The Mustang II was one of the biggest flops in automotive history both mechanically and in sales. They're basically handed GM the win when the standards were so low that all you had to do was show up to win. They tried winning some market back with the Cobra but Smokey and the Bandit came out around the same time putting the Trans-Am in such high demand that the people started buying Z28 Camaros because Pontiac dealers would sell Firebirds as fast as the transporter could unload them. Ford did get their act together the Foxbody and had a nearly 5 year head start against the Turd gen F-bodies but the Z28/IROC and Trans-Am/GTA were objectively the better cars. GM did sort of give up halfway through the 4th gen and there is a reason why there are still tons of SN95s on the road while the remaining 4th gen F-bodies are either garage queens or rat-rods at this point. The rivalry between the two (or 3) is one of the most important in American car culture yet because they're the poster car for (man) children, and probably the first cars that caught our attention as boys, it is mostly a glossed over team sport. I've driven a S550 GT, GT Perf. and my SS. I chose the SS for a reason. I would say the GTP is slightly more capable than a regular SS but it doesn't feel as effortless or sharp. While the Coyote is a great engine, especially when boosted, I don't think DOHC is part of the pony car experience. And the MT82 is a tragedy. Even the Camaro comes with a TR3160 on the base model. You need a Mach 1 to get that.

Mustangs have been free to have however much performance they want while the F-bodies had to live beneath the Corvette and the late C3 and early C4 were barely making 200hp in most configurations. The few times any of the divisions managed to sneak out something more powerful than the 'Vette GM cuts it after just a year or two or imposes strict production limits. Ford could have been 20 years ahead of the curve if they further developed the SVO's 2.3T.

While developing the GTO, Pontiac told GM execs they could get even more performance by just making a smaller car but they dismissed it claiming that nobody wanted a small car. Guess what came out less than a year later. GM scrambled for a response with the project originally being given to Pontiac before executives changed their mind and gave it to Chevy as they saw Pontiac as being above Ford. Pontiac got the consolation prize of being allowed their own version despite having the same idea around the same time that Ford did.
