Is Captain Slow correct?
>>

I own a diesel car. I love it personally but if you're looking for fun, a diesel is not where you're going to have the most of it (although they can still be fun if tuned).
If you're looking for a torquey yet economical daily driver, a diesel's great. The motorway cruise really is unbeatable, and I get 1000km to a tank of fuel.

Peon mentality.
If fuel mileage affects your quality of life then you've failed somewhere.
>>
>>28793974
Fuel mileage affects most people's quality of life in basically everywhere outside of the US. I'm really happy that you can benignly live your silver spoon life away but the vast majority of adults out there are living real lives where things like fuel economy do matter to their day to day.
>>

>>28793798
Yes.
Diesels are not good for driving satisfaction. That's not to say they don't have other positive qualities and use cases, but they are objectively less satisfying to DRIVE when you're doing it for the sake of driving.

Diesel p2p beats petrol. Even a small low power diesel engine pulls harder than an equivalent petrol engine.
I routinely destroy supposed "performance" cars who wanna race between the lights with my diesel.

>Diesel p2p beats petrol. Even a small low power diesel engine pulls harder than an equivalent petrol engine.
No it doesn't. A Golf GTI shits all over a GTD.
There was a brief window in the late 2000s-early 10s where some diesels were more powerful than their equivalent petrol cars but that hasn't been the case for 10 years. A 340i will pull away from a 335d at almost any speed.

Yeah, also being a brit he should have knowledge of the OM606.

Diesels never quite got a fair chance and until the emissions jew goes away, they never will.

Honorable mention to that V12 diesel Audi ran at the 24 hours of LeMans that won because the maximum allowable fuel tank size was the same regardless of fuel, and then they beat everybody on fuel stops. And were still really competitive on the track. Fuck you FIM for nerfing diesels after that.

i have an idea. anyone who has a problem with emissions has to spend x amount of time in a closed space with a running car. if you make it out after that time, you can completely rewrite the emissions rules for every country on the planet. otherwise, you can't.
>>
>>28794922
modern emissions rules*

"car" is short for carriage and "truck" is short for carriage truck, which is what you call a horse carriage with a load bed instead of a passenger compartment. anything with at least 4 wheels is in fact a "car" regardless of its size or use.
>>
>>28794922
>>28794923
Hi yes I have a problem with modern emissions rules
Why are the regulators retarded?
Can't use European standards in the US because "oh it puts out too much NOx" but if the car gets ten mpre miles per gallon then it puts out less emissions overall even if this one number you care about is larger than you'd like
Honestly they'd save billions of dollars across many nations if we could just agree that anything that meets a first world standard (US FMVSS, Euro NCAP, Japanese whatever system they use) is substantially similar enough to each other to be sold without changes other than LHD/RHD related ones.
>>
>>28795341
They don't want to save money. Saving money isn't the goal. Half of these emissions rules act as protectionism rackets. They want to make rules such that their local car companies do well in their market and other car companies have to struggle to get in.
>>
>>28794101

>>
>>28795341
Lemme fill you in real quick:
Emissions and safety regs from the government side are a means of control and forcing the public to buy new thing to keep line going up. Emissions and safety regs from the automaker side are actually actively lobbied for by major players in the automotive industry because it makes it impossible to compete with them since they have the size and infrastructure already developed to send off 20 cars for crash testing and spend tens of thousands of man hours making them meet emissions specs. Emissions regs have little to do with what makes sense, what saves money, or what saves penguins and coral.

I was looking at a 370z for my next car and wondered if they had a GPF in the euro 6 models (tax is 3x more on the older models).
It turns out they didn't because particulate emissions on old-fashioned port-injected engines are so low they can pass euro 6 regs without it.

Unusual German-registered Robin Reliant. Could be driven on a motorcycle licence too. Is one og the 'A' catagories both motorcyclists and car drivers get. Fiberglass.
>>
>>28794006
fuel economy literally is meaningless. It's already priced into the value of the car. You can buy an old v8 gas guzzler and it'll be cheaper because of that. Until you start driving over ~200,000 miles that additional cost of fuel is generally offset by the cheaper price / higher depreciation vs newer engines.
It's only an issue for people buying new cars, and people buying new cars are rich enough for it not to matter (or they're retards and deserve it).
>>
>>28793798
Seems right to me. Anytime people talk about their car being diesel, it's always about "i get great mpg on the highway!" or some other variation on fuel efficiency.

He’s right. It’s a money saving option that doesn’t really save you much money. They’re owned by the sort of people who like to think they have somehow beat the system by saving a bit per month on fuel costs, but actually have something that is more expensive to run and worse to drive in every way

Diesels were great when the fuel was cheaper, but then the fucking government mandated “ultra low sulphuric diesel fuel” and shitty DEF fluid, and now filling up a diesel is twice as expensive as filling up a gasoline tank of the same size.

>>
>>28793798
Old diesel good new diesel bad.

I'm not even doing some kind of old man impersonation. Diesel before Euro4 - will munch on everything. Old engine oil is good enough for it. They were not dynamic, they often didn't even have any kind of turbo or compressors or anything. You pushed the accelerator pedal and waited, and waited, and waited. But this fucking thing would last forever while being abused. Start from 3rd gear and just move, it doesn't give a fuck. Forget to change engine oil once or twice it doesn't give a fuck.

Meanwhile modern diesel - a fart sets off DPF check, any fuel economy goes out of the window because of ad blue, don't even dare mixing anything into the fuel. Yes it has turbos and compressors and it'll be more dynamic but you can have them in gasoline engine too.
>>
He is absolutely right. All diesel engine cars are the same and they feel terrible to drive and even worse to listen to.
There's a reason why you were made fun of if you rolled up to a car meet with a diesel engine before the 2000s, they're boring engines for your grandpa's tractor and mom's grocery getter.
