https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=db3CRxTmzv0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xn2MJqPOmSIAre you following the restoration of (probably) the only legally privately owned GM EV1?tl;dr so far>university forgets they have an ev1>is found in a collapsed garage with a broken windscreen>moved out of the garage into the open>damaged old vehicle with no plates gets marked as an abandoned vehicle by campus police>towed/impounded>tow yard goes through the process to alert the owners, is naturally difficult>eventually gets legal ownership and sends it to auction>sells for $104k (+tip)>restoration is being documented in the videos aboveI find it all very interesting, and with the tear down we're seeing stuff that has never been seen by the majority of people before.Even if you are foaming at the mouth with your hatred of EVs, you must admit this is a significant piece of automotive history, and one of the rarest privately owned vehicles.in the world.
neat
>>28743231I ain't fan of EV. In fact I hate most electric cars and their users but I'm glad that they are restoring EV1. Too bad that other 90s electric cars got scraped like this retarded honda stuck between hatchback and crossover
>>28743231It's cool but I still hate it because someone paid $104k for it. It ain't worth that no matter the historical significance.
>>28743807post-covid retardation is the most likely explanation for its final price.i think it'll be cool to see what makes this thing tick.and gm is probably seething right now
>>28743807>>28743809It was a bunch of EV nerds all bidding against eachother. It's not worth what he paid, correct, but at the same time you will never get another one, so it's like what's easier to get, $100k, or an EV1?
>>28743809idk but that price just angers me, if it's yard find it should have costed couple hundred bucks. For $104k I would rather see it go to a crusher than getting restored, fuck that shit.
>>28743807it'll be worth millions in 10-20 years>>28743812>costedcost, stupid mutt
>>28743812good marning sar
>>28743812i'll only be annoyed if the guy tries to be a flipping faggot and sell it for more than what he paid without doing much, if anything at all, to it.but if it ends up being preserved or driven a lot then that's a much better outcome
>>28743821Polish spellchecker strikes again...
>>28743822Literally the first things in the OP are them restoring it. Jesus Christ, just hover over the links and you can see from the thumbnail how much work they've already done.
>>28743818>cost, stupid muttI'm euro slav that's why the butchery of engrish but when did this place became so r3ddit to correct fucking grammar?
The only thing I don't like about this is some (((towing))) yard getting $100k for it. Completely undeserved.
>>28743825i know. that's why i'm not annoyed
I'd be more worried about the original leaser coming after him, from what I've heard he's a litigious jew who took both GM and Toyota to court over them cancelling his leases, which I believe both companies had the right to do as per the contract. He also falsely leased it under his sister's name in CA, while he lived (and drove it) in CO, which killed the batteries constantly, requiring warranty replacement, and was then outraged when GM said he couldn't have it back after dropping it off for yet another battery replacement.
>>28743863this is why I can't believe GM cancelled and scrapped all EV1s, GM should leave the maintance to owners and within 5 years all electric cars would be scrapped already
>>28743864From my understanding they made the EV1s because California was bringing in some zero emission vehicle bullshit, but then ended up canning it a few years later, but part of the deal said vehicles needed 15 years of support, which GM didn't want to fuck with, as they already didn't like the cars/EVs, and only did it in the first place so they could continue to sell cars in their biggest market.
>>28743863>I'd be more worried about the original leaser coming after himThis was the best way to acquire the car. There are certain expectations of impound auctions. There's a clearly defined legal process to transfer ownership. Due diligence is on the impound/auction yard and any financial ruling would be directed to them, not the new owner. With any court order the buyer would keep the car and whoever transfered the title would be stuck with any financial restitution.
>>28743829The legal victory that nobody else has achieved is factored into the value.
>>28743807EV1 is worth as much as a turbine car imho
>>28743699I don't hate electric vehicles, I hate modern vehicles. So an electric vehicle from 30 or 40 years ago? Hell yeah!
>find 80 year old car parked in a swamp>get engine running with some lubricant and a hammer >find 30 year old EV >have to replace the entire drivetrain the future is fucking grim
>>28745209GM chopped the wiring up and everything's proprietary. Imagine if you found a 30 year old Chevy with an experimental race engine, but they took all the conrod caps. You can't use the cranks, you can't use the pistons, you can't use the head with stock pistons because of imminent piston-valve superposition, you have to either replace or remake half the engine to get it working again.
>>28745209>replace the entire drivetrainNot really? The electric motor is fine. The main problem is when GM prepped the ~40 EV1s to be donated to universities, they removed the battery pack and its harness, the brake torque control module, one of the boards in the power inverter module and cut the ribbon cable to it, the charger port, the airbags, and a few other modules. Since the first gen EV1s used lead acid batteries in the pack (later ones had NiMH) they would be trash now even if they were still there, but the main struggle in getting this thing driveable again is replacing all the unobtainium computers they removed (and rebuilding the two junction modules that got water damaged.) Thankfully they used the same charger and mostly the same PIM as the S10 EV, so those were able to be swapped right over from a donor.
>>28743231For once OP wasn't a faggot
>>28743827Hello newfag
>>28743231The "dude" who won the auction sounds like a massive faggot though. It's really hard to listen to the video whenever he starts babbling.
>>28746264What did you expect from someone who is such an EV fanatic that he'd spend $100k on a trashed EV that may never be driveable again?
>>28743231ive been pretty up to date on it but i havent finished the latest video because it was longer than i expected and i didnt have the time to finish it
