I'd like to get into an argument about IFS if anyone is interested
>>28756649Evening>>28647497
>>28756717Better on the road. Worse then SFA off road. Not much else to say.
>>28756649Jesus, I need to check my eyes. For a moment, I thought that was a Pacer turned into an off roader.
I put a 2" lift on my wifes forester so that I can through my dirt bike onto a hitch carrier. Kinda want to take her on an easy trail now, too. She would probably freak but that's part of the fun honestly
>>28756876Did you have to lower the subframe for a 2" lift?
Lift kit is installed. I'll have to wait until the weekend to take it out on trails, but I can tell already that it's going to be an improvement. The extra wheel gap looks cool too. It should have come from the factory like this. Basically everything that connects the car to the road, from the tires to the bushings, has been replaced with new parts, and it drives so nicely now. With the mechanical fixing/upgrading basically done, the fun stuff can start.Number stickers for my upcoming rally should also arrive this week. Sponsor stickers are already printed. Temu offroad lights also arrived. The mounting system is all fucked up, but I think I have a good plan. Now question is whether to wire them up myself or pay someone who knows what he's doing. Starlink terminal and battery also arrived last week, and, of course, aren't playing well together, but I will solve it. Various cables and clips and mounts and holders are on the way for me to wire up all the in-car gear. I still need to order the roof mount for the Starlink (I guess magnetic is the way to go?) and a cooler box (so that I can have frosty drinks on the road) but I feel like the build is really starting to come together now.
>>28756884Being European seems miserable lol
>>28756886I'm American.
>>28756881Just the rear. It's not too bad
>>28756897I had a 1981 Subaru Gl that I lifted, I think 2.5". This was over decade ago. Even after dropping the subframe it would constantly tear CV boots. It ruined the car and I regretted the lift.
I haven't hit the trails in almost a month now because of the weather which kinda sucks. I went out last money but I ended up cutting it pretty short because it was pouring rain and the temperature dropped to like 40. Some days I'm eauipped to deal, but not always
>>28756902I'll have to keep that in mind, then. Only reason I got it was because the stock suspension is only rated for a 150lbs tongue weight. I put a class III hit h on there and have a bike carrier, but between the bike and the carrier I'd be pushing 300 pounds on it. Honestly, it probably would have been fine, but I figured better safe than sorry and then I could take it into deeper camp sites with my wife
>>28756908How does the car sit when the bike is on? Is it pretty squatted?
>>28756900Yeah, I know you can't get them in the US, but, if you have a passport, you can travel to places where you can.Driving a subcompact offroad is a lot of fun. There are lots of benefits to the small size and light weight. The Swift I'm setting up now is AWD too, which I hope will be useful in some of the sandier places that were a challenge in my Twingo.
2012 chevy cruze is a capable offroadert. drove up a rugged mountain in one a long time ago
>>28756921I never tried it with the stock suspension. With the lift, it's not bad at all. Comes down a bit as you'd expect, maybe an inch? I'll have to pay closer attention next time I load it up to tell you the truth. According to the documentation, the lift kit should have increased it's capacity by about 440lbs over stock, and my bike is only 270lbs
>>28756929If you're doing it as a hobby, the best offroader is the one you have the most fun offroading in.
>>28756649now that its not 120° anymore the drunk mexicans in SXS are really in full force out in the desert. got new tires and am itching to take them out. gotta wait till i have some free time during the work week to go out there.
>>28757241I nearly got flattened by a dude in a sxs last year on my bike. He claim flying around a blind corner on a forestry road running along a mountain side. The hispanic menace must be stopped
>>28757247even when they arnt driving like idiots they are being pieces of shit blasting music and setting up too close to an obstacle to watch eachother go through it. one of these have to do a exhaust chop to get my spare to fit back in stock location, maybe this weekend
>>28756717Ill play!!
>>28756804>worse off road Only worse for flexing photographers who mount boulders for Instagram.
>>28757274You telling me my lifted prius is good for offroad?
>>28757274Actual crawlers are such a minute niche that nobody on /o/ owns one. There are people who post here with Lamborghinis and Vipers, rally and circle track. But there are so few crawlers in this world that they dont even have someone to represent them here. They might as well be NASCAR or Top Fuel dragsters. So basically they dont exist in the real world and can be ignored as a rounding error, thus making IFS superior in all applications.
4runner sold. Thinking of what to blow the money on. Jeep has way too new tires for me to replace them with AT's, but I have to do the pinion bearings so I was thinking of a locker. envoy might go to settle estate debts since I never registered it, if I can keep it I'll see about taking the 6.0 to a machine shop. There is swelling on the bottom of the frame, couldn't break it up but I think I'll measure up a H3 frame, I want the rear sump + 4wd
>>28757738>4runner soldWhat year and wuch ya get for er ?
>>287577461996, 3.4 auto 4wd, 154k. got 5000 for her after a month of sitting with a sign on it out front. i just put a set of used g056's on it and it rode ok but that was it, i disliked all of the driving dynamics, its loud as fuck and thirsty as a gmt800 tahoe. it desperately needed an exhaust and had some storm damage. i had a facebook listing but i just got asked stupid questions, do you have a carfax? etc.
>>28756922>Driving a subcompact offroad is a lot of fun. There are lots of benefits to the small size and light weight. And this is why the 1996 Geo Tracker reigns supreme.
>>28758050seX90 is superior
>>28758050>>28758059you rentboys aint making it up the mountain
>>28758067you could drive a tracker up the side of mount everest
>>28758067I owned a seX90 with only slightly bigger tires for a few years and it would regularly embarrass lifted 4x4 pickups
>>28758059I like the 4 seats and removable top of the sidekick/tracker bettertrunks are for dweebs
>>28758076>removable top X90 has a removable t top for beach cruising >trunk The coupe styling makes it a MILF magnet in addition to a capable off road vehicle
>>28758080Maybe, but I don't care about all that.I just have autism.
>>28756717I think they're both neat. I decided to keep the IFS on my truck because I like the road manners, the solid axle swap was a little expensive because they're not super common, and the solid axle I would have liked to go with was narrow making it look kinda silly.
>>28758095>I just have autismWhen people say this on /o/, does it mean they're actually like, diagnosibly autistic? Or are they just metaphorically autistic?
>>28758149Can't speak for anyone else, but for me it's 100% the former. I don't like making eye contact and I have an unhealthy obsession with 30 year old subcompact suvs.
>>28758068>trackerdo you mean tractor?sure. perhaps. But your 1.3 liter suzuki isn't a tractor.
>>28758149they just mean they're incels who can't talk to women. autism is heavily over diagnosed in the USA.
>>28758171took you an hour to come up with that?
>>28758180i was watching youtube videos on how to undo a bolt, so sorry I couldn't reply to your seethepost instantly
>>28758171>engine too small Retard Suzukis have great power to weight and also who the fuck cares when you have low range
>>28758192anon, you are the one seethingI just like the little suv
>>28758194saw a guy who turbo'd one so he could run his AC while going uphill
>>28758203I've never seen a Suzuki with AC in my life.
>>28758209It was definitely an option on Trackers, I can't imagine Sidekicks would be different.
>>28758213Ya but if your already so broke that your at the suzuki dealership can you really afford the AC option ? And for a vehicle with a removable roof?
I picked up a 1" body lift, and I figured I might as well put in some fresh body mount bushings while I'm in there. Will the new body mount bushings lift it even more? Does the body lift just go on top of the body mount bushings or in between? This is my first body-on-frame vehicle.
>>28758217That's probably part of why they're so uncommon.
>>28758555no/rtfm
>>28756649My neighbor is working on this. Pretty cool.
>>28758194these little things will pass 5k lbs trucks on the trail all day, and thats all that matters in /org/
>>28758555Typically stock bushings will be compressed slightly so youll get 1/8" more "lift", more depending on age.Frame>lift spacer>body mount bushing.
>>28758067Not him but I've had one of these for 20 years. 1998, last year of the first gens. It will make it up the mountain just fine. I've done vacations and field work in it from Pikes Peak to Pensacola. It has to do with the gearing. You're in 5th at like 30mph. That means you got plenty torque on the low end. It's one of the reasons they do good with bigger tires too. With 32's on mine and a bunch of mods to the suspension, you're still doing 3500rpm at 75mph. The power band in the thing is actually like 3000-4500rpm.Also got a 1996 we use as a farm jeep, but that bitch leaks from the crank so bad she's gotta have all her seals done before she catches on fire. Might as well do the timing and a bunch of other stuff. Gonna have to haul her down to my good mechanic next spring break.
>>28759766And here's the old girl that really needs a proper repaint.
>>28759775Nice.I personally think it's a little bit too much (and I have an FSB with a 6" lift on 35s)
>>28759782This is pretty much the edge. Any larger tires and you couldn't hit speedlimits on a flat highway in 5th. The lift was actually in progress here. The rear springs didn't completely sit correctly, so I had to take one coil off and add a small seating spacer. That puts it more like a 6 inch suspension lift all around with custom control arms front and back to make it possible. They're just tiny cars. Also was previous to trimming the bumper in back.I need the rake though for being able to carry about a thousand pounds of rocks and tools during geology field work.
>>28759797>geology field workbased
>>28758209>>28758213Just gonna say, on my two, the farm bitch has a seized compressor and the field bitch leaks just enough to need a can of 134A every two years or so.The thing is, they leak so much air from the soft tops at speed that it's pretty much useless. The hard tops are barely better. It's only the heat you want, and that fucking aluminum block takes forever to heat up in winter. Also, hoard radiators if you have a manual. Some computer glitch shows automatics as compatible and every manufacturer only stocks those despite being the rarer model, so you're fucked if you need one even if they're only like $70.
Herro. I have a 2nd gen tacoma i lifted and I have what I assume is needle bearing vibration now. Due to a couple other front diff annoyances, I'm considering buying a used diff and replacing the bearing with that fancy ecgs bushing and replacing it. Is there anything else I can do to upgrade before installing the new diff?
>>28759896Put a mini spool in it
>>28758944Thanks, anon.

>>28758050>1996>Posts a pre-1996 8-valveBut why?
Can someone explain to me how these shocks are able to travel? As the leaf springs compress and the shocks start their up-travel, wouldn't they bind up?
>>28760148Maybe this will help, https://www.theautopian.com/why-pickup-truck-shocks-are-mounted-weird/I don't have an answer though.
>>28760148Ill come back tomorrow to check on you after your seizure from trying to figure this out.
>>28760148would be fine for articulating like a crawler would. would be awful for verticle travel like you might see going fast in whoops.
>>28760752I could spend days trying to explain suspension geometry. The difference between 90° vertical and 45° is the rate at which the shock travels vs the spindle. The shock does not "bind".
>>28757266Ttb is the most based type of IFS. I still prefer a solid front axle for the farm work I do, but if I ever built anything for jumping you can bet your ass it will have a ttb front suspension (also I have a lot of old shitbox fords sitting around to steal parts off of.)
>>28758150>Can't speak for anyone else, but for me it's 100% the former. I don't like making eye contact and I have an unhealthy obsession with 30 year old subcompact suvsI might be autistic too... Is avoiding eye contact a real symptom? Like it I am actually talking one on one with someone I don't mind making eye contact with them. But say it I am sitting in my pickup in the parking lot while my wife buys groceries and people walk by (even if I know them) I avoid eye contact so maybe they won't interact with me. Come to think of it, is staying in the pickup while my wife grocery shops also a symptom?
>>28760804i never said it would bind. that was the original guy. i should have said it was not "optimal" for go fast stuff.
>>28760961Well youre incorrect.Again, I can spend days explaining geometry. Here's a Baja Unlimited Trophy Truck.There's are $250k+
>>28760967
>>28760971
>>28760169Very interesting link. Thank you>>28760570GUH>>28760752That makes sense as one side of the axle would be coming up as the other is coming down.>>28760804I made an ms paint edit of the pic I posted, and I see that it won't bind up. but these>>28760967>>28760971>>28760973are independent front, while the pic I posted is a solid rear axle. Before you call me retarded, I'm not trying to start a fight here. I'm just trying to imagine it in my mind's eye.
>>28760570>GUHjokes aside, that is easier to understand. maybe because I have a bike.
Here's the basics (imaginary numbers for explanation purposes). If a shock is at 90°, then wheel travel and shock compression are linear.1 in of travel = 1/2" of shock compression. This remains constant so 4" of travel = 2 inches of shock compression. If its at an angle, then as suspension is compressed the shock angle changes and creates a variable rate without having a valved shock. The first inch of travel might be 1/2" of shock compression but the second inch of travel might be 1/4" of compression. Conversely you can have the second inch of travel = 1" of compression (depending.on geometry).(If coilovers are used than you can get variable rate out of a standard spring).
>>28761048Imagine if one wheel went over a boulder. Only the spring on that side will compress. Think of how that motion will compress the shock. Now think about hitting a speed bump and both springs compress. Imagine how the shocks move for that.
>>28761068That's good stuff. Thank you>>28761070Okay, I think I'm understand. Thanks
>>28761102understanding*
>>28756717Solid axle is more robust, but I'd rather have long travel ifs with portals,if I had the money, better clearance.

My wife wants a mini SUV and I want it to be simple to work on and get good mpg. The plus is that she can drive stick. I think I have decided on the Chevy tracker with the 2.0. the Honda and Toyota are just too expensive to compete and the liberty is a pile of shit. >>28778324Toyota are (usually) a safe bet but you pay more for that level of reliability. Of a ute is an option then im guessing you live in upsidedownland and your market is going to be very different than what Euro or U.S. anons are accustomed to.
