>bike has almost 100k km
>changed the spark plug with the recommended one (exactly the same as the one installed)
>pretty sure it was still the factory spark plug, very worn down (pic related)
Starts much better but the engine now is heating up much more, I felt the heat on the seat and while riding, the crankcase burns to the touch when I stop. It didn't get so hot before
The coolant temp is still ok (used to stay at a quarter but now goes until the middle of the gauge)

What the fuck is going on? I'm thinking in putting the old plug back in I don't want to grenade my bike
>>
>>28749196
RARE EXCEPTION ONLY APPROVED DURING WINTER
>>
>>28749202
I'm wondering if it was sad and ill before you swapped the plugs.
The gauge ought to be in the middle.
>>
>>28749213
I've thought about that but I don't notice much difference in performance. I do hear a bit more backfiring when I rip it.
Only changed it because it's been taking a bit more to start, now it starts right up
>The gauge ought to be in the middle.
In the summer it went up to the middle but only some times
>>
>>28749202
middle of the gauge is still fine anon but if the difference is too noticeable it could be that the previous spark was about to die
>>
>>28749202
if the bottom end is overheating your not getting lubrication. check and change the oil and while your at it check if your running lean
>>
>>28749227
I'm ok with the middle of the gauge but the engine but the engine cases seem way too hot
>>28749234
I will change the oil and see if it overheats. There is a gap between the muffler and the exhaust pipe tho, could this plus the new plug be causing the overheat?

nah. airflow would affect the top end not the bottom. is your bike air cooled? they consume oil more than liquid cooled engines and sometimes need oil added between changes if you ride them hard all the time

Thanks anon(s), now it's too dark but tomorrow I will upgrade the oil and retest the two plugs
>>
>>28749299
NP, if you can check the compression that will tell you if your piston rings need replacing. when they are worn the oil loss will rise fast. with high mileage its inevitable and a cheap simple fix especially with one piston.

1. I assume you verified that the gap on the sparkplug is in spec for your bike
2. Check your coolant / thermostat, might be out/low/improperly mixed or a stuck thermostat in the worse case
3. As a hail marry Check your bikes Fuel Pressure Regulator, take the vacuum line off and see if fuel comes out. If there is then your bike might be running hot because it's running lean.

Spark plug isn't the problem, it's a problem that's been hiding that only reared it's head from the new plugs

1. ERm... this is the first time I ever changed a plug without checking. I don't have the feeler with me here but I will get one tomorrow
2. My rad is kind of bent on the side from a crash earlier this year, never had a temperature issue though, even on the warmest summer days the needle barely went up from a quarter. When I got the bike a few years ago I did find it weird how it barely warmed up but figured it's because it's a small engine.
3. Got it, I'll check it tomorrow. I'm starting to get some engine case oring oil leaks so it would make sense other rubbers starting to break down.
>Spark plug isn't the problem, it's a problem that's been hiding that only reared it's head from the new plugs
It left me stumped, bike has been solid for years, I just rode to a place with a nice view, went for a walk, changed the plug, started like a dream, went for a ride and I felt the heat. That's it
Btw, shouldn't it be backfiring less?
>>
For you lads that have houses without a garage, where you park your bikes?
>>
>>28749245
Exhaust leaks like that can't hurt the engine but can make everything downstream to the muffler hotter sometimes causing backfiring out the exhaust.

Cheap IR temp guns are fun to play with. Your plug isn't causing the overheat and since you have EFI that means electronic ignition whose timing should not be able to drift over time.

When I want to check mixture I buy several plugs online (you can use them up as normal after doing plug chops). The AI summary of how to do a plug chop is correct (I just checked) but since that shit might change at random check a few videos.

If anything got disturbed when doing the plug replacement that could cause an intake leak (old hoses become brittle etc). I'd inspect any vacuum hoses (if bike has a vacuum petcock) and the boot between carb and engine for damage, dry rot etc.

What do any owners groups, subweddits, Fecesbook owners groups etc say about your machine? Someone will have had your problem before you did.

>>28749326
Compression testers are dirt cheap (they're just a Bourdon tube gauge, fittings and hose, ensure you get one with the right spark plug adapter size.

Never assume anything needs replacing but that many miles inspecting the valve clearances with a feeler gauge won't hurt anything. I use the go/no-go method which is reliable. (If .005" fits but .006" doesn't, .005" is correct etc)
Use the values from your service manual (which should be easy to find as a free download, factory books preferred).

After the valve clearances are set is best time to compression test. When I set valves I turn the engine over by hand then recheck valve clearances to make sure all is as it should be.

Check if a new cylinder with piston and rings is cheaper than buying a used one and having it bored by a machine shop. I'd bring the shop manual so the machinist can jot down the specs. If used heads are cheap I'd overhaul both to make the swap an easy afternoon job. Keep the removed set of course.
>>
>>28749827
No, stop with this shit. I know it works, but thinking about pushing on the side I need to turn makes me slower since I have just been intuitively doing it since I learned to ride a bike.
>>
>>28749827

>>
>>28749409
What did Yoshimura say when you contacted them?

>>28749880
Backfiring won't be a plug issue. If it were timing backfire out the intake = too far advanced and out the exhaust too far retarded, but exhaust leaks can cause that too. If the gap where your muffler is clamped to the downpipe is just a sloppy fit you might be able to cut up a beer can with snips or scissors, wrap the joint then secure with one worm drive hose clamp on the muffler and one on the downpipe to force the can to conform. It's an ancient trick.

Being a KLR I'd visit the ADVrider forums and whatever KLR fora look good. There were so many make someone will have had your problem so make a maximally detailed post to help them help you.

>bent radiator
That would explain the temp gauge rising but your thermostat (assuming your bike has one) might be stuck closed which is very bad, id go out on a limb and assume it's the original one and never been replaced. Do not ignore.
>backfiring
This is gonna sound insulting but did you absolutely thread it in properly and all the way in and not crossthreaded? Check the spark plug wires itself if your bike is carbed then you might need to adjust the fuel.
>>
>>28749882
I always put whatever I was dailying outdoors near my bedroom window. when I rented. I rarely covered my dailys but when I did I used boring gray or black tarps to blend in.

I should have bought a 20' standard height shipping container when renting, preferably a "one trip" grade, because you can have them moved in future the way they're delivered using an F350 size or larger rollback. Da wife painted the street side of our 20 in a woodland camo which makes it disappear since it's behind trees and shrubs. Containers make wonderful shops used like the military and industry use them. The bill for my cheap dehumidifiers is tiny, barely above the baseline service cost (my shops have their own service).

When I got smart about that as a homeowner I used 40' High Cube (the height is worth it as are doors on both ends to ride straight though) containers and have four so far plus a 20' we placed for our tenants to store shit.

A 20 is plenty for a decent small shop with shelves hung from the ceiling as I do on mine.

Another way is use a box trailer (you can rent trucks if you need to move it and they're awesome for when you move to your next home). I use mine for electrical tools and equipment at the moment. I removed the wheels and store those inside. The trailer sits on old car and truck rims placed horizontally under the corners. I nested mine with one horizontal and the second vertical inside the first.

I use a Bulldog style hitch mount which besides beind adjustable is easy to remove and store or use with other trailers. (Since I only pull one at a time I only bought one hitch.) No hitch and no wheels reduces theft risk and the trailer is a nice boring white with no indication anything that matters lives inside.

Every motorcyclist should have a shop and the sooner the better since shops support any DIY you care to do. Anon's using a container or trailer feel free to ask for detailed info. Trailers or containers are easy to fit with power and LED lights.
>>
>>28749905
>This is gonna sound insulting but did you absolutely thread it in properly and all the way in and not crossthreaded? Check the spark plug wires itself if your bike is carbed then you might need to adjust the fuel.

Good point that's no insult since inexperienced Anons may not know to start their plugs by finger then spin them in by hand until they require a wrench. On buried plugs I shove a few inches of automotive fuel hose over the plug insulator to turn them in with.

Thanks for the tips, it's not a klr though it's a cbr thumper
I did take a quick look at the tubes but it was getting dark, I'll recheck them again tomorrow and also lift the tank to see the vaccuum line

Pic related is an old pic and the gap has gotten wider, I'd say half an inch of gap. It doesn't backfire very often, but with this plug it's a tiny bit more frequent.
>If the gap where your muffler is clamped to the downpipe is just a sloppy fit
The screws broke off and I couldn't drill them out, it kept on working and it made me louder to the point cagies actually hear me so I let it be

>>28749905
The radiator got bent about 8 months ago and it's been working well until changing the plug. In the ride I had with the new plug the temp rises but doesn't pass the middle. I've experienced coolant leaks on other bikes and they just keep going up. The issue is really the bottom end, could this be a bottom end bearing issue that's increasing friction?
It's been backfiring for a couple of years now, since the last muffler screw broke off. I just find it odd a new plug that makes it start up better without stuttering anymore also makes it backfire more

I have a problem that I think is cylinder pressure. After replacing just one gasket instead of the whole assembly, it starts making a sound like a balloon deflating and stops.
Can anyone confirm? I've tried adjusting the carburetor, but the result is the same. Now I have to order the gasket set and take the engine apart again t.t

Oh it is a KLR? My first gen (I assume second gens do this as well) doesn't have a thermostat or radiator bypass. Lots of people recommend to add one with one of the thermobob kits avaliable but I think it's a mostly a farkle.
Also the radiator is oversized for the engine so it will run cold if you are moving quick.
Upside of that is it pretty much won't overheat, still watch your gauge though. My fan has been broken for I don't know how long but it only starts to climb up the temp gauge after ten or so minutes sitting idle.

If you need to free a slotted jet, use a round screwdriver bit
with a "hollow ground" tip. Then take a Dremel and carefully grind the tip so it looks like )( viewed from the side.

The sharp edge grabs the bottom of the slot vs typical garbage screwdriver tips which wipe them. My mentor (RIP) was the only person I've known to use that trick he figured out in the 1950s.

The power jet blockoff is there because not every tune requires it. If you consider the jet hopelessly stuck then
you could try drilling it with a #60 thru #80 drill bit set (about ten bucks). My carb tool collection got that in the 1980s for de-leaning low speed jets. I turn them using a pin vise or small vise grip.

The small drill bit chucks sold for Dremels would be the ony power drill I'd use (and are worth owning_ but before making holes I'd get a new power jet then measure its orifice using the shanks (never measure with flutes) of the drill bit set.
>>
>>28750441
Shit happens. That's minor. The manual impact driver was invented before you were born for that sort of thing because it's the only impact which is simultaneously forced into the fastener while turning.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTQxzxNdKhU

Everyone fucks up their share of Torx. Also keep in mind Torx Plus exists and if you can download a service manual that may mention which is used. No shame in your learning. The knowledge is FAR more than worth the sacrifice. No one falls out of their mums cunt with a wrench in their hand.

>>28750487
Having jobs etc is no barrier nor is time. I surmounted both by choosing to. People are far too easily intimidated and often don't realize ALL wrenching is of a life-changing income effectiveness multiplier piece.

I'm now a cripple who only gets riding in between surgeries and still wrench effectively though slower than formerly. Key is I take my time and take notes and pics throughout. I've wrenched in dorms, singlewide trailers, rental houses etc without issue.

The way I learned to wrench began long before I owned a vehicle. I read constantly and still do. The time people waste unproductively can yield much more fun. Those who read are rarely surprised.

>>28750441
You can drill the head off then turn the shank if it strips. Take your time and accumulate a decent tool kit. Study make and model-specific fora, Fecesbook etc. Corded drills are dirt cheap and used is fine. Best to persist because once conquered the experience is for life.

You can use a cheap LP torch to burn out the carbon, though oxy-acetylene is quicker since a cutting torch can send extra oxygen downstream.

I garentee you will have actually 0 regrets if you bought a baba blade. I whole heartedly shill the 929/954 because I genuinely believe they're marvelous machines that are exceptional to live with day-to-day.

I'll mention that while the 954 has displacement and weight advantage over the 929, the 929 has more dogs in the transmission (1 more) and doesn't feel as "cheap" (I say this loosely)

954 is a min-max 929, which is good but just barely draws over the line of sacrificing some durability in the name of performance. If I had a choice between the two I would pick a 929 and then build out the engine to 954 specs for the best of both worlds. Although the 954 sharp angles looks really cool whereas the 929 has a more timeless Y2K bubble kind of styling.

I just can't get over how good the 954 looks whilst being just as powerful and lighter than the next gen 1000s. Would love to have a low mileage black/yellow in the garage. But all the ones for sale are high miles because they're obviously so fucking good to ride.

A maxi-scooter is a sports bike!
I can fit my puncture repair kit (including compressor), water bottle, fags & lighter, gloves, helmet, and whatever else I want in this huge trunk.

If you want a fast utilitarian motorbike then take the maxi-scooter pill.

Miles are no issue if the owner regularly changed the oil and did proper maintenance. These are built to last hundreds of thousands of miles. Whatever you do if you do get one do NOT let people on the fireblade forums gaslight you into thinking weird noises are normal. I'll save you some headache
>tapping sound = worn CCT, simply swap the original with the updated CCT
>buzzing/clicking sound from down low to the right = HTEV needs adjustment cuz screw backs out over time without loctite
>there are 2 important recalls for all 929/954. 1. A fuel line replacement recall due to expansion in extreme heat 2. Shift shaft / clutch basket assembly (only for 929 and early 954s) you can ID if the bike had it done if there's 2 punch marks on the right side of the frame near the frame bolt housing.

I did the clutch recall myself and the fuel line was already swapped so now my bike is sorted properly.

What's the maximum amount of miles that a motorbike engine can do if it was regularly maintained? How will I know when it's dead?
>>
>>28751057
Oh and these bikes do NOT have piston slap, retards just don't put in new shims EVER. It's bananas how many fireblade owners disregard their machines longevity by hand waving irregularities as normal.

Completely depends on the specfic bike in question. Not even blanket statements like "all Japanese bikes" suffice.

A 929/954 can easily hit 200k miles. I believe the oldest baba blade on record was 310k miles before the guy got T-boned by a dude who ran a red light. This is as per following the factory service manual maintenance intervals exactly as written.

I had a really close call on the bike yesterday. I think I'm a really safe rider and can generally predict people's actions, but I swear this guy was intentionally trying to hit me - or at least to scare me. I can't talk to my family about it, because they just say "You shouldn't ride that stupid bike", ignoring that the only other option would literally take an extra 3 hours of my life every single day.

>Riding down a bike lane, which I know I shouldn't do, but I think I was being pretty safe.
>Traffic was completely stationary, and would have been waiting for quite a while because of a road block ahead
>Literally right as I go past this car with a cigarette-smoking wog, he spontaneously decides to floor it and try to park on the side of the road
>No indicator, and I didn't even see his wheels turn beforehand
>The only reason he doesn't hit me is my cat-like reflexes dodging to the side, and even then he misses me by only a couple of inches
>I literally had to look down at my leg to see if he had hit me
>He says "It was just an accident, don't worry about it. You're fine, your bike is fine, move on."
>A Russian guy on another bike right behind me also just tells me to move on, and politely asks the guy to use indicators next time

But I have to wonder. Who the fuck sits stationary in traffic for a long time, and then spontaneously decides to park on the side of the road? His windows were open, so he would have heard us coming. I can't shake the feeling that he was intentionally trying to hit me. It was bad enough that I'm going to check dashcam videos on YouTube for the next couple of weeks, because I think it might show up.

What makes you think a scooter is a toy? They're more utilitarian than any motoGP replica. Most scooters are built for practicality, unlike any sports bike which are built for speed. To me a sports bike is a toy that should be used on the race track.

Sounds like cowardice copium to the T'

It's so small and tiny, that's like saying a smart car has more utility than a trucc because it can park in more places. You can't do nearly as much with the former as you can the later.

Again ladies, by all means enjoy your toys but the false snark superiority is comically backwards. I admit it is very funny to read this stuff

Yes, and yes. The bike has been relatively faultless until recently when I had to change the brake lever switches which I don't think are a consumable part so I'm hoping the bike isn't about to start falling apart now. I've never seen another scooter with so many miles on it before.

>>
>>28751133
Oh yeah dude you're doin great then, maybe one of these days go around the whole bike and re-torque all the fasteners (preferably with a torque wrench to spec) they can back out over time due to vibrations, you could go a step above and put orange loctite on every fastener too in order to prevent this.

In the far far future you might need new piston rings, shims, crank bearings, etc but your internals like the pistons, rods, crank, etc will be in fantastic shape due to your continued upkeep over the bikes life.

I do expect it when there's a line of sitting cars and an open lane.
But this went:
Parked cars -- narrow bike lane -- lane -- lane
The parked cars were in between those kerb cutout things, so it's not like he could have possibly thought he could save time by driving through it.

Picrel is roughly where it happened. You wouldn't expect someone to suddenly swerve into that parked lane, surely?
>>

I'll be honest, dual sports just don't do anything for me and I feel like I would haver zero motivation to ride one. I'm not looking at any serious dirt riding either. Just some general dirt roads as needed.

If I’m passing any vehicle moving slower than me I am covering my brake and obsessively watching their wheels
Maybe it’s because I do a lot of city riding but yes I’m expecting cars do just about anything in traffic that could endanger me
I’m not saying that guy is in the right or it was easy to expect but you’re moving in a spot where people aren’t expecting you to be, you should be ready for them to block your path

Learning to ride dirt will make you a much better overall rider, you don’t have to ride it forever, but it will make you a much better and more importantly much safer rider.
If you get used to riding in low traction environments you’re less likely to lose your shit if you lose traction for just a moment on the pavement.
Also just the general adage of learn on a cheap bike you don’t worry about dropping applies as well

The frame thing does look cool.
I got the SRAD 600, it was the fastest most modern bike I have ever ridden, the 0 to 100 feeling of the 600 feels like entering warp speed, it was off until 8k and then all the power rushed in out of the blue
Thinking about it now, 10 years later, even though I think it's one of the most beautiful machines ever made, I don't think I can ride one of these things again. They are just too big and heavy for me, slow in the roads I like to ride, my current rides feel so much better
I also didn't have money for the gas
