Should I buy a used 2012 Volvo s60 with 70,000 miles? The car is from Florida and it had only 1 owner.

The seller is asking $7500, but I think that is too high considering the age and maintenance costs.

I know that Volvo recommends that the timing belt and water pump be replaced every 10 years or 100k miles. That will cost about $1,500. There will probably be another $500 of random stuff to fix.

I would be afraid to buy a car from Florida considering the amount of flooding and humidity there.

What about buying the same make and model from NY or NJ? Those states have humid summers and also snow in the winter. Volvos seem to be very resistant to corrosion because they are designed to be used in the snow.

Does humidity fuck up Volvos since they are designed in Scandinavia, and Scandinavia has low humidity?

Cost can vary greatly depending on the engine and trim level, if it's $7500 and either a D5 SE Lux or a T6, I'd say that's good value - bearing in mind that Volvos are typically pretty durable and you shouldn't have too many mileage related issues.

I bought a 2011 S60 D5 SE Lux with 163k miles for $2700 last month, the only major fault in the service history was one of the shocks failed, no major engine issues whatsoever.

Nice. Maybe I should just go for one of the cheaper high mileage ones. Are you pay whatever it costs to maintain it long-term, or are you just going to drive it until it has a catastrophic failure?

***are you planning to pay...

I plan to keep it alive as long as is feasible, even if that means expensive repairs and restorations.

I have a bit of personal history with the S60 - I used to work at a Volvo dealership around 2015-2017, had this one used Gold S60 SE Lux with all the optional trim that I used to love, sold it to a young family, watching them drive it away was a bittersweet moment, and one of the real stand-out moments in my career.

I bought this S60 not because of the price, but because the interior was in great condition and it was the exact trim level as the one I sold back in the day. It was cheaper than average as it'd been off the road for more than a year.

Higher mileage shouldn't be an issue, but what are you looking for in a car? Are you just looking for a safe comfortable daily driver or something more specific?

If you plan to keep it a few years and then upgrade, one with over 100k miles and the timing belt already sorted should be totally fine. You'll save money both on buying the car and replacing the belt, if it's a Diesel especially, these Volvo engines can do well over 300k.

I'm looking for something that looks good (that rules out Asian and American cars), has good acceleration, has good handling, has a luxurious interior, and is reliable.

Based on what you've told me, I'll probably go with a high mileage one. But how will I know if the timing belt was actually replaced? Couldn't the seller just tell me it was replaced even though it wasn't?

I'd go for a D5 SE Lux like me then, accelerates 0-60 in about 7.2 seconds and has a 2.4lr Inline 5 with a twin turbo.

There are 3 trim levels, Standard, R-Design (Sporty) and SE Lux (Luxurious). SE Lux includes very comfortable leather seats and a good sound system as standard, and plenty of optional add-ons.

The seller should always be more than happy to provide the service history on request, which will tell you whether the timing belt has been changed or not - it's very easy to discover that they're lying if they say it's been changed in the ad. Most people won't lie, but always double check. If they can't provide full service history, walk away, unless you've made friends with a local mechanic and brought them along.

Happy to answer any other questions if you have more, I used to sell these.

Thanks, it seems that all of the S80's near me are the base model or the T6, so I'll try to get a T6.

>but I think that is too high
Oh too bad, you probably cant afford it homie
That price is right on the button or a good deal, depending on one's perspective
$7500 for that car with that mileage is in no way shape or form overpriced
Try craigslist
Youll find something you can stand to drive, who knows you may like it

What do you think about an S80 T6 that had its engine rebuilt under warranty at 75,000 miles? It currently has about 115,000 miles, and it's being offered at a pretty good discount.

I'm thinking that I won't have to spend $1500 to replace the timing belt, because the engine was rebuilt at 75,000 miles. On the other hand, I thought that the warranty only covered up to 50,000 miles, so maybe the seller is being dishonest.

Disregard this post. It's actually an S60 T6.

Sorry for slow reply.

For a rebuilt / refurb, you'll definitely need a mechanic to appraise it before purchase.

If its in another state, hire a local mechanic to take a look, it's pretty normal when buying used cars from private sellers, should cost a couple hundred dollars but it'll save you the worry and cost later on if the rebuild is cheap and they haven't changed the timing belt etc.

I have a 15 year-old S60, 250k kilometres. I don't have the full service history but from what I know the only major thing it has needed was a new fuel pump.

I've narrowed down my search to the S80 from 2007 to 2012. I'm OK with the 3.2, T6 or V8, as long as the mileage is low and the price is good. I'm targeting $3,000 for a 3.2, $4,000 for a T6 or $5,000 for a V8 (those numbers might be unrealistic). I really want one with a walnut steering wheel, but those are harder to find.
