Stage 1: The price wars
>gasoline demand drops
>refineries and gas stations lower their prices to compete against each other for the dwindling demand
Stage 2: The shakeout
>demand and prices get too low to sustain the fixed costs of running a refinery or gas station, and so the lower profit ones shut down
>this causes supply shortages and spikes in pricing
>with less gas stations and refineries, any unplanned outage or shutdowns loss will create supply shocks, causing prices to fluctuate more rapidly
Stage 3: The Death of the mass market
>as prices of gas goes up and services become sparser, demand falls sharply, creating a self feeding death spiral
>the economics of scale break down heavily and the price becomes completely uneconomical for mass consumption
>gasoline becomes a niche product only the rich or hobbyists can afford to keep their old cars running
>anything that relied on the economics of mass market gas usage dies off
>>

their stocks are so high because (in no particular order)
-the model y was best selling car in the world 2 years in a row(and its still the #1 electric, despite months long production shutdowns for retooling and a giant anti-elon/anti-tesla propaganda campaing. and literal showroom firebombings). and the model 3 ain't that far behind neither
-they have exceptional self-driving tech, which irl is basically 99% done, and it alone is a reason to buy a tesla over anything else (ok, ok, except if you have serious reasons to avoid EV altogether, those do exist)
-as a consequence of the above, they're assumed to also be closer than anyone else to proper robotaxis. not the gay, geofenced, expensive sensor laden bullshit that waymo is doing, but the real deal flooding the market and mogging everyone else sort
-they are actually profitable. very profitable. overall profitability top tier for the auto industry, and that's EV only. the only other mfg that is making a profit on EVs is byd, or at least they claim to. trad mfgs and other ev startups are straight up losing money on their EV operations

it doesn't really make too much sense that the particular method of propulsion used by a consumer passenger car would be a political issue for the general population.

it certainly makes sense for it to be a political issue at a higher level -- businesses or investments are at stake. but for the way ~75% (or maybe higher) of people in the general population use their vehicles, it doesn't seem to be a particularly relevant issue.

certainly some people need to tow. some people need to travel very long distances on a regular basis, so you understand it from that angle, but i don't know if that is the majority of end use consumers who own passenger vehicles. certainly the commercial vehicle segment isn't going to be switching over wholesale any time soon.

Self-driving will never work without a major fundamental overhaul of the entire transportation network, most notably to remove all human-driven cars from the road so that the entire network of vehicles can accurately predict what all the other vehicles are going to do in advance, and thus correctly drive the vehicle you're in without banging into Paco and his half-dead Geo Metro. Since neither government nor private sector is likely to front the enormous up-front cost of giving every American an EV at a loss to make this happen, it is and always will be an expensive boondoggle with no practical use.

I never said it was, simmer down faggot. I only said that people virtue signal as a means to push EVs as an alternative and that it was always performative fakery. To be entirely fair, oil companies' profits are currently the majority 'real' sector of the economy, with real estate ballooned up to ten times its actual value and most other programs of technological advancement incremental at best for the last 30-odd years. Stored Hydrocarbons are still the most efficient energy source we have, they're still going to be the way forward for the next century or two until we find something better (And better for the planet doesn't matter, what we care about is whether or not its better for humans, and EVs currently aren't) and so protecting America's oil industry is actually very important.

Jesus fucking christ, we have a very likely/possible World War coming up sometime in the next couple of decades. This isn't the time to overturn industry leaders in favor of your communist bullshit like saving the planet. Downsides to ICE exist. People just don't fucking care. The human race ran out of good will 50 years ago when it became clear that perpetual peace and world trade were just making things better for browns and asians and fucking over all the actual people. The human race is going to go down whatever path is best for us, nobody gives a shit about the planet, the future generations, the air we breathe, the water we drink, or any other performative green bullshit, excepting insofar as it directly impacts them personally and no further than that. No exceptions.

>Jesus fucking christ, we have a very likely/possible World War coming up sometime in the next couple of decades.
yeah, this isn't happening. feel free to send your own kids, though, mordecai.

It will happen and all of the markets have already begun turning in directions indicative of that. Nobody's kids have to go, we already amended the Selective Service Act so that you don't have to sign up for the draft and you don't have to be an American Citizen to get drafted. They're going to send the Mexicans and Chink Diaspora to fight the war and use force multipliers and self-flying aircraft to fight most of it, then just bomb all the infrastructure and let the chinks starve to death. Its not complicated, Anon.
