Why would you get a boring ass sedan from the premier wagon manufacturer?

Because wagons are gay and look like a baby has shit in his diaper, that's why.

Yes? That car has peak aesthetics. Still shines like a king whenever I spot one on the roads. Confident but also not too overdone. Its every angle is peak aesthetics.

It's a very pretty car, very comfortable and the inline 5 sounds great. The steering racks go bad.

S80 with the Yamaha V8 was really the peak for that era of Volvo.
I used to think they looked good but now I just see them as deebly goncerned bars of soap.

>>28768156
nobody has coherently explained to me what real AWD is and how it differs from the "fake" kind other than suggesting that always-on AWD is "real"
>>
My parents had an S60 2.5T AWD that they got when I was a high school. It eventually apparently died on the highway somewhere and they had it towed to the dealer and it was a hassle to get it replaced and they never got a Volvo again - replaced it with an Acura TL. It was a nice car but the steering was kinda eh and there was some torque steer, I mean the AWD mostly resolved it but it wasn't perfect. The turbo mostly made boost in high revs and it was a bit gutless at low ones. Lots of fun to wring out. I barely got to drive it, somehow my parents went on vacation and I drove it to school going as fast as possible, cop pulled me over, told him I was late for a test, and he let me go with a warning. Also it had the "sport" package and that meant bigger wheel and the wheels were too big for the wells and would scrape when you turned it hard.
>>
>>28768575
Haldex cars tend to be heavily front wheel biased, so they handle like FWD cars until the wheels start to slip.
>>
>>28768580
wouldn't it waste a huge amount of fuel and wear the clutch out way sooner to have the AWD system ALWAYS on? I guess you just mean "real" AWD is always transferring power to the rear wheels?
>Haldex cars tend to be heavily front wheel biased
well, the volvo I had in the early 2000s and the Kia I have now are both FWD based AWD but the AWD is much smoother in the Kia and when you floor it there's less jiggle it's very very subtle. I mean yeah, around bends it kinda sucks you aren't gonna go as fast as a RWD car, but the tradeoff is more space inside.
>>
>>28768581
It's not a huge amount, but yeah they do use more fuel.
>>
>>28768575
>haldex system which sends 95 percent of the torque to the front wheels under normal driving conditions and can send up to 30 percent to the rear wheels as necessary.

You're a fwd car most of the time and at best you're 70% front, 30% rear. Compare that to true AWD systems that are always 50/50.

If the engine is longitudinal, it's true AWD. If it's transverse, it's FWD with assist.

My autism/OCD absolutely hates cars that incorporate the side windows as an overall shape, without maximizing the visual DLO (daylight opening) by leaving the pillars unpainted. Just like the MK4 Jetta in particular, or a multitude of what are typically cheap economy cars, as far as sedans go at least.
The distance from the door to the front wheel opening also is a dead giveaway that it's FWD, which considering that this was intended to be a compact exec 3 Series/C Class competitor, is not exactly a positive thing either.
Since I'm bored I decided to see what it'd look like with a slightly longer wheelbase, a slightly wider track and the B pillar blacked out. Still not what I'd call peak, but slightly closer in my opinion.

Bad take altho generally true up to a point.

Its really the case of differential and power distribution. Evos, Delta Integrales and a few oddballs like the Alfa 159 Q4 have a true AWD system with multiple differentials and power going to all four wheels all the time.

Some longitudinal cars like BMW xdrive and Merc 4Matic are essentially RWD with assist.
