Explain why stop start is bad
>>28845671Using a Prius as the example is dumb.Hybrids have electric motors to get going from a dead stop. It's the gas only cars with auto start stop that are annoying.

>>28845921i don't think it's really good or bad. ultimately it is rather insignificant in terms of things that would significantly increase fuel economy or lower energy consumption costs.what i think the political framing of this is about, though, is US elites wanting to get off the fuel efficiency angle because of the fracking boom and Chinese dominance in rare earths.end use American consumers don't really stand to see any benefit outside of i guess financially secure people who don't care about running costs. sort of the same crossover as the "no taxes on boats" stunt going on in south carolina right now.in a capitalist economy where these natural resources and their refining infrastructure are privately held, individual households are net oil importers. it's not "your" oil.

They’ll just move on to the next boogieman. >>28845685The Prius is one of the best vehicles ever made. I mean they were slow (past tense), but they absolutely excelled at what they were designed for. I haven't been in the newest gen though and maybe it's better but I kinda doubt it, they didn't fix the ergos on the new Tacoma.

>auto stop gets auto sloppottery
>>28846944I'm not seeing many anons defending it, and I assume the ones that are are /n/fags.That pic describes this board very well.
Start-stop is fine in manual cars, where it only turns off the engine when you put it in neutral and release the clutch (provided it doesn't do it when AC is on). It's also obviously fine in hybrids that take off with electric motors and the gas engine bump starts itself at 8 mph. It's only really bad in pure ICE automatic cars.
>>28846952The only manual I've driven with it was a friend's Focus RS, once, but I thought it was even worse in that than an auto. Totally fucked up my timing when starting from a light.

I've only seen them talk about stop startare they doing that thing again where they champion a half-good action and avoid doing anything with impact(safety, emissions)
>>28847697>are they doing that thing again where they champion a half-good action and avoid doing anything with impactYes. They see the tides and know that 99% of Americans want to see this gone. It's a clear desperation move and distraction, but one I'm not going to necessarily complain about.

>>28845671Why would the government get involved in a fucking consumer option anyway? fuck are they distracting from now?
>>28847721Well, they don't want you to know that their goons have retreated from Minnesota, and also why are you asking what they're distracting you from when the Dow is over 50,000?
>>28847746>why are you asking what they're distracting you from when the Dow is over 50,000$39,000,000,000,000 in national debt, over 2x what the next country (with 4-5x the population) has. >>28845671I don't get it.
>>28846664Nigger do you not remember the unintended acceleration fiasco? And don't say it's from floor mats, that's bs the company pushed to avoid liability, it was an electrical issue. Plus the Prius has had 33 recalls during its production run.
>>28845801Listen retard, it's the feminine nagging of the system. If I could go into the settings and turn it on or off and have it remember the choice I wouldn't care. But it disrespects you. It turns back on every single key cycle, to nag you. My vehicle my choice. It's like so much shit in tech now where it'll nag you and the options are "yes" and "remind me later". how about fuck off and die, where's that option? Where's the "I own this fucking thing so I decide what gets done, not the machine telling me what to do" optionThis modern feminist nanny state needs to burn
>>28847721>government gets involved in consumer options by implementing standards that cause auto stop start to be a required thing>midwit silence>government gets rid of the standard so automakers don't have to include auto stop start if they don't want to>midwit: "why is government interfering"

>>28847820Was there any evidence, at all, that that was real and not just a trend desperate suicidal fraudsters could hop onto? I'm serious. I see zero evidence.
>>28847884There was a professor on a Dateline NBC segment that showed it was electrical. He had a breakout box for all the wires going to the ECU and shorting two of them together would make it go full throttle every time. They had the presenter driving the Toyota in a parking lot with the guy in the passenger seat with the box in his lap and he was replicating the issue on demand.
>>28847880Women buy 85% of new cars and that's why companies treat everyone like mentally retarded cattle
>>28847944that's fucking retarded and obviously not the real cause of the issues because why would wires wrapped in a harness short on each other?reminds me of the time 60 minutes hooked up a laptop with diag software to a 2014 Cherokee and when they ran a pcm dump the whole car shut off in mid-drive which the software EXPLICITLY WARNS YOU NOT TO DO BECAUSE THAT WILL HAPPENthey then claimed that "hackers" could "disable" your vehicle which forced Chrysler to start locking their ECUs and adding a BCM security gateway that refuses programming over OBD. now anyone with a 2015+my Chrysler has to open up their PCM, hook it to a debug console and flip a single bit -- or pay a company do it -- to have the privilege to tune their vehicle. anyone with a 2018+ has to buy a second OBD port and a gateway bypass module, and splice it into the trunk TIPM harness before even the unlocked PCM will accept new programming.it's all anti-consumer faggotry lead by the media jews who want to see small companies like hptuners and the shops that use their stuff fail
>>28847961Wires get damaged on cars and short out all the time, what are you talking about? And yeah, there's definitely also a problem with the coding or circuit logic because no combination of wires shorting should ever make the car go full throttle. Though a simple cable actuated throttle would also prevent it
>>28847977while i don't know how toyota does it a TPP sensor is typically 5v, typically has two output channels that have to agree and the likelihood of both wires in the bundle shorting to ground is extremely low, shorting to a 5v source is even lower.of course if you break out all the wires and start crossing them like you're trying to steal the car weird shit will occur, but under normal circumstances there is basically no chance the unintended acceleration could occur for an electrical reason. now, could Toyota 's pcms simply be ignoring the second TPP channel and only one output shorted? possibly, but again super unlikely because wires in a car harness are bundled together to keep them from rubbing on each other or the car's body, and the tpp shorting to ground is way more voltage than the sensor typically sees. i don't buy that there was ever a manufacturer defect, it was mostly clueless brainlets getting the pedal stuck under a mat or typical american car owner trash on the floor. the fact that most of these scenarios happened in similar regions and only, apparently, to Priuses and vehicles based on the Prius tells me that the problem existed between the wheel and the seat.
>>28847961It's not necessarily that the wire shielding was failing and they were shorting to each other, the short may have been in the plug ends or on the circuit board in the ecu.
>>28845671>glass cokewish we still made those here
will they actually do somehting based like roll back diesel emissions requirements?
>>28848003The one I'll give you was absolutely a problem between the steering wheel and seat was the GM ignition recall. >>28847820>>28847884>>28847961lmao, they found it not possible, except for this gem>However, on October 24, 2013, a jury ruled against Toyota and found that unintended acceleration could have been caused due to deficiencies in the drive-by-wire throttle system or Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS). Michael Barr of the Barr Group testified[30] that NASA had not been able to complete its examination of Toyota's ETCS and that Toyota did not follow best practices for real time life-critical software, and that a single bit flip which can be caused by cosmic rays could cause unintended acceleration. they fucking blamed it on cosmic rays, and yeah, technically, a cosmic ray of radiation from the sun COULD hit the perfect spot, on a moving vehicle, to flip a SINGLE bit on a chip out of literally hundreds of thousands of bits on a space the size of the head of a pin. well maybe, nasa didnt test this because its fucking stupid, but since they didnt test it, it was "possible">He had a breakout box for all the wires going to the ECU and shorting two of them together would make it go full throttle every timelmao. like, yeah, if you made a "break out box" for a car battery which was just a spanner going across the two terminals, it would short as well. gasp.
