My first insurance renewal is up soon but I'm wondering if this is normal. I'm 22 and live in a fairly bad area and this is my first car. Its a 2007 fiesta zetec. My first year with them cost me around 200 a month and managed to get my first NCB. after doing some digging and teling them of lower options, now they're offering me around 170 a month. I have found another insurer whose offering me a cheaper policy (150) and I am considering switching, but I don't know if this is a good idea or not?
£150 a month is pretty awesome. When i was 22 i was paying like £290.
>>28775875>My first year with them cost me around 200 a monthJesus imagine paying more for insurance in a year than what the actual car is worth. Just skip all coverage insurance if you're driving a shitbox kid.
>>28775875>offering me around 170 a monthThat is still a lot. You can get it down to £40 or even £20 a month.Whatever date you've set for it to start, put it as far away as possible, typically a month. That brings down the quotes a lot (tells insurer that you aren't in a rush to insure the car). Name a second driver. Be generous about job description.>I have found another insurer whose offering me a cheaper policy (150) and I am considering switching, but I don't know if this is a good idea or not?I always switch to the cheapest quote possible with the add-ons I need.
>>28775901>When i was 22 i was paying like £290Holy shit. what were you driving?
>>28775910The insurance cost is for the money you are liable for if you hit some one else's car or what it will cost to feed you through a tube if you end up as a vegetable or make some one else a vegetable.
>>28775910I don't know where you're from, but its a legal requirement to have coverage for your vehicle in the UK
>>28775875Thank fucking god I don't live in the UK.When I was 18, my first car (1994 Commodore) cost me $300AUD a year for Third Party, Fire, and Theft insurance. My current car (2004 Commodore) still costs that much.
>>28775875I pay 200 € per year for my motorcycle
>>28775875Always shop around for the cheapest quote; being loyal to your insurance provider will yield you nothing in return. Also, why are you paying monthly? They tack interest on top if you're paying monthly, and the higher your quote, the higher the amount of interest you'll be paying. I know that most young people are broke as fuck, but even if you have to have your parents pay for it and you pay *them* back, it's better than giving extra money to the insurance company for quite literally no reason. A couple extra tips - As >>28775947 has said, always try to quote about a month in advance (I think the precise number is 27 days, but I'm not 100% on that) as it will make your quote cheaper, and if your car has parking sensors, make sure to mention it in the vehicle addons/modifications or whatever as this will also lower your quote by a small margin.
the only thing god has given me in this life is getting away with not having car insurance all these years.
>>28776215The current provider im with right now is only expecting one last payment from me by the end if the month. My plan is this: pay the final instalment thus completing the contract, then cancel my policy with them and switch over to the cheaper insurance provider next month after i get my paycheck so i can put down the deposit.
>>28775875Literally had the exact same first car a few years ago. Pretty sure my insurance cost almost the same as the car and I paid annually, not monthly. If you want to change to a cheap policy, do it. Try not to crash it as all that really matters is your No Claims Bonus. Get at least three years of no claiming and hopefully, you won't be paying out the ass for the rest of your life.
>>28776215>>28776891The reason why I go monthly is because its easier to manage. Id rather not give my savings a huge hit when I can slowly pay that amount over time.
Quick question: Im thinking of selling my car halfway through next year. If I cancel my policy halfway through, and depending on my policy, is there a cancellation charge or would I still have to pay the rest of what I owe them?
>>28776909You won't have to pay the rest, but there will be a cancellation charge.
>>28776909No. They’ll probably be able to switch it over easily>>28775875You should be able to get more money off it. Stick your parents on or someone else who isn’t young as a named driver. Play around with your job title. Don’t flat out lie but you can stretch it a bit to benefit you and still be covered. Also, limit the mileage. Work out how many miles you did last year and insure it to that, or thereaboutsGiven that you’re driving an old, small car you can easily get money off it. Or give Adrian Flux a ring, I think they do young drivers insurance and they’re a proper broker. Oh and if you’re a student don’t bother about getting it insured for anything other than social
>bad areaInsure it at a family member who lives in a good area>youngPut someone who isn’t young on the policy>mileageGive them the lowest feasible number>commutingif you have an accident you were going to the shops. Get it insured for social only. It isn’t any business of theirs if you’ve got a job or not. If you do drive it to work, only tell them this if you keep it on works premises when you’re there. If you are in a public car park/the street it literally isn’t their business >your carHas whatever security feature that reduces your paymentThis means you’re still covered if you crash into someone. You’re still covered if it gets stolen. You’re still covered, you just aren’t being a crypto boomer. Fuck the breakdown and glass and all that shit off too
