The fit went to the dealer today but they couldn't find anything wrong with the engine shy of doing a teardown. They couldn't find the source of the metal fragments. They pulled the valve cover and did another oil change and everything seemed fine.
They did note that someone else had definitely been into the valve cover (which I was) but also had removed the timing cover at some point (which I have not), because the liquid gasket was applied very wrongly. So it is most likely that, as the previous thread theorized, the car previously had an issue that was fixed but the oil pan was never dropped and cleaned out.
Blackstone oil sample should arrive tomorrow, then who knows how long till they get a measure of it.
Thanks for reading my blog

Did they find any more fragments attached to the drain plug?

Nope, nothing

mystery will remain unsolved. at least nothing is wrong with it.

Didn;t those have an issue with the key on the crank shearing? That looks like some of it sheared off and now you are on borrowed time. I hear the K20 fits.

It was pretty much determined to be the tappet on the bottom of the lost motion spring. The crank key is a rectangular bar, nothing of that turned up

Come summer I'm going to drop the pan, remove the timing cover, replace gaskets etc maybe I'll find something else while I'm in there. But it's good to know it should hold out till then just fine
