to stop the rust or it will just continue.
