The Transalp is such an odd bike. It's got the wheels and controls of an ADV bike, but Honda clearly intends for it to mostly be a street-oriented riding. It's got a bit too much power for riding in dirt and that oil sump hangs out like the obvious weak spot of a Nintendo boss. At the same time they didn't give it cruise control, which you'd expect in a street tourer.
I get the whole "Most ADV riders don't actually go off-road" thing, but that didn't stop Yamaha from selling a bazillion Tenere 700s.

I think the transalp would be the best commuter bike out there if it came with cruise control. as it stands you can add cruise control and good luggage for chores and you can ride all day on anything that can be described truthfully as a road, which is great

Also the maintenance book says both sides are .12mm. Shouldn't the gap be different sizes for intake and exhaust?

The Yamaha Y-Connect app.

https://global.yamaha-motor.com/ms/business/mc/connectivity/yconnect/lc.html

It logs your mileage and compares that with other Yamaha riders around the world. It also gives you service reminders and vehicle fault notices in addition to telling you where you bike is parked and it monitors your fuel consumption.

Some do, some don't. Usually the sidecar brakes are linked to the rear brake, some had them linked to the front brakes too.
Just like not all sidecars had a driven wheel or not all transmissions had a reverse gear.

Honda made a better bike for the market, imo. Every first time ADV dad, dirt racers excepted, makes the same mistake. They overwstimate how Brody they're going to be on dirt, and they VASTLY underestimate how much discomfort they're going to put up with after being on the road for 3+ hours, a good chunk of it up on their pegs. 4-6 months in and they realize they should have just bought a fucking Versys.

The Tenere may be the #1 seller, but unfair hot take, it's a shit touring bike stock. "It's better than a single cylinder dual sport!" No shit man, what isn't? The people I see most happy with their Tenny typically did insane shit on 2 strokes back before their frontal lobes fully developed.

As for cruise control, any bike with throttle-by-wire without it these days is undercutting a price point.

In pennsylvania we can start getting "classic motor vehicle" plates for 15 year old vehicles - permanent plates that are good for occasional use like to motor shows and to exhibit.
The average vehicle age in the united states is about 13 years.
>>
>>28843388
>>28843369
Oh I see. What does that have to do with the Tenere 700 being good off-road, though?
>>
>>28843441
i was thinking that the momentum of the weight of the sidecar would would cause the bike to pull to the right under heavy braking but i've never riden with a sidecar so this is purely conjecture.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4i3O_dU36E
>>
>>28843443
nothing. i was simply pointing out that adv dads can't compete (on or off-road) with the chad maxiscooter which is the better bike for people who actually ride their bikes.

because riding my bike is more rewarding than jumping in puddles of mud.

>>
>>28843429
The ADV market is absolutely packed with street oriented bikes though, including a few in Honda's own lineup. People go for the T7 because they're one of the few off-road-leaning ADVs that do well out on BDRs or public lands closed to OHVs while being decent on the street, especially with a few relatively inexpensive mods.
I did grow up around a lot of desert racers, so my viewpoint is biased as hell, but Yamaha sells enough of them to indicate there's definitely a good market segment for them.

Any tips for a rookie rider? Yes, I read the sticky. I'm looking for a low maintenance, fuel efficient bike that can cruise comfortably on highways in europe (130-150 kph or 80-90 mph). So far my eyes are on a Honda NC700 or NC750 maybe. Anyone know of any other good models?

Get the NC. I had an NC700X as my first bike, it was awesome for a commuter and learning bike. I will say the seat is OK for around town, but definitely get uncomfortable after about 3 hours in the saddle. I miss the gas mileage, it's amazing being able to go nearly 300 miles on one tank. My current Z900RS gets about half that, but I do ride it much harder. I'll probably pick up another one at some point just because they're such good machines, and while I absolutely love my Kawasaki, the NC wpuld be much better suited to long tours. There are people who throw crash guards, skid plates, and knobbies on the NCs and make mini transalps.

Unironically douse the bike in wd40 or some comparable multi-oil before giving it a thorough wash with a mix of warm water and regular car-soap.

Would a 1995 Virago 535 be a good choice for a first bike? I'd use it to learn how to wrench too.

~2000€, 20 thousand kilometres, second owner and supposedly kept in a garage the whole time.

Pic related, the bike.

You bought a hornet with better suspension and "truck" tires. They're good rides. Get a metal skid plate, metal handguards, and lower bars to protect the radiator/fairing asap if you plan on going fast on dirt. Also, sorry about that air filter change process.

He probably wanted to check if the moped guy isn't seriously hurt.

I would say the moped guy is guilty too cause he was riding on the cycling lane. But the truck guy is more guilty cause if someone was cycling on the cycling lane, he would likely hit him too cause he was driving like a moron. Unfortunatelly I don't think beating someone up for driving like a moron can be considered self defence.
>>
>>28844366
It was straight up road rage. You don't make a left turn from the far right lane, into a stopped vehicle, unless you mean to do it. And doing that to a someone on 2 wheels or on foot is aggravated assault, at the least.

I wouldn't give a shit if the cyclist took off his helmet and beat the fucker unconscious, because at least it would prevent him from getting in his truck, backing up, and trying to finish the job.

Not guilty, your honor.

Don't you think bikes burn surprisingly much gas? For example, GSXS1000GT has 1 l 152 hp engine which is more or less what you would expect from a downsized car. But compared to a car it has zero frontal area and weights nothing which is why it's faster than said car would be and despite this it's only 43 mpg which is what you would expect from said car

it's because the aerodynamics of a motorcycle are shit, even superbikes aren't better than a prius. It's because you would need to cover the wheels and the rider to have proper aerodynamics, but it isn't practical. The high reving engines doesn't help either.

lets look at this bike specifically
and say its 43mpg just to use your number
so lets take a look at some 1000cc car engines
the three cylinder ford focus ecoboost has 10000cc engine, it makes 123 horses (but much more torque, you can always trade one for the other) and gets 35mpg combined. it gets 42mpg highway
now you may think "why does the big vehicle have the same fuel mileage as the small vehicle" and its got very little to do with the weight or the frontal area as some other posters are saying
the engine is burning a similar amount of fuel to make a similar amount of power
this is exactly what you'd expect
in a car, this lets you go agonizingly slow
on a motorcycle, this lets you go extremely fast
so why do large cars have so much worse gas mileage? they're, generally, making way more horsepower to move their fat selves at a pace that isn't considerably snail like. to make more horsepower, you have to burn more gas. if theyre not making a ton of horses, theyre making a lot of torque, which is the same thing, horsepower just being torque over time.

>>
>>28844481
>10000cc ford ecoboost
this would be very fast, of course i meant to say that its a 1000cc engine
i also want to add that of course you can increase fuel mileage by getting more energy out of the fuel you burn. this is increased efficiency. this is how we went from 8mpg to 25mpg while making more horsepower the whole time.
But comparing contemporary engines to contemporary engines pretty much everyone wants to make the most efficient possible engine because of various regulatory requirements, so you expect horsepower and fuel mileage to basically be hand in hand
there are some ways to fudge the numbers: for instance GM products will only use 4 of their 6 or 8 cylinders when youre cruising on the highway. this increases highway fuel mileage. but when theyre doing this, they aren't actually making the horsepower numbers they claim.
this is also how you get better mileage on your motorcycle. click up to a high gear, and keep your revs low. now your bike isn't actually making 150 horsepower, and youre not burning 150 horsepower worth of fuel.

In the grand scheme of things, no. Relative to other dirt bikes that do not require you to remove a 4.5 gallon gas tank just to access the air box? Yes.

Scooters are made to be cheap and be neglected by the subpar people that ride them. Don't expect servicing the loser mover to be any easier than dealing with the rider.

If the service manual says keep them identical, just do that. If you demand an explanation you'll have to track down the engineer who dictated the spec and ask him.

My buddy got one recently. We actually used it on some cogsuckers over on the west end a few nights ago(allegedly). Compared to the regular air 5 I got last year, the plasma comp is nice. Not that the normal TA5 has much impulse of course, but this thing basically just shakes once in your hand. Imagine about double the jump you feel from a typical simshooter. That's it. And based on the, uh, scrap metal we, uh, decommissioned, the voltage drop isn't an actual issue at all. In my opinion not really worth it if you have the regular TA5 as it doesn't do anything that gun doesn't do, but if you're upgrading from like a TA4 or like a Hardgrid Volt 3, it's definitely worth the extra creds. Just flash it with the current nightjammer patch ASAP, out of the box the interlock is glitchy and it won't let you carry with a precharge on standby.

The standard model US spec model is just over 450lbs, the World Raid model is ~485lbs.

>don't see how it would be better than putting a rally tower and a bigger tank on a proper dirt bike

It's absolutely 100% not, especially as they are off the showroom floor.

I already have a plated CR250R that's "street legal" and a gen 1 DR-Z I've done everything to that can be done save a stroker crank.

I think it's cool AF, I have the experience to ride one well off road. Hell it was fun just building something that puts a Stage 3 GYTR kit equipped T7 to shame.

>>28844767
>why not something like a beta/ktm 500

A friend and I traded bikes on a trail ride for a minute once because he wanted to ride my DRZ to see if he wanted to do a bunch of motor work to his while he had it apart.

He let me ride the 500EXC he had borrowed on a trail we're both familiar with. I took it maybe 300 yards before I gave it back and told him to keep me away from it.

It was the only bike I'd ever rode that genuinely spooked me because I was instantly way, WAY too confident riding it to the point I was willing to attempt things I *knew* were well beyond my skill with a bike I was not at all familiar with. I knew I would hurt myself badly if I bought one.

Also didn't help was it blowing up on him about 30 minutes later lol

>or even a 690/701?

I wanted one until I looked at one in person - the fuel tank was an automatic nope and the motors sound like a wheezy sewing machine PoS.

For what they cost I'd decided I'd rather build a motor for my DRZ.

I'd argue that a good PE can green light shit that would typically rock the boat too much for a conglomerate like Polaris to consider. They were stressing with sales pre-new scout, and only known for being a rival of harley. Now there's a chance for a fresh start and it could lead to innovative change be it design like the new chief vintage or mechanical innovation like the FTR.

Or they could enshitify it all and ruin our day. As for a faired bike, idk man imagine them trying their hand at WBSK kinda like how cadillac is doing F1 shit.

So, i bought my iron 883. Rode it on Tuesday and then when i was going home it didn’t started. I put the battery to charge but it wasn’t working, so i had to take it home in a truck. I changed the battery and now it tries to start but it doesn’t. The battery is new, the spark plugs are working, I don’t know what else could be. It does not seem to be a electrical problem. They say that the gas tank or the hose that carries the gas could be clogged. I don’t know, the repairman will come tomorrow. Any ideas?

>How do you know when you're getting in over your head?
>It's super scary, but the progression and new sensations are so addicting.

You look at the thing you're about to try, consider how it could go wrong and think about if you're willing or able to deal with the consequences if you fuck it up.

'Scary' can be good as long as you don't let it rule you or prevent you from trying and retrying something over and over until you learn it.

Think of that as a sixth sense - 'Hey, you've never done <x> before. Stop and think about how to do it slowly, safely and expect to fail and fall down a few times.'

Practice one thing until you get it right and practice it until you can do it instinctively and with that experience will come confidence.

Start with basics like clutch control, how and when to weight and un-weight the suspension, sitting and standing wheelies, - Crosstraining Enduro on youtube has a great playlist of things to practice.

The 500EXC spooked me because it made everything easy to do in such an insidious way, compared to my DRZ it was quiete and it didn't need nearly as much throttle input as I was giving it. I didn't notice that until I was hitting everything at nearly twice the MPH I normally would run on that trail - if something surprised me I wouldn't have time to react or when I inevitably did make a mistake the wreck would be far worse than 'ops i dropped it again kek'

Bro, you're not kidding. I originally intended to get it set up on 17s for street riding, but I figured I would try out the dirt stuff since it's already configured for it. The first time I touched dirt with it, I was thinking, "You're an idiot, and you're going to die." Well, it's owned now, and we'll find out how it goes. When I get the chance to take it out for a real riding session, you guys will be the first to know.

>>
>>28845588
Get a blow torch and heat the lever before attempting to bend it back to shape. Do not use a hammer, use some sort of prybar preferably made of wood so it won't scratch the bike up.

You need heat, majority of levers for bikes are made of cast aluminum which will snap if it's not heated and carefully bent.

Ideally you'd replace it, because the cast aluminum structure is technically compromised but it's still possible to be fixed.

1 tooth in the back is the equivalent of not even half a tooth change up front, so changing the front sprocket to compensate would actually be more of a change than just leaving it as is. And that change is probably not large enough that you'd notice it. However going with the 39 has more accumulative benefits, less weight, quicker acceleration and your RPMs will be slightly higher at a given speed giving a more responsive feel, and you'll be able to move the rear wheel back slightly and increase the wheel base meanly you can accelerate harder before lifting the front wheel. All very minor, but they're a way to rationalise it where as going to 41 isn't going to do much except save you a minute amount of fuel.

They're Exceptional bikes and you could honestly retire on one (Tado Baba rode one into his 80s) however there are 2 important recalls you MUST take care of for your skins sake. High chance they're already taken care of back in the day. There's 2 marks near the right side frame bolt, left mark means fuel line recall was serviced (would expand if extremely high heat) right mark means clutch assembly recall. The original shift shaft was hollow because honda wanted to save more weight and in rare instances would collapse, causing the clutch plates to lock up and gg the transmission.
There are recall kits that remedy this, you will need a clutch basket tool but once done you're solid. Speaking of transmission, fun fact the 929rr has 1 extra dog than the 954rr. 6 dogs vs 5. Honda simplified the design to save more weight but at the cost of a tiny bit less reinforcement. 2nd gear takes a beating on all 954rr's because of this.

Also just so you know the 954 got the updated cam chain tensioner, which the old one on all 929's and some early 954's could occasionally stick if you're at wide open throttle then released to slam closed. Putting one of the updated CCTs or a Solid CCT remedies the Ticking sound you might hear in the top right side of the bike, if you hear ticking down low its probably the flapper valve in the exhaust. Some fireblade owners will gas light you saying it's piston slap but only for super beat bikes (which 1000rr rings fix that) the ticking usually comes from those 2 things.

It might sound like a lot but it's only because I'm listing everything from a lot of research and experience. I could glaze them for hours but you already know it's good.
