So it was Bill Simpson's fault that Dale Earnhardt died? I remember at the time, much blame was put on Dale for refusing to wear a HANS device. I didn't know until now that his seat belt snapped. Shouldn't Bill Simpson be in jail?
Dale was known to have strapped up his belts incorrectly because there was some part of the shoulder harness that chafed his neck, so he had something upside down. In the NASCAR seatbelt there is a sewn-together section that is designed to rip apart on purpose to provide some cushioning so that the driver doesn't faceplant the wheel but also doesn't get whiplash. Because of the way Dale had his belts set, that part ripped too quickly and let him impact the steering wheel.Basically if he'd at least had a neck brace or hans the strap would have not been able to chafe his neck which meant he wouldn't have had to strap his belts in backward or upside down or whatever, and it would have saved his life instead of being the very reason he is dead.Life is ironic.
>>28854646Shouldn't Dale have turned left instead of right? Talk about basic errors.
>>28854672sometimes you wanna turn right to go left, but hitting the wall was definitely the rookie mistake which cost him
>>28854646If you hit the wall hard enough that you tear your seatbelt, you're fucked to begin with. On top of him being a stubborn dickhead and not using it correctly and refusing to wear a HANS the impact forces of his crash were immense and even if he had been wearing all of his gear correctly it likely would've still ended his career and fucked him up bad. And honestly, dying on the track was how he was meant to go. He would've hated what the sport became after his passing and he would've hated what the world became after his passing even more than that.

My uncle was close with Earnhardt and his familyNobody blamed anybody, they were all aware of the risks, and they were all willing to embrace themIt was just sad for everyone

>>28854658Investigation revealed that the lapbelt issue didnt contribute to the head injury. But the harness did have a substantial amount of play in it.More than likely Earnhardt had loosened up his harness while under caution for a dozen laps while they cleaned up the mess from the pile up and simply forgot to tighten it or (more likely) his hubris left it loose because it was only a couple laps left.I watched the accident live.Everyone had seen him take bigger hits. Many times over.Any fault was on Earnhardt himself.
