Jannies nuked my thread before i got the car home. Just saved a 1972 Pontiac Catalina 4 door sedan from a barn.
Loaded up in Arkansas to bring to Houston..
Last inspected in 1988.
Even have this gem, and the original service manuals. Just need to find a 1972 Pontiac Shop Manual and a Fisher Body manual to round off the collectibles.
>>28797739Fuckin catalina wine mixer
Solid basic, purely mechanical car. Good compression. Going to see if it will fire up this weekend. Then rebuild the carb, water pump, brakes, and shocks and shell be on the road.
>>28797739Nice find, OP. A solid candidate for a hypermiling project maybe? lol>>28797743>>28797741Ain't no way this is from a barn that looks way too clean
damn son excellent score
>>28797746Average anon here is too young
now that's a proper AUTOMOBILE man why can't cars be beautiful like this anymore
>>28797739Hell yeah \m/ Nice find dude.
70s land yachts are so awesome nice buy. Cruising around on a big lazy sofa.
Looks pretty cool
>>28797755Supposedly was in a barn under a cover since early 90s. D W Walker bought it brand new, let his son and daughter use it for highschool in the 70s. The son kept it, but parked it in early 90s when he got a newer car. He died in 2020, family sold his barn stash to s church friend in 2023, he gave it a bath, removed carpet and mice nests, then got intimidated by the points ignition and old carb. He then kept it under the same cover until he posted it in November. So technically i didnt personally pull it from the barn, but its spent its whole life in comfy Hector Arkansas.
Any under the hood pics? I love seeing an engine bay the size of an apartment with nothing but a v8 and a battery
show the extent of the rust situation if there is any. it looks a bit crusty in that wheel well...
>>28797739nobody cares about old people fag cars like these. Only other homosexuals like you OP
>>28797899I love it. And its value will skyrocket once you faggots realize all new cars will be monitoring, judging,l and reporting you to insurance as it sees fit. If you keep anything 1975+, youll be shutdown by cops mobile EMPs. Ive always loved these old ugly tanks.
>>28797808Ill get some. Been getting home almost sundown everyday, but ill post some this evening. >>28797837Will do. Its really not too bad all things considered. But rear quarter lower portion is crunchy, portion of the trunk, and small spot on the Dutchman but looks salvageable. Frame rails are solid all the way.
>>28797912>Ill get some. Been getting home almost sundown everyday, but ill post some this evening.bump
>>28797739Amazing. A friend of mine had a '76, with the cockpit surround dashboard, and took me around rather a lot in it. He also drove a '72 Electra. and joked that that while the Catalina had about the same displacement, it weighed about a ton less.
>>28797915Its night, ive done a compression test, so i removed the plugs and wires. Air cleaner is in the garage.
>>28797837Little hole in a shitty spot, but i can get to it. Hopefully the window track isnt fubar'd.
Heres the quarter panel.
>>28797957Heres this one. Needs a good polish. Amazing how well the dash has held up. Still dried out, but not cooked by the sun.

rate my daily i take her to work 2008 fg ford falcon with a territory lift kit rear and RTV Ute Front Shocks/Springsi can go even higher but im limited by the stock CV's rear and geometry of the suspention at the front
>>28798066I have heard rumors that they shipped cars back then with no paint no undercoating on the frame. Is that really true? Looks like it here.
>>28798104Certainly minimal. Body itself is painted. Frame rails werent. They actually got protected by the leaky engines believe it or not.
Driver rear underbody.
Gas tank is fucked.
>>28797739>Derby CarYou better fucking not>>28797899Hello its me, homosexual
>>28798150Definitely wont. Old dude walking his dog asked "you do derby" said hell no, thats the main reason these are gone. Just used that because these 4drs used to be the requirement.
Body tag still intact.
Cool old license plate.
>>28797739>>28797741did they pay you to take it or something? did you owe them a favor?that thing is totally beat to shit, you'd have to pay me a grand to trailer to another state
>>28798165You just dont get it, never will.
>>28798165You're just not a true hooptie appreciatorhttps://youtu.be/UIPr4UyiZGEhttps://youtube.com/shorts/BtHmaL68zUw
>>28798165>REAL car enthusiasts only buy brand new BMWs straight from the dealer
>>28798165niggerfaggot detected
>>28797739Wonderful anonAs time goes on I appreciate the 4 doors more. Got myself a lincoln versailles from a similar situation recently. No rust, perfect interior, good-enough paint, 70k miles. Almost ready to go on the road, it'll be my daily.Tip for both of us, get the windows tinted. 70% VLT is enough to block the uv/ir without looking ethnic.
>>28798153I remember buying a fox tbird and hearing the little shit I was buying it from say he considered using it as a derby car and I just told the kid to his face that it's a compact and that it'd fold in on him and more or less that he'd probably lose a leg and deserve it.
>>28798054a lot of leaves and/or nesting material was in that engine bay.
>>28798165Humongous levels of faggotry behind this post
>>28798153Thank you anon, it warms the heart knowing one of these old girls gets to roam the roads again unmolested. That said, if you give her a subwoofer or two I'd still approve...>>28798564My crown victoria has the 302 so sometimes I call it my crew cab mustang
>>28798159Fuck yeah OPKeep the Pontiac express going
>>28797739love it man. my favourite type of car. wish stuff like this was more commonly available in the uk
>>28798120The B-series cruiser gas tanks are always fucked. Those big angled pinch welds hold mud like a motherfucker and rot out. Replacement could be an issue. A cross-reference MIGHT be a mid 70s chevy caprice.
>>28797739Mexicans will find it, chop it, low ride it.Hope you got it insured
>>28797739Awesome ride, awesome save. Glad you're saving one more of these goated things.I love landyachts but I'm a yuropoor so it's real hard to get them (and keep them fed, fuck).
i want a land barge so bad bros
>>28799102yeah hats off to the yuros that keep the mopars over there running, what with all the taxes on top of taxes you guys pay there. dailying would definitely be a challenge if you didn't have private parking because these cars are usually so long. width usually isn't as bad.
>>28799069I got insurance bro.
>>28799061I think this one failed from the inside, it started leaking more once on the trailer and the sludge was pushed back from driving. Your point is still valid, just judging by the lack of build up everywhere else. Highly doubtful anyone cleaned the underside, its rather dry in that part of Arkansas,
>>28799110Dew it
>>28798072that dashboard is greatI have a number of 70s barges too, and with a car like that in the condition that its in, i would suggest that you get ontop of preventative maintenance asap. I have a Chrysler in the exact same sort of beige-fawn colour and i love it, its a colour that needs to make a comeback. To be on top of things, i would spend a weekend scrubbing the chassis and underbody with a wirewheel and brushing on/shooting some deadener/underbody up there for weather proofing and sound suppression. Cut some marine carpet and make a dashmat to help the dashboard to not crack next summer, sanding and varnishing the steering wheel to maintain a nice colour/sun bleaching and throw down some seat covers and get some felt rolls and carpet to make the interior feel nicer, keep it insulated, keep the noise down etc. As for the body like the guards that are already breached i would spray some rust converter in there and keep the area clean (if you cant do welding) just to maintain that thats as bad as the rust gets, and likewise for around the windscreen where chips are turning into corrosion. Just keep it neutralised and apply some touchup paint to keep the rust at bay.In between all this yes, change your fluids, inspect your suspension, brakes etc and enjoy years of reliable motoring out of what are the simplest and happiest engines put into a car (mass produced lazy pushrod v8's) and your cars in great survivor condition now, but you want to focus on preserving it as it is to keep it like it is now. These cars in not shitty but not showroom quality (daily driver/survivor cars) with their problems sorted and under control are getting rarer and rarer as the gap between restored and unrestored heaps grows larger and larger year by year. Good luck, love it
>>28799972Im not sure what undercoating to use. I lije the idea of the lanolin based coatings, if i could, i would love to use CARC or something similarly hardcore. We used that at Stewart and Stevenson doing the LMTVs and stuff. Shit is definitely hardcore, and can be brushed/rolled with minimal surface prep. I was really hoping to het by with just a couple refreshing parts, but i need to do the timing gears, and its not a whole lot more to just rip the engine out, get minor machine work like cylinder honing and a crank polish and new cam bearings. I have it in my head to teach all 4 if my daughters how to drive in this. Reliability and durability and drivability are the focus. Should i go ahead and plan for a mild rebuild of the engine? Or try just the timing set, water pump and naybe intake seals? Car only has 73k miles on the clock, my main concern us spinning a bearing, i dont think they staked these at the factory at all.
>>28797739I had one of those. Green with 350. Missed more than any other. The happy place I go, when at the dentist or whatever.
Im so tempted to abandon the truck and just put this in the Catalina. But it defeats the whole purpose of getting it to begin with.
>>28801124Trucks are boring af. Put the best metal you have in the Catalina.
>>28801405My truck is a tool. You twat. But its having more issues come up, hit 300k miles before i rebuilt the engine completely, put it back in the truck and started priming the oil, that's when i realized i forgot the stupid barbell plug so i had to rip it back out. Already rebuilt the steering and suspension and brakes around 250k, according to records i got with the truck, original owner had transfer case and transmission replaced under an extended warranty from the dealer around 130k. Its got all the good options.
>>28801124LS swapped classics are ALWAYS gay as shit. These vintage engines have so much more character.
>>28802210if by character you mean "overheats on highway when it's warmer than 80 outside" and "barely scrapes together 20 hp if anywhere in the state of Colorado", then yes, they have all the character in the world.
>>28802210>have so much more character>mechanical fuel pump>Boomer carburetor>heavy shityou could be going fast but nah, you are just another poser
>>28802318I mean you don't need to do an LS swap to get away from those things.I'm putting a 302 in my car with EFI and aluminum heads.
>>28798054Looks breddy good overall
>>28802313New water pump, new radiator, better fan and clutch, will idle all day in Houston summer. Timing gears, true dual exhaust, ill be around 200hp and over 300tq. Im not looking for a hotrod. The LS swap is a money pit in itself. Just the driveshaft, custom motor mounts and transmission cross member would cost more than i bought the car for. Plus its just dumb and overdone. I was just throwing the LS out there for conversation, and because im still working on it.
>>28802318The entire point of this car, to me, is because its so purely mechanical. No electronics, sensors or computers. Can literally not be stopped by the new emp shit some cops have. Can easily put blades on the rear end to prevent the grappler thing too.
>>28802571>Can literally not be stopped by the new emp shit some cops have>literally believes Fast Furious shit is real LEL>maybe a Fallout larperconfirmed the 70s car posters on this board are stupid ass Boomers. This is not how DC electrical systems work. You would be respectable if you just said you were poor and too stupid to afford a complicated swap like that.
>>28802612The tech is already here and being refined more. No, not widely implemented by law enforcement, but is by the military. AC vs DC doesnt matter dingleberry. I am a little on the poor side, but not really, just got 4 children and a wife, house, dogs, chickens, snakes, oh yeah, 3 of the 4 are in private school, the 4th starts in 2027. So not poor, but am on a budget. And i would do that 8.1 vortec in the 2500 suburbans instead of a traditional LS. I have been seeing those for pretty cheap.
>>28797899T. zoomer. Or are you a fucking Generation Aspie?
>>28802678>>28802571Fucking moron, what are you going to do, run from the cops in your 5000lb 200hp car after the EMP doesn't work on it?It's a cool car, but that's a terrible reason.
>>28802713That makes me miss GTA4 and the backfiring shitboxes...Honestly, i just really like it being purely mechanical. EMP stuff is just jokes, get your panties unwadded. Fucking LS homo.
>>28802678>I am a little on the poor side>just got 4 children and a wife, house, dogs, chickens, snakes, oh yeah, 3 of the 4 are in private school, the 4th starts in 2027>So not poorYou think?
>>28803351Not poor, but stretched thin. I do side work to fund my stupid endeavors. So it all works out.
>>28802313>overheats on highway when it's warmer than 80 outsidekek that's mine. cools down off the highway though, so definitely needs a new radiator, or a re-core at least.
Picking up the gas tank, straps and sending unit this weekend. Had some promising ignition sputtering, ordered a carb rebuild kit, new points and condenser, plugs and wires.
>>28806053Get a set of #1 guitar strings for that rebuildThe idle passages will mess with you and will evade all non-mechanical removal techniques
>>28806112Ive got some pieces I used for the KLRs carb rebuild. What the fuck is CC2 cloth?
>>28806053You get a reproduction tank, or did you find a decent used one? Also a heads up - new points/ignition parts and carb rebuild gets kinda suck anymore. The quality just isn't there. If you're gonna stick with them, I'd definitely keep your eyes open at any swap meets, for points sets/rotors and carb kits that someone bought 50 years ago and not their kid is cleaning out the garage. Most of those parts are literally better than anything from vatozone.
