I’ve only been trucking for 8 months and just got onto this dedicated account, so the shit pay I’m getting should be expected. OTR was 42 cpm and this account is 65 cpm. Currently averaging $1400/week compared to $900, before.

Can anyone explain why trucks seem to insist on moving left immediately upon entering the expressway, even when they aren't up to minimum expressway speeds, the lane doesn't end, and there's traffic doing 70 MPH coming up from behind?
>>
>>28763390
Two reasons 1) that's how do they do it in their home country 2) They're bigger than you
>>
What’s the fucking point in truck stops having air hoses by the fuel pumps if they don’t release enough air pressure to inflate semi tires? Also, glad hand air hoses are a scam, since they do not come with a tire valve that locks onto the valve stem, and you need to be in the truck with your foot on the throttle to make sure enough air gets through.
>>
Hey guys
I’m doing fine
About as fine as I could do in an industry now overflowing with fraudulent drivers.

Honestly I’m fine and I’m doing well.
I’m really good.
>>
>>28763624
I don't think he do so good.
>>
>>28762647
Back when I was doing otr I stayed out 6 months once just to do it. Other than that I tended to stay out 3 months because the loads home and back out sucked and it took another two weeks to get back in the "pattern" of good loads with good timing where you just about knew what you'd be doing next before being told.

>>28763390
Some guys just live that way. If it were me doing that it would mean that I knew the road ahead had lots of on- and off-ramps plus seeing that I had an open spot to take the middle lane and reduce my exposure to idjits getting on and off. Also sitting higher with the big plane mirrors means I can see there's heavy traffic behind the lead cars so I better get over now or I won't be able to shortly.

>>28763536
Something wrong with setting the idle up with the cruise? Yeah, the supplied chuck sucks but having the capacity to air up a tire when you need to is invaluable. You could build a better air line but using points to get one has it's own appeal.

>>
>>28762647
My take home on a 2500 mile week is about 750$ right now but I'm still in my first six months. By the end of my first year it should be about 1k a week take home on a week like that. It's admittedly shit pay, but I was a neet that was about to be homeless and had a kid on the way when I started this job so I can tolerate it. Making the sleeper bunk comfy took a while and there's still more I'd like to do with it but it feels more like home than when I was living with my folks.

I sincerely doubt there's anyone out here taking home 2k+ a week doing dryvan no touch majority drop and hook otr. Maybe reefer, but from the reefer guys I've talked to that job can suck fucking ass if you're not getting paid right for detention time or the company you work for has dogshit trailers. I'd be thrilled to be taking home 1500 a week after taxes and insurance without having to sign a dogshit lease agreement for a mega to do it. My grandpa told me if I ever lease a truck he'll write me out of his will and after doing some research on it and finding out 90% of guys end up breaking their lease I get why. I generally do 4-5 weeks out because 4-5 days is about the maximum home time my company likes to give and if you pair that with a 34 it's about a week off. I don't like being out of the seat longer than that because I get rusty.
>>28764192
Dudes need to be warned what they'll turn into in just a couple years if they aren't disciplined about what they eat and making sure they're still physically active. In particular for this career. That 'ol boy is damn near heavy enough to pop the latches holding his steps onto the truck and whoever is giving him a medical card is a charlatan that's going to get people killed when he dies behind the wheel.

Yes. Trucking is in the middle of a big shakeout of drivers and carriers after a few years of decent freight where some jumped in and other overextended themselves. I wouldn't expect the bottom for another year at least. Then there's the whole underpaid immigrant factor too so I can't see driver wages recovering any time soon.

Any time anyone, not just trucking, advertises pay, the number comes from some bean counter tallying up the theoretical maximum the senior-most worker could make doing the most profitable labor the company offers for the most hours legally/physically possible in a week. In other words, it's bullshit; you're not gonna start out making the highest $/mi, the highest paying load isn't going to be assigned to you every week (let alone constantly for the whole week), and you're not gonna work 168 hours a week for very long before you burn out.
>>
>>28767308
Also it's the pre-tax number without you being on their health insurance, retirement, and before any deductions of which there are many in trucking. Theoretically I'm making "up to" 2400$ a week at my current company - once I've hit a year's experience and I'm on a dedicated account for walmart getting 640 miles a day five days a week and I'm hitting all the bonus metrics that are intentionally impossible to hit to make the most money possible, before taxes, and assuming I'm not on their health insurance and I'm not in their retirement program and I'm no longer paying them back for my cdl.

Realistically I'm making 900$ a week on a really good but not great or impossible week after taxes and health insurance once I've hit the one year mark and am no longer paying for school. So like 42k take home, 63k gross. And that's not factoring in the 7k I'll take in cash advances in that time frame to pay for food which means I'm actually making 35k a year assuming every week is that really good week and I get 115k miles in a year, which won't happen, so it's really more like 29,750$ for a 100k mile year running OTR after taxes and health insurance. And this is why every trucker that isn't fresh off the boat from a shithole wants every one that is to be rounded up and deported into the sun from a cannon because it should quite frankly be twice that number for take-home pay even for dipshit noobs.

(((They've))) been saying this for 20 years mate, im not gonna be a "heh id like to see a robot do my job" kinda retard because one day a machine will be better than me at driving but I doubt its ever gonna happen in my lifetime. The cost of remaking infrastructure to make automation feasible would be astronomical, its the reason you still have a mailman instead of an automated van, tell me how reliable those automated food delivery rovers are and then imagine it weighing 40 tons its just not gonna happen at this tech and societal level, people (niggers) WILL fuck with it. Mile long freight trains may as well be automated for how little the conductor actually knows about whats going on 100 cars down and theyre robbed damn near every day, that trend would be a huge issue for automated trucks because 2 cars could box it in and it wouldn't be able to run them through like a man defending himself could. So long as ships trains and small time deliveries like mail and amazon aren't automated I will never have any fear for my career being automated
>>
>>28767595
I'm still in my first year and I've seen at least half a dozen wrecks where fatalities were likely or confirmed and I've seen several dead bodies.
>>
Even Microsoft thinks trucking is one of the least likely jobs to be replaced by AI and the self driving trucks that are on the road in the US only operate in clear weather conditions, can't do first and last mile portions of the trip, can't dock, can't drop the trailer because they can't drop the landing gear, and even though they're at the point that on the highway they don't have to have a driver in the seat they still have to have a driver in the truck to take over for last mile and do the first mile to get it on the highway as well as fuel and pre, during, and post trip inspect it in accordance with the law. That driver also has to know how to troubleshoot the system to some degree if/when it fucks up. There will come a time when computers and AI are good enough to do trucking and the infrastructure is built out for them to do it, that time is most likely going to be towards the end of my career, I give zero fucks about AI trucks.
>>
>>28768331

I tried to look for signs of heavy vehicles being forbidden but there were none and the next turn was like 30 minutes away and I had to stop in 50 minutes max so I tried my luck and it led to a very tight turn and I caught some wooden post/beam that was sticking out of the building and it made a hole in the upper part of my trailer. Police classified it as minor negligence because there was no sign warning me so it's left to insurance.

As the year is drawing to a close, it looks like my income as a truck driver will be about $35k.
It’s my first year, I started solo driving last Spring, and I had just recently gotten onto a dedicated account that increased my income.
>>
>>28770409
If I continue on this account throughout 2026, my annual income will be at least $72k.

>USPS contractors
Well, 10 Roads is the largest of them and they're giving up in February and shutting down. Some years ago a fellow driver went to Solo, which is another mail contractor, and he said they'd run the hell out of him but he was making bank. I've noticed here recently Solo seems to always be going 5-10 under on the freeway. It's as annoying as Prime and TMC used to be.

You're going to need at least one year of recent work experience to get a job with even the shittier megas. The only exception would be welfare express but that's actually hell and I wouldn't recommend it. Most want you to have at least three years of recent work experience, swift turned me down because I took a year off to be a stay at home dad because my wife was going insane staying home with our kiddo.

Help me truckfrens. I did something fucking stupid this morning
>on way to 5am delivery running 15 minutes behind, 30 minute grace before fat late fee
>disabled daycab blocking center turn lane, left lane and half of right lane
>sleep deprived and retarded, afraid of trying to swing around into oncoming lanes
>decide to drive up on curb/median and squeeze past in right lane
>fucking speed limit sign i couldnt see as I started blocking median, try to squeeze between him and it
>end up tighter to his trailer than wanted
>clear him with maybe 1-2 inches of space to spare between our trailers
>make delivery no problem
>later today at new pick up in fresh daylight, realize there's a gouge in the metal at the very top of the trailer + damaged sliver of aero plastic
>starts at trailer axle and goes to rear of trailer
>realize when axles hit curb, leaned top of trailer into corner of his and I genuinely didn't see, hear, or feel it happen
>accidental hit and run
>hit and run automatic termination with carrier
>have super comfy dream gig don't want to lose
Do I call and own up to it before they confront me with dash cam footage of me being a dumb ass or hope the other driver just decides not to report it? Or just sit quiet and collect another paycheck or two before getting booted. Fuck man I'm so retarded.
>>
>>28771780
Definitely an own up to it situation if you aren’t a filthy nigger. I wouldn’t phrase it to them as “Oh yeah I just did a hit and run”, though.
>>
>>28771826
Called leadership, explained i believed it a close call without contact but there's fresh damage i only saw in daylight and can't explain otherwise, floated possibility it was pre-existing and unreported that I missed because I hooked up to that trailer at 3am in the pitch black. Left plausible deniability. wrote that down in an accident report and basically seems like it's not going to be considered an accident unless the other party reaches out complaining we struck them and drove off, and they'll proceed from there. Fingers fucking crossed. I guess.
>>
>>28771780
You'll be fine, anon. You would have to be charged and convicted of a hit and run, but you probably aren't even going to go to court. If you did you would have plenty to defend yourself with. The other driver didn't try to flag you down, and may not have even noticed himself. Beyond that, you can't even be sure if it was damaged or not beforehand given you couldn't see shit when you were hooking it up.

any BRITSHIT LORRY DRIVERS/TRUCKERS (specifically UK-based, not euros that have driven here sorry) in the thread?
I've got some QUESTIONS FOR YOU
>>
>>28771973
You did the right thing and you'll likely be fine. Good job on leaving plausible deniability in there. Honestly unless you put a hole in the other trailer I doubt anything ever comes of it, most drivers are scumbags and don't give a single fuck about anything unless it puts them OOS or gets them in trouble. It likely won't even get reported. For a dream job I'd have called it in, for a shitty job I wouldn't have said a word to anyone ever.

Don't. This job is probably so much easier in the US. Imagine having to drive with a truck into one of those tiny French villages, that shit happens idk how some of these depots get approval over there. Or in Germany where past 6PM there literally DO NOT exist parking spots anymore. You have to get off the highway and find some shady ass back alley or find paid parking to stop. One time the fucking paid parking was full. And in Switzerland they have these ramps where you have to back like 300m downhill through a tunnel to the underground to get unloaded. It's mental.

What companies are hiring new drivers with no experience or recent work history? I’ve got no restrictions, every endorsement a TWIC card, and a spotless record. I can pass a hair/urine test, and I have everything I need equipment wise. I can be ready to leave within a day. I’m otherwise broke, and have been trying to get out of poverty for a while now.
>>
>>28773578
Trucking isn’t going to solve your problems.
>>
>>28773607
So work where I can receive a wage higher than minimum wage isn’t going to solve my need for money to survive in the modern era under capitalism? How does that make sense?
>>
>>28773616
Trucking is going to give you more problems than working at a warehouse.
>>
>>28773661
I’ve never worked at a warehouse, so I’ve got no experience with it. I got my Class A license so I could drive a truck, not work in a warehouse. I’ve got no kids, nothing tying me down, I want to be on the road. Why would I get my Class A license and not use it? That’s pretty dim desu. Anyways, who’s hiring right now?
>>
>>28768929 Seeing a few in the odd terminal set up for them, or in test environments is hardly "replacement", and will not be for a very very long time.
>>28768516 is spot on when they say-
>The cost of remaking infrastructure to make automation feasible would be astronomical

I used to work in Logistics, you will never get automation into some of the facilities I dealt with simply because the environment is too chaotic, primitive, or a combination of both to make it work.

At best you'll get a version of what is used on some farm equipment, where the truck will maintain safe lanekeeping and distances, but a live driver is needed once the truck gets off a major road.
>>
>>28773665
How the fuck would I know who’s hiring in your area? This isn’t Google, look it up yourself.
>>
I'm legit curious about the differences between trucking in the EU vs the US. I've been trying to bait you guys to talk about it but you're not taking it. I know you drive more overall over there but I imagine the actual driving is 10x easier because the roads are huge in America and you prolly have parking lots everywhere.

This is the European schedule:
>9 hours of driving a day, 10 hours 2x a week
>4:30 hours max continuous driving followed by 45 minute break
>11 hours big daily break, can be reduced to 9 hours 3x a week
>Max 56 hours of driving a week, 90 in 2 weeks
>45 hour weekly break, can take a reduced 24 hour break if your last was 45

The wages here are like above average for a German but if you're an Eastern European and go back to your country at the end of the shift you're making 3x your country's average wage which is why it's all Eastern Euros hauling goods in the EU.
>>
>>28773935
We cook the log books as God intended
>>
>>28774000
We don't do that in Germany. It's legit impossible too cause you can't mess with the new tacho machines.
>>
>>28773935
There's so many variations and exceptions to the US "clock" that you could go grey listing them all out but the base of it is the 11/14/70 rule.

>14 hour shift (On Duty time)
>11 of those you can Drive
>30 minutes not Driving before 8 hours of Driving are up
>10 hours of Off Duty or Sleeper Berth before getting a full daily clock back
>70 hours driving in 8 days.
>34 hour Restarts

Then there's the Split Sleeper Berth, pausing the 14 for up to 3 hours/day, 16-hour exemption, and on and on and on...

But those are the main points. Anyway, Electronic Logging Devices (ELD's) are supposed to be impossible to fake too but it turns out carriers are just as unscrupulous as shipping lines and just have somebody edit the logs to make it look good for an audit and all the driver knows is that now he's got drive hours he didn't a couple minutes ago and dispatch is yelling at him to get moving.

Parking is a goddamn nightmare here too, especially in the NE. Not enough truck stops, states are cracking down on ramp parking, Wal Mart got pissed off by slovenly drivers, malls and shopping centers never did allow parking, industrial parks are built specifically to discourage parking, and Karens think parked trucks are somehow sinister and call the cops.
>>
>>28774056
Wait so you guys do 8 hours of driving straight with only half an hour break after? Damn.
>>
>>28774056
>Electronic Logging Devices (ELD's) are supposed to be impossible to fake too but it turns out carriers are just as unscrupulous as shipping lines and just have somebody edit the logs to make it look good for an audit
The reason you can't do this in Europe is because the info is stored both on your personal driver card and on the tacho machine's database so you would have to edit both to look identical. I haven't heard of any firms pulling shit like this, even shady ass ones respect the driving hours.
I'm told by older drivers that back in the day they used to pull shit with magnets to make the machines stop logging the driving time but that doesn't work on the newer ones.

Nah its 30m break BEFORE the 8 hr clock is up. Picrel is my ELD, might help explain it better.
>>
>>28774169
To add on, I usually take my 30 after about 5 hours of driving. I leave an hour for finding parking because it can be a bitch sometimes, so I usually drive ~10h in a day.
>>
>>28774169
>>28774172
That's actually crazy. Here we start looking for parking after around 3:30 hours of driving.
If it's the first half of the program and you only need a 45'er you can usually push it to 4-4:15 cause people aren't filling the parking places yet.
>>
>>28774176
I mean we stop to stretch and piss too, its not like its hammer down all day unless you have a tight appointnent to make. That and I love my job so it never really feels like working, especially if I have an audiobook/podcast the hours fly by.

Found a local job that advertised 10-12 hours/5 days but it’s actually 14 hours because management. That’s a 16 hour day if you include commute. Call me a schizo all you like idgaf. Anyone mentioning a company they're currently employed with here is insane or retarded or both. If you can't find anything then go get on with western express, they will take anyone with a pulse, do 6-12 months with them then go get on with a real company. Ignore that other retard saying trucking won't solve your problems, it's a motherfucker of a job but it will drag your ass kicking and screaming out of poverty if you keep your bills low.
>>
>>28773935
70 hour duty clock, 14 hours on duty, 11 hours driving, have to take a 30 minute break within your first 8 hours to get the rest of your drive clock. Average day is 500 miles if you're a competent driver in the midwest, west, or south. 350-400 if you're in the northeast. The roads are generally easy to drive on until you get into cities and small towns at which point you can quickly fuck yourself and need a police escort or tow or both if you're not paying attention and trip planning.

The downside is most drivers are dumbasses, distracted, drunk, disagreeable, or don't care if they live anymore or don't care if you live anymore. The pay is dogshit your first year or two unless you're working your balls off doing food or beverage delivery but it's better than fastfood and if you stick it out and find a good company you can clear six figures after taxes. A competent O/O grosses about 300-400k a year before taxes but actually pays themselves 80-120k if they're not retarded and puts everything else after taxes aside for maintenance and savings. It's a middle class existence, upper middle if you live in bumfuque Egypt away from civilization.

While you can legally run to 8 hours and take the break few actually wait that long. The idea is to wait until you have enough Driving time in so that you can finish the shift without having to take another mandatory 30 minute break. You can, of course, still stop to piss, etc., whenever you want.

When that rule was first implemented you had to log it as Off Duty which technically meant you had to be out of the truck and have no work responsibilities. Basically go inside and eat or something. Some bitched that didn't allow for going in the Sleeper Berth to nap so it got changed to allow that status. Not long after, carriers bitched about the rule costing them .0001 cents so it got changed again to where you could log it as On Duty and now everybody clogs the fuel islands for 30 minutes.
>>
>>28774522
Filing up your truck with diesel and def, walking around and kicking the tires, washing your windows, and checking to make sure nobody was a nigger and pulled your pin or popped your seal takes about 15 minutes. 20 if you're a fatass. If you're not doing all that then you're a scumfuck because you're legally supposed to inspect your load every three hours or 150 miles regardless. Then you take the rest of it at the yellow line while you go piss, wash your hands, and grab something to eat or get a cash advance. Then you check your seal and handle before you get back in the truck. If the guy behind me is in a hurry I'll ELD creep around the lot to get out of their way but every time I hit a fuel island I'm gonna be there for at least twenty minutes between time at the pump and time at the line.

I don't understand groids and crackers that lose their shit about being stuck at the pump behind someone for a couple minutes. You should've planned for your stop to take half an hour minimum before you made it. Like yeah if someone's been blocking you for more than half an hour then you can start getting pissed off but if you're about to stroke out because I grabbed a salad and refilled my drink I'm just going to tell you to kill yourself.
>>
>>28774217
And just after I get THAT fixed, I BLOW A FUCKING DRIVE TIRE. Of course as I'm heading home for christmas, life decides to violate me without lube.
>>
>>28774531
>Then you take the rest of it at the yellow line while you go
Not all ELD's will allow movement without going to Drive unless you go to Yard Move and some companies don't allow that status which makes many drivers not want to risk moving at all. Company I'm with for instance uses Motive and I can't move at all without it going to Drive unless I'm in Yard Move, which is an allowable On-Duty status anyway. Not that it matters for this since we fuel at the yard and don't even really need the ELD's since we run inside the 150 air mile exemption area.

To drive to the pub after unloading, of course!
>>
>>28774553
Mine will let me do 5mph in off or on duty and sleeper birth, but if I go any faster it goes to drive time. The downside is we don't have yard move and we don't have PC. It's come in handy a bunch of times to be able to creep along without my clock status getting changed.

But yeah, unless it's 3am and dead and there's a bunch of open fuel lanes, taking a 30 knowing you can't move is douche behavior and is worth towing somebody.
>>
>>28774562
Company I'm with in the US has "creatively" adjusted my logs one time ever in half a year and it was for a super hot load that would've cost them a contract if it didn't get delivered on time. France would be so nice to drive through if they just had depots built for humans. All the parking places are free, generally available and well taken care of. Roads are great.
