All I want is a single cab, long bed truck.
my budget is $15-25k
I have no brand allegiance
2WD is fine with me
Nothing too old, or too modern.
What are my options?
>>
3rd gen Ford Ranger
or a 1st gen Colorado if you're fine with the size
You can get clean low mile examples of both for 15k and ride them for the next 20 years

It's like Ford knew and sold all of them to US government

old: avoid ford
new: get a ford

Pffft, the older ones are fine. If you want to cheap out you can get an older one. Just make sure you get one with a good engine like the modular V8.

Maybe 99 is too old for you but I found my Ranger with 74k on it for $7.5k. RWD, standard trans, Vulcan V6 inside is basically bulletproof. Not a whole lot of power for heavy pulling or carrying but the long bed lets me take my dirt bike around no prob.

Trug market is mostly retired boomers who still want a trug shaped vehicle but don't need or want an actual trug. Their demands resulted in a trug shaped SUV with long cabin short vestigial bed, high seated position, luxury-esque amenities. Tradie market didn't prevent this as tradies moved away from pickups towards commercial vans and small box trucks instead.
>>
>>28785673
It looks so much better, man I fucking hate new trucks
>>
>>28785833
I drive Fed fleet trucks, there's a reason they get replaced at 75k. They're base/fleet spec vehicles that get used hard and put away wet.

You might get luck and find some inspector's truck that did nothing but drive on pavement, or it might be some field staff's truck that was towing shit up and down mountains or going down dogshit dirt roads. Expect to replace the suspension on any GSA auction truck.
>>
>>28785625
GMT800. You could get 5 of them for $15-25k. Get a half ton and take your chances with the 4L60 or go with a 2500 and have a Godly 6.0/4L80E/full floating rear combo and 12mpg.

In the North American market in the present era. I have no idea why you posted that truck but whatever. They made a billion 800's and the gassers are still reasonably priced as long as you avoid the diesels.
>>
>>28786441
Just bought a '96 GMT800 for $900.
120k miles, zero leaks, no dents or rust.
Has clearcoat peel on hood and roof i need to address.
Needs a headliner and had to fix some headlight wiring along with multi-function switch (stalk on steering column).
Needed 2 tires.

Thats about it.

as an owner of two regular cabs I really do not get their point. Space cabs with either rear jump seats, or even just parcel room behind the front seats make a lot more sense if I need or wish to carry tools and such around. With a true regular cab, I need to either have a toolbox loose in the tray, or I need to have one of those hard mounted boxes that take up space in said tray.

There’s always been luxury and stripper truck variants even way the fuck back in the 60s. The existence of one never impacted the other. The “proportions” have nothing to do with that and tradies still largely use trucks.

I’m tired of zoomer’s retarded revisionist history.

The blue & white is a '66.
This is the '67-'72 body style.
Both trucks have the same chassis.
The parts have the same physical dimensions. You can bolt a '74 fender onto a '64 and it will line up with the cowl, grill and hood (will look a little funny).
>>
>>28787029
I’d give my left nut for a crew cab Highboy, I like my regular cab but more space inside is always better.
>>
>>28787029

>>
>>28787029
The problem is that you never see truck beds that are long like this anymore. They're all that sad pathetic little bath tub that can't fit much inside. If I was in the market for a truck I'd just be looking for older ones without this problem, but it's still a problem worth noting.
>>
>>28787031
Regular cabs suck with the tank behind the seat. But I refuse to do a frame mount on either because the protection value outweighs the added storage space.

Guy in town has a '76 extra cab thats nearly mint but he wont sell.

also 90s fords were pretty gud. Find an i6 300 250 or 150. Even better if manual. Enjoy everything disintegrating around the indestructible engine @14mpg

God damn im so fucking tired of the 300 meme.
I love my Fords.
Ive had 300s.
Ive killed 300s.
Ive ripped out 300s to swap in 351s.

300 is a tractor engine.
You can get the same mileage out of any pushrod V8- but with better performamce across the entire powerband.
Plus aftermarket components are plentiful with V8s instead of the unobtanium that the 300s have become.

Find a truck with a 300?
Cool. Run it.
When it needs major work, scrap that boat anchor for 5 cents a pound and rop in a decent powerplant.
>>
>>28787555
maybe they're becoming rarer then. Parts were never that plentiful especially intake, thottle stuff since it changed a few times. they don't fit the boomer v8 meme so they used to be much cheaper. there's a small following of people boosting them which isn't helping the availability. how did you kill a 300? I got one that was probably had 1/2" of sludge in under the valve covers, tappet cover, and in the oil pan from the previous owner. I've overheated it twice and over revved it a few times because i'm a dumbass. It still just chugs along fine.

Honestly a 2002-2008 silverado is probably the sweet spot for cost, power/mpg, reliability, and parts these day. people shit on the 4l60e but people abuse the shit out of trucks and i've read towing even a short distance without them in tow mode will wreck them which is where I assume a lot of the issues come from in trucks. 90s trucks are becoming garage queens like 80s trucks, unfortunately.

>>
>>28788618
6.2 is a joke compared to the current pushrods.
>>
>>28785833
They have low miles but famously high hours. Feds don't give a fuck about anything and will leave a vehicle idling till it runs out of gas.
>>
>>28788629
How so, especially while fitting a $25k budget?
>>
>>28787869
Sure or you could put the same into a 4L80 and have something indestructible that can handle 1000+hp vs just a beefed up 4L60. OP didn't mention anything about towing but if he is then he shouldn't bother towing with a 1500 800. It's just too risky imo plus the 4.8/5.3 are pretty gutless when it comes to towing.

>zoomer
it's Australians. notice his use of the word 'tradie', a distinctly Australian slang word for a blue collar laborer. I am thoroughly convinced the majority of "trugg" shitposts on this board are Australians.
They have been absolutely BOILING ever since their precious Utes died, and have gotten it in their heads that "Americans and their pickups are to blame" causing them to lash out in anger.
>>
>>28787363
small trucks never were. the nasty little secret is how back in the day the compacts were seen as primarily lifestyle vehicles. Marketed as weekend toys and mostly bought by suburbanites and teenagers as a way to haul their buddies to the beach. If you wanted to actually work, you'd get a fullsize.
modern glazing of them is pure rose-tinted glasses from people who have a vague cultural memory of minitrucks being "cool" but can't remember why, so project what they wanted them to be.

We could easily haul pallets for the bonfire and 150 quart coolers.
2 dirt bikes are about the 500 pound payload.
Muddy dogs in the back after a day at the lake.

I have a feeling you're some basement dwelling zoomie that missed the whole minitruck phase and are talking out your ass.

Motors are electric anon. 4.6 is very reliable, it won't be quick but then trucks aren't meant to be quick.
>>
>>28789653
yes, I did indeed say they were lifestyle vehicles rather than work vehicles. You're agreeing with me whilst being obstinate and insulting me; strange.
>>
>>28789845
A "lifestyle vehicle" is someone who drives a car just to....drive that type of car.
Like the boomer who had a midlife crisis and bought a corvette with the matching jacket and has the "corvette parking only" sign on his garage door.

Having a utilitarian truck that you use constantly is very different. None of my friends woth Toyota trucks had posters of Toyota trucks in their garage.
None of my friends with Rangers had a Ranger tattoo.

Your entire perspective is that of someone who is confused by people doing anything outdoors. Apparently "work" only counts if youre getting paid to do it.
Hauling is hauling.
Mini trucks were great because we had transportation AND payload capability.
Ill bet youre the same faggot that says people dont NEED a fullsize because Javier runs his lawn maintenance company with a hilux.
>>
>>28789869
Chang, Toyota has the biggest cult of them all.
>>
>>28789986

>>
>>28789869
hauling 60lb of scrap wood and a kegerator is not 'work', it is definitionally a lifestyle thing. and is something a regular car could easily do. reminder that even a Honda Civic has a payload capacity of like 500 pounds, and thoae minitrucks were quarter-ton trucks which generally meant they had a <900lb payload capacity. they were effectively economy cars with a bed for fashion purposes. lifestyle vehicles.
you getting this emotional over it is proof you know I'm right and that you can't handle it being turned back on you.
