Has anyone ever bought anything from Bring a Trailer?
I am looking for a QRD on the buying, bidding, and what kind fees and shit there will be.
There is a truck on there right now that I have always wanted, and I am dying to buy it.
Its from a private seller, its a day's drive away, I am considering getting it shipped.

are you unable to read their buying guide?
https://bringatrailer.com/how-bat-works/
>Buyers pay a 5% or 10% fee on top of the final sale price to BaT, based on the auction category. The minimum fee is $250, and is capped at either $4,000 (€4,000 for EU bidders and £3,200 for UK bidders) or $7,500 (€7,500 for EU bidders and £6,000 for UK bidders), again depending on the auction category.
it's an auction, with some level (debatable) of qualification to be listed

thanks for that info.
5% aint bad. my state sales tax is also 5%. I dont think I can fudge this one and say I bought the car for $100.
I got a shipping quote for $900, so thats not bad.
my cap for this truck is $10,000. Guess I'll have to see where this auction goes.

Literally all of that is laid out in plain language on their website.

NTA but it's more interesting to ask a question and start a conversation instead of just doing the thing
>>
>>28766937
I'm positive you've made this exact same post before after asking another incredibly stupid question.
This is not starting a conversation. You asked a question with an objective answer that was easy to find.
No, asking what 2+2 is is not a conversation starter. Asking how to spell Kuwait is not a conversation starter.

I dunno what else you want to know in terms of cost, as that's all pretty straightforward on the website.

I bought my car off there. Engine blew up a month later. lol subarus

Do you know what "NTA" means? Take your meds.

based on the few cars that ive looked at in person ( like the black XT6 with custom milled OZ wheels that sold on there https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-subaru-xt/) the bar seems quite low.
This car when i looked at it in 2019 was rotted out, blown and leaking front and rear diffs, rattles, squeaks, failing transmission, low on power. Paint was WAY WAY worse than it appeared and looked more like a maaco job, with lots of deep dints and dings that were painted over.

I have tried to bid on a few cars in the last year or two, usually get outbid by a brand new account that then doesn't pay and the car either gets relisted, or sold elsewhere. At least for the things I look at it seems shady at best.

I've had good experiences and I've had one similar to >>28767019
it can be a toss up if they're not a reputable seller who's not selling a lot of cars on the site. BaT is essentially just a middleman that takes no responsibility for anything so it's on you to really do your homework on the car and the seller
>>
>>28766937
Instead of actually purchasing a vehicle you had no intentions of anyways.

What happens if you don't honer your winning bid?
They have your credit card info
What will BaT do?
>>
I bought a car on there. You just pay a fee that BaT charges your card as soon as you win the auction. I had zero interaction with BaT. Like other anon said they’re just a middleman. The dealer called me right away and we talked about payment and shipping. He hooked me up with a shipper, which was the same price as BaT would’ve charged me so I went with that. Your experience will vary, the person you’re buying from could be a scumbag and sell you a piece of shit or not. If you’re a day away I would message them and ask to look at it so you’re sure if you wanna bid. Mine was in good condition but I still found a few minor issues and leaks that the dealer hadn’t disclosed. By then I had it shipped across the country so not much I could do other than fix it myself. If you’re gonna be spending a lot of money then go look at it in person otherwise you may end up getting stuck with a headache
>>
>>28768655
thanks for that info anon.
Can you tell me how payment for the vehicle is arranged? like is that strictly between me and the seller?
once BaT takes their 5%, are they out of the picture? if the rest of the deal falls through, are they going to come after me for not buying the car?
seems like the only risk is losing the 5% to bat
>>
>>28768557
They get their buyers fee the time the bid is placed. They don't care what happens after that. If the seller makes a complaint then they'll ban your account for wasting everyone's time.
>>
>>28768842
Yeah BaT takes their cut then everything is between you and the dealer. They have your card but I can’t imagine them actually coming after you if you don’t pay. Not like they’re gonna have much luck going around charging peoples credit cards $20,000.
My question is why are you planning on bidding if you’re not sure you’re gonna actually buy it. Sounds like nig tier behavior
>>
>>28770464
He didn't say he wasn't planning on buying it, he just said if the deal falls through. I've won 2 different auctions that things didn't work out, both times due to the seller still having a loan on the car. It happens.
>>
>>28770480
Did bat refund you their fee if the purchase fell through?
>>
>>28770944
Yes but only because it wasn't my fault.
>>
>>28766482
In Massholechussetts they tax on book value, I bet every state is the same due to (((politicians))).
>>
>>28766457
I've both bought and sold on BaT, although I've never used the verified checkout they added more recently.

Aside from the fees everyone already mentioned, the process is fairly simple. You and the other party work out the logistics of shipping or meeting somewhere, and BaT recommends payment only by wire.

An example of how one of my sales went:
>auction ends, contact winning bidder via email
>later talk to the winning bidder on the phone
>provide wire transfer instructions and a bill of sale
>buyer is hesitant to wire money to a stranger, but does eventually
>overnight title to buyer
>buyer sends a private transporter to pick the car up
>all done, never hear from him again
>>
>>28771106
Also, I'll say driving home is more fun than shipping if you can do it. I bought a car off BaT that I took home that way, met the seller at the airport garage and drove it home. Made for a 25 hour day and a really memorable trip. I later sold that car on BaT to a guy who did the same thing when he bought it.
>>
>>28767017
i think he's just copy pasting for lulz
>>
>>28771108
I would drive but this particular vehicle has 10 year old tires.
Looks like it was rebougjt twice since 2020 and not really used.
As much as I would love to drive it is rather ship it than pay for a last minute one way flight and be at the mercy of the car and whatever basic tools I can bring with me on a plane. Which isn't much
