my current beetle only has the 2.5L gasoline engine but i don't want some *truly* gay shit like the turbo model when i upgrade. i just have an affinity for diesel engines and the fuel economy seems nice.

You looking at a 1.9 or the 2.0?Typical issues are turbo failure at high mileage, clutch and DMF failure if manual, and the 2.0s have a Bosch CP4 injection pump which is infamously expensive when it fails, so good quality diesel and a diesel additive are a good idea. I would recommend EGR delete + oil catch can as soon as you get it. Also DPF delete if fitted. This will also typically require a tune.

>>28797688the 2.0 tsi from the 2014+ beetle turbo is the legendary EA888 gen 3 which is an upgrade in every way over the 2.5. Reliable and highly tuneable. The previous gen turbo engines are notorious for timing chain tensioners and turbos going out however. I also have an affinity for diesel beetles as I learned to drive manual in an early one from 2003.
