Yes, the 5th gen GDI 1.8L Elantra motors die early & often, but what about the GDI 2.0L Elantra SPORT motors? Especially the ones made in Korea? What's up? I keep looking for a replacement car, but I keep coming back to this 2015 Elantra SPORT with all the extras (and a *new* motor installed 25,000 miles ago). WTF do I do?>inb4 there's already another hyundai thread

>>28765753>buying this car will trigger aut/o/ists on this boardWhy would buying a shitty car trigger anyone? The stuff we don't like is when people buy shitty cars or the worst model of a car available then claim it's the best. That's just pants on head retardation with 0 basis in reality.
>>28759964Alright, enough of this Autist, I'm here to help you out because I somehow learned a lot about this platform ever since owning a 2016 Kia Forte LX for over 7 years. Great little shitbox.Let's start with the elephant in the room, the GDI engine. You don't want it, you have to clean the carbon buildup on the intake with walnut blasting every 50k miles, or else they blow, but NO ONE ever does that. The engine blows, Hyundai/Kia has that 100k mile/10 year warranty, so they just replace it with the 1.8L engine. If the 1.8L is in there (which it more than likely is) then you have the reliable engine, if you see "GDi" on the engine cover, just walk away. Just be careful because the 1.8L and 2.0L look very similar, I'd look under the plastic engine cover. The transmission is decent, it's an actual 6-speed Mitsubishi tranny which is pretty reliable, but you WILL have to change the ATF. Use Valvoline MaxLife ATF every 60k miles, it's the best, way better than Hyundai/Kia SP-IV. As long as you change it, you won't run into the stuck tranny issue (that happened to me once on the highway when I dumped out all the ATF by accident and didn't realize it lol). Now common issues, in 2014, there were huge batches of bad ignition coils throughout the factories in Korea, so if your engine starts to randomly start shaking because of misfires, just replace all of them, and it'll be fine. The brake calipers are crap and will die around 100k miles. You may be able to clean off the rust and guide pins to get more life out of them, but you can get brand new ones for around $60, which is what I did since it's so cheap. It's a good beater with a heater if it has the 1.8L, I've driven mine from 30k to 130k miles. NEVER get a GDI engine, just fucking don't.
>>28765753>car is fucking sexy lookingthis is one of the most cars to ever car
>>28765908That's part of the charm.>>28765904Wow, thank you for the effort post! Just about everything you said jives with my research; however: are you serious about them swapping the blown 2.0L with a 1.8L instead of another 2.0L?! Why would they do this, when both are available? The engine was replaced about 35,000 miles after the Hyundai 100,000 mile factory warranty expired, so I don't know if they or someone else replaced it. (I'll post the carfax later). It just seems kinda crazy that they wouldn't use the 2.0L like the 2014-16 Sport is supposed to have.(It certainly performs & feels like it's the 2.0 and not the 1.8, but I'll check just to be sure.)>{Your 2016 Kia Forte LX came from the factory with a 1.8L MPI (not GDI, and not 2.0L) engine, so I'm assuming your 1.8L & 2.0L GDI experience comes from (an)other vehicle(s)...?}Walnut blasting does seem to be the move, and I don't mind doing it at 50-60,000 miles (which is about 30,000 miles from now, or 10 oil changes), along with changing the ATF fluid then.Coils, brake calipers, ball joints & struts have all been replaced, and I think even the fuel pump plus other things. The car seems quite up to snuff and fully refreshed.>NEVER get a GDI engine, just fucking don't.Forewarned is forearmed, but I think I'm gonna roll the dice on this one. I just haven't found such a recently-built car in this nice condition with such a low-mileage powerplant and so many new components anywhere around here lately. A thirty-year-old Toyota or Honda for half the price isn't as nice, and will likely need a few thousand more dollars of repairs to replace aged out components within the near, and I just need something reliable that won't need anything major done for the next couple of years. And I want it to be nice.Thank you for your helpful & informative effortpost.
Can you get insurance to register it? some insurance providers are refusing to provide liability coverage for the Hyundais and Kias with physical keys because of the Kia Boyz
>>28766040Bro, I would speak to the service techs at Kia dealerships when going in to buy my oil filters from the parts counter, and they'd tell me that they'd just replace the 2.0L or 1.6L turbo with the 1.8L because they were completely exhausted replacing engines so many times, Kia America just gave up and told them to throw in 1.8L engines since it was the only reliable Nu engine they had. When I went in for the Kia Boy security recall, they were surprised to see my base trim Forte, and the tech unprompted said that they never see the base trim because it's one of the only reliable Kia's they had. I know they made a 2.0L Nu engine without GDI that they used in the Kia Soul, but I think the Elantra Sport only came with the GDI engine. If they replaced it outside of the warranty, they probably just slapped a used GDI engine in there (since they're dirt cheap for obvious reasons lmao), and threw it into auction. They're fatally flawed engines, even with walnut blasting, you're on borrowed time, all the techs couldn't stand seeing the 100th Kia Soul roll in with another blown engine.A refreshed car with new rubber parts replaced all around is nice, but I'd take a clapped car with an engine that can easily go up to 300k miles over a fatally designed car. You do NOT want to do an engine swap. You can easily replace coils, brakes, ball joints, struts, and fuel pump all by yourself for cheap in a driveway while still being able to drive throughout, but you CANNOT do that with an engine. I'm just like you, I did a lot of research, and bought a used Kia Forte from a car rental company for $8k. It's a nice little shitbox, everything else I test drove was garbage in-comparison, but unfortunately the 1.8L and 2.0L are worlds apart in reliability. And trust me when I tell you, you *think* you're going to own this car for only a year, but I can guarantee you that you're going to drive your next car for 5+ years, it happens every time.
BTW, price is $5,999, PLUS FEES, but NO WARRANTY. Brand new plastic cover emblazoned with the "GDI" logo. It certainly feels to have plenty of power, having no trouble accelerating quickly up hills, which I hear the 1.8 isn't so hot at. How do I tell if it really is a 2.0 or not before buying it, anyway? The salesman/mechanic/buyer at this one-man used car dealership's probably not going to let me take the plastic engine cover to look underneath. There are plenty of posts on Reddit & elsewhere by people complaining about these Korean GDI engines dying, but there are also a decent number of folks posting that their 2.0 Nu GDI engines (like in the 2014-16 Elantra Sport) are still running like a top at 200,000+ miles (with frequent oil changes, of course). Naturally, very few people ever post about their daily drivers unless there's either a problem or they're running great after 300,000 miles.>almost nobody bothers to post about their unremarkable grocery-getters that 'everything is running normally'

IDK, I keep going back & forth on this. My further inspections & studies on this matter justify my desire to buy this 2015 Hyundai Elantra Sport in near-mint condition with the full bells & whistle Technology Package and a brand new 2.0L Nu GDI motor (confirmed) for the low cost of six thousand dollars (in today's insane market).I intend to make it pay for itself through livery & delivery work. The CX-5 seems awefully nice, but 150% the price of this car.Older cars costing half the price just don't seem to be in the kind of proper order I want, and don't really "do it for me..." that said, I like the idea of driving something without scads of electronics and that *cannot* be remotely controlled by someone else.*Sigh* -- I'll pull the trigger on SOMETHING tomorrow.

>>28768409hoondai is nicer
>>28767875lol I'd love to, but clapped out civics from older years with higher mileage and multiple accidents have higher prices than this.>>28760030>>28767932>>28767932It turns out that was due to poor preventive maintenance. You pretty much have to use Hyundai oil filters and the right kind of oil; otherwise: you starve the engine of lubrication, especially the timing chain, et cetera. Using the right oil & oil filter prevents this, especially with regular oil changes (every 3,000 miles ideally). Also using cheap gas almost guarantees this at some point, so use top-tier fuel only (Shell 97, for example). This is all according to my extensive research over the last week or so ever since finding this car.>>28768406>>28768410>>28768412Hoondai has 159,000 miles on the body; 25,000 miles on the engine. >>28766141>I know they made a 2.0L Nu engine without GDI that they used in the Kia SoulDon't all of the new Fortes and K4s have a 2.0L MPI Nu engine? I know my 2021 Forte has a 2.0L MPI engine, and the 2019 Forte does, and the 2025 K4 does. Did they just give up on GDI as a tech after all the issues of the 2010s? Do you think these newer MPI engines would be as reliable as the 2010s era 1.8L MPI engine you're referring to?
>>28768540the best new engines have port and direct injection to mitigate carbon build up issuesmy sportaj is direct injectit means you have a higher compression ratioand really I think it just means you get more hp at higher revs, so it's not gonna be a huge difference, but I think Kia in general was a fairly early switcher over to direct inject engines ~ 2010 or so
>>28768546>>28768546I don't know where you're getting that from, it's all listed on the Kia site specifications as being MPI engines, not direct injection. Is this full of shit? Or is it not describing the whole situation?

>>28767526The GDI and Skyactiv are worlds apart because of how Mazda does its ignition stroke, it's a much cleaner burn (looks like all that magic Dorito work paid off). It can still have intake issues, but it's not fatally flawed. There's a reason why you barely hear much about one engine class, and there's worldwide recalls for millions of engines for the other. >>28768418Bro, your research is a bunch of idiots on forums guessing that specific oil & filters will starve off weak piston rings, or higher octane gas is going to stop carbon buildup when it'll just pull timing to accommodate the higher octane. You're going to burn oil, and then you're going to have piston slap, they're shit engines. I fucking called it when I said that they just grabbed a cheap junkyard 2.0L GDI engine, threw it in, and dumped it at auction lmao.If you do buy this auction abortion, just use Walmart oil, Walmart filters, and regular gas, none of it makes any difference with its inherent flaws. That's what I use on all my cars, from the 1.8L Nu to a supercharged 6.2L LSA (with the exception being premium gas, of course). The biggest difference will be frequent and diligent oil changes every 3k - 5k miles, that's all that matters. Maybe a catch can, but if you're so poor you have to stretch for a fucking auction Hyundai that already blew, save the money for more oil changes. Also who the fuck told you that PA doesn't salt their roads? Where the fuck are you getting ANY of your research? PA is right in the middle of the salt belt, you fucking dolt.>>28768409Finally some good fucking food, that 3800 Series II is legendary, easily 300k+ miles, amazing cars. It is still a GM though, and having owned a 2003 Buick Century myself, I lost mine to rust. If it's clean underneath, buy it. It doesn't have the Toyota tax, but is just as reliable (note: it's a GM, so you will still have random non-essential, annoying GM things break like radio buttons or knobs).
>>28759964Alright, it's time to give you real advice. If you're really so poor and stupid enough to waste time and money on Uber to barely make minimum wage (seriously, it's better to just get 2 McJobs instead, Uber/Lyft are all terrible now), there's really only one car that can handle it.You're not going to like the answer, but the best car to buy is a Toyota Prius. It's the world's taxi. Everywhere throughout the world, North America, South America, Europe, Asia, you will see a Prius diligently driving non-stop as a taxi or food delivery. Those understressed 4 cycles are unkillable, I'm sure of it. I've seen people not touch their oil for 50k miles and they still refuse to die. They're perfect city/Uber cars for stop-and-go traffic because of how the Atkinson cycle works, easily 300k+ mile cars with maintenance, hell they're still 250k+ mile cars WITHOUT maintenance. The only thing that goes wrong is the battery after decades, but that can be replaced by yourself for $1k, meaning buying a cheap Prius with a bad battery is a great deal.If you really don't want to get a Prius, then I recommend the 6th gen Camry just because I believe that they're one of the greatest cars ever made, they just won't die. All of its engines are great, especially the 2GR-FE. There's always the equivalent Lexus ES 350 as well.I also like Honda, so anything with a K-series is great, that's Acura RSX, TSX, and Honda Accord, Civic Si.Then there are the grandpa cars I brought up earlier: Ford Panther Body (Town Car, Crown Vic, Grand Marquis), Buick Park Avenue, LeSabre, Lucerne with the 3800 Series II or IIIWay better to gamble on a high mileage well-made car, then gamble on a cheaper low mileage car with inherent flaws. Spending $6k on a 160k mile Hyundai with a replaced engine is so fucking dumb, my 2016 Kia Forte LX with 120k miles is like $4k. Use AutoTempest, open up FB Marketplace, find a Boomer selling his Lexus or Buick and call it a day.Now leave us alone.
>>28768596No -- I'll drive Uber to earn the $6k I'm paying to buy it, making the car essentially pay for itself over the next several months.>>28768679>>28768702Thank you for more quality effortposting. However, I will not leave this thread alone until after I've finally bought this 2015 Hyundai Elantra Sport (or another car), which will most likely happen before Christmas.BTW, for your reading entertainment, here's an easy technique for servicing the engine.>tfw italian tuneuphttps://www.hyundai-forums.com/threads/2015-elantra-issues.718355/
