My car's wheels seem to vibrate significantly when going high speeds ~110km/h+. I get worried the wheels are going to fly off. I have driven significant distances and nothing has happened, though.Should I be concerned?
>>28816552LED headlights made night drives suck
>>28816552How come cars do not have air brakes?
>>28816601there are a couple things this could be1. you have bad tires. the best way to check would be to rotate your tires and see if the vibration moves in anyway. if it does you probably need new tires or need them to be balanced better. 2. if your rotors are warped they can drag intermittently on the retracted brake pad which can cause vibration. the vibration would get worse under light braking 3. it’s something in the suspension, or a wheel bearing, which would be far more difficult to diagnose properly
>>28816781air brakes are great when you can afford to put a heavy air compressor on your vehicle, but most cars aren’t able to whether for packaging or fuel efficiency reasons. you need such a large volume of air to generate the same pressure as a hydraulic systemtldr. hydraulics are faster and lighter, but less fault tolerant to leaks.
2013 Mercedes-Benz SL550 here. When running errands in it in prep for the winter storm I'm pretty sure I killed the starter battery, that and the cold, and I was feeling like the starter battery was on its way out. What it was giving me before was "choking, choking, choking" then it would start up, and it's now throwing me a CEL. However, I tried today to start it and it started up without incident, but the CEL is still flashing. Is it using another battery as a backup, it has three.
What's the best tint % that will still allow you to see at night? I was thinking 20% thoughts?
>>28818151Nevermind it's just the starter battery. It does this every fucking winter.
My city is salting the roads for the first time ever. Should I get an undercarriage wash after this winter storm?
>>28818232yes, you should. but wait until the roads get dry-ish. if theres still snow or slush on the roads theres no point
>>28818285Who do I go to, usually for that? I assume drive-through washes don't do it as well.
>>28818285Also, it hasn't snowed yet, but do they put the salt on before or after it snows? Because if they put it on today then my car is going to be sitting around until Monday with salt on it...
Keep hearing a loud clicking sound coming from the driver side of the engine bay. I can even hear it in the cabin. Any idea of what it could be? 2003 Corolla. It doesn't sound like usual VVTI engine noise
>>28818303>>28818313it varies. in Michigan they salt as they plow. most drive thru car washes have an underbody wash, its usually one of the options. if you care about taking it through a car wash you can find a touchless one in your area, but they can be hard to find. itll do well enough, but you can run it through 2 or 3 times to ensure most of it gets off if you’re worried.

I'm going to look at a 1988 Toyota corolla hatch in the next few days, its been engine swapped with a 4age silver top 4age and 6 speed manual. The add says it currently doesn't run as fuel pump is busted and he has a replacement but no time too many projects ect ect. Other than spraying starting fluid to see how the engine runs/starts any other ideas of what to look for?
>>28816601mine fronts start shaking at 70 too. i like going 5 under on the highway, the limit is 70, so its never really a problem but i dont like it. do you just drive around at the speed they shake at????? thats scary
What car should I get next? Looking at maybe a Cayman GT4, which is probably about as high as I would go for cost. Current car is a '03 911 Turbo with 600whp, previous cars were 92 Skyline GT-R and a turbo 07 Civic Si. Already have a family car, so not worried about two seats vs. four. Prefer a manual since it seems they will be harder and harder to get as the years go by.

I need a vehicle for my wife to drive for the next couple years that is easy to load and drive 3 young children around. So I was thinking of some shitty minivan or traverse until 2/3 of the kids are out of car seats and then getting something we actually want to drive for 10+ years.Would it make sense to just lease the minivan/traverse for the next few years and saving my down payment money for what we really want when the lease is up? By then I could probably buy a brand new truck or full size suv with cash. I feel like this would be the better move since I know for sure I'm not keeping the vehicle longer than a couple years anyways
>Supercharger fluid emptied and replacedUmmm... what?Do superchargers have a reservoir for lubrication?
>>28819487Yeah, the vast majority of superchargers have their own self contained oil, similar to your diff and trans.
Is a 3rd gen tacoma with the towing package adequate for frequent towing of a 4000 lbs gvwr travel trailer?
>>28819446You can crunch the numbers yourself and see what's better. With leasing you gotta give back the vehicle in pristine condition or they'll charge you for what it cost them to fix it back up. This means no dings or scratches anywhere, no stained seats or carpets, etc. up to you if you trust your wife and kids to keep the vehicle in tip top shape. Personally I'd buy a minivan to keep, it's more practical than a truck or SUV at the expense of not being "cool".
Time has come to sell my shitbox. Similar examples seem to be asking around 2.5-3k.It's got a few known issues that need attention. Most I can probably do myself and shouldn't be too expensive, but I'm wondering if it's worth the effort of trying to do it up for sale or I should just try sell it as is or sell it to a car dealer.Other issue is it's registered in another state, and I don't know what it would need done to pass a roadworthy. Last time I did one (on a much newer car) cost me 2k so there's a good chance I'll end up worse off for my effort - that being said the requirements seem to be less stringent than where I am now.I think I'm far more likely to find a seller if I do it up and pass a roadworthy but for the effort and how much it costs I might be better off just selling it to a dealer. Never done that before but I'm guessing I'd get 1-1.5k for it.>I'm an ausfag living in QLD formerly VIC btw idk if it matters

Reatard here, please help meI've never used winter tires before even though I live somewhere that sees a lot of snow I have an 2007 Rav4does it make more sense to:>buy a set of wheels, mount winter tires to them, swap the wheels out by myself in the parking lot of my apartmentor>buy winter tires, pay someone to mount them each fall and put my all seasons back on each springalso, recommendations for spring-thru-fall tires?
>>28820520>buy a set of wheels, mount winter tires to them, swap the wheels out by myself in the parking lot of my apartmentIf you have the storage space, this is easily the best option. You can find used OEM wheels at car-part.com
>>28820525I'd add that mounting & balancing four tires is easily $100 nowadays, but you can still find coupons for a rotation to cost $20 and even full price should be like $35ish. With two sets of tires on wheels you should be able to pay for a rotation and have them swapped if you can't be bothered to diy in the parking lot.

Is getting an LS400 a bad idea? I'm not that interested into ricing it out as they're usually seen. I'm only interested in having a V8 luxobarge to replace my current chrysler 300>timing belt is a necessity Is this the only main issue with them? I understand that it can be a bit of an expensive fix but it's one that only needs to be done every 100,000 miles or so. I assume due to age their parts will be a bit more expensive as it's a luxury vehicle
>>28820636The way it should have been done from the beginning. Remove the dash from the car, remove leather/vinyl, sand it flat and reupholster, then reinstall. It might just be easier to get a good used dash from a scrapper.
>>28819908tldr:Is it better to spend the money to make your junker sellable (which I'd probably get 2-2.5k for, not knowing how much it will cost to do so) or just sell it to a dealer
>>28820638Apparently a weak spot is the starter and alternator if oil drips on it. New timing belt is essential. Some years have non interference engines and snapped belt wont grenade your engine. My parts are on their way since i have no idea when it was the last time it got changed. The belt looks fine but i just want the peace of mind. Overall dont do it, i need all the parts available.
For my first car, I got a used Altima SR V6 with the vq35de engine in it. I assumed I was getting a shitty econobox, and I definitely did, but that engine is pushing hp in the high 200's on a relatively small sedan, and with the CVT it is smooth as hell (even if it handles like shit).I've had it forever now and want to swap out for something, preferably faster, but it seems like every mid-sized sedan produced in the past 10 years has been a 4 cylinder with a "sport" trim that simply matches my current car.The only options for 6 cylinders are massive musclecar deals that should arguably have a V8 at their size but cope with twin turbo and cost a trillion dollars for it. Am I missing something here, or is that really just what it is?
In my old shitbox car the hand brake lever doesn't do the clicky sound when i pull it up and doesn't hold, i have to yank it several times up and down before it finally clicks and holds.Any easy way to solve it? Do i just need to lube something up?

It'll give me a good reason to not put off fixing oil leaks in that case>Some years have non interference engines and snapped belt wont grenade your engine. I believe it's the pre-facelift engines that are non-interference, since the facelift got VVT. The facelift model years are what I'm looking at, as having VVT would help at least just a little bit with efficiency. Not that I care much about that to begin with.>Overall dont do it, i need all the parts available.I did some watching of videos doing the job and it does look like a wrist-deep job. >Toyota Corolla SE 2020 bros, I don't know shit about cars. Today my car wouldn't start, seemed like a dying battery. I asked ChatGPT for help and it said to check the battery date. The battery seems to have been manufactured in March of 2019. ChatGPT said it's surprising it lasted this long. So I'm thinking tomorrow I take the battery out, Uber to AutoZone, have them test it to make sure it's dead, buy whatever battery they recommend to replace it, Uber back to my place, replace it, and hope that fixes it. Is that what I'm supposed to do? Am I going to kill myself replacing it myself? I figured the mechanics take care of all this stuff during routine maintenance. Fuck, I forgot where I put my pliers.

The transmission in my GS400 is starting to slip occasionally. Is it the kiss of death? Is this the sort of thing a shop can fix with a drain & fill and a bottle of Lucas if I address it now, or should I start saving for a rebuild/replacement and pray it holds out until then?
I need to weld the jacking points on my project car. I have a 2-post car lift. Obviously I can't weld the jacking points while the car is on the lift. The question then becomes: how do I raise the car up high enough that I can work underneath it?
>>28823469Check the battery voltage with a multimeter. If it's bad, I'd probably not replace it myself. At least on newer Volvos the car shits itself if the electronics are completely de-energized and then you need to take it to the dealer.

How hard/invasive would it be to wire a button toggle for my VDC fuse?I can crimp cables and stuff it's not that hard but never added a new button. There's some empty button slots. Is this a good easy project to try? Also ABS brakes suck in the snow, established fact and my personal experience agrees, that's the reason I want to do this, but if my goal is to get from point A to point B safely and not out for a rip will I be worse off since it also disables the other traction control features (fake limited slip diff via brakes, not sure about what else)
>>28823469Changing the battery is pretty easy, you got this. Besides getting the right size you have to make sure the orientation of positive/negative terminals matches your vehicle. Autozone is good, tell them the make/model/year, they saved me from making the above mistake once. Also before you uber to autozone make sure the battery cables didn't just come loose from the battery, cinch them down tight. That happened to me once and my bike died in an intersection.

I want to debadge my car because im embarassed to own a Buick, especially one that isnt actually even a Buick. But it will leave these big round sockets if I do. What should I put in their place?
I bought a 2025 Subaru Impreza last year and I believe something may be wrong with it. Occasionally while driving there will be a feeling of a "shudder" I feel through the pedal/seat. The best way I can describe the shudder is like the feeling you get when your heart skips a beat, but you feel it through the vehicle.I don't really know if it's something with AWD system since Subaru's send power to all wheels at all times generally, the transmission, or something else. It could just be a normal part of the car for all I know, but it doesn't feel right.I had the dealer look at it once already but they thought I was talking about a stall/loss of power and troubleshooted it as such. How can I cover my own ass so I can get it looked at/fixed while it's under a warranty period? My current plan is to get a scan tool and see if it's throwing any codes or if it shows any abnormalities and use that to press the dealership more.

>>28826308I’m almost positive it’s the same 4/5 speed (depending on year) from the LS, so it’s good for a few hundred thousand at least barring serious neglect. Has it ever had a transmission service before? Even if it hasn’t, you’re still in the window where you can do it and almost certainly get a good result. I’d have it inspected at your shop (looking for metal flakes in the fluid) and plan for a transmission service. You shouldn’t be planning to replace original transmissions at 90k.

>>28826573It's a '98 and I'm 99% sure it's a 5-speed. The miles are low, but the previous owner didn't take great care of it so I doubt it's been serviced. Mainly, I'm just wondering if I can expect this to cost a few hundred bucks, or a few thousand. It only slips when it's cold out and hasn't had adequate time to warm up, so I don't think it's too far gone, but I don't know what problems are fixable on a transmission and what are "just replace it" tier. I've got a couple of good transmission shops in the area so I'll plan on taking it in for a checkup ASAP.

Unless it's some special snowflake, all of the unique information should be on the car's side and the keys will just be generic boards that program themselves to the car's numbers. what's the procedure for buying a new car from out of state? I live in California and was looking to get a car in Arizona, but I don't know how out of state taxes or registration works.thanks
Okay I got a stupid question. Why is the car on the left a "sports car" but the car on the right a "muscle car", how's that work? Lots of a sports cars have V8's plus the 80's and 90's Firebirds were very sleek and sporty looking. Is it just because of it's heritage?

>>28816552Where did the term "lamb truck" come from? I have never seen a shepherd driving one of those abominations, they just get a regular truck or SUV.
>>28830020In reality there are no hard and fast rules for what a "muscle car" vs. "sports car" are and people who do often have pretty stupid reasons for it (le Corvette is a muscle car because it's American and front-engined). "Muscle" and "sports" really are just two different colloquial terms for a car whose purpose isn't pure practicality (and isn't an off-roader). Muscle caught on as the term in America is all. What happened to separate the terms is that as European and Japanese cars got more popular in America we noticed that their sports cars were a lot different than ours. Theirs seemed to have smaller engines, sophisticated suspensions, and a focus on light weight, and also tended to only seat two, whereas ours were big, had backseats as a pathetic attempt at "practicality," used big truck engines and big truck suspensions, as they were only designed to go fast in a straight line at the drag strip or on the highway. Because there's not any real difference, muscle these days more or less just means any car that seems similar to the style of those cars made during the Displacement Wars of the 60s and 70s, which generally means rear-wheel drive, manual transmission, a V8 bigger than 4 liters, front-engined, 2+2 capacity. But for me, the big thing is just the styling. If the car looks like aerodynamics weren't a consideration at all, then it's powered by "all muscle," and it's more of a muscle car, despite things like the Mustang now being just as good around a corner as anything else thanks to modern suspensions and aero.
>>28830685Oh I guess another personal requirement for me is having a crossplane V8, since once America learned cross-plane V8s run much smoother than flat-plane V8s we just decided that we're never going to build a V12 again.

>>28823457if you want more horsepower then no chances are, without a gearing mod and a tire swap, you’ll just end up spinning the tires more often. chances also are that unless you build up the internals that you’re gonna blow the engine
>>28836242Lambo doors are better
>>28836242Can't tell you why more non-sporty cars don't have them, but the main reason is weight. Pretty much every door mechanism that isn't opening the door the normal way requires adding a lot of weight on the car, which is why even supercars these days often don't bother with them. The closest to a new, cool method of opening the door that seems to be lightweight in a supercar is the KTM X-bow GT-XR but the entire top of the car comes off for that one, so just imagine if it was raining or something.
>>28836275>>28836544Weight would be a fair trade-off in a hot hatch, which are pretty heavy anyway. They're designed to be used in the city, where the convenience in tight parking spaces massively outweighs the drawbacks IMO.Anyway, here's the Peugeot 1007. If they made a faster version of this, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Hell I'd even buy the original one if I could get it here. Van doors are genuinely just that good.
>>28836689I agree with the last part, with so many tight parking spaces and with every other motherfucker driving the biggest SUV or truck that they can buy it sure would be nice.
>>28836725The Swift Sport weighs 970kg and the GR Corolla weighs 1680kg. Obviously weight isn't the primary consideration for hot hatch customers. And maybe the weight of the sliding doors (realistically an extra ~100kg in the crash structure) could be offset somewhere else, like telling your obese wife to stay at home.
Would a Celica 1984 be good for a beginner drift car?
>>28836762First, you're conveniently picking the "hot hatch" that was built from a family sedan platform and not the actual hot hatch it was based on, the GR Yaris, which weights 1,280 kg. Second, modern cars are getting heavier all across the board, that doesn't somehow make hot hatches particularly heavy or particularly well suited to being laden with even more extra weight.

I need tires for my work vehicle. Problem is, I need a tire that can do everything at once. It's not uncommon for me to drive through 12 miles of snow to get to the highway in the morning, drive 200 miles on the highway, then drive through 12 miles of mud to get home. Snow is more common because sometimes it will stick for weeks, but the mud is more severe because sometimes we'll get heavy rain that melts the snow which floods out the roads. What's a tire that can handle mud AND snow AND not completely destroy my fuel economy? Any Isuzu nerds here?I have a 1990 pick up with the 2.6 efi engine. Bought it not running and can’t figure out what’s wrong. Runs fine on starting fluid/gas in a spark bottle but otherwise won’t run. The only thing I can figure is the previous owner tried to swap the engine with a federal emissions engine and never got it to run again. The truck has spark, fuel and compression but has a California ecu with the resistor pack bypassed and a federal wiring harness. Is that really what’s causing it to not start? Or am I missing something? Spray pattern on the injectors looks healthy, I’m at a complete loss, thinking of just putting a carb on it and seeing if it’ll run.

My car is just barely weeping coolant between the block and the head at the location pictured, so I'm assuming the head gasket is toast. That being said, the car says cool, and there's no smoke coming out from the exhaust, so I'm assuming the fire rings are still sealing and it's not *burning* coolant (I will double check the plugs tomorrow just to be 100% sure). So everywhere I ask this I can’t seem to find a definite answer. When it comes to waxing a car, how do you actually remove old wax? Everywhere I look there are conflicting answers. If your A/C was an optional extra, you just need to find the non-A/C belt (double check the routing of the non-A/C version, just in case they do something different with the pulleys). If you're car doesn't have a non-A/C belt available, then just run a piece of string or something around the route you want to take, and the length of that string will give you a rough idea as to how big your belt needs to be.
>>28842261You can drive like that indefinitely. Over time the leak will get worse, but it could be years from now. Also are you really really sure it's not the valve cover gasket leaking and dripping down? >>28842839I would only attempt a flush if you have the proper equipment. Too many things can go wrong otherwise. I'd just drop the pan. If you absolutely refuse to drop the pan, use a mityvac to suck it out from the dipstick/fill port and refill.

>>28844420looks like underinflation wear to me combined with an old tirethe clunking I bet is that stabilizer link, it looks like there is a gap between the bushings and the stabilizer bar, that can make a loud clunk. they are easy to replace, i'd replace the set (take both off, put the new ones both in at the same time, then once they are in tighten the bolt, it's easier to get them in when you can rotate the stabilizer bar)
>>28844400>Also are you really really sure it's not the valve cover gasket leaking and dripping down? Valve cover gasket leaks are far more common than a head gasket leak in this spot (it's uncommon for them to leak on the low pressure oil part vs the cylinder part constantly subjected to 150psi)The valve covers certainly leak a small amount of oil, but the area I'm referring to is weeping coolant, not oil. There's a coolant passage that spans the width of the cylinder head where it's leaking, so I'm guessing that the gasket has just failed there where it's thinnest.
>>28844429You're talking about this guy right. how could this have happened in the first place? couldn't just tighten or nah
>>28844451yep, I misread your original post as oil leak for some reason, that makes more sense. k-seal would seal it up.

>>28844456>k-sealNot sure if this leak is the reason why, but the invoices I got with the car show that the previous owner had already bought some K-Seal for it, so I'd rather not add more of that stuff if I can help it. I'll just do all the top end gaskets as and when I get the time, but for now I'm content that it's not gonna somehow blow out suddenly and dump coolant everywhere. Thanks for your help.

Is buying new wheels for summer and keeping my winter tires on my stock wheels actually financially responsible to save money mounting and remounting the tires (and the damage to the tire bead that comes with that) or is it a completely aesthetic purchase and my money would be better served on something else?
>>28844640it's your car, drive it how you wantwhen i'm at speed, when i slow down i leave it in high gear until the tach hits about 1k, then I push in the clutch and hold the clutch until I come to a stop. this is a good balance of little clutch wear and good gas mileagesome people row it down through the gears (5th to 4th then 3rd then 2nd then stop, letting the clutch out between each), but I'd imagine that causes more clutch wear than it saves on brakes.having the clutch pedal fully pressed doesn't wear the clutch.but like i said, your car, you drive it how you like, in the grand scheme it's not that important
>>28844709sure, if you hunt on marketplace and junkyards you can usually find a decent set of OEM wheels (sometimes with decent tires mounted already) for cheap.with some shops charging nearly $100 to swap a set of tires, they will pay for themselves quickly.

>>28844640Having your clutch pedal pressed while coasting doesn't wear your clutch, but it does wear your throwout bearing. The bearing is only designed to be in use in between short gear changes, so pressing down the pedal while coasting for extended periods is going to put a lot of wear on that part. To replace a throwout bearing, you have to drop the trans out the car, so it's a very laborious and expensive repair. And yes, coasting while in gear consumes zero fuel, so it saves on gas compared to coasting in neutral.
