I recently purchased these 3 position slip joint pliers, and I really like them. It's a copy of a more expensive Snap On model. As far as I'm aware, Icon and Snap On make the only two models of 3 position slip joint pliers on the market.

Was a brand new clamp too, first time using it.

Ouch. Yeah, you definitely don't want to cheap out on these things, especially if you do suspension work regularly. If I did this sort of stuff more often, I would definitely consider getting a Hazet safety spring compressor, it's has a good design and it's made in Germany. It's a little pricey, but as an investment definitely worth it imo. The compressor I got has safety lock pins on each claw, so I think I should be fine.

I am such a fucking dumbass. I am nearly done with a Serpentine belt installation for my 2014 Honda Civic EX but i am stuck on putting the rubber on the last pulley. I have velcro for one portion of it but i need to find a easy way to secure the other rubber to another pulley so i can finish it.

Any easy way to secure the A/C pulley so i can finish putting the rubber on the alternator pulley?

>>
>>28827662
You can't drive without the serpentine belt(you sure as shit can try) anon. You can delete the A/C for more power but you need to get the right belt length.

I got a passed down Chevy sonic, and this weekend I am going to try to do the oil change myself for the first time.
Tell me all the ways I can fuck it up so I'm extremely afraid and scared while I do it.
>>
>>28827728
Learn to tight lightly on both the socket for the drain plug and the oil filter. Be sure to get oil on the rim of the filter(where the rubber is) then you are fine. Once you are level again (off of stands or ramps) you need to wait for it to settle, then measure the oil, check for leaks, then run for 5 mins and do it all again. This gets the oil through the system.

Brands don't really matter if you change every 5,000 miles, but it really matters if you want to race.

>>
>>28827831
What this guy said, you don't need to crank the hell out of the drain plug or the filter (or filter cover if it's a cartridge type) when putting them back on. Filter is something like a quarter-turn past finger tight if you lubed the gasket. Also don't forget to put oil back in it, or forget the drain plug before filling, I've seen both of those done.

Oh and be careful about wind, even a light breeze can have shitty old oil whipping all over the place as it's draining and then you're spending more time on cleanup than the actual oil change.
>>
>>28827851
Speaking of clean up. Cat litter works great on concrete. Clothing i recommend toothpaste and dish detergent with a good scrub of a tooth brush and let it sit for 30 mins before washing. Works well enough to remove stains but you are fucked if gets on leather.

If you run out of laundry detergent then 2 table spoons of dish detergent and 2 table spoons of baking soda works great in a pinch.
>>
>>28827856
Actually 1 table spoon of dish detergent is enough. But generally if you use laundry detergent you only need to use 2 tablespoons of either powder or liquid. You can buy the premeasured spoons for that to make your life easy.
>>
>>28827831
>>28827851
Thanks. I have a garage so no worries about the wind. I'll be on my way to vatozone to get the oil, filter and pan.
Wish me luck.

I finally found my dream truck the exact way I want it. I had this exact one when I was 16 but had to sell it before joining the marines. But now I saw this NAM and I don’t know what to do. I don’t know shit about cars and stuff like this. He accepted my offer of $5700 but now that I see this I just don’t know. Any of yall have experience with this? entire cat back on my 2015 f150 rotted out this week. sounded like a riced out civic. straight piped the resonator and bought a new muffler from napa.
when i was done i realized the mounting hooks on the tail piper were all rotted off. i thought about nigger rigging it with some sire and clamps, but just left it off.
now it's dumping exhaust all over my rear axle. i'm debating whether or not i want to fix it.

also did the front and rear brakes/rotors, and mounted a new set of Duratracs.

Gotta replace the oil cooler lines on my dad's 19 silverado. Anyone know if I can get any upgraded lines or am I just looking at replacing them again in another 5 or so years when the crimp starts leaking again? Thought about maybe cutting out the crimps, flaring the tubing and installing some kind of stainless steel mesh hose so they're still flexible but that seems retarded too.

I want to replace this corroded component in my R129's radio amplifier. The car is making a constant high pitched noise I think due to the amp, although it does have an old aftermarket stereo. Based on the C#### adjacent to it I am assuming it is an axial ceramic capacitor, like its identical neighbor C2103.
How can I find the values for this? Google search only showed color codes for 3+ stripes, this only has one.
I guess I should have removed the identical cap and measured it, but I dont really trust my multimeter for capacitance measurements.
>>
>>28829137
Looked into this further and it could be a "0-Ohm resistor". If so I can just substitute it for a jumper wire. Maybe the C#### stands for component not capacitor.

had something similar happen cept it was a god damn fuel filter element swelled shut and it somehow pumped well enough to run but it built so much pressure it burned the pump up.
when I parted out the lines and filters it got put on a car with a mechanical fuel pump and it'd deadhead at the filter, nothing in the filter it just would not flow throught his shit.

Question for DIY car modders. I got money to burn so the question is this.

Has anyone had any luck with a stiffer chassis mod? I want to know if its worth it before spending my money.
>>
>>28833966
depends on the car, most unibody cars you just weld rails to the floor to connect the subframes.
unless you have harsher coilsprings you probably don't get much from this for most cars.
>>
Hey /o/ so I just took my car into a dealer and I’m nearly 100% sure they intentionally punctured my tire.

Is there anything I can do about it? There is like an inch+ massive hole on the inside that goes all the way to the metal. There were no air pressure issues on the way there and I find it unbelievable it wasn’t at the very least leaking tons of air if this was already there.

Is there any way this could have happened prior to the dealership? It literally looks like someone stabbed it from the top down

does anyone carry spare parts for their car in their car
like spare wheel/tire, ignition parts, fuel pump?
>>
>>28839038
Spare spark plug wires. I had one break while I was driving once so I bought a whole set. Might as well just leave the others in the trunk just in case, not like they take up a lot of room. Also a bottle of oil
>>
>>28839038
Generally just a spare wheel+tire, then some tools. Lug wrench, jack, some basic screwdrivers/plier/wrench etc. Some materials for expedient repairs, like heavy wire, zip ties, duct tape, epoxy. Also some non perishable food and water.

If a fuel pump, ignition coil, something like that dies while I'm driving it's going to be a tow. Only thing I've ever had strand me was a water pump and it's not like I'm going to carry a spare water pump, belt, basket, impact wrench etc with me.

Just wondering if there are any friendly machnics that can help me choose the correct hub spacers for some wheels that came off an 86. How do I figure out the bore size? I've already fit 2 on the rear, but the 2 on the front are scraping against the break capliar, so it might just be smarter to get a breaks, but even then I'll probably buy the wrong thing casue I clearly bought the wrong wheels

temperature?
>>
>>28841277
>Literally the wind.
not the wind. route is someone protected by the wind and we don't get much wind and this has happened on many different occasions.

>>28841333
>temperature?
doubt. happens when cold or hot, I thought about that too. Could it be a slightly weaker spark on one of the four cylinders? I have not noticed any thing idle at the light or driving, seems smooth and consistent to me.
>>
>>28841368
Next i woudl go to check the spark plugs cap and rotor. But im not sure. Could be fuel pump or parking brake dragging. Or bad MAP sensor or something. Im not much help here
>>
>>28841368
are you >>28841331? bad o2 sensor giving wrong info to the ecu so it's adjusting fuel for something that isn't actually happening.
might be worth getting a vacuum gauge. old school but can still tell so much about an engine, new or old.
>>
>>28841388
Nah ive got a dodge ram 5.2 with the o2 sensor shit
>>
>>28841388
I am not o2 anon.
>>28841379
>heck the spark plugs cap
2 coil packs, each to two plugs. I have checked and replaced the wires and plugs before
.
>Could be fuel pump
already went out was replaced.

>parking brake dragging
hmmmmmm.....

>bad MAP sensor
will check

>>28841388
>bad o2 sensor
will check

Any recommendations for high end rotors for a stock Honda Civic EX 2014 aka 9th gen civic.

I know ceramic pads are nice but what kind of rotors should i get for better braking power on the road? Also just brands in general for both rotors/brakes?
>>
>>28841552
plain iron rotors will work plenty fine. get grippier tyres if you want to slow down quicker
>>
>>28841650
Thanks anon. Any specs i would have to look for in tires for grip? I am kind of clueless on that end. No issue on cost in my part my car is paid off.
>>
>>28841667
dunno specs unfortunately, but generally tyres that have lower treadwear ratings will be grippier because it's a tradeoff; you want grip it'll need a soft compound but that means it's not gonna last long. you want a long lasting tyre then don't be surprised if you start sliding in the wet because it's just too hard to get a grip.
sometimes some cheap chink tyres will be surprisingly good, unfortunately rubber compounds are often a trade secret so you don't really know unless you look at reviews, and even then it's hard to tell because most people just use it to drive to and from work or to get groceries, fewer actually try to push the tyre to really see how well it handles, and fewer still actually bother to write up such reviews.

Good insight. Anything helps anon. I will hit up youtube.

Complete wrenchlet here, I just swapped out my air filter (complete newfag job I'm aware) and I can already feel the desire to know more intensify

I'm gonna invest in some car jack stands soon; is my emergency toolkit jack enough or should I get a proper jack? What other bare essential tools should a newfag get?
>>
>>28842858
Go to harbor freight. Buy the 300 piece mechanic tool set for $200. Buy a Pittsburg jack and two jack stands. That's all you need to get started.
>>
>>28842858
get a proper jack, the emergency toolkit jack is only meant for swapping a wheel by the roadside, you're not meant to get underneath one supported only by that (or really, any jack for that matter)

Follow this anons advice first. Picrel jack is the move for sure, it's a direct knockoff of a SnapOn jack that costs like 5x as much. The 3-ton jackstands are all you need.

The biggest ball busting you can experience as you get into wrenching is constantly not having the right tool, or making do with shitty workarounds. It will make everything more frustrating, take longer, and kill motivation.

The cars emergency jack is just for roadside tire changes. Anons suggestion of buying a harbor freight jack, two jack stands, and a basic tool kit is the best thing you can do to make your entire experience more productive and enjoyable.

I'm still using my Harbor Freight Pittsburgh socket sets from 10+ years ago.

Need some help bros. Did a piston soak on 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.4. Now, it starts up fine but gas pedal completely stops responding sometimes at high speeds. Restarting the car fixes it, and there’s no CEL. Any ideas on what this might be?
>>
>>28843371
>Did a piston soak
Fell for a meme on a working engine
>>
>>28843371
How did you do the soak? If you have a PCV issue you could’ve messed up your MAF and that will screw with throttle response. Clean the MAF and throttle body and see what happens.
>>
>>28843508
Plugs out, pistons about midway in the cylinder. A shot glass of b12 in each cylinder twice a day, and work the crank bolt slightly back and forth to jostle the fluid a bit. We did replace the PCV valve at the same time actually.

Nothing like having to replace a component you just replaced. Original unit lasted 110km and 30 years... Replacement lasted 37 days before it lost a diode in the rectifier cassette...

Is there a way to replace the hoses without needing to drain the reservoir? I’m assuming all this dried liquid around the hose means it’s leaking right?

I hate electrical work so much
I bought a new 13 corolla 13 years ago and 10 years ago I installed a remote start
fast forward, the cables must've gone bad or something but my started has been fucked and alternator fails more often than not
I have to rewire that shit but I'm old now and I dont want to pay the arab to do it cuz he's going to jew me
>>
>>28844639
its still wild to me that I can order parts from Japan or the UAE, usually for significantly lower prices than buying the same part through the US dealer chain, and it gets shipped to my front door in less than 4 business days when it takes the dealer 5-7 days to get them in domestically.

Welding continues, the rust was worse than I anticipated, should've just stripped the whole floor and cut it all out instead of trying to patch it together.
I'll know better for the next car

BTDT, I've done a half floorpan all at once and it was a huge PITA because of having to move or dodge handbrake lines, brackets, transmission bracket, exhaust brackets.
Weld-thru primer is nice to have, clico fasteners are nice to have, and this channel and this video in particular are game changers. Welding sheet metal is a art. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_u31t13QO6A

What’s the best way to do scuffed up black plastic like this? Should I just sand it a bit and then prime it and hit it with flat black spray paint?

It's an edge case at best. Saying its killing engines and manufactures don't care is being overly dramatic.

I have run a catch can on engine before for diagnostic purposes, but they really end up causing more issues. In cold climates they will collect water and freeze at the separator sponge blocking off the PCV systems causing oil leaks.

Really you should just run the stock system if its a modern car. Partial vacuum decreases friction/losses in the engine slightly, also helps slow down leaks or seepage if you have old cars etc. A little oil vapor being eaten at high or consistent revs is no big deal unless you have severe blowby from worn or damaged internals.

If its old enough or worn out, you can get away with just a breather tube and deal with the lost efficiency of losing the partial vacuum in the crankcase.

Catch cans are mostly snake oil.

Replacing the rear shocks in my truck. Easy job, three bolts topside, one bolt on the bottom. But that bottom bolt gets torqued to 405 ft-lbs! My torque wrench goes up to 250. But I know how to math, so I figure I can use a torque multiplier to get the torque spec I need. But god DAMN those things are pricey. Hopefully, I only need to do this job once, and I don't want to buy a $500 tool to do it. What are the alternatives, or do cheaper multipliers exist?

are you losing fluid? because it looks full. and if you arent losing fluid then its something else. and from the looks of everything else, this car is at least 20 years old

What bottle jack should i use to start doing standard maintenance on a RAV4? Live in an apartment, will wrench in the parking lot, can't carry a regular floor jack.
>>
>>28847401
Do not trust your life with a bottle jack. Buy a compact floor jack like picrel and 2 jack stands.
>>
>>28847484
i had one of these briefly and it didn't go high enough to be useful
>Do not trust your life with a bottle jack
don't trust your life to any jack, that's what jack stands are for
>>
>>28847484
i have one like this and it doesnt raise the car high enough
>>
>>28847401
>can't carry a floor jack
ngmi
>>
>>28847675
It isn't about the weight, it's the storage in the apartment. Must have small foot print. Same reason i can't have ramps.

>>28847484
Interesting, might consider it. And yes, i already have a par of jack stands. Thanks

>>28847627
How did you fix it?
>>
>>28847909
I didnt, I was just limited it what work I could do with it. Its doesnt go high enough for me to get to the 2nd rung on the jack stand, so when changing tires I have to jack up the car, take the tire off, then lower the jack so it fits on the jack stand. if the jack went a few inches higher then I could save a ton of time
