Why aren't cars this beautiful anymore?

is it the lust for agressive styling from consumers that's ruining the purity of design or is it safety regulations ie pedestrian safety that's making everything look mid, or downright ugly
>>

>mid
you're being generous.
>>
>weight doesn't matter to your communist overlords so it always goes up
>therefore horsepower line MUST go up (otherwise performance will drop due to weight and people won't buy new cars)
>this causes a need for more cooling

There's a theory on this that beauty has been achieved and perfected already. Car design can no longer be furthered in pursuit of beauty, now it's all about creating visual "noise" and disruption to stand out in a sea of homogenised and ovverregulated eggshit. Positive reactions to design aren't important, what's needed is that people need to react, to remember the car and the brand.
BMW have led this approach in the last 15 years.

The lead designer for the DB7, Ian Callum, hasn't worked for a major OEM since leaving Jag several years ago.
He's a serious minimalist, he designed cars with a philosophy that perfection isn't when nothing more can be added, it's when nothing more can be taken away.
In most Ian Callum cars there's very few superfluous lines and they all look functional or natural even if they aren't, almost like it's still in a wind tunnel and it's vapour trails running down the car.

Turn the saturation down to 0 and it looks kinda baller but then it would run the drag queens over and explode the battery pack to cremate them.

Had this discussion recently on the newer Aston's and the last decent looking one was the DB11 in my opinion, although the interior was shite. Just the yuge grills are so off putting. The new Vantage looks too busy and adding as much sporty design features just over styling the front. DB12 is goping grill plus DB11 rear. Tye new Vanquish I actually like. But is it stunning like a Gen 1 Vanquish, it isn't.

>>28798395
Though this F-type has had a minor facelift. Few small changes to the intakes on the front bumper and the headlights changed here, as these went onto the roads after april 2017.

I was thinking this about the new Ferraris and I think it has to do with the disappearance of car designers in general. Accountants push for things that sell (SUVs and crossovers) which is why a lot of stuff today is so bland and boring. Coachbuilders also disappeared, Michelotti, Scaglietti, Zagato, Vignale, and the people behind them as well. Back in the day manufacturers would actually consider design houses for their models but today it would probably be deemed a waste of money. Still, anytime something retro inspired is made these days it looks super uncanny.

>I was thinking this about the new Ferraris and I think it has to do with the disappearance of car designers in general
I disagree with the specific example of Ferrari, they're trying to build a coherent design language even if it's not very successful. If you look at the SF90 and 812 they're variations on the 458 and F12 theme with added rice.
The new cars are more retro than the previous generation. The 12 Cilindri is a cleaner design than the 812 and looks more like a classic GT car. I don't think it works very well, the side profile is lovely but the black panelling at the back and the Mario moustache look shit.
The new Testarossa has the proportions of a 60s Le Mans car. The 296 launch colour, red with blue stripes/accents, was inspired by the 60s racing team.

I don't think it works very well, but they've clearly gone for a more classic design language with the new cars.

>I don't think it works very well, but they've clearly gone for a more classic design language with the new cars.
No, I agree 100 percent with that, even Ford with the Bronco or the new Dodge Charger, they are all inspired in some way by the old designs, but the retro styling is so uncanny. Other examples are the Alfa Romeo 33 stradale concept or the de tomaso p72 concept. They try so hard to go for that 60s bulging fenders design but they just come out looking so bad. Compare that to actual 60s cars like a db4 zagato and the 250 gt SWB. It has a lot to do with the stupid LED lights they are obligated to put on their cars and the stupid 22+ inch wheels. Everything has to appeal to tasteless chinks.
>>
>>28798759
to add to this, I think the Bronco is not a bad design. The only worthy retro design is the new Stratos imo.
>>
>>28798759

Because bodywork used to be of no consequence practically. As long as it fit around the fixtures and you could throw it on a ladder frame it didn't matter in the slightest how vain or indulgent you were.

Now that it's actually expected to do a job, it has to prioritize being effective at it.
>>
>>28798392
I will say, that the specific color pink they used being a chroma-inversion of their classic racing green was somewhat clever.
I certainly wouldn't buy it though, and it was handled horribly.

The DB12 is a massive downgrade from the DB11. The DB11 is beautiful. The DBS was beautiful too, and while I like the Vanquish well enough I think the DBS is the aesthetically superior car. The facelifted Vantage doesn't look as good as the pre-facelift Vantage, either, for that matter.

Aston's just on a downswing right now, the entire previous generation was better. It also had MULTIPLE cars with V12s, as opposed to only one now.

Modern cars don't really need that much grill for cooling. There's plenty of modern cars with blanked off grills and intakes with plastic covers for better aero.
The unoriginal designers at Aston are just desperate to remind people of the last time they built a half decent car.

>Why aren't cars this beautiful anymore?

1. Regulations, especially pedestrian impact ones which require all cars to have big bulbous noses now
2. Chinese and Arabs who demand gigantic styled grills on high-end cars so people can all see that they're driving a BMW or Aston or whatever from a distance of 650 miles
3. Side-impact tests involve crashing a simulated SUV into the side of your car, meaning you need steel up to at least that height if the "occupant" is going to survive

That's about 95% of the problem

When the DB11 released, I felt like one of a very small minority that thought it was a stunning looking car. The major thing that put's me off it is the twin turbo's on the V12. I prefer the NA, far more character.
I will disagree with the DBS. It looks ok enough but I think the new Vanquish looks. The new Vantage I really don't like. The shark faced one I kinda liked in a weird way, loved the rear on it. Where the VH Vantage was fantastic. Then again the 2 previous Vantages to that looked great, especially the not a mustang.

Well, technically 2 with a V12 since Valkyrie exists. But yeah i'm with you. A lot of complaints on the DB12 being, apart from boring is way too boosty. Which is not how a GT should be. Apart from Valkyrie, only one I'd have is the new Vanquish in the current line up. And I don't exactly have £400,000+ for one! And for that price, I could get a 1980's Vantage with X-pack or a really nice DB6. What would you prefer to have.

>>28800608
It's not traditional jag but it's a nice, simple and coheisve design. All the body lines go somewhere and there's enough of a flare to the rear three quarters to give it some presence. Given that this was the fastest one they did besides the project 8 it could be more aggressive with some wider arches and a bit more going on at the rear but it's a good looking car IMO
>>
>>28798553
the damage is done
they lost sales of cars unrelated to the new design
>>
>>28801109
getting them fixed is the expensive part
