car barely starting because of the cold weather
does it mean i need a new battery ?
>>
>>28826688
How cold? Like sub zero or constantly like -20?
>>
Cold weather makes it much harder for a car battery to do its job, so a car that barely starts in the cold often points to a weak or aging battery—but it doesn’t *automatically* mean you need a new one. Batteries lose a lot of their cranking power when temperatures drop, especially if they’re more than 3–5 years old, and thickened engine oil also makes the engine harder to turn over. That said, corroded battery terminals, a failing alternator, or a starter on its way out can cause similar symptoms. If the car starts fine once it warms up or after a jump, the battery is the most likely culprit and worth testing soon.

Charge the battery for starters.
I like the Victron energy stuff myself.
Or get a $25 trickle charger.
A cheap multimeter is also a good way to see if the alternator is putting out 13.5volts+

Then see if it still starts poorly.

i tried 2 batteries both are older
and the first start in the morning barely starts
then its fine during the rest of the day

first start stalled but i think it does that every time you put in a new battery. the next 2 starts and one start when i went to the store was fine.
tomorrow morning should be the real test.
>>
Not necessarily. Cold rapes the amperage. But, probably.
>>
>>28827030
the lady at the store basically forced me to buy those red and green rings and grease for the battery post. maybe they were free i dont know. she just pulled them out and put them with my order.

Battery swaps can cause a whole bunch of codes in newer cars. Don't get stressed if it does.
>>

>grease for the battery post
It's not a sexual lubricant. That stuff is applied after the terminals are installed.

I take the battery out and take it indoors with me in the warm then I put it back in early in the morning and drive to work.

car batteries can often be defective and it sounds like yours was

it happened with my honda. bought the car with the defective battery and didn't realize it for a long time. date on it was really new so i trusted it.

symptoms are that it loses charge and needs to be jumped every so often, weather bearing. it gets worse in the cold.

so i was blaming parasitic drain and trying to find parasitic drain and not finding it for the longest time.

i was charging the battery once per month at first, then it became really random, like coming out to find it dead once per week or every few days, then once it got cold it ended up needing to be charged again after every single time i drove it.

finally said fuck it and replaced the battery and it can cold start every single attempt just fine now.

You can buy a battery tester for like 30 bucks or something on Amazon.
>>
>>28828305
yeah i forgot to mention that bit

i ended up taking the car to a shop as it was also developing a coolant leak and i mentioned the battery, he tested it with one of those and it was bad. for the entire time i had that shit battery there were weeks and months on end where i saw no symptoms at all so it's prob worth picking up a battery tester

Cold weather in itself is hardly the issue. This year I abused an Interstate battery to its premature death, by driving only every 2 weeks or so in my Park Avenue,, all summer long, which for some reason constantly draws enough power, every month, to drain even the highest grade battery completely dead if let sit for a month. Some Lexus models behave that way. About the only remedy is a solar charger on the rear deck--that is if you're a retired NEET who doesn't commute regularly.
