Was a brand new clamp too, first time using it.

Ouch. Yeah, you definitely don't want to cheap out on these things, especially if you do suspension work regularly. If I did this sort of stuff more often, I would definitely consider getting a Hazet safety spring compressor, it's has a good design and it's made in Germany. It's a little pricey, but as an investment definitely worth it imo. The compressor I got has safety lock pins on each claw, so I think I should be fine.

I am such a fucking dumbass. I am nearly done with a Serpentine belt installation for my 2014 Honda Civic EX but i am stuck on putting the rubber on the last pulley. I have velcro for one portion of it but i need to find a easy way to secure the other rubber to another pulley so i can finish it.

Any easy way to secure the A/C pulley so i can finish putting the rubber on the alternator pulley?

Learn to tight lightly on both the socket for the drain plug and the oil filter. Be sure to get oil on the rim of the filter(where the rubber is) then you are fine. Once you are level again (off of stands or ramps) you need to wait for it to settle, then measure the oil, check for leaks, then run for 5 mins and do it all again. This gets the oil through the system.

Brands don't really matter if you change every 5,000 miles, but it really matters if you want to race.

What this guy said, you don't need to crank the hell out of the drain plug or the filter (or filter cover if it's a cartridge type) when putting them back on. Filter is something like a quarter-turn past finger tight if you lubed the gasket. Also don't forget to put oil back in it, or forget the drain plug before filling, I've seen both of those done.

Oh and be careful about wind, even a light breeze can have shitty old oil whipping all over the place as it's draining and then you're spending more time on cleanup than the actual oil change.

Speaking of clean up. Cat litter works great on concrete. Clothing i recommend toothpaste and dish detergent with a good scrub of a tooth brush and let it sit for 30 mins before washing. Works well enough to remove stains but you are fucked if gets on leather.

If you run out of laundry detergent then 2 table spoons of dish detergent and 2 table spoons of baking soda works great in a pinch.

entire cat back on my 2015 f150 rotted out this week. sounded like a riced out civic. straight piped the resonator and bought a new muffler from napa.
when i was done i realized the mounting hooks on the tail piper were all rotted off. i thought about nigger rigging it with some sire and clamps, but just left it off.

Gotta replace the oil cooler lines on my dad's 19 silverado. Anyone know if I can get any upgraded lines or am I just looking at replacing them again in another 5 or so years when the crimp starts leaking again? Thought about maybe cutting out the crimps, flaring the tubing and installing some kind of stainless steel mesh hose so they're still flexible but that seems retarded too.

I want to replace this corroded component in my R129's radio amplifier. The car is making a constant high pitched noise I think due to the amp, although it does have an old aftermarket stereo. Based on the C#### adjacent to it I am assuming it is an axial ceramic capacitor, like its identical neighbor C2103.
How can I find the values for this? Google search only showed color codes for 3+ stripes, this only has one.
I guess I should have removed the identical cap and measured it, but I dont really trust my multimeter for capacitance measurements.

had something similar happen cept it was a god damn fuel filter element swelled shut and it somehow pumped well enough to run but it built so much pressure it burned the pump up.
when I parted out the lines and filters it got put on a car with a mechanical fuel pump and it'd deadhead at the filter, nothing in the filter it just would not flow throught his shit.

Hey /o/ so I just took my car into a dealer and I’m nearly 100% sure they intentionally punctured my tire.

Is there anything I can do about it? There is like an inch+ massive hole on the inside that goes all the way to the metal. There were no air pressure issues on the way there and I find it unbelievable it wasn’t at the very least leaking tons of air if this was already there.

Is there any way this could have happened prior to the dealership? It literally looks like someone stabbed it from the top down

Generally just a spare wheel+tire, then some tools. Lug wrench, jack, some basic screwdrivers/plier/wrench etc. Some materials for expedient repairs, like heavy wire, zip ties, duct tape, epoxy. Also some non perishable food and water.

If a fuel pump, ignition coil, something like that dies while I'm driving it's going to be a tow. Only thing I've ever had strand me was a water pump and it's not like I'm going to carry a spare water pump, belt, basket, impact wrench etc with me.

holy fuck this type of brake flaring tool is great. i didn't even need to chamfer the zinc steel tube after cutting it, it made a perfect flare first time.
if you're using with nicopp lines just remember to anneal the line so it actually forms a proper bubble. tried flaring two times before i realised why it kept stuffing up.

I got a 2000 Tacoma 2.7 manual - I frequently drive up a long hill. Somedays it cruises 4th gear at 60 no problem, next day the best it can do is 50. A few days later its 60, sometimes its 50. dunno specs unfortunately, but generally tyres that have lower treadwear ratings will be grippier because it's a tradeoff; you want grip it'll need a soft compound but that means it's not gonna last long. you want a long lasting tyre then don't be surprised if you start sliding in the wet because it's just too hard to get a grip.
sometimes some cheap chink tyres will be surprisingly good, unfortunately rubber compounds are often a trade secret so you don't really know unless you look at reviews, and even then it's hard to tell because most people just use it to drive to and from work or to get groceries, fewer actually try to push the tyre to really see how well it handles, and fewer still actually bother to write up such reviews.

The biggest ball busting you can experience as you get into wrenching is constantly not having the right tool, or making do with shitty workarounds. It will make everything more frustrating, take longer, and kill motivation.

The cars emergency jack is just for roadside tire changes. Anons suggestion of buying a harbor freight jack, two jack stands, and a basic tool kit is the best thing you can do to make your entire experience more productive and enjoyable.

I'm still using my Harbor Freight Pittsburgh socket sets from 10+ years ago.

Need some help bros. Did a piston soak on 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.4. Now, it starts up fine but gas pedal completely stops responding sometimes at high speeds. Restarting the car fixes it, and there’s no CEL. Any ideas on what this might be?

How did you do the soak? If you have a PCV issue you could’ve messed up your MAF and that will screw with throttle response. Clean the MAF and throttle body and see what happens.

Plugs out, pistons about midway in the cylinder. A shot glass of b12 in each cylinder twice a day, and work the crank bolt slightly back and forth to jostle the fluid a bit. We did replace the PCV valve at the same time actually.

Nothing like having to replace a component you just replaced. Original unit lasted 110km and 30 years... Replacement lasted 37 days before it lost a diode in the rectifier cassette...

BTDT, I've done a half floorpan all at once and it was a huge PITA because of having to move or dodge handbrake lines, brackets, transmission bracket, exhaust brackets.

It's an edge case at best. Saying its killing engines and manufactures don't care is being overly dramatic.

I have run a catch can on engine before for diagnostic purposes, but they really end up causing more issues. In cold climates they will collect water and freeze at the separator sponge blocking off the PCV systems causing oil leaks.

Really you should just run the stock system if its a modern car. Partial vacuum decreases friction/losses in the engine slightly, also helps slow down leaks or seepage if you have old cars etc. A little oil vapor being eaten at high or consistent revs is no big deal unless you have severe blowby from worn or damaged internals.

If its old enough or worn out, you can get away with just a breather tube and deal with the lost efficiency of losing the partial vacuum in the crankcase.

Catch cans are mostly snake oil.

Replacing the rear shocks in my truck. Easy job, three bolts topside, one bolt on the bottom. But that bottom bolt gets torqued to 405 ft-lbs! My torque wrench goes up to 250. But I know how to math, so I figure I can use a torque multiplier to get the torque spec I need. But god DAMN those things are pricey. Hopefully, I only need to do this job once, and I don't want to buy a $500 tool to do it. What are the alternatives, or do cheaper multipliers exist?

I didnt, I was just limited it what work I could do with it. Its doesnt go high enough for me to get to the 2nd rung on the jack stand, so when changing tires I have to jack up the car, take the tire off, then lower the jack so it fits on the jack stand. if the jack went a few inches higher then I could save a ton of time
