hypercars are the peak of automotive design imo
They're just racecars man. Built to fit in a box and set of rules. Racecars are my favorite cars but I am not sure if the hypercar ruleset is my favorite. The bop nonsense in this class is pretty gay.
>>28796684>only usable in an area specifically designed for themYeah, "peak"
>>28796684I soured on the BoP cuckholdry when it became self-evident that it was less about fairness and really just fixing races.
>Orecas in drag because bespoke designs are too expensiveIts just one-make racing in drag. FIA Gruppe 4, Gruppe C, ACO LMP900, and ACO LMP1 had more freedom.
>>28796684Big true!Crazy good feels knowing my kids will have access to used hypercars for like $30k when they become of age
>>28796771Oreca isn’t the only chassis builder so the cars aren’t the same at all. There are like 4 chassis builders. Even then, the chassis design being “bespoke” or not isn’t what gives manufacturers freedom. The regulations still limit greatly what you can do even with your own bespoke design. Manufacturers had less freedom back when VAG heavily lobbied for the regulations that made diesels the only viable option in the 2000s. They also had less freedom back when the FIA was forcing F1 down everyone’s throats making them turn to GT1 as a loophole in the 90s.Things are much better now than they’ve mostly ever been.
>>28796757I don’t mind BoP but ACO is corrupt as fuck. The 973 is one of the best cars ever made but isn’t allowed to win in WEC. The Ferrari is also excellent but come on. Also BoP isn’t going to save a bad car like the Lamborghini. Shame they dropped out but VAG is in trouble.https://youtu.be/oF81RPy4tT8?si=3yH81fDySAK7KCAYACO needs to invite the IMSA bop team because there is a serious risk that hypercar will be dead after this year if LMDH is not competitive in WEC
>>28796920>there is a serious risk that hypercar will be dead after this yearNah. McLaren, Ford, and Hyundai are confirmed to be joining next year and a few more manufacturers waffling about joining. Still about 3 years left at least. I doubt enough manufacturers would quit like Porsche did soon enough for WEC to be in any real danger again. Also, just because IMSA might have better BoP tables, they're still far from perfect. They also benefit from not having an ACO-like organization just making up their own BoP table just because.
>>28797027It’s a joke that Ferrari got less weight and more power going in to Le Mans this past year. Made ZERO sense from a spectator view as they have been dominant and were dominant leading into the race. Porsche can afford the few million to run the cars in WEC, they pulled out as a political move. BMW has been seething at ACO since the M8 was not given a chance and I think if LMDH is again rendered uncompetitive we’re going to see more pull out. Porsche will do Le Mans but they won’t do WEC full season. And ACO is currently hoping Porsche will pay for Proton to run a second car full season and so qualify for the 963 to run Le Mans. We will see who blinks. It’s only like 500k euro entry fee or something plus gas and parts that proton may need on top. That’s nothing. Porsche is playing politics and nearly all of the LMDh manufactures are feeling the same. We will see. I hope the ACO just figures it out and it’s all been a mistake but BMW has suggested it’s all corrupt politics over the years. Bop works in GT3 it can work in LMH.
>>28796684>hypercars are the peak of automotive design imoNo, I'm not buying that. For me small lightweight cars are peak auto design. Smaller and lighter is better.
>>28797074Then you should be posting a go-kart.
>>28797093Unironically much closer to peak automotive design than the pos he posted lmao
>>28796684peak automotive design is going 300k miles and still barely broken in
>>28796684hypercars are ugly and don't hold a candle to 2000s open top prototypes
>>28796684>>28797074and the reason is the same.form follows function.if this is the case, design wins everytime.
>>28797093>>28797108Go-karts are not automobiles.>>28797371I'd accept that as peakt. kei-car poster
>>28796760
>>287973861000lbs including driver, not a go kart. Kei cars are fat.
You are looking at peak performance.
>>28797561Personally I prefer the look of open cockpit prototypes. The can-ams were sex.
>>28797569
RBP
>>28797570
>>28797574Dat ass
>>28797575Just look at this car. Behold it.
>>28797569That's a fake Can Am car though, an F5000 car dressed up as something it's not. Should be called Trans Am
>>28797581
>>28797584
>>28796920imsa bop is just as shit but their fetish of putting out full course yellows every 20 minutes mask that pretty well
>>28797583F5000 cars fuck too
>>28796684Actual peak are shitboxes from the 90s & 00sThe mass manufactured, run on any fuel, go anywhere, get flooded, dry out, hit a curb, hit a sign, get rear ended, straighten it out with some pulleys, do 1 million miles, change oil twice, kind of shitboxes.
>>28797788those sorts of cars died in the 80s. by the 90s it was all cheap easily-broken plastic and computers.
>>28798887Lol, he's not talking about USDM cars, you silly billy you
>>28797590Yeah but when it comes to Can Am, accept only real Can Am
>>28798890please do post a foreign car designed in the 90s that doesn't have a cheap plastic components and ECUs, because picrel is a commonly named 'good 90s car' and wouldn't you know it it has both.
>>28796920>Lamborghinicosmic punishment for them not running a V10 or V12. they could've easily repurposed the Huracan GT3's drivetrain for it.
>>28798897Are you one of those guys that thinks that anything after steel levers and cable actuation was a mistake? Or are you just a snob that believes good design can only be found in expensive luxury goods?
>>28798907>90s cars were so durable and simple>no not those ones>s-so what if they were worse than what came before? they're still goodjust admit you're like 26 and you personally like 90s cars. don't try and assign some grand political/cultural value to it to try and justify your preferences. sick of zoomers doing this shit
>>28798903Would have been wiser in hindsight to use the multimatic with Porsche and drop the V10 in it
>>28798910I'm 30 and I think Japan was in an economic golden era wherein they invested heavily in the R&D behind their vehicles which gave them exceptional reliability and durability that built the entire brand off the back of which they sell middling crossovers for overinflated prices to normies today. And I'm serious, do you want to go back to bare steel on the interior of cars again? It's not better in any way. The presence of plastic in a vehicle does not inherently mean it's badly designed or of poor quality.
>>28797589LOL you know I hadn’t thought of it. I do think though that BoP should narrow the performance window without choosing winners. The Ferrari and Porsche are the best two cars of this formula and it’s that simple.
>>28798919that would be the 80s. the bubble popped in 1991 and it was a slow decline from there.>in ironically defending plastic in cars
>>28798920actually the Toyota is better than the Porsche but they get raped by the BOP to prop up Ferrari.
>>28798923>"the 80s">means the asset price bubble of 1986 to 1991Yeah so? The cars didn't magically turn to shit after the year 1991. They still benefitted from the investment during that economic boom. They were still good, it was only in the 00s that they started noticeably declining in quality. And yes, plastic has its place especially in non-structural pieces like dashboard and for things like switches and controls.
>>28798934and the 80s cars I was referring to generally weren't developed in the 80s either, they were mostly holdovers from the 70s. for the record, bubble economy cars is when the 'plastic + computers' thing started. there's a reason why you don't see those cars on the road anymore.
>>28798936>there's a reason why you don't see those cars on the road anymoreBecause they're 35 year old commuter cars that no one found very desirable even when new?Couldn't you reasonably say the same thing about a 1980s Impala?
>>28798941I would wager 80s Impalas (designed in the 70s, and therefore actually simple and easy to work on) fared better long-term than 90s Japanese cars. growing up I saw 70s-80s GM shitheaps everywhere but Japanese cars were never more than about a decade old. of course now all the 70s and 80s cars are gone too but my point stands.
>>28798944Maybe, but I would say it's the fixing it yourself part that made them live longer. The computers did make them somewhat more complex to fix but I don't think it was for the worst. I have a car and a motorcycle with a carburettor (or 4) and a manual choke, honestly I don't really mind the computer taking over that stuff when I'm just driving to get to work every morning.
>tfw 1500hp in 600kg
>>28798952the crux of discussion was "simple, durable, easy to repair". this ceased to be the case for cars after they transitioned from carburettors and metal to EFI and plastic. carburettors can be rebuilt in the middle of a jungle, fuel injectors can not. metal can be bent back into shape, plastic can not. You simply like 90s cars, and that's fine. I'm not telling you you can't. just don't invent bullshit outside justification for it when in the presence of someone who actually works on cars.
>>28798959every decade another hundred horsepower gets added to the figure
hmm its ok
>>28798960Not really, the thread is about design. The post you replied to first was saying that 90s shitboxes were peak design, and you disagreed because plastic and I said just cause it's plastic doesn't mean it's badly designed. After that we sort of pivoted and went into fixability.Honestly I don't really like 90s cars that much, I never really got into the whole JDM thing I'm more of a euro guy. I just sincerely believe what I'm saying is the truth. And sorry anon, I didn't know I was talking to an actual mechanic. I'll watch out next time.
>>28799026 why lie about things so easily disproven just by going back in the thread >>28797788
>>28798980And another 100 kilos. Fuck that.
>>28799118weight limit back then was 550kg or so, and most of the cars save for the absolute shitters were at or under that and ballasted up to the correct weight.
>>28799121I went and checked and it was lowered from 580 to 540 in 1983, and stayed there until 2004 when it was bumped up to 600. in 2013 it was raised to 640, to 730 in 2017, and 800 in 2022.
I miss the sound and smell of a racetrack. I can't wait for racing season to start.
I like that they made Prototypes and WEC more popular but I wish the regulators wouldn't fellate the big car manufacturers so much. The cars are basically lmp2s, let teams run their old Orecas, let small teams build their own shit, like they did in group c. Just set a maximum delta from the front runners and have bop balance out the rest.
>>28798903Aston ran a V12 and they couldn't compete
>>28796684Get back to me when your hypercar can make a shopping run with a piano in the trunk.
Ultima GTR (available in kit form for DIY enthusiasts)
>>28799254because their car is built to the original 2021 proposal of modified road cars rather than thoroughbred sports prototypes. they are significantly down on downforce and their weight balance is fucked because of it. they had to forego a hybrid system both for weight considerations and because the design of the chassis genuinely doesn't permit it. the engine is the most competitive part of the car which is why they have good trap speeds.
>>28799277In a multitude of colours.
>>28799277>>28799280>Ferrari F40 that actually works
>>28798924Let’s see it in IMSA THEN FAGGOT https://youtu.be/V_7sZ00cAmE?si=cEqpFFDUYfT8x0KB
https://youtube.com/shorts/tw4VfI8vO-I?si=JAazlygIfphV4RJ-ACO needs to fix the BoP and save hypercar. I have zero faith. I’m worried what’s next is GT3+ being top class.
>>28799650Silhouette cars again could be neat
>>28799536IMSA forbids works teams, and most of the LMH manufacturers refuse to sell customer cars. the only exception being the Aston, which is in IMSA as a result.
>>28799650LMH is on life support but LMDh is doing fine. if the Ferrari, Toyota, and Peugeot fuck off then you'd see an explosion of teams buying Caddys and Porsches.
bump
>>28799969>IMSA forbids works teamsNo they don't. The only fully privateer efforts in GTP are the JDC-Miller and Proton 963s, while Cadillac/Whelen/WTR, BMW RLL, Acura MSR. and Porsche Penske are direct works teams, while Aston Martin THOR and Lamborghini are factory affiliated. >most of the LMH manufacturers refuse to sell customer carsLMH is more expensive to run than LMDh is, not a surprise. AF Corse only has a 3rd car because of pay drivers.>the only exception being the Aston, which is in IMSA as a result.the Valkyrie LMH was done on THOR's dime with assistance from Aston Martin
Need to get sport car general going In here doing racing season. Anyway we all agree this is the biggest piece of shit GT3 ever made right? >heavy >engine mounted high as fuck >built into chassis so they can’t fix it quickly when something breaks >so heavily modified from the real RCF it’s almost meaningless but still sucks because the RCF is such a bad starting point >’w-we made it for japsneee racing’
>>28796684No. Hypercars are engineered in the same realm as airplanes, where aerodynamics and actual performance takes precedence over nearly all other considerations. Cars are that mix of (to use caddilacs name for it) art and science, but at a certain point you can't break into the class at all without throwing art to the wayside in search of the most correct and most stable solution
>>28803918I suppose that's why they've made the new one a blank sheet race car
>>28803918>Need to get sport car general going In here doing racing season.Go to >>>/sp/. You will never have real motorsports discussion here. Just maybe meme threads during Le Mans season.
