i'm looking at some sort of street jacket. it's hot as fuck here in the summer, like 100F (38C), and humid. i'm thinking the best option is to go with as light of a mesh jacket as possible and layer with it. so like, put a rain jacket on top or put a hoodie under it or something depending on weather. but that makes me wonder why people would ever use a non-mesh jacket. like, why have a dedicated cold weather motorcycle jacket, instead of having your "street armor" layer and putting your normal clothes on below/above it?
>>28821398Speaking from experience a mesh jacket does nothing at that temperature and humidity besides making you feel hotter and moving doesn't help.As for the cold weather question (You never experienced cold on a bike)Wind chill sucks, so its a good idea to have the best wind breaker known to man. The dead skin of another creature.
>>28821402>besides making you feel hotter and moving doesn't help.there's no shot. i mean, i work outside in this temp and i have to wear long sleeves/pants/boots for work so either i'm coping or i'm just adapted to it. but there's no way that a long sleeve with a bunch of holes in it isn't nice while moving.

>>28821398I've used Klim's Induction jacket (used because lol, wtf Klim?) at those temps. It's never going to be pleasant at a stop light, but assuming you have a wicking (sp?) base layer, it's okay at speed. Better than a work truck with no a/c and the windows, for example. Just realize, you are going to sweat a ton, and you will not smell nice when you arrive if you are using the bike as transport.
I did ride my bike today. It was fun. Didn't do a big ride, but a small 20km ride within the city to my friend's house. >>28821219Since this list is tailored to sportbike riders, it might be good to start collecting models from other disciplines for when the sticky actually eventually gets revivedI'm mostly into ADV/Dual Sports, which have a lot of crossover in learner bikes so there's a bit more choice depending on whether you want to ride mostly road or dirt. The upside of a lot of these models is that they're still fun to ride even when you move on to bigger bikes.CRF300L / CRF300L RallyShit stock suspension but good enough for a beginner and has room to grow with the rider. It's a great platform to upgrade as you go and many experienced riders prefer it over bigger, more powerful bikes due to its light weight and solid build qualityKLX300 - Alternative to the CRF300 with slightly better off-road chops and better stock suspension, but no ADV variant so fuel range is limited. Lightweight and fun to ride in the dirt.KLR650 - A classic with a ton of aftermarket, superb reliability, and a good starting point for someone that wants to get into larger adventure bikes. The only one of the Jap 650 Dual Sports to get ABS and fuel injection so far.And a few bikes that I recommend, but with a couple caveatsTW200 - The most gigachad of all bikes with light weight and fat tires, will go anywhere and do anything except highway speed. Fantastic if you live near trails and/or don't have to go above 60mph . Ancient design with a carburetor and a drum brake in the back.Himalayan 450 - Much improved over the Himalayan 411. Performance is superior to the KLR650 as an ADV bike and there's a solid three year warranty, but the model is newer and Royal Enfield hasn't yet built the reputation of Jap or Euro brandsDR650/XR650l - More dirt-oriented KLR650 alternatives with a ton of aftermarket. Neither have been significantly updated in years and both are still carbureted. All this is my opinion and I'd encourage others to add or subtract bikes to refine the list.

Thinking about my next bike. I like just riding so considering a croozer like the vulcan s 650. Or something like the sv650 because I hear its a good bike. My riding style is just chilling so cruiser seems appealing.
>>28821659I will just add that being able to lift a dirt bike matters, and you can't always assume you'll get to lift it in the textbook back squat postion. Sometimes you're on a steep incline. Sometimes there's a damn mesquite tree right where you want to stand so you have to grab a handle bar and a rear rack from the wrong side, and pivot the bike over it's own tires. Sometimes the shit your standing on wants to fall down the hillside and take you with it, while you're trying to deadlift a motorcycle. My bike is "only" 350lbs, but there have been times where I understand why KTM keeps their serious trail bikes under 300lbs wet.

>>28821701Yep, that's true. It's why I've got the 300l and KLX300 at the top of the list and would probably make for a good explanation paragraph as to the pros and cons of going for a lighter weight dual sport over a heavier ADV (longer range, more stable on the highway, etc)Really, if any discipline needs its own sticky section, it's dual sport because the riding style is so much more varied than other kinds of street-legal riding.

Sometimes some weed but they're a tiny fraction in the grand scheme of things. Most of those fatalities happen in corners, particularly right turns. This could be a byproduct of going too fast while not having any formal training/protective gear/clear state of mind. Death by smoking, death by heart failure, suicide by gun is higher, death by diabetes, death by Alzheimers. All of these stats have more # of deaths than motorcycles even on a per captia level they're higher. Bikes aren't that bad, they just punish mistakes with a heavy hand. "There is no 1 true right way to ride a motorcycle, but there absolutely is objectively wrong ways to ride them. The consequences of such is death or worse"
>>28821950Two things can be true at the same time. One, you can buy down risk significantly with proper attention and reasonable speed. >>28821960>Two things can be true at the same timeTrue, but it's important to remember that all riders can employ various tactics that loads the dice in their favor. The risk % will never be 0. Every day is a new dice roll in some way.Call it cringe but I don't agree with the people that shame milktoast takes like wearing all your gear or only using 90% of your abililty instead of pushing limits at 101% every moment while riding. Is being a bike guy next stage of being a car kid? I don't think kids say "I'm gonna have a Gixxer when I grow up" cause they usually don't know what a Gixxer is. I guess those who have Gixxers now used to want Veyron, Enzo or another car like this but once they got down to earth, they realized it's impossible to afford.
Honest thoughts on UJMs?
>>28822031>Universal Japanese MotorcycleNot as universal as dual sport or lightweight adv bike. Still like them though.
>>28821659even though the wr250r was discontinued back in 2020, you can still find loads of 2015-ish models with around 5000 miles for sub $4000 on marketplace. i've got a drz-400 but i was helping my friend find a wr250r a couple months ago, and it is a really nice bike. suspension is nice, lighter than the drz. it revs a lot higher which is fun. i don't know how the wr does with sumo tires but the drz is great for getting pulled over for doing wheelies in a school zone.

>>28821950>>28821960To be honest, if you adjust the stats the show only the safest riders (no squids, no drunks, no helmetless retards), you also have to adjust the stats to only show the safest car drivers. When it's time to upgrade, I'll probably just toss a rally fairing and a rear rack on a Husky 701.Or Honda could bring back the xr650r with an e start and a bigger oil reservoir, but they won't because they're allergic to fun.
>>28822098I've had some fun on NX650, that one had electronic start. I assume very similar to XR. Pretty easy to pick up but I do lift weights. Would not be comfy on highway for more than an hour due to vibration and wind blasts from trucks throwing me around too easily.

Five hundred flex power
The SV650 looks pretty tempting at this price. I'm looking for a commuter because my WR250R is a little too dirt bike and I wear through they knobby tyres too quickly. My Fireblade is getting old and I'm thinking of turning it into a dedicated track bike.I'm looking for a naked that's light weight and not too expensive, but has decent power. I thought about the Tuono 660 but it's too expensive. The MT07 is another option but this SV650 looks great for the price. Maybe it's a bit long in the tooth?I'd prefer the non-abs model because it's lighter and makes servicing easier. None of my bikes have ABS so I'm not worried about it.
>>28822400She can barely drive. Even if I could afford it. I'm not giving her a 300kg tombstone as a first bike.

>>28822414You could give her a Katana 400 and you can get a Katana 1100.
Were people excited for new bikes? Only thing I'd be excited for is a true unicorn ADV, 180kg, 20+ litres of fuel with fuel efficient engine, 80+ whores power, lots and lots of low end torque. Good ground clearance and possibly made by Honda/Suzuki or Yamaha.
>>28822438She does call me daddy.
>>28822039I love my WR. It's so easy to ride off road, very capable because of the light weight. I do wish it had a little more power for road use, and could go further on the stock tank, but they are my only complaints.
>>28822408>The SV650Really dull bike, and soooo slow.
>>28822466This is what I was worried about, I can't go back to something really slow. Maybe an MT07 would be better?

For the anon who asked last thread, I really like my handy lift. I think this one is from the 80s. Bought it from my friend who's been out of motorcycles for about 10 years. The air cylinder seals sometimes leak a little bit and I need to replace them but it hasn't totally failed. I paid him $400 for it and it's been worth every penny. Even if it cost $2k it would be worth it to me, but I'm always working on something on my bikes, so maybe it depends on how much bike work you're doing.

Took the bike to work today. Roads are completely clear and dry which is a plus, but it was around -17c when I checked the thermometer and the snowmobile gloves I have do jack shit against wind.I get it that handguards/wind breakers are the way to go in the cold, but god damn how is it so difficult to find decent gloves that are somewhat wind resistant? How come 100 buck winter riding gloves lose to generic 20 buck winter work gloves?
>>2882244120 liters of fuel is 16kg, meaning your fabled bike is now 166kg wet before you fill up the gas tank. Assuming you yank off every rider aid and creature comfort, you'd still need a big bore single cylinder engine to meet weight. But you said adv, not dual sport, so you want 80+ horsepower, and probable from a twin because no wants wants to rattle their teeth out for 3 hours straight.See the problem?

Also they don't really help against the biggest issue, wind. They might warm up the palm of your hands, but the side you smack women with is cold.
>>28822708Almost all are now battery powered, you can get heated jackets also, prices aren't mental either-17c must be quite chilly god damn
>>28822685That's why it is a unicorn bike. I don't want a single. Not a race bike ofc, what do Dakar bikes weigh, what is their power and how much fuel do they hold? Not the nu-gen 450s. The old ones.
>>28822717The fastest bike at Dakar was probably a 900cc KTM, but the guy who rode it died in the process.
>>28822714I meant separate battery powered specifically, not from the bikes battery because the alternators in Urals are kinda piss poor and weak, barely able to keep the lights on and the coil is battery fired, meaning any extra strain on the battery during winter might compromise the ignition system.
i just remembered my neighbour had one of these. weirded me tf out.
>>28822717The legendary desert racers (XR650R, KX500, CRF450X, XRV650, etc) make around 60hp and somewhere around 40-50 lb-ft of torque when race prepped, depending on the individual bike . Dirt surfaces can't physically handle much more than that before you lose traction.

Is getting a 2-3 grand used beater bike a great idea for a beginner?
>>28823190Probably. Unless it's an old bike, those can be a mixed bag if you don't know what you're looking at. Stick to something 2000 or newer maybe. You probably won't get ABS or ride modes at this price point but those features are not a replacement for riding skills anyway. >>28823226Not really. Modern ABS is great and will probably stop your bike quicker and more safely than you can on your own in an "O FUG" situation.
>>28823226Yes, because like everything in life, it's not black and white. While they can be helpful, they add weight and a failure point (sometimes a very expensive one in the case of a BMW g/s) if you learned to brake sharply without one. Also, rear ABS can get you in deep shit in the dirt unless you can disable it.
>>28823226Maybe? I could probably talk myself in circles about it for a long time. If I had cash for a bike+gear right now vs waiting another year to get a model with ABS, I would just start riding now. You still need to practice progressive braking in an emergency either way.
>>28822219Yeah I'd prefer she be obese or look like a man.
>>28823142I've personally noticed that regular leather gloves work the best for me, but the winter work gloves I picked up were amazing for riding, aside for being a bit clumsy which isn't really an issue. Heated grips would be nice, but any extra electrical equipment is an absolute no go, there just ain't capacity for it. The original alternator overheats if you keep the headlight on during daytime in the summer, it's that weak. I used to play around with snowmobiles too and had some leftover gloves from those times, but they were all varying degrees of shit even with liners, only the hand guards saved my hands back then.
