I want to get a V6 that isn't obnoxious to wrench, and is around or under $20,000. Anyone have any good ideas?

Why would you ever go out of your way to get a six cylinder car? They're unremarkable in every way and four and eight cylinders will sound better.
>>
>>28773221
Because they tend to be lighter and sportier.

By being making less power and sounding worse? What sort of literal retarded cope is this?

Honda with J series V6
either get a manual or one that's old enough that it doesn't have VCM and you're golden

You will buy a 350z and that is final.

X2, available in s197 or s550. Just beware the 2011 and 2012 model years, those had the bad driveshaft that can grenade if you go over 120 mph or so. They also sound way better than they deserve to with a exhaust on them. Easy 500 to the tire on stock bottom end with the mafia racing Turbo kit. My buddy had one for a while and it was genuinely a fun car. It's almost a shame that they're cursed to live in the shadow of the V8 cars because they genuinely were the American 370z.

Why? V6 is the engine you get when you can't afford a V8. They're the compromise, the boring one.

idk, v6 seems briddy crammed in there.
there are some older cars that can fit a v8 but come fitted with shorter engines.

You do know some people want a car that can have some speed but also not rev twice and drain the gas tank, right? And since the OP is about cars under $20,000, that automatically deletes all your poorly designed German slop

the issue with V6 isn't balance, it's the mechanical complexity of two cylinder heads without the huge displacement (and power) of a V8

The GM 3.8's are genuinely bombproof and will outlive the goddamn chassis IF you keep up on their maintenance, they're a little fucky to get into but not obnoxious like the modern-day European things

Only other bulletproof V6 I have experience wrenching is the Essex V6, but you're not gonna find one in a car for under $20K nowadays

Balance is a meme. A simple GTR takes a massive diarrhea shart all over your "balanced" meme engine.

I'd say the 2017 version has striking looks, and of course is faster; it's just not a reproduction of the gt40.

the "balance" cope is wrenchlette fud

a 90 degree v6 is unbalanced

a 60 or 120 degree v6 with a sequential firing order is balanced

a 180 degree flat six like porsches have isn't balanced but because it is essentially a boxer the 3rd order oscillation that a 90 degree V6 would otherwise have is counteracted

basically the balance issue comes from the old days when V6s were derived from v8s by lopping two cylinders off. V6s haven't been made this way for nearly 40 years. no modern v6 incorporates a balance shaft. All of them are 60 degrees with a 1-2-3-4-5-6 firing order and drive so smoothly people forget they're there.

>the "balance" cope is wrenchlette fud
yes

>90 degree v6 is unbalanced
yes

>60 or 120 degree v6 with a sequential firing order is balanced
no.

>a 180 degree flat six like porsches have isn't balanced but ...
also no
and don't quit your day job to become an engineer

>basically the balance issue comes from the old days when V6s were derived from v8s
also also no

so, here's the skinny
-no v6 is perfectly balanced by itself. they ALWAYS have a primary imbalance. you ALWAYS need counterweights or balancing shafts
-but that doesn't matter, because IRL we DO add counterweights/balancing shafts, so they are perfectly balanced in practice. yes, at the cost of extra rotating mass somewhere, no, that's isn't significant.
-the bank angle is important because it controls the timing of the firing of the cylinders. the timing cycle of a 4 stroke engine is 720 degrees (2x 360, because the crank needs to rotate twice before you fire the same cylinder again). and, 720/6 = 120. so, 120deg is the v6 bank angle that naturally gives you the correct, evenly spaced firing interval
-except ofc, 120deg bank angle is stupid, its FAR too wide, and only ever used in race cars and the like. iirc there's some le mans cars that used it? or f1?
-the way to fix this is with offset crank pins. so, instead of opposite cylinders sharing the same crank pin, which would result in an uneven firing interval on anything except 120deg, you split the crank pin into 2, and arrange it so that they are offset in such a way so that the cylinders fire evenly. and you can do this with 90 and 60deg v6s
-so, between counterweights/balancing shafts and offset crank pins, we can make a v6 that is perfectly balanced and has the correct even firing interval

>inb4 muh v8
yes, a v8 is better, but poor americans and rich euros need something cheaper

>inb4 muh 2 heads
for poor euros and 3rd worlders, i4s are also a thing

>muh i6
too long, too tall, too heavy. good for turbo diesels, but that's about it.
