2nd week of living in a truck with my trainer. Starting to think suicide was the better option.

Never have I worked so hard and received so little in return.
>>

I knew team driving wouldn’t work well for me, but I had no idea how bad it would be until I started training. I never got used to sleeping in a moving truck, so I ended up becoming more grateful that I signed up to do solo trucking, once that was over.

There were 0 spots left in the 100 spot parking lot at 8:30 AM on a Saturday and I was running out of time so I had to park second row in the back and now I'll have to spend the whole fucking weekend wondering if the cops are gonna fuck me

Couldn’t you just… crawl to a spot when it becomes available, or do you work for a company that has the ELD set so that you immediately go into Driving with the slightest forward/backward movement?

While I understand why construction zones, and some places like certain areas of I-70 in Indiana, will have trucks use the left lane, I’ve never figured out the proper etiquette for what to do when other trucks want to pass you.
Should you stay in the left lane or move over to the right lane? Staying in the left lane ensures you are continuing to obey road signs, but passing on the right lane is dangerous, so is it the passer’s or the pass-ee’s responsibility to ensure that overtaking is done as safely as possible?
>>
>>28853798
The legal answer is that they shouldn't be passing since the law is Trucks Use Left Lane not Trucks Use Left Lane If They Feel Like It.

More pragmatic answer is Maintain Your Lane. If they want to pass that's their problem, not yours. If you move and anything happens it'll all be on you because you weren't in the proper lane.

I think the trucking industry is being infested by shit people who are shit drivers. I'm glad there's some of you fags still around though.
>>
>>28853842
I don’t trust four wheelers to tell me it’s safe to move over. If I move over when you indicate I can, it just means you’re going to disappear behind my trailer and I cannot have that.
>>
>>28853854
Fair point.
I guess I do it cuz I spend so much time in my mirrors and it does help. I also like a safe distance, but I get why you say that.

thank you for flashing your brights while im looking directly at your front bumper, us truckers famously have no idea where the rear of our trailers are and need you to flash us. next time you do that ill do more than tap my brakes and the next thing youll see is me pulling your ass out if your truck and slamming your face against your glass panes :)
>>
I’ve been trucking for almost a year, now, and 45 degree backing hasn’t been an issue for me, for quite some time. Current account I’m on requires me to set up for straight line backing, at times, which I’m getting better at by figuring out when and how much to steer in order to be perfectly lined up with the dock I’m try to back into. I still need to work on blind side backing but I’m able to work on that, as well, at certain places.

I’ve still never attempted 90 degree backing. I don’t why but I better work on that, since I strive to master the skills I’ve acquired. Perhaps start by backing into areas with several open spots in a row and go off from there.
>>
>>28854249
Why would I flash my brights at you anon? I can flash my lights by flipping my headlights to DRL and back.
You seem upset, calm your tits.
>>
>>28854372
>Perhaps start by backing into areas with several open spots in a row and go off from there.
Just so's you know, that doesn't work that well. It's a known thing that you can hit a tight dock like it's nothing but when you've got room to fuck up you can't hit the spot to save your life.
>>
>>28854549
I know, but it’s more for “calibration” thing, so I will be able to see where the trailer goes. I’ll have to do it several times based on where the tandems are set, so I will know how to set myself up for backing.
>>
>>28853545
It's mainly the fact that my trainer is a fucking retard who throws toddler temper tantrums at the slightest inconvenience, English is his second language, and is generally insufferable to be around. He makes everything harder. Eceryohas to be a fiasco with this lunchmeat brained asswipe
>>
>>28854611
Oh, damn, it’s that bad, huh? I guess I was one of the lucky few in my mega/terminal who had a decent trainer, based on what my fellow new drivers have said. He was concise with what he wanted me to do and how to do it, he was very safety-conscious, and he never got impatient with me – I try to be humble about everything, since anyone can fuck up, but I like to believe I’m only a handful of drivers who are potentially good at truck driving, so I think my ability to produce results quickly made things easier for my trainer, that month. The only things I didn’t really like was his smoking, since I’m a non-smoker, and I just wasn’t thrilled with the team driving aspect of it all, as mentioned before.
>>
My trainer had a dedicated account so I slept in a hotel every night, which sounds awesome, except my company was horribly incompetent at keeping the hotel booking maintained so I ended up getting kicked out of my room several times during training and had to live inside peoples assholes while driving all day to make sure all my shit didn't get thrown out onto the street before I got back. Went through the exact same shit when I was down for two weeks for warranty recall repairs. I'm beyond certain I would've probably gone to jail or prison if I had to live in a sleeper cab with a rando for a month and that's exactly why I'll never be a trainer for anyone unless I have a dedicated account and they'll be in a hotel room every night.

My trainer was awesome though and was a true mentor in every sense of the word. I still stay in touch with him and when I'm in his part of the country we go get food and drinks and talk shit the entire time about the companies we're currently working for. He hates cubans so much it is unreal, he talks about his family killing them back in the day like a fat bastard at the bar talking about their football team winning the superbowl and he called me a faggot for not wanting to say nigger in front of him because I was worried he would be offended. We even hotswapped one time towards the end of my training which was pretty cool and frankly if you're both not retarded you can totally do that without issue. I love that motherfucker. But yeah, trucking is very similar to the military, 90% of the time you could be a braindead troglodyte and do it and 5% of the time you have to actually think and 5% of the time it's so stressful that suicide and/or homicide seem like viable solutions and it will take everything in you to not follow through with one or both of them. Welcome to hell, get out of non-hazmat dryvan as soon as possible and leave that shit to the jeets.
>>
Nothing like strong gusts of wind to rock you to sleep, in your truck.
>>
>>28854639
Yeah I'm with Stevens who mainly seems to employ mentally impaired people for drivers as far as I can tell
>>
For example right now we're stopped at a Walmart and he had another meltdown simply parking, whining about "oh they're going to kick us out!!" told me to get in and out fast, which I fucking did, spent no more than ten minutes in there, missed a bunch of shit I needed to buy because of that, and here I am 30 minutes later sitting in the truck alone waiting for his retarded ass. I fucking hate this asshole. I think he might actually be mildly mentally retarded.

Federal rules are four hours bottle to throttle or until sober. Realistically you shouldn't be driving until it's been long enough to be at 0.00000 BAC and realistically it should be at least a day between your last drink and when you start driving. I'll occasionally have one tallboy before taking a 10 if it's been a particularly shitty day but otherwise I don't drink while OTR and if I do I get a motel room for the night to sleep it off before going back to the truck.

>>
>>28859435
Truckers err on the side of safety, as professional drivers trained to operate a 40-ton vehicle, so anything we do as a courtesy to other drivers/riders is done to reduce the chances of an accident occurring. We’re monitored closely by the Department of Transportation, so if anything happens on the road and a semi truck is involved, law enforcement is going to see how the trucker got involved.

I have worked in retail and manufacturing for many years and have nothing to show for it. I always imagined how much better it would be to be doing lots of road trips across the country, seeing great scenery, sort of an adventure every day by being a truck driver. Researching it, I have found that most drivers hate it and there's a million things that suck about it, the worst being dealing with receivers and getting unloaded as well as finding a peaceful/quiet place to park for the night to sleep. I also hear a lot about fuel island drama with truckers pulling pins and fighting, sometimes even with a knife or gun and some end up dead that way.
Is it better to stick to dead end retail these days or is it worth it to get out there anymore?

Anything can happen anytime, anywhere, regardless of profession. I’ve only been trucking for almost a year, now, and I haven’t had/witnessed any drama amongst other truck drivers, but I also avoid other people whenever possible. Have I dealt with long waiting times because some shithead decided to take a shit without pulling forward after fueling? Sure, but I just let it be. I’m just a company driver who will get paid after delivering a load (after the pay period that is), so there’s no point in me picking fights with other people. Also, only fucktards do not check their fifth wheel after returning to their truck or during their pretrip.
Will other aspects in trucking be stressful? Of course it will be, from four wheelers and other truckers on the road, to shippers/consignees taking forever to (un)load you, to dispatch either not responding to your messages or not giving you the proper load numbers to pick up the load. At the end of the day, it’s up to you, the driver, to decide if you should let the stress from that get to you.
The best thing you can do is roll with the punches and realize that all of this are just bumps on the road… and the road is I-24 between Nashville, TN and Oak Grove, KY… or I-70 in Indiana.
If you start off doing OTR for a carrier, you’re going to start off with shitty pay, but the benefit is you will be sent around the country and see different scenic places that will make OTR worth it.

Fuck, I miss doing OTR now, but I was only earning 46 cpm. Being on a dedicated account gives you higher pay and more predictable routes, but you’re stuck in one region.
>>
>>28860784
Why do Americans use these monstrosities instead of flat cabin trucks? That thing would be literal hell to maneuver through a parking lot in Europe, you would get stuck at the first rastplatz you enter past 6PM.
>>
>>28860811
Roads are larger in America, so once length restrictions got lifted in the 1970s, truckers switched from cabovers to long nose trucks due to their longer wheelbase, making rides smoother and maintenance easier. Class 8 cabovers ended production in the early 2000s.
>>
>>28854098
Incorrect. You can move up to 29 seconds per minute if you manually set rest mode each time you stop, because tacos have a temporal resolution of 60 seconds.
>>
>>28860886
I guess you can if you time the last tick? But I wouldn't risk it.
>>
>>28860889
You can simply drive ten or twenty seconds, rest a minute, and repeat. It's a really long time to drive when you only have to maneuver around a parking lot.
This also works when you're stuck in traffic to rest 15 minutes, sometimes.

It's really funny, guys think nosing in is smart when the first start usually but then stop doing it when an idiot says it means they can't park. Then they get hit in a parking lot or see someone get hit right next to them in a parking lot, and they start doing it again because that fucking sucks to have happen as is way more likely than anyone ever thinks until it happens to them or right next to them.

If you can nose in safely and get out safely after doing it, you should nose in. Way quieter and safer that way. Only thing better would be a pull through spot in a big ass lot but those are rare.
>>28862519
>>28862527
Oof. I figured you meant in a parking lot. I've yet to be hit on the road but I've had some close calls. The temptation to maintain my lane so that retard dies would be immense desu. Hell maybe if I'm lucky it takes me too.
>>
>>28862554
I think they stop nosing in after they figure out that they can't back out in the morning because someone creatively parked and now they don't have the room to maneuver. Besides, most truck stops only have less than 10 spots where backing out would be possible in the morning and those are all taken by 4pm. With only 2 of those being placed such that they can't be blocked without blocking the entire aisle (which still happens occasionally).
>>
>>28863261
Yeah but the solution is simple, you just knock on their door and ask them to move. If they're an asshole about it you just tell the truck stop and then they either send security to go knock and tell them to move or they call a tow truck that tells them to move and if they still don't move they get to go to jail. And you just tell dispatch what's going on and send pictures and it's not your problem.

Besides, every single time I've seen someone creatively park like an asshole blocking traffic it's been a turdie shitbird that's too fucking stupid to live and watching them get harassed by pigs is hilarious every single time.
>>
I keep lowering my expectations with four wheelers and they still make me expect too much from them!

>>
Why do you guys insist on trying to pass each other on 2 lane highways and basically stagnate traffic until one of you either wins the race or concedes and goes back to going back to being behind the truck you were trying to pass?
>>
>>28865957
>major truck stop chain
>rewards program with free shower credits after fueling 55 gallons
>easy-to-use app for accessing your rewards, paying for fuel, and purchasing showers
>relatively clean facilities compared to other major truck stop chains
Trust me, there’s a similar situation occurring near the place I operate from, so I get it. There’s a small mom and pop truck stop that rarely fills up because there’s a small Love’s (50 parking spots) across the street, which becomes overcrowded overnight because it’s such a popular truck stop chain.
>>
>>28865970
I try to avoid this situation, when I’m passing, and will drop my speed by 2-10 mph (depending on traffic), if I’m being passed.
Most trucks are governed to a certain speed, somewhere between 60 and 70 mph, but it depends on the carrier, so the faster driver will usually try to overtake the slower driver, even if there’s a 3-mph difference in their top speed.
The geography and how much the truck weighs also plays a crucial part in why trucks will try to pass each other – trucks that are deadheading or lightly loaded will try to pass slower trucks going up hills, and heavier/fully-loaded trucks will try to pass other trucks going down hills, while also only going fast enough to continue maintaining control of the truck.
The reason why trucks try to pass one another is the same reason why everyone else tries to pass each other – it’s just more noticeable with semis due to the larger size and slower speed, compared to four wheelers. We all want to reach our destinations as soon as possible because it’s psychologically rewarding.
>>
>>28866145
>it’s such a popular truck stop chain
It's popular because it gives fuel price breaks to fleets. That, in turn, means the drivers have their shower credits there and not at the mom 'n pop place across the street. Same story for the other big chain truck stops and also why the little guys can't compete.
>>
I don't understand why this pays so little and demands such ridiculous hours when it's literally essential to the functioning of our nation.
>>
>>28866256
It really is insane, I worked in the industry from the white collar end of things. The issue is desperate truckers trying to find loads, shippers looking for the cheapest prices and brokers who absolutely don't care who is driving the load as long as it makes them a profit. Being a company driver makes more sense than getting your own authority unless you really know what you're doing. Fucking miserable industry

>>
>>28866256
It's only really bad your first year. After that you go somewhere that won't treat you like a rented mooncricket fleshlight. It'll never get any better because nobody has the balls to kick turdies out, not even trump and duffy for all their blustering, because that would make the price of everything to up and cattle would be big mad and might start demanding higher wages across the board. Honestly if I didn't get paid to play videogames in my bunk I wouldn't do this job anymore.
>>
>>28866256
being a company slave hasnt been too bad for me, only real shitty part is you cant get in contact with dispatch or driver services unless you want to be on hold for a hour. ill probably stick around after the "first year" but if it doesnt get any better ill look elsewhere, probably local or government. having back to back live loads and unloads is particularly frustrating bc then 1/4 of the time youre sitting around waiting not making money waiting for appts

They're where I plan on going after I finish my first year with this fucked up retard company I'm currently with.
>>
>>28870095
Is Prime really that bad?
>>
>>28870158

It is now, used to not be. I'm on their logistics side and they require us to carry ridiculously high cargo insurance to haul high value freight and then when I get the HV loads they pay like a dollar a mile or maybe 1.50

I ran the week of that bad winter storm in Evanston, went from Marshall, MO to SLC and then from Hyrum UT back to Minneapolis, drove through a white out blizzard, parked at Little America, then went around the pileup in Evanston, skated on the ice, put my 11 year perfect record on the line, ended up 161 dollars in the red that week.

Decided that's it, no more shitty ass cheap ass Prime freight. Has anyone here hauled Tyson? >>28870095 Crete, I've been to a lot of the same places as those guys. Do they have the scammy CPAP shit Prime does? I have been tested twice for it and passed both times.

>>28869636

I looked at Walmart, they make good money but from what I understand you aren't even allowed to use a headset to BS with friends while driving and that is a huge dealbreaker for OTR. Maybe on a local account.

Is anyone here hauling fuel? I can get my hazmat pretty easy. I already have my N endorsement.

>>28870216
You motherfucker doin this shit again, makin me break my silence with your play pretend.
Either way if youre serious get the hazmat before bothering to even apply every hesitation some HR cunt has puts your chances of getting hired lower and lower, that being said, all the big fuel haulers are hiring and every single one (with very little exception) are exactly the same. Same product same tasks same wages and same shithead dispatchers, you'll have to either get over the no cams or know someone who knows someone cause I know PFJ (tartan) loves (gemini) rutters nittany united refining sheetz and kenan disadvantage all have them i am unsure about sunoco though im told theyre actually respectable to work with but all their loads are proprietary and I haven't had supply from one of their terminals since July so I dont get to talk to em much. I bring home 1500 on a good week at 30/h for ~60 hours certainly room for improvement and im gathering word of mouth from drivers with cargos more expensive than mine, it may be a place to start yourself, otherwise take your resume and set up a stand outside your nearest fuel terminal (may have to slip the operator a couple bucks)
As for box I haven't heard negative things about watsontown trucking company, I see their trucks all over the damn place and per their website they have a terminal in Columbus, I would never join up with walmart cause I dont wanna do the walmart chant
>>
>>28870507
>I would never join up with walmart cause I dont wanna do the walmart chant
I’ve worked closely with Walmart a couple of times and I’ve never seen them do this with their drivers at their transportation office. Some distribution centers seem to pamper their drivers with cookouts and such.
>>
I've always wondered what would it be like if you pulled the parking break while driving? Would it just be instant death?
>>
>>28870596
It would be very painful.
>>
>>28870525
Oh yea on top of the rather great pay they get all kinds of benefits, ive seen from posters during my deliveries; MPG bonuses, fresh continental breakfasts for safe driving streaks, yearly big ticket item drawings (grills tvs other appliances), they host a truck rodeo with its own prizes and rewards for good show and you bet they have cookouts, feels like damn near flip a coin if I deliver to walmart in the summer someone will hand me a hot dog.
Those are just the ones I remember seeing so theres probably more that I dont know about or forgot but they treat their drivers probably best in the industry but they do expect you to prostrate yourself with cameras and little dances and having to work with women. I dont struggle at all to think of how guys get 500k - 2 mil miles workin for walmart like i do for the niggas who stick with megas for years, I want to ask those guys why they did it a couple responses have basically amounted to "i didnt wanna change whats been good to me" lol ok 1 million miles of raped
>>
>>28870596
It's about like hard braking. The spring brakes don't really have the oomph that the service brakes can develop. Don't do it empty though, that trailer be hoppin' then lol.
>>
As an experienced greenhorn, I honestly have no real advice to give to fresh greenhorns, other than common sense, if I’m ever asked to give some. I suppose the most important ones mainly have to do with downhill mountain driving: 1) Slow and steady wins the race, and 2) Do not bypass brake inspection areas, even if you’re deadheading.
>>
Potential truckers should be given a 50-page coloring book, as part of their written exam. If you are unable to color WITHIN the lines, you do not get a CDL.
Dropping a trailer in the lines isn’t fucking hard!

I feel like shit if I ever have to pull a fully-loaded trailer where the tandems HAVE to be slid all the way forward.
>>
>>28872725
That means whoever loaded it wasn't an asshole. I hate pulling a trailer where the tandems have to be as far back as is legal, makes maneuvering a bastard and makes parking take more room and if I'm going into a big shitty I'm pulling over and sliding them forward once I'm sure I'm not passing any more weigh stations.
>>
>>28870158
Prime sucks ass and most of their drivers tend to be retards. That's usually the case at companies that let you have nice trucks and cool paint jobs.
>>28870216
I talked to several of their drivers before giving them my info to pass on to recruiting and from what I heard they do not do that. I mean you do still have to do a physical to get your medical card, and if you're at risk for sleep apnea they may make you do a sleep test, but it sounded like it was the same as the company I'm with currently where as long as your BMI isn't too high and your neck isn't too big and your blood pressure and heart rate aren't dogshit they won't make you do a sleep test. Certainly didn't sound predatory to me.
>>
>>28872787
>That's usually the case at companies that let you have nice trucks and cool paint jobs
Yeah… I do find it odd that Prime allows some of their trucks to look… vibrant. While some megas may have trucks with unique paint jobs, the paint jobs are more conservative and only company colors are used.

I completely understand the need to improve the environment by using alternative fuels but I do not see how electric power can compete with diesel, anytime soon, when it comes to range and work hours. Isn’t still too dangerous to recharge batteries in a short period of time?
>>
>>28873568
Electric makes sense for yard and some local work at the present time. Hybrids like Edisons trucks can do any use case more efficiently than just diesel and you don't have to deal with emissions faggotry either but the entire industry is doing everything they can to kill them off asap and even if they weren't it'll take a decade for them to really get popular. Modern def diesel trucks are going to be the standard for a while yet if not a long while mostly due to inertia but they'll eventually be sunset by hybrids and then full electric, although I'll be retired by the time they have a full electric semi that can realistically compete doing OTR with a modern diesel.

I've noticed that most distribution centers here have really shit opsec. You could probably just show up with random numbers written on a paper, say it's a reference number and the guard would let you in.
>>
>>28874197
IME, it's not in the guardshack's purview as to who gets in most times. They don't know what's getting shipped, they're just there to note who's on property in case of a problem.

Outbound isn't much better security-wise. Mostly just noting what tractor is leaving, sometimes noting with what trailer, and usually not even checking against the BoL. Again this points at their just being there to have a record of who's on property rather than load control when it really should be both but that probably costs more or something.

I was reading a book called Six Frigates which details the shipbuilding industry and political climate which led to the construction of the USN's first six frigates in the 1790's (United States, President, Congress, Constitution, Constellation, and the unlucky runt Chesapeake) and what's funny is that Baltimore had that reputation then too. The Navy didn't want a ship built there but it ended up that that was where Constellation was built.

Unemployed for two years, and have had no luck with getting a job driving. Clean everything, all my endorsements, TWIC card. What gives? I’m down to JB Hunt and Western Express. I want to work, I need to work, but it seems like companies don’t want to hire. They stand to lose basically nothing, and I stand to gain a paycheck and not be homeless. What’s the big deal? I barely have enough to put food in my stomach, let alone on a table.

God I hate greedy brokers. Just a little thing you can do is oif your broker sends you a load see if you can find it on a load board and if it's significantly more than what the broker is offering you for the load tell them you see the load posted and then negotiate from there.
>>
>>28870216
Check out Swift. When I was in the industry, though not as a carrier, they seemed like a decent way to kind of get started and after a couple of years and experience figure out where you want to go from there.
>>
>>28877886
>Unemployed for two years
That's why. In addition to the usual it's-easier-to-get-a-job-if-you-already-have-a-job thing,. trucking has it's own rule set about applicants needing to account for all time not employed and if anybody actually looks at your application they probably doubt that you can at this point. Ostensibly they're trying to avoid drivers trying to hide accidents and firings but it also just happens to weed out jail and rehab time too. Insurers not wanting to cover drivers off the road for more than 6 months without repeating CDL school is becoming a thing too. Add in the down market for trucking and looks like you'll be going to JB Hunt or Western Express for a while. That unemployment will haunt you wherever you go though so figure out how to get something like education or volunteer work or something similar documented. Gotta have documentation. They won't/can't just take your word

>>

>>
>>28877812
Bees would just be a flatbed load and if you're not retarded you'll pay far out the ass to have them moved so you get a professional that won't crash and isn't a doorswinger that won't lollygag in transit long enough for them to decide to leave the hives and migrate. You could theoretically do it with just any flatbedder just like you could theoretically only hire turdies for bottom dollar and not give a fuck about the quality of their work or character, but you shouldn't do that.
>>
>>28877886
If you don't have recent work experience you're a liability for any company and if you don't have recent driving experience you're a lot more expensive to insure. As far as insurance is concerned if it's been more than 6-12 months since you last drove you're a noob all over again regardless how much experience you have.
>>
>>28878249
Canadian trucking is completely fucked and street shittered. Your best bet is to get into something specialized as soon as possible that's harder than just regular trucking with dryvans. The more work it is and the smarter you have to be to do it and not die or kill other people the less percentage of retards you'll encounter. I've seen competent indian drivers that are professional and give a fuck and hate other jeet retards for making them look bad, same way I've seen competent drivers of all colors that hate retards in their own race that make them look bad. You really don't want to do dryvan general freight for more than a year to get the necessary experience. Move to reefer or flatbed or hopper bottom or logging or babby's first heavy haul job. Pull b-trains. Anything but dryvan general freight.
>>
>>28878387
Either chill out and enjoy the cushy job, which is what I would recommend personally, or put the time and effort in to find something more difficult and specialized that's more work and more money. Whatever you do do not go owner op. Fucking terrible time to be an O/O and will be for the rest of this year and most of next.

>>
>>28878567
If you have the ability to look away from the road long enough to look over and down at who you are passing then you are being more dangerous than the phone heads. I can go down the freeway at 20 over the speed limit with my phone in my hand checking the latest on Iran and still be more safe and better for traffic than you jeet retards trying to compete with each other for izzat by blocking an entire lane of freeway.
You are the jeets of the streets homeboy and you're not getting any respect from anybody anymore. Probably give kids lectures who try to get you to blow your horn

I don't need to put the phone down because driving is not a hard thing to do. Your job as a trucker is not hard, that is why you have to compete with jeets that can't even speak English.
Yes Jeethro use this as ammunition in your endless quest for more izzat
>>
>>28878328
I can prove that accidents/rehab/jail etc are a non issue. Just by having my hazmat and TWIC that knocks those arguments down. I’ve been educating myself and studying on my own, so no school to document any coursework so that’s not an option for me. The only thing I could document to show I’ve been doing something is therapy, though that wouldn’t help me in any way, and would just be more of a detriment. Companies don’t care if mommy and daddy weren’t nice. So I guess it’s JB Hunt or Western Express. At least I know the reasoning why now. It makes sense from a financial standpoint, and it completely lacks any soul, so par for the course I suppose.
>>
>>28878671
Of the two I would recommend jb hunt. Pam might also give you a shot as well from what I've heard from their drivers. I drive for the stevie wonder institute for trucking and I can tell you right now they wouldn't even take your application without three years of recent work experience.
>>
>>28878662
you compete with jeets because they're willing to work for peanuts for a lower standard of employment and living because they have never experienced better, and management and execs are more than happy for the big fat bonuses they'll get for "saving" money for the company

Oh fun, that reminds me of Reckitt’s drop yard in Mechanicsburg, PA, but that’s driver side backing. I ended up having to go there during my very first week of solo trucking, last year, and that was a bitch to do! Fortunately, a yard dog ended up pulling a trailer out of a regular spot and I dropped my trailer there, after trying to backing into an angled spot for 30 minutes. I ended up back there, 6 months later, and I had no issue backing my trailer into those spaces – I just used a combination of 45 and 90 degree backing to get the trailer in, in 5-10 minutes.

A month should be the minimum for training. That’s long enough to get used to driving a commercial vehicle and have enough experience to not fuck up on your backing. Everything else, you will learn when the time comes. Just hope that your trainer gets you to back into angled spots every now and then and, hopefully, they actually give a shit about safety – some trainers don’t.

make sure you have a bit of money saved. youll probably need to take time off work to do your school, then once you find a job, you'll need even more time for orientation and otr training with a trainer. this will take a few months.

im going through this right now, but i wont stress it because training is paid anyway

Depends on their fuel contract timing and how long this lasts.

>>
>>28888498
Yeah it depends on how much time you have to make it work. If you're given relatively tight schedules it doesn't work, but if you have a bit of leeway you can work the hours you want. I can get into my groove about 40% of my loads as I usually do 800-1200mi loads with a bit of wiggle room on the times. Thats at 80% live load/unloads to only 20 DnH too so my appt times are usually strict, though maybe I'm just lucky and have a good company

Are lot lizards still common? Thinking about becoming a trucker but also a sexual degenerate and think women wearing skimpy outfits and cruising the Truck stops is hot. Is there any way I can get in trouble just flashing my lights at them or something as they walk into my truck? Im assuming management at most these places is just as sleazy as me and doesnt give a fuck.

>>
>>28887515
You also need to make it a point to tell your trainer to tell their dispatch that the last day of your training with them needs to be spent practicing backing for literally an entire goddamn shift. Specifically 45 degree alley dock both driver and blindside but throw in a few 90's as well. Looking back on it I wouldn't consider someone to be truly ready until they can bang out a driver side 45 degree alleydock in a tight space in ten minutes or less and honestly preferably half that or better.

If you're doing OTR and you're anywhere near any coast or border you're a lazy retarded nigger if you're starting your day any later than 0600 for whatever timezone you're in unless the previous day fucked you because of shit beyond your control, in which case you need to be shutting down that evening no later than 0700 on the dot. I start my day between 3-5am and by start I mean I am rolling no later than 5am, sleeping in is 6am. If you're in the northeast you need to be rolling out by 3am at the absolute latest or you can just accept that you'll be paying for parking and get shit for miles to boot.

To anyone reading this and just starting out, get a prescription for trazadone as soon as possible. Or find some other way to help you sleep that isn't megadosing melatonin.

It's not really the job that's the lonely part. As has been mentioned you will still interact with a decent number of people and you'll be better off if you can do that well than if you can't. The lonely part comes from the inability to have a normal life, it's basically impossible to maintain a relationship if you're OTR unless you and your partner are both insanely committed and flexible and you're never going to get to see your friends or family as much as you want or even need to. You'll spend most of your time interacting with your kids if you have them over videocalls and phonecalls. And even if you say you're only going to do OTR for a year or two until you find something local/regional/dedicated that's still more than enough time to nuke your life outside of the truck and it's going to be incredibly difficult to repair the damage if that's even possible after the fact.

This is a career for people that couldn't hack it in the military and the only other viable options in their life were alcoholism or drugs until suicide or death or literally joining a cult. If that's you, welcome aboard! If that's not, run away as fast as you can. I'm literally shitting in a bucket in my bunk typing this. That is what you have to look forward to.

>you need to be shutting down that evening by no later than 0700
Meant 1900, it's been a long day. Did 608 miles and I'm limited to 63mph.

Also - if you're just starting out, you need to save at least three washer fluid jugs as soon as possible to use as piss jugs and you need to go buy a 5 gallon bucket with a sealing lid, like a paint bucket, as well as two boxes of trash bags both black and white and the biggest box of decent kitty litter you can find along with a pack of paper towels and two cases of dude wipes as well as two packs of shower wipes and some bleach wipes. There will be times when you need to piss or shit in a hurry and you can't make it to a restroom or the restroom is fucking filthy and you will need to be able to handle that in a hygienic manner. If you need to wash your hands in a hurry you can wipe them down with bleach wipes, wait a minute, then dry them off with wet wipes to get the bleach off. The kitty litter will also help if you ever get stuck on ice. All of this shit is non negotiable unless you're a retarded faggot in which case have fun shitting leaning up against a tire on a wide on ramp shoulder.
>>
>>28889668
I'm in my first year and I've shit in a bucket 78 times thus far counting tonight. I hate public restrooms and have IBS. Just be glad I'm not just shitting and pissing in the same bucket and nuking ramp shoulders with doodoo water 3-5 gallons at a time anymore.

It's trucking. There will literally always be a job available if you can piss clean and convince an insurance company or a rich retard that you either won't wreck their shit or that you'll at least do it infrequently enough they'll still end up turning a profit if they hire you, and it is hilariously easy to fake a piss test if you have half a brain so that's not even much of a barrier. As long as you can refrain from touching your phone for several hours at a time any you can drive like you give even half a shit about safety you will never be unemployed with a cdl. The downside is it is a bastard getting an actually good job driving a truck that would allow you to do something like own a home and/or save enough money to retire on passive income before you're basically already dead.

Even with all the recent reforms and the fmcsa and DOT having to act like they care the bar is still in hell.

>>
>>28891305
No, I’m gonna stay for another year or two, for the experience. I’m satisfied with earning $1500/week with the account that I’m currently on, but I may eventually switch to an account that pays less but it will allow me to haul hazmat tanker. If anything happens prematurely with my current account, I have another account I have in mind that does hazmat dry van loads. I’ve been sitting on my hazmat endorsement, since I got it at the same time I was offered this dedicated account.
I haven’t exactly decided on what I want to move forward to. I may go back to my previous employer and haul commercial loads to auto parts stores, since I’ll have the experience, but I may either go after fuel hauling,UPS, or something else, instead.

From what I've heard and seen they kinda suck or at least hire some real retards. Then again who doesn't.
>>
Btw if you can't do 500-600 miles a day most days a week you suck ass and should probably get a different job. Unless you're running the far northeast in which case 400-500 is the benchmark. At minimum you should be getting whatever your top speed on the governor is x8 and preferably closer to x9, anything beyond that is a great day unless you're running nights in which case it should be closer to x10.

If you're actually cracked and can keep the fucking doors shut for an entire shift you can do x10 running during the daytime but I won't lie it fucking sucks. My personal best in a shift running daytime hours is 656 miles limited to 65mph but anymore I start looking for parking once I'm at 560 unless it's a hot load. Still outperforming the company average by a hilarious margin.

Indiana sucks ass and I refuse to fuel there unless absolutely necessary and I don't spend one red hot cent there unless necessary either. They're talking about putting tolls on all the interstates and raising the existing ones so it costs like 80$ minimum to drive across it, I hope everyone stops giving them money almost entirely until they unfuck themselves. Such a shame because Ohio is right next to them and is a joy to drive through.

>>28893856
I can only do what the planner wants to run, but yes, if my route is mostly interstate, I can do up to approximately 700 miles round trip back to the terminal, but if it’s mainly on winding secondary truck routes, then it will be a two-parter.

ive been with prime for about 5 years and have had a camera in my truck for 2 and i use my phone all the time (while its mounted) and they never bitch at me about it, even have it in hand sometimes to take pictures and never get bothered

You don't actually know if a company sucks until you work there and you can't trust reviews because every trucking company in existence has shitty ones from retards that burned out or chimped out and blame everyone but themselves. The company I'm with people talked about like it was worse than welfare express but having been here for a while they treat you pretty decent after about six months if you just keep showing up and trying to do good and keep the bitching to a minimum. Hell I've even talked to a few welfare express drivers and not all of them hate it. It's mostly a mindset thing when you first start out, if you think that every time you get fucked over it's personal you're going to lose your goddamn mind. The reality is if you're just starting out then everybody in the dispatch office and probably the shop too is just as green as you are and mistakes are gonna happen. It's good practice for when you get a big boy job at a real company and they end up in a situation where they have to fuck you around to make shit work and instead of losing your goddamn mind you just handle it gracefully. At least when your first year is done you'll have begun to know when you're getting unduly fucked over and actually need to run shit up the flag pole and get people in trouble without making everyone hate you in the process.
>>
>>28895217
Same, here. The mega I work for has mixed opinions from drivers and while it can suck at times, working for them hasn’t been that bad and despite any possible delays, I can count on daytime dispatch to do the right thing if something happens, whether it’s a truck issue or detention – if you end up at a shipper/consignee for an extended period and you ask dispatch about detention pay, they will take care of it.
Good communication and professionalism (of course) is key in having a successful relationship with your employer, but I understand that it may not be the case for every company.
>>
>>28895277
The only thing I really get shafted on is detention pay and that's mostly because of how the contract is set up. They ended up finding some creative solutions to the issue and anymore I just ask to not get loads that are gonna take more than three hours to get loaded or unloaded so I can recover time. Consistently banging out miles has been the biggest differentiator for me. I've gone from being just another number in the system to people in the office knowing who I am as soon as I call and going out of their way to make sure I don't get fucked around because they know I'll do the same for them. Hell one time they made one of the new guys call me back and apologize for being rude to me before kicking him off the day shift, apparently he'd been a cunt to a bunch of drivers before that too.

Really though the biggest thing is not being an asshole or unprofessional even when you're legitimately upset and pissed off for a valid reason. I've gotten actually upset like three times ever with my main dispatcher and two of those times wasn't their fault at all and they immediately started lighting asses on fire to get it resolved. Hell I apologized the one time I ever got upset at them and they told me to not even worry about it because they had just gotten screamed at and threatened and called a bunch of slurs by another driver like half an hour before because they deigned to ask them why they only drove 220 miles that day when the weather was good and nothing was broken on their truck and they were just absent minded from the indignation of that whole experience and forgot to file some reimbursement requests in time to get them on the check they were supposed to be on. The bar is in hell as a driver and if you clear it at all and actually give a shit about the job and aren't a douche they'll bend over backwards to keep you happy.
