I was wondering what the expected costs are to get into riding a street bike (in California)? I was expecting $3500 for a used 250-650cc bike, ~$400 in gear, and maybe $450 in DMV fees and a safety course – are these reasonable or are there things I’m missing? I’m going for under $5000 if possible. I was also wondering what the time costs would be (especially for a used bike) for maintenance. I was looking at Honda rebel 300, Kawasaki ninja 300, and Suzuki dr650 if that helps. For others that have already gone through this process, is/was it worth it to get something like a Kawasaki z125 for learning/reliability/maintenance? I plan to drive like 90% city 10% freeway. Thanks for the help, autonons
Fixed that for ya
You should get a scooter instead and treat it like a street bike. You'll have more fun.
>>28843834>~$400 in gear$400 for a helmet, boots, gloves, jacket, pants? maybe if you get lucky finding some good secondhand stuffGet a $100 helmet and $50 gloves and take a MSF class (prices vary wildly depending on location, anywhere from $100-300). THEN decide if you want to keep riding. You'll want to upgrade the helmet and gloves at that point.
>>28843846You don't need any of that. No one can stop you from riding naked.
>>28843834time cost isn't too bad, though it depends, some bikes are quicker/easier to work on than others. fairings are a pain to remove every time you want to work on the engine, and some bikes are just laid out (fewer things to pull off to get to what you need or more space to work on them)
>>28843845I was thinking about it, but it seems like its more worth it to get a bike since an m1 covers both and I'd like to do freeway - definitely considering it just for the cost and city driving
>>28843843Fuck, my sides
>>28843846sorry, should have noted I ride dirt bike trails so I have a decent jacket, boots, and gloves already (will get more street-normal gear down the line). The MSF classes near me are all around $400 (California is gay and retarded), but definitely want to get a feel for street riding before going through with getting a bike
>>28843855I really like the idea of scramblers and dual sports for this reason, the Ducati scramblers look great, but realistically I'd just use my dirt bike for any off-roading.
>>28843843kek most people I know that regularly ride have either been hit or know people that have
>>28843834Id spend the majority of that gear budget on a nice comfy ece/snell helmet. You can find good secondhand gear at thrift stores, goodwill even has an online site.My first bike was a BMW K100 I got for 900 and rode it for half a year before I decided I hated beating it up every time I dropped it.Second, and current, bike is a KLR I for for 1700 a lot more work needed but you can keep bike budget really low as long as you lookout and don't get a complete lemon.I highly recommend getting a bike with abs.
>>28843834Leave the state for that crapJust buy a bike and rideWhat everyone I know did including myselfStill dont have endorsement just bought a Kawasaki 900 vulcan classic lt
>>28843886You can take a 150cc on the highway. It won't be safe but neither is going 140 in a 55.
>>28843843lost
>>28843834its true because the only time ive ever had someone mention my bike was old guys outside of gas stations. i have a fjr so yeah its like old man nip but still
