The factory Ford team was racing the Cobra fox body mustang in the same series that Saleen was running their cars.
The Cobra wing was purely aesthetics (i personally think it looks like shit) and was doing nothing for downforce in the straights and they kept losing to Saleens.
Ford found a loophole in the rules that because the Saleen was available through Ford dealers, their wing was a legal option. They swapped the Saleen wing onto the Cobras and were then competitive.
