It is Friday! What are we wrenching on this weekend? We know you'd never be seen dead at a Jiffy Lube. Post your large projects, small repairs, tools, maintenance routines, tips, tricks, and general tomfoolery.
I think this dent is too large for this tool
>>28761925>tfw you get a 9-5 job wrenching and don’t feel like playing with power tools on the weekend as muchI need to swap a couple doorknobs at a friend’s apartment. He also wants me to fix his car, he love tapped a Jeep Wrangler and the spare tire on the Jeep smashed in his hood and I guess there’s smoke coming from the front of the car so probably radiator. But the fun part is he’s 76 years old and doesn’t drive well so I don’t want to fix it for the safety of everybody else on the road.
>>28761933>I need to swap a couple doorknobsThis summer i swapped this "commercial duty" doorknob onto my garage door. It's a different mechanical design than a regular door knob. Feels so good in the hand.
>>28761925Almost finished moving in but not quite. Getting the dolly ready for storage>Quick power wash >Oil coating inside the tubes >Greasing pivot bolt Tempted to fix the wiring before storing it but I probably won't. Ninja 650r>Fuel cap seized on>Pulling tank and seeing if I can release it from the fuel pump holeMight pound a screwdriver into the keyhole and force it open that way. 600f3>Locating parts from storage >Posting onlineTrying to find a nice workbench for sale nearby but nothing yet. I have to make a couple trips to the storage unit this week to grab my quickjacks, tool boxes, and other odds and ends. Going to hang the projector screen and sound bar tomorrow. About all I have planned for in the house.
>>28761929those things are shit even for small dents anyway
>>28761925boomers put a cheap shitty timing belt on it. full rebuild cause it snapped.
big oops.
>>28761947I mean they had old floppy ones from like the 90s with the polished gold color that hasn’t been popular for a decade or two. The $13 Hyper Tough knobs were a huge improvement.I also witnessed a 12V lead acid battery explode its top and sound like an M80 the other day. My boss sometimes rushes things without thinking it through, decided to weld a seat bracket on a golf cart directly above the golf cart batteries. And I’m still not sure if it was from welding with the batteries connected or the hot slag and shit falling onto the battery, but it was funny.
I live in NYC with speed cameras everywhere that fire at exactly 10mph over the limit of 25 mph. Mostly because it would be fun, I would love to have a pit limiter function to limit to 34mph, ideally by RPM.Is there a way to do this short of completely replacing the stock ECU with e.g. a Haltech?Yes I know this isnt sqtddtot but anyone who knows would be here.
>>28763341Just fold the corner of your license plate like everyone else
Bye bye
I unseized a seized brake caliper.
I have this 2012 Peugeot 508 and it's making clunk sound when I go into 4th and 6th gear only, it doesn't happen every time when I go into 4th but pretty much always happens in 6th gear.I bought the car like this so don't know how long its been there. its at 150k miles and has had the clutch and flywheel replaced around 600 miles ago. Any ideas what it could be?https://files.catbox.moe/6pkupk.mp4
Got a car with some generic android head unit in it, been trying to get this heap of junk to work since I got the car and no luck. The wifi and bluetooth doesn't work. When I try to enable the wifi the thing will shit itself and crash, there's no option for me to enable the bluetooth at all, I try to set the device name and pin and it crashes every time I do that. went into the factory config and enabled/disabled Bluetooth and nothing. I tried factory resetting, updating the firmware twice with newer versions each time and same shit happens.Never had a car with an android head unit before but I'm going to assume this just straight up doesn't work. This thing only has 2GB of ram and takes forever to launch anything. Is it worth spending money on a proper unit? I'd only really use it for music and maybe maps, idk if these units will work with any map app out there since I dont use google maps. Can't even get the damn aux port to work in the car so I'm just driving around listening to the engine noise for several hours
>>28767571They can be fun. Just replace it with a cheap name brand double din.
>>28767732Are they all standard sizes, as in for screw placement as well? The car I have has like a custom mount for the current android unit, I'll assume it's double DIN because it's basically like a tablet
>>28765491evil
>>28763097>boomersJapanese designed interface engine.
>>28768987Yes>>28768994I did this one too
bullshitting my steering tube back together.couldn't find a fuckin right size bearing so i got a sleeve, koyo needle bearing and shimmed it tight with a cam bearing.
I noticed yesterday that my passenger-side low beam is out. This is my first car and I'm comfortable doing repairs, but I've never replaced lights or bulbs before. The high beams work but the low beam is out. Do I just need to replace the bulb?Would it be better to just go ahead and replace both bulbs with LED bulbs or should I stick to incandescents? My car is a 1998 Subaru Sambar KV3, and original bulbs go for about 20 bucks.
>>28761925I bought one of these original BMW dual USB-C chargers to put in my E36 (fits perfectly into the center console): https://www.ebay.de/itm/167284665431 (OEN 84108711938)My question now is: What is the pinout? The seller told me they do not know the pinout and could not tell me even if they knew due to some BMW NDA / embargo.I found boomer-forums galore where they say>1 = 12v+>2 = GND>3 = Light / Illumination>4 = unusedbut that's for the SINGLE USB-C connector variant only (https://www.ebay.de/itm/167284665854 OEN: 84108711940), mine came with an obvious 4 stranded connector (pic rel)
>>28771337Is this a shitpost?
>>28771701This is all I could find in ISTA, at least for the chassis codes listed in the eBay ad you shared. Can't find anything referencing a twin USB socket, though I doubt the pinout would change as the modules are interchangeable.
>>28771804>ISTAThank you so much for effortposting, anon.I'm trying to make sense of the diagram, but it looks like 1 is 12v+, 3 is GND and 2 seems to be illumination?>Can't find anything referencing a twin USB socketPic rel, it just has two USB ports instead of one.>though I doubt the pinout would change as the modules are interchangeable.Seems you're right, since posting my original question I've found forum posts online where people exchange a single port module with a dual port module by simply replacing the thing and reusing the old harness.
>>28771824>Thank you so much for effortposting, anon.No worries, bro, wiring diagrams are an absolute bastard to find, so happy to help.>I'm trying to make sense of the diagram, but it looks like 1 is 12v+, 3 is GND and 2 seems to be illumination?4 is ground, 2 is I think 12v, and 1 + 3 are data. All this modern stuff is CANBUS, so it likely doesn't have any dedicated lighting pins.>Pic rel, it just has two USB ports instead of one.I mean in ISTA. I can only references to a single USB socket, or USB/AUX jack combo. Very odd, but meh.
>>28771706noi've done work on the engine and some minor electrics work here and there but i just don't know much about the lights. from the research i've done it should be as simple as>go to hardware store>buy bulbs>replace bulbsbut surely my 1998 car isn't going to take off-the shelf bulbs in 2025? i can find some bulbs with the same part number on used car parts websites, but i'm curious if i should be buying old stock (or possibly a used bulb?) from the parts sites, or if I can just get something modern. When I search up my make/model its not like I get any results saying "yeah this new part is compatible with your car"so i was hoping to get some advice on how to proceed
>>28772293The bulb will be coded, and are still plentiful. User manuals usually list all bulb types. Otherwise the code can be found on the bulb or it's base. That code is a spec. Matching codes will be a specced base, voltage, and type.
>>28771843>No worries, bro, wiring diagrams are an absolute bastard to find, so happy to help.Good Morning and Thanks again man, I appreciate it!>4 is ground, 2 is I think 12v, and 1 + 3 are data. All this modern stuff is CANBUS, so it likely doesn't have any dedicated lighting pins.So it will work, but it won't light up? Just watched this video where these guys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiG4WKXJ6WY made it work with three pins. But they're once again going for the boomer wiring.I wish I still had my lab PSU so I could just test this shit.>I can only references to a single USB socket, or USB/AUX jack comboI also have one of those laying around, backside is MQS but also HSD.
>>28772293Post car with bread on hood
>>28772406Just took this
>>28772414That's not a 1997 Subaru Sabar, now is it?
>>28772406i don't have any bread how about a mcdonalds napkin
>>28772509HOLY SHIT HAHAHAHAI really thought you were shitposting, but you actually bought one. You win this thread, real GOAT.Just buy the old school halogen bulbs Anon, if you buy LEDs its either going to be OSRAM or Phillips but those aren't certified for the Subaru Sambar, I've checked for both H4 and H7.Sure you don't really need "certifications" in the US (I assume you're from there but the RHD and sandals make me suspect you're not), you could also go with ChinkLEDs because that would come out to about the same: you'll blind everyone near it (including yourself) and make them hate your guts and gears.Go for whatever your car came with. Here's the compat lists for the Philips and Osrams, but they're in German:https://www.documents.philips.com/assets/20240710/de2c8be5ed3d429d9942b1a9009f9550.pdfhttps://look.ams-osram.com/m/53d49e38cbd618f2/original/Night-Breaker-LED-Compatibility-List-Cars-Campers-Special-Vehicles-DE.pdf
>>28772564sounds good thanks!picked these up for about 8 USD at the store and i'll put em in tomorrow when i have some sunlightguy at the store also guessed H4 but then looked it up for me to be sure
>>28772333>>28772564worked great. what a stupidly easy repair... thanks guys
>>28772405Huh. Well, if it works for him, it'll probably work for you. I don't actually know how this module works on the inside, I'm just making assumptions based off the 4 pins shown on the wiring diagram. I'd just copy him in this case.
>>28761925how to I begin 2 wrench? I am sick of bullshit new cars and stupid fucking features and $50,000 eachcurrent DD is a 2007 rav 4 i bought this summer and it's giving me nothing but shit and anything that needs fixing is a hassle that i gotta take it to a mechanic for thinking i could be a cooler dood if i had a simpler car with carburetors instead of EFI I get that it will need more work than a newer car. but also that the work is a lot simpler and probably easier to do and learn. is that crazy? like if i get a classic 70s muscle car as a DD.
>>28773153Just buy a piece of shit car off craigslist, but the mechanic tool set from harbor freight, along with a jack and 2 jack stands. This will all cost less than $2k. The rest will happen naturally.
>>28772602lol would this be the zoomer/millenial version of the boomer thumb?
>>28761925wet
>>28773153go buy a third gen camaro, they've all been owned by dipshits who fuck up basic repairs and modifications, they're cheap as shit to buy and work on, easy as shit to work on, and if you somehow fuck it up you're no worse than an average third gen owner
flushed my heater core today lads, hopefully that got the rest of the dexcool sludge out of it and I'll have heat again.the hoses were welded onto the nipples with corrosion and shit so I had to cut them off. I sure hope they're not $80 each for no reason like the last time I cut a hose to get it off.I'd post a picture but fucking 4chan banned my IP range for abuse.
>>28773153what this anon is saying below>>28773425i did the same thing to get startedi think the most important thing is to make sure you get a car you absolutely lovei recommend taking a car-enthusiast/mechanic buddy with you when you go shopping and he can help you pick something that isn't a total lemon (unless thats what you want)from there, just stay on top of maintenance and buy tools and parts as needed and ask your friends or watch youtube videos and just fix thingsEFI relies on a little computer (that you can replace... maybe fix??) so at the end of the day i think a carbureted engine is going to be more easily fixed/worked on but that's a question for other anonsas always the "best" cars to work on are ones with big communities and lots of available spare parts, so something like a civic or a miata is going to be a lot easier than something like a BMW or an alfa romeohalf the repairs on my car were done watching a friendly guy on youtube do them on essentially an exact copy of my own carwhatever car you get post of pic
bump
>>28773153if you don't mind pickups, < 2008 2wd gas pickups are everywhere, cheap, useful and in the entire spectrum of repair/disrepair. There's cheap aftermarket stuff to replace everything (unless it's a dodge), guides/videos/books for every component of the vehicle. If you don't daily drive it, hey, you've got a nice pickup to loan out or do weekend hauling with. If you can't fix an old truck, you weren't going to learn to wrench.
My lockout tune didn't have the right strategy code so now I gotta wait for the place to update it. Ah well. Half tempted to find another motor and just rebuild it but I'm a cheap bastard.
i have been filtered as a wrenchlet by sbc intake gaskets. they were initially leaking coolant, i cleaned it all up and torqued the lower to spec with new rubber border style gaskets, and i now have a major vacuum leak on both sides. ill see if i can fix it by putting rtv on the gasket but for now im just going to blame the vortec not having center bolts
Had one day this week yesterday so I knocked out these overpriced DRL bezels and DD elite fogs. Kinda done with the bolt-ons for this platform, if I want to take this car further it would be engine out for head studs at a minimum. Time to get back to EJ stuff in the summer.
>>28780521One day off*
managed to fix the threads on my exhaust after the oxygen sensor got completely shredded. it lined up with the non-fucked threads at the bottom too, thank God.
>>28780754here's the absolutely shredded oxygen sensor, no fucking clue how it got fucked up this bad. definitely using anti-seize on the new one.
>>28780048fellow vortec chad detected. I did my lower intake gaskets around this time last year.I hope you let the rtv set before torquing everything down!
