Is it retarded to drive on 13 year old tires despite them being hardly used and stored indoors the entire time?
>>
Tires age, like you.

But I am bot
>>
>>28845977
So they're prime
>>
>>28845983
You should wait until your tyres are over 18 to ride them.
>>
>>28845970
Tire age is a bigger indicator of life than the tread depth.
Those tires probably have one third the grip that they did new.

You probably won't die with a few short trips. but suddenly a kid walks out in front of you or some brown person cuts you off and you don't have the breaking distance to avoid a crash.
>>
>>28845989
So grip is more of a concern than something like a tire blowout? I understand the rubber compound hardens over time and reduces performance but will these be literal timebombs if I drive the car on weekends?

well 13 is certainly a prime number

If you don't haul either shit or ass, no. You'll be fine.

I've done 110 on 7 year old Michelins with longitudinal dry rot cracks in the tread. I've commuted for 8 months on idks with truly big ass dry rot cracks around the inner sidewalls. I've ridden a bike at 150 on the belt. I've also done 150 on an improperly inserted rope plug. If the worrywarts were right, I should have a catastrophic failure or two under my belt. But the reality is, the United States Department of Transportation has made selling any actual bad tires very illegal in the wake of the Ford Firestone mix up. When's the last time you even heard of somebody having a blowout? Picrel is the bike I rode for 1.5 seasons with a 11 year old Shinko front.

You'll be fine.
>>
>>28846019
You'll be fine, just listen to the anonymous poster on 4chan/o/, it's not like you're risking your life for $400.
>>
>>28846004
I doubt they'd explode.
But the grip is gonna be shit.
Like under steering into a curb bad.

There are cheaper tires from General that would be a huge improvement for not much money.
Old tires are a gamble with your life.
Or a $50,000 insurance bill after you rear end any modern truck and exceed your insurance coverage.
>>
>>28845970
Nope even recycling it at a plant costs money you're fucked m8 if car is a deprecating asset tires are deprecating assets multiplied by like x5. Yep when you buy tires USE THEM just looking at them causes them to rot m8 the things fucked it's all dry man you really fucked up with that shit it's crapped big time OP.
>>
>>28846023
??? He decided to ask us. If you're going to make an ad hominem argument, christ mate you've got to do better than that.
>>
>>28846004
>blowout
Unlikely.
Even for agriculture and machine equipment its more about the fact there could be heavy abuse and 2-3 years until somebody checks them again.

For daily driving you can keep on going until you get annoyed over the braking performance, or hydroplaning once they start wearing.
If the dimension is common, you could see if its possible to get a set of used spares that is 1-3 years old, and ignore the problem another decade.
>>
>>28845970
if it were me, I would double check my spare is inflated and jack is in working order then drive the tred off of them.
if it were my wife in the car she drives my kid around in, I would replace them before end of business today
>>
>>28846069
They're going on a panther body, so braking and overall handling is already an afterthought for this car, but it's probably worth it to not drive the shit out of the car with sketchy tires for the time being
>>
Send it op.
Poorfags drive on 20 year old mismatched tires over massive potholes all day.
And then there are those tags with their matching vin cars on original tires going to cars and coffee a few times per year.

You'll be fine. Just don't go over 80mph
>>
>>28845970
Yes my 80hp shit box on 9 year old tires would spin the wheels with the lightest throttle inputs. That shouldn't happen. Driving in any rain was sketch as fuck. Just get a decent set of all seasons from a known brand for $400-$500.
>>
>>28846096
I live in canuckistan and a set of all season tires from a reputable brand run about $300 each, if I drive it sparingly I'm hoping to make it through the summer without dropping $1200 on tires. Thankfully this isn't my daily
>>
who gives a shit? if they hold air and it never snows then fuck it.
>>
>>28845970
Guess for 13 years old they do look in remarkable condition without noticeable cracking or dryness
>>
>>28846107
I have 20y/o tires on my 4x4... if they're not cracked or dryrotted I would drive on yours too, just have to be a bit more careful in the rain.
>>
>>28845970
My corvette is running 10 year old tires and I've still gone through rain on mountain passes without a slip.
>>
>>28846149
No Corvette owner has ever driven their car more than 5 under the limit, so tires really don't matter.
>>
>>28846156
I've cracked 130 on the highway and have done a "9 hour" drive in under 7 with a stop for lunch.
>>
>>28845970
It's possible they could have dry rot.
But if they don't look dry and crusty it's probably ok.
You might want to have a look at the inside of them, too though.
>>
>>28846004
old tires start to delaminate
picrel is an extreme example, it can manifest as lots of smaller bumps
look at your tires straight on like this, you'll probably see that they're uneven
this will lead to a blowout and there's no telling exactly when
>>
>>28846019
The last time I heard of somebody having a blowout was 2018 when I met them in the Aussie desert. Somebody had told them the dirt highway would be smoother if they sped up to 130 (~80mph), so they did, and their tiny econobox cuckwagon with its tiny suspension had a blowout.
So did my mum later on the same road, she hit a stone so hard she smasheda hole in the rim.

>130
Congratulations on being slower than a 150HP Jetta.
>>
>>28846486
Car can go 165ish but I don't want to get GG'd by a deer stepping into the road.
Also that Jetta red lines at about 125.
Do you want to try replying with an even dumber post or are you going to flake out on replying and fuck off?
>>
>>28846524
>redlines at 125
Not even close.
0.67 6th gear. 3.88 axle ratio. 25 inch tires. 5800 RPM redline. Means redline wouldn't come until 165MPH.
Max HP is at 5000RPM which would be 143MPH.
It can't do 143. It will do a hair over 130.
>>
>>28846486
That car is governed at 126 MPH
>>
yes, it is retarded. fucking buy new tires already, moron. stop risking stupid shit.
>>
>>28845970
It might be okay to keep it under 35mph and short distances a few times. Definitely don't take it on the highway or any curvy faster two lane roads. They're completely untrustworthy.
>>
>>28846536
That's the Mk6.
>>
>>28846529
Cars like that have a speed limiter on them anon
Usually tire limited or driveline.
See V6 mustanges with limiters removed sending driveshafts to Valhalla
>>
>>28846549
MK7 is the same way
>>
>>28845970
Find out yourself.
>>
>>28845970
new tires are 300-400 eurobux
this should answer your question
>>
>>28845970
Yes. Next question?
>>
>>28845970
Probably.
If I was broke I would do it.
>>
>>28846544
I feel like the people who the dumbest shit are poor so they risk it
>>
>>28846600
And the Mk5 will break 130.

That the Mk6 and Mk7 need to be governed to 126 speaks to its ability to go faster.
>>
>>28845970
Yeah. When I bought my corvette it had 15 year old tires on it. The traction was abysmal. They were pretty good continentals too, not chinko all seasons. It would slide and spin the tires so easily it was like the engine was supercharged. I put new summer tires on it and it completely changed the driving experience. I could go full throttle in 3rd gear with zero tire spin, I could attack corners at twice the speed, ABS went from regularly activating when I'd brake hard to never once activating since. It was fun sliding around, but if I had to panic stop I would have been FUCKED.
