Also, even "good" AS or A/T tires might do OK with snow but they're fucking lethal on ice, I moved up north last year and had Wildpeak AT3Ws on my truck for the first winter here and they were scary as fuck on icy days, so this year I got Blizzaks and they're absolutely night and day.

We did get a pretty good icing with snow on top which was slick as hell and I did wish I had dedicated tires then but in regular snow, they had a ton of grip. My take is they're better than the usual all terrains, way better than all seasons, but not as good as dedicated winters. Since I live in Virginia, I just made the compromise that I might have a little rough time on a single shit storm and good every other time which is what we usually get.

People were sliding all over the place while I just felt like I was driving in the rain. I think maybe the wide gaps between tread blocks clear the slush well. The Blizzaks I have this year BTFO the A/Ts in every other kind of winter condition though.
