Pray for me anons. I replaced the started in my 2010 V6 Colorado, and it started perfect, ran for 10 seconds, turned itself off, and the battery started smoking. I took the negative terminal off, and both leads were extremely hot. The positive and earth are both run in the same conduit, and I can see it has melted a bit. My guess is I mashed the wiring while trying to refit the engine mount, or the flexible metal heat shield for the starter was touching the solenoid post (which would make sense as I connected the battery an hour before starting it with no issues)

Now the negative and positive leads test continuous, meaning I'll have to replace them (hopefully nothing else), but with the wiring removed from the starter, with the starter still fitted to the car, the small terminal on the starter tests as continuous to earth. Is this normal?

yeah its earthed to the engine. I can see you squashed the cable, just replace it.

No, that's where it melted. Why would (((they))) run this harness together like this. I miss having the earth on its own harness.

you must have crossed something over for it to get that hot or there's a poor ground, no ground on the engine.

I dismantled the harness, it's only the earth wire thats fried, the rest is immaculate. This confirms the heat shield must have rested on the solenoid and gone live when I started it. Pic related, not my starter but similar heat shield. You can't remove the starter bolts without bending the heat shield a bit, and you can't remove the engine mount without bending it more. If I do the job again, I'm pulling the engine, it would have been faster.

The only wires removed were the 2 that go to the starter, and the negative battery terminal.

Sounds like a nightmare. Only time I've melted a ground was due to a poor earth on a winch

I can't find large conduit on a Sunday, and this eliminates it from shorting out regardless. Will go fit it soon, pray for me.

Youre not suppose to let the smoke out of the wires. Its a bitch to put back in.
Now you'll have to sacrifice a koala or 2 large pythons to appease the Gods to prevent it from happening again.
