In terms of sheer bliss and fulfillment, it was driving back home in my newly purchased MGB GT V8. Being one of my dream cars made the drive special enough for me, but it wasn't long after I set off that I came upon a stretch of road that was just gorgeous. I was finally sat in my dream car, crusing along a fantastic road that had a stunning scenic view above all the towns and country side, all while I was listening to a throaty V8 soundtrack with my arm out the window. I felt as if I had been born for that exact moment, and will admit that I nearly shed a tear. Everything was just right in the world, y'know? It felt like the final scene in a movie just before the credits roll.

When I drove down to Grand Isle, LA and got to drive all the backtrails in the beach. Got to see all the old boomers with their mechanical treasures at a show in Raceway. Past Morgan City, the causeway there was like 50ft above the ground where I got to see old shipwrecks and massive gators. Finally got to the islands and got everything sandy and muddy until only the ocean was left in front of me. Got back to the one main road where some bitch in a tahoe tailgated me until she realized she was getting mud slung all over her windshield. Then stopped at the little convenience store there for gas and some excellent homemade spicy fried chicken. Then drove some more, hit up a garage sale where I picked up a great Shakespear pin reel, walked the beach for shells, power washed off my undercarriage to remove the mud and salt and drove home. Great fucking day.

I wouldn't call it a happy driving experience, but my most positive and most memorable one was a 3 day coast to coast drive in my recently deceased father's Impala to deliver it to my sister as part of her inheritance.

After flying out to the other side of the country, spending a week sleeping in the house with a mold-outline where my dad had laid decomposing waiting on someone to notice he had passed, after dealing with all the banks and courts and all that bullshit to get power of estate and get everything in motion, it was all done and I was finally free to leave it all behind me.

Just me, this nice boomer cruiser of his, and thousands and thousands of road underneath my wheels. I did the trip in three days, sleeping in the car for only a couple hours each night, immensely thankful to be able to have an empty mind and not have to think about anything for a while. It brought a lot of closure to me, helping me move past the rawness of everything that had just happened.

>That's a lovely collection, something like an XK120 or 140 would fit in beautifully. What exactly do you have?
Thanks! Currently I have a 1996 MX5, the 1973 MGB GT V8 previously pictured, a 1964 Vanden Plas 4 Litre R, a 1950 Ford V8 Pilot, and I recently bought a 1973 Reliant Scimitar GTE that I'm picking up tomorrow. I did also have a 1970 FIAT 500, a 1936 Morris 8 van (pic rel), and a 1947 Fordson 7v, but I sold those a couple months ago, unfortunately.

Absolutely smashing collection anon, why did you go for cars of this period? A friends dad likes to take his Ford Model A and Austin 7 on hill climbs. The chap I picked my Aston up from was also selling an Ivory with deep red interior, brown leather strap on the bonnet 1955 MGA, stunning looking thing. What will be next to add to your collection?

>that green is fantastic.
I got immensely lucky. They only made 4 in that colour world wide, and only 2 in the UK. It's sister car went up for sale a month before this one did. The other has the interior of a smoking jacket where mine is ivory and green.

8 or 9, so I read. They must have been good for her to keep going back, but it really makes you wonder why she needed so many.

>Absolutely smashing collection anon, why did you go for cars of this period?
Thanks~ I'm into pretty much anything from any generation, but there's just something about 20's, 30's, and 40's stuff that really tickles my fancy. The purely mechanical nature and overall serviceability is just a marvel to me, and I find the driving experience to be extremely enjoyable, especially the soundtrack. Engine and exhaust notes of vehicles from that period just have a certain something that's not present on later cars - probably due to the awfully inefficient exhaust routing and design thay was common in early engines.

>A friends dad likes to take his Ford Model A and Austin 7 on hill climbs.
That's cool, I love watching those, and also the trials those cars often compete in. We sold a Standard Vanguard to a bloke who had a period correct supercharged Model A chassis he used for trails, and the thing looked lethal.

>The chap I picked my Aston up from was also selling an Ivory with deep red interior, brown leather strap on the bonnet 1955 MGA, stunning looking thing.
Great combo, and it's surprising to see how much they've dropped off in value over the last few years. A shame, really, as it shows that fewer and fewer people are showing interest.

>What will be next to add to your collection?
Hard to say. Ideally I want a Ford Model 18 Fordor, but they're quite thin on the ground. I also have a burning itch for a TVR Griffith, and very nearly won a 430 pre-cat at auction a month ago, but my winning bid was under the seller's reserve and he declined it, which is a shame.

Lucky indeed, it's incredibly striking, and really suits the car's lines and proportions. Genuinely surprised that colour wasn't specced on more cars. What's the name of that colour? Would be interesting to see how often it's used on other models.

Interesting you are attracted to that much earlier period, which from your description Incompletely understand. However the only cars from that period that appeals to me is the Bentley Blower Six Speed and the Jaguar XK120. I tend to yearn for cars that are late 50's or early 60's but they are your sought after DB4 GT/5/6/Jag XK's, Mk10 and E-types. Surprising you're after a Griffith, I keep eyeing up Cerbera's along with a Morgan plus 4.

>>28777620
Cooooorrrrr, I love a Mk10. Beautiful ivory and red combination as well! However it's one of the only cars i'd own where the first colour pick is black. Such a sinister looking thing. I'm very envious.
>Colour
It's called Almond Green. It was on other models probably in a slightly larger number as the Rapide I own was only produced from 2010-12 so they only made about 1800 in total and there's only about 800 in the UK currently. However from that period as you know, the popular thing was to get your car in businessman's grey, black, silver or white if you were feeling daring. And due to the influence of James Bond Grey/Silver is the overwhelming choice, most Aston's across the range at that period I think it was about 80-85% were black, silver, grey or white. Then blue was the next one in line. I know for the Rapide in Britain there's only 8 in any shade of Green. I agree as well, it's surprising more didn't pick it, it's not far from their old 1959 racing green they used at le mans.

>I tend to yearn for cars that are late 50's or early 60's
To be fair, that's sort of when they become useable day to day, which makes them much more attractive to live with. My Morris 8 and Fordson, though admittedly commercial, would desperately struggle to get anywhere near 40 and over, yet the Vanden Plas will quite happily blend in with the pace of modern traffic, and performs exceptionally well as my daily driver.

>Surprising you're after a Griffith
I used to play my brother's copy of Gran Turismo 1 quite a lot as a child, and there was one race in particular that had me spend countless hours trying to (unsuccessfully) chase down a Raspberry Metallic Griffith 500. That car has been permanently etched into my memory because of that, and it's probably the only car with EFI that my heart genuinely aches for.

>I keep eyeing up Cerbera's along with a Morgan plus 4
The Cerbera I understand completely, but the Morgan I find interesting. What draws you to it? I knew a woman who had a 4/4 for quite some time, but I never had the opportunity to drive it and so never got to form much of an opinion.

>I'm very envious.
I wouldn't be - The timing belt on our van snapped halfway into our 600 mile journey up to Scotland to collect it, then after eventually getting it back and on our driveway, it just sat for a month under a cover until a bloke, who came to buy my dad's Silver Shadow's, saw it and fell in love with it. He and his business partners bought all three cars and we never saw it again. Such a stunning car, and we never really got to enjoy it.

>due to the influence of James Bond Grey/Silver is the overwhelming choice
James Bond's worst contribution to the world, as far as I'm concerned.

Jesus, I didn't think it was *that* bad. Not saying they don't look good in greyscale, but you'd think people would want some colour to really emphasise the contours of the body. Also baffles me how blue was the next choice for people after that, and not green. Green is the first colour I think of when I think of Aston as a brand.

Wow, that's surprisingly vocal for what is essentially a family car, and that V12 has a pretty aggressive exhaust note. Is that entirely standard?

>>28778010
A real shame about that Jag, that you guys didn't get to experience it more. I recognise you now from other threads and the Silver Shadow's. I can see where you get your taste in cars
>50s & 60's cars
While there is an element of that, I think it's the design language of the cars of that period that I do love. Some of the prettiest cars ever made in my opinion are from the 50's and 60's. Such as the DB4 GT, DB5, E-type, 250 GTO, the Lola's/GT40, AC Ace, Alpine A110, the Stingray Corvette, Mustang, Jensen Interceptor and I could keep going on.

>Morgan Plus 4
I've always liked all Morgan's. I'd love to own one. They just appeal with not just their design but how they are made. Pic rel when I went to the factory this year which made me want to own one even more. But I like the idea of a simple 4 cylinder convertible Morgan, sending it down country lanes while shouting tally ho. They just make you smile when you see them, unfortunately i've yet to drive one my self. Morgan's have a sense of occasion and fun about themselves, and I love that.

>Colour
Unfortunately it was worse than I thought it was going to be. Obviously years ago cars use to have more colour but that whole era in the 2000's of pushing the idea of resale value absolutely went overboard. I guarantee if you go through Aston Martin on Autotrader especially VH platform ones the overwhelming sea of Grey, Silver and Black makes hunting for what you want a bit of slog. I do agree, they look good in grey scale, but it's tedious when it's all you see. For me it's Jaguar and green, ironically as it's our racing colour. Green is considered an unlucky car colour in this country which I still hear from some people.

Once when my car went 350 miles without a breakdown... As you can tell, every car that I have owned has been a shitheap that has left me on the side of the road.

>Noise
It's extremely vocal and it's really loud when you push it up the rev range. As far as I know, only the exhaust valves have been removed, making it more vocal sub 3.5k rpm. Apart from that, it is as it should be. When I first joined the owners club, and went to a driving event I was being followed by a gentleman and his friend in a generation 2 Vanquish. At our first stopping point they approached me and were shocked by the sheer noise it made, especially when i booted it. As it seems the Rapide isn't even that common in the Aston world either. They thought it was going to be a quieter family car as well. If you boot it in first and change gear at around 6k rpm it makes a very bassy, gravely snort like an AMG as well. The soundtrack is intoxicating and hooligan tier. But I wouldn't change it for anything.
