stupid questions go here
>>28857234is there a difference between these two cleaners?
>>28857250No they're both a meme, along with the filters.
If I lower my idle from 800 to 600 rpm will I risk damage from the lower oil pressure ?
>>28857250one is a cleaner and one is an oil...
>>28857384There's clearly 2 different sets, I'd imagine they're no different though.
>>28857234Based sleeper setup.
>>28857234Has anyone ever dealt with a steering vibration due to suspension? Already ruled out balance, wheels, tires, and rotors. Probably not motor mounts or cv axle because it doesn't vary with rpm or engine load. At any speed over 20mph, I feel a "springy" sort of binding when I initiate or exit a turn, mostly near center. On the highway, I still get that cogging sensation, but also a vibration like a wheel is out of balance. The vibration is most apparent with light steering pressure. The front struts look shot as the boot is torn and there seems to be blueing on the inner telescoping part of the strut. When I do the 3-9 6-12 test, everything seems tight, aside from a little movement in the strut. Idk what a normal amount of strut movement looks like. LCA bushes have cracks and kinda stretch a bit when I have it lifted, but again, idk what a normal CA bush looks like. It doesn't feel like a worn steering rack because the steering still feels precise and it's too springy to be metal-to-metal play. Really hoping it's not the control arms because they are a bitch to DIY on this car. Would need to support the whole engine and transmission to remove the mounts just to get to the bolts holding it in.
>>28857234My brother gave me his car several years ago, but never the title. Never really thought of getting it until recently, so thats my bad. But now he doesn't know where his title and refuses to try looking around. What realistically are my options? Just filing for a lost title or getting a rebuilt one?
I hear sort of a squeaking or metallic sound when I'm coasting at lowish speeds, particularly when the clutch is down. Doesn't seem to happen at very low or high speeds, also could swear it only happens on a specific stretch of my commute. I don't know much about cars, are the wheels gonna fall off and get me killed on the highway? How do I explain this to a mechanic when the issue isn't easy to reproduce?
I've got a 1998 JDM CR-V and am moving to California, are they going to let me register it there? bought it when my wife was trying out delivering mail and kept it because I'm a career mail carrier and more comfortable in a right hand drive vehicle at this point.
>>28857234is there some kind of website that lets you filter cars by features?something like gmsarena for phones?like lets say I want a car with a sunroof, quadrasteering and heated steeringwheel, I check those features and it gives me a list of cars that have all of them
do I get one of these 150$ tablets to shove in the dash when all I want is a map when driving? not that I'll actually use it was eying pic rel when I realized it'd be a ton of money
I think my gfs car has a radiator leak. >parked over snow for a week>when she pulled off there was a few drops of neon green left behind>car is pretty new 2021 I think tho with salted roadsThere's no way a little bit is expected to leak right?Should I check the level and monitor and look for an obvious leak but defer it or deal with it right away? Would a shop be able to identify a slow leak or would they charge a diagnostic just to say they couldn't find anything?I had a car that burned coolant and I'd just top it off, but that was a shitbox
>>28857367What does your oil pressure gauge say? Also, why would you do this? Idle at whatever the stock idle RPM was.
>>28858721>>28858824Make and model please
>>28860116You need to inspect it while the system is under pressure. Auto Zone will lend you the tool for free.
I realized it’s been a while since I replaced my battery, and historicallly my focus has had crank start issues once in a while (not like the car never starts it just struggles sometimes in super hot or cold weather, I noticed), so I figure I splurge a little and get one of these batteries from odyssey. I’m guessing it’s overkill for my car? should I not bother and just get the regular duralast battery for a hundred bucks less? I also might run a dashcam in the future. after paying for ceramic tints for my car I feel like I’m treating my shitbox a bit too well
is it safe to fart while filling up?
>change gasket on oil pan>car idles much better at stops and in generalwhy?
>>28857234Why aren't more vehicles made of aluminum these days? It seems like rust is the main reason people get rid of their cars long term assuming they don't get in a crash. Seems like removing rust from the equation would make cars last way longer?
>>28861031cost?
>>28858747Go look for it at his place or tell him to stop being a fag
>>28860924possibly some kind of leak was allowing crankcase pressure to vent to atmosphere rather than through the PCV back into the intake,or it's just because of the new oil you used after dropping the pan.
I have a 2018 civic si and as soon as I let off the clutch and it starts biting, it feels shuddery or like it's bogging almost. the bite point is also super high. the only other manual car I had was a V8, but I assume a shitty 4 banger can also get rolling without needing to rev it out; this shit is driving me crazy. is the clutch on its way out or is it possibly the shitty injectors these cars are known for?
>>28861240You have to give it gas in anything other than a diesel, I6 or V8. Check your clutch fluid.
>>28858721Are you the anon that had a steering box freshly rebuilt in another thread? That "springy" comment makes me think of a steering box with worn out balls (out-of'-round) that are binding at one point but when centered has play. That would cause both of your issues and may not be noticeable in the 3-9, 6-12 test.
>>28861031Cybertruck "frames" are snapping under normal trailer tongue weights because aluminum is brittle compared to steel.Think of a ceramic tire vs a rubber tire.
Are old cars really easier to work on in general? Stuff like a 1995 Nissan, can I get away with just basic hand tools for most operations?Dude says the car has been sitting for 8 months and it doesn't run. I've just asked him for clarification if the engine turns over or if it just won't start due to the old gas.
A bearing somewhere in my clutch or transmission clicks when under load. Can I ignore it for a while or is it going to explode very soon?
I was driving my brothers car and kept hearing this wheel noise while driving it. Is that the wheel bearings?https://files.catbox.moe/884r6u.mp3
My pentastar stumbled twice on startup this afternoon, 156k miles, what are the odds it's just spark plugs or something else and not the dreaded failed lifters/cam lobe wipe? Thinking about it now, the throttle probably has never been cleaned. I've also noticed inconsistent MPGs that can't be explained by winter blend or drivingECU logging shows generally random misfires, not consistent increasing counts on a specific cylinder, and they happen at the same rate as when the car was at 120k, and nowhere near enough to trigger the CEL.>>28861417Pre-2000s cars are less packed together and have less stuff in them. A fwd 4 cyl of the era is relatively easier in that regard but you'll be fighting old stuck bolts and worn out shit. I had an early 90s rwd v8 in 2009 and it was "easy" but taking anything apart was a bitch.
>>28861760You answered half your question from the start.Change the plugs, clean the TB.When doing the plugs you're already deep enough in that you can take the covers off and inspect the cams.Barring that, replace the pcv valve. Check for vacuum leaks and evap problems. I have a suspicion that your engine idles rough. If plugs + clean TB + new pcv + no evap problems doesn't make the idle better then yes your cams are worn out of spec. And if everything looks good and your plugs are good and such the next thing would be an injector problem.
>>28861767Yes it idles kind of shaky. I'll do the plugs and throttle body clean, and PCV valve. Dunno how to check for air leaks guess I should take it to a shop.
How do you figure out if a mechanic is good or not? Every place I look at the reviews for, nearly every review is just impressed that they managed to replace a battery "within 10 minutes" and other stupid shit like that.
I've never owned a car with independent rear suspension. All of my cars have had either a solid rear axle or twist beam. Am I missing out?
>>28861857Yes and no. IRS is great for road response and adjustability, IRS sucks for when parts start to wear out. A beam rear that lasts for 150k miles only needs two bushings and a spring pack replacement. For an IRS is it your forward link, trailing, upper, lowr, are all the rubbers bad, do you need adjustment bolts that wear out in 20k miles to align, etc.Aside from the inherent handling charactetistics it's a different of like 4 parts that handle both sides or 8 parts for each side.
Nice accessories for a basic bitch SUV?b that could be useful?
>>28861830if you give them oem parts for a job and they don't use them, especially for small shit like hose clamps or radiator caps, fuck emif they break or lose other shit along the way and don't tell you about it fuck em doubly so
>>28861878roof rails and crossbars, better tires or just new tires.
07 Jeep Liberty Sport. In the process of replacing fuel pump. Hose 6 in this diagram broke of at the attachment to part 4 in this diagram. I understand that its the flow management valve, but google and other forums arent giving me any info on replacing it, and i cant find anywhere that even sells a replacement. Searching mostly gives info on air intake for the engine, i think the naming of it is confusing google. How important is it for that hose to be attached? Could it still function as a fresh air intake or would it be dangerous to leave it like this? Would gluing it back on and taping around it to secure it be good enough?
>>28862092Heres the break
Can I save the silicone hose and turkey baster I use to do my brake lines? Should I clean them somehow? It's a pain finding new ones every time
>>28861857Do you track or autocross? No? Then it's unlikely you'd even notice the difference if someone swapped your suspension out and didn't tell you.
>>28861240does it get worse as it gets warmer?Could have a hotspot on the clutch or flywheel.
>>28859383call them and find out.>>28859565im sure you can ask chat for this.>>28860049$150? you posted a $550. are you talking about those chink headunit replacements? just use your phone. get a good magnetic mount for it so you can have it on your dash within easy view.>>28860846depends on what car. die hard to use sell rebranded odyssee batteries. i always want one, its hard to justify buying one when you have 4 cars>>28861694change the transmission oil, inspect it, place a strong magnet to the plug, chang the oil again after 6 months.
>>28861031it's significantly more expensive, also aluminum "rusts" probably worse than steel, it turns into powder and disappears, plus it would introduce dielectric/galvanic corrosion problems everywhere it connects to steel parts.
>>28861728the telltale check for wheel bearings: turn the wheel as you drive. if it's bearings, the sound will get worse when the load shifts toward the side with the bad bearing, and will get better when the load shifts away.
>>28862094drill out the hole the exact size of a coupler of some sort (I've used vacuum line connectors they come in assortmnets of different sizes, pic rel)then push the coupler into the hole you drilled and glue in place with a bit of jbweld epoxy(maybe remove the piece from the tank so you dont get shavings in there)
>>28862361absolutely save them. I put messy stuff like that in sealed gallon sized ziplock bags for storage so it doesn't get brake fluid all over everything, alternately clean it up with a solvent like carb cleaner and it won't be messy
>>28862618Aluminium oxide is a essentially a passivated layer, whereas iron oxide 'rust jacks' and continuously exposes fresh steel to oxidize. The main issue with aluminium, alloy notwithstanding, is fatigue and ductility once shaped.
Love me a big ass sunroof
>>28862628i'm not a chemist so i can't tell you what happens, but i live in an extreme area of the salt belt, and i've had thick aluminum parts on cars exposed to road salt literally just crumble away on numerous occasions
Have 100k saved up, make around 120k a year and pay around 2k a month in rent. I could comfortably put around 25k down on a new ride. What do you guys recommend? I want a ride that can get to any trail head and something I could eventually overland with. I wanted a 4runner but I see slighly used ones are fucking comically expensive. I test drove a new frontier and FUCKING LOVED it, however it would be close to 50k otd. Do I just go and get an older tacoma? Just feels so odd buying something new or so expensive like a 4runner if im sitll living in an apartment I guess
anyone has experienced all of the pic related cars? which one has the most comfortable ride, cabin quality/finish and road noise insulation? we're talking regular/basic/common trim levels with automatic tranny and reasonable wheel sizes like R16-R17-R18, no big ass R21 wheels with akrapovic exhausts and quad turbo V8s. i know the best way is to test drive, but still.
>>28862994personally I would drive a shitbox and save up for a house instead, but everyone has different prioritiesif you're going to buy a car, set a reasonable budget first, pinky swear to stick to it, and get your favorite car you can find that falls under it. that will keep emotions from causing you to spend more than you want. also the less in a hurry you are, the more time you spend looking, the better of a deal you will find.
>>28863048Sadly I will never be able to afford a house in my state. I am completely priced out of WA unless I get lucky with a few promotions. I have never bought a car before, so not sure what to even set for a budget or what a typical car payment is.
>>28863054don't spend your life in a shithole anon, there are nice areas all over the country that are affordable. $100k will you get you a decent small house in my town and there are plenty of jobs and infrastructure here.$8,000 will buy a nice reliable used car around 10 years old that will last you at least 10 years if you take good care of it. the simpler the car the better if you're not a car guy, look for the fewest electronic gizmos you can find, the less stuff to break the better.
>>28862994Get a frontier sv from the last generation and use the rest to buy a house. You can get them in the teens with low double digit miles.
>>28858747Get him to request a new title which is like 15 bucks then sign it over to you and then transfer it to your name or all of that can be done in one step. Call the dmv you don't need a rebuild title
>>28862591well yeah that's the comparison; bailed on it anyways, would rather the peace of mind
I'm planning a cross country move. Was going to pull my jeep on a rental trailer. But they all say max tire diameter of 28”. I have 35s. What's the actual concern? Rollover? I can't find any info on why the limit is 28.
>>28863015Are you adamant about wanting a german car?
>>28863087pretty much yes. im based in europe. its either euro make or asian makes like toyota, kita, hyundai, lexus. none of asian cars come even close with build quality and engineering to german cars.
>>28863062Friends and aging parents live here. Cant just abandon them in their old age.>>28863072I dont think Ill be able to afford a house ever. Part of me wants to just tard out and get a used 4runner and drive it the next 30 years. Only like 44k for one though
>>28863135would your aging parents prefer you build a life for yourself and visit them by plane a few times each year, or sacrifice your prime years for them? i have grown kids, and i'd be overjoyed if they moved away if it meant having a life of their own.
>>28861031>>28861412It's because aluminum fatigues cumulatively whereas steel is fine up to a fixed stress level. Aluminum components WILL fail eventually, steel will last forever if it's not overstressed.
>>28863135I agree with the other anon, don't waste your life making excuses that you're tied down when you aren't. You'll look back in 10 years and regret it.

What's a good entry into german cars?Looking online I get advice about BMW 330, and Mercedes C300But I was looking for some crossover/SUV like BMW X1/X3 or Mercedes GLA 250 or CLA but I was advised against getting those. What do you think? Also what about VW Tiguan/Atlas?
>M5od tranny, ranger>Clutch barely disengages>Have to pump pedal to get it to start working again, maybe half and inch or less from the floor until it bites>Rebled clutch, back to normal for a couple of weeks>Trouble disengaging again>Hold pedal to floor for over a minute and does not move on its ownThere is no fluid loss. Is it possible that a leak could be so small that it lets air in but no fluid out?
>>28863233did you definitely get air out of it when you bled? could be an internal leak where fluid is slipping past the plunger but air isn't necessarily getting in. also air will pass easier than fluid so it's definitely possible a leak is big enough for air but too small for fluid.i would personally replace the master cylinder, if that doesn't do it, replace the slave (hopefully it doesn't require a clutch job). if it's a real shitbox you can try adding some stop leak of some kind, it might be you time.
>>28863372I had it bled* my bad. And it was perfect for a while. Right where it needed to be. This happened after I already replaced the master cylinder so maybe it was a defective part? I'm going to have them replace the line and master cylinder. If it still happens, then it has to be the slave, right? Unfortunately that requires the transmission dropped to replace so I need to save some money for that one. But it does not grind gears or feel like the disk is dragging on the clutch in its current state. So I should be safe for now, right?
>>28863468it only started happening after you replace the master? that would make me suspect either the new master cylinder or maybe the line wasn't torqued properly. I would probably:take the clutch line out completely, check all the threads for damage, and reinstalling it triple checking each fitting is tightened correctly, then bleed the systemif it still acts up after that replace the master cylinder, making sure to use OEM or OEM equivalent parts, and double checking it is the correct part, sometimes parts will physically fit but be for a different configuration with different pedal travel etc.you can also see if there is an adjustment on the pedal travel, older cars would have a nut you would loosen and the rod could be extended to make the cylinder engage more, most newer cars don't but your mayif it seems to be a slave cylinder problem, bummer. i'd do a complete clutch job while it's out as it's basically parts only at that point.also apparently they don't make brake fluid stop leak anymore, i'm positive i used to buy it back in the 90s, they probably got sued or something
>>28863488jesus christ i have no idea why i reddit spaced that, i'm going to bed

Does anyone have a pdf or a torrent course to learn a bunch of car mechanic shit in general? Just wanna learn stuff so I can repair my shibox. If you know about searching for like diagrams of specific parts or brands i'd love to hear.
>>28863978have you tried searching google for a user manual specific to your car model?
>>28863978have you tried READING THE FUCKING STICKY??
>>28863979my specific model wasn't available. same model but different years were but the layouts seemed different so weren't really usefull. Its a 2003 palio but there were a few models so yeah. >>28864004i live in fourth world country saar and no job + no money + almost indian basically.its either sell this thing for like $300 or spend $75 in a new clutch kit, change it, and then just maybe i will be worth 1k. desu i'd be sad to let it go cause its my first car and before this it worked really well even if its a shit car. I'm pretty attached to it.>>28864005can't find a tut on youtube about changing the whole thing so I will be trying tthis. Ty anon
>>28862620Yep, it’s only on the right side but I guess it’s best to replace both
4A FE 1998 toyota Corolla runs sometimes rich. Bugeye> Spark plugs changed>Throttle body changed> Distributor cap, rotor, and ignitor changed>Plug wires changed>Changed vacuum hoses>O2 changed>Oils have been changed The car runs reall well sometimes and other times it idles like shit, until i give in gas then it "resets" itself and runs fine. The o2 sensors get changed because they start failing after a year. Its more likely to idle like shit when cold, pressing clutch to change gears drops revs almost to the point of stalling but it quickly gets back up.I don't know what's wrong
I go from 15" wheels to 17" wheels. Yes it all fitsFills the wheel well better too. What else am I in for from this change? Speedometer? Mpg? Grip?
>>28864113Check the fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter. The fpr is easy, just pop off the vacuum line and see if fuel comes out and if it does, replace it.
>>28864114Most prominent is unsprung NVH.Anything else is close to placebo-levels of changes, slight gearing aside.
>>28864115I haven't touched the FPR but the filter is newThanks
>>28863978if you've never picked up a wrench before, i usually recommend the chrisfix repair and maintenance playlist as a good very basic introduction to doing basic stuff on your car: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYfY-AIC_WI&list=PLvKbarVtwhUvvdufd-D0GTB3Cq7tKxuWlalso get on an enthusiast board for your car and see if anyone has a link to a free downloadable shop manual, or if it's older there might be a haynes or chilton you can buy for it. you need a shop manual before working on it don't try to wing it.
>>28864113make sure you only used oem/denso parts. if you put on an amazon chinese (or autozone) o2 sensor or throttle body for example, that could be your entire problem. before you start troubleshooting, take everything to oem.next connect a scantool and read the o2 sensor values and fuel trims to determine if it's running rich or lean and under what conditions it runs rich or lean.also o2 sensors should last 200k miles minimum, they shouldn't be failing after a year
I have a rattle coming from the back of the car, but only at certain RPM and when the car isn't cold anymore. I believe it's coming from the exhaust. I suspect the valve to put the exhaust in sport mode has broken off, and is rattling inside the silencer. Is there any way to get it out of there (besides cutting the silencer open) or do I have to get a new exhaust to "fix" this?
>>28864137What?
Always driven na petrols, how bad is turbo lag? Never had the opportunity to open up in one, it's always been a friends car or a loaner/rental. Spend most of my time cruising at low RPMs so I can't imagine I'm missing much.
>>28864380had golf mk4 1.8t (with mechanical throttle cable). its a daily car, no tuning, no racing. there wasnt much lag, tho you had to "run" into power band like you would do in turbodiesel, except turbodiesel has way more pulling power and is more satisfying, even in small displacement. if youre getting stock car (mostly german) thats mean for daily driving, i doubt youre gonna experience turbo lag, theyre not that fast and theyre tuned for city/hwy driving. if youre getting yourself into some obscure tuning stuff or high performance gokarts, then you may experience it.
How do I know which brake pads to buy? Why is the information so inaccessible?
>>28857234Hyundai Santa Cruz or Ford Maverick? Looking to get a small truck in the states. So far leaning Maverick, seems to mog the Santa Cruz in fuel efficiency and bed size while the Santa Cruz is more powerful and looks cool, I guess. Anyone own either of these or have any thoughts?
>>28864403not a huge fan of the hyundais front end, but overall its more distcint and interesting vehicle. the interior looks way luxurious and upscale than that in ford, however i dont really like those sharp edged big ass screens on hyundai, ford did it better. but overall interior of ford seems too utilitarian, looks like some sort of cargo van. hyundai on the other hand looks like some nice city hatchback or sedan. maverick offers more dope colors tho. and ford probably has better resale value. i would pick santacruz honestly, since i care about my surroundings a lot, its way more nicer inside atleast based on looks.
>>28864114way rougher ride (yes, even one inch makes a big difference), worse mpg, speedo may be accurate (depends if youre using way out of manufacturers limit size), heavier steering especially while parking.grip? maybe. more likely depends on the width of tyres than rim size. if theyre wider, the car feels way more planted and stable (especially when driving in straight line fast on highway, feels like a bullet), but loses maneuvrability around curves (less nimble, because huge tyres arent as flexible).
hello /o/tists, I am carsitting for two months and I drive it every two days for about 15-30 minutes (until I see the temp gauge go up and stay up), but I'm looking into battery maintainers, would you recommend getting one or just sticking to driving it? I must do this a lot more in the future so it's not just these two months
>>28864420Fair, maybe I should give the Santa Cruz more consideration. At the end of the day I'm looking for a "car with some truck features" more than a "truck with some car features". I'm wanting a small truck to be able to have the utility of a truck bed for when I need to move something inconveniently large or haul supplies from the hardware store. But I'm not delusional enough to think it will be often or high volume enough to warrant wasting a ton of money on gas with an F-150 or something.
>>28864427Idk if this helps your effort posting but thank you anon. I was considering putting 1996 impala ss wheels on a 1994 cadillac fleetwood (they bolt right up and fill out the wheel well) I was thinking of this because there's a set for the low near me with fresh rubber on them so I figured I could save some money vs buying new tires all around the original 15's (impala ss have 17's)
>>28860198>>28858721Its a 2015 rx450h awd.
>>28864466i have had OEM R16 205/55 tyres, went for R17 225/45 and my rim width increased from 6.5J to around 8.5J and boy it was like night and day difference. turning steering wheel at parking lot speeds was way harder, if you have weak hands, expect using both hands to spin the wheel around. spirited driving around bends was as tossable, you feel was if youre wheels are square and hard, whereas small R16s you can feel how the rubber flexes under pressure and it makes it feel lighter. also - forgot to mention your acceleration worsens, my situation was noticeably slower. rims and tyres both are bigger and heavier, more power needs to spin them. now there are some pros of using wider tyres. well first of all the fitment looks doper, almost inline with wheel arches. your car has less bodyroll while cornering, it stays flatter. your tyres may not be as flexible, but since theyre bigger (and probably wider) you have a bigger contact patch with paved road, which means its less likely to lose grip, you naturally feel more safe.big/wide tyres need certain criterias to be perfect - silky smooth asphalt with no pothole or anything and driving feels like youre gliding over clouds/glass. its a nice feeling. but its a rare occasion on public roads. youd be surpised but having more flexible tyres and suspension actually makes you faster on bad roads, because you dont lose as often traction which means youre in control. if youre stiffened up car bounces like a basketball on uneven roads youre more likely to lose control. tested by myself. anyway, i bought bigger wheels mostly for looks and sold them after few seasons, when to stock r16s. i want some comfortregarding your chevy and caddy situation, depends how thick are tyres. if theyre this meaty like old american cars used to have (think drag racers), then i dont think its going to be really bad upsizing to 17s
>>28864462if youre not planning to build a house from the ground up, doing farm work or anything really blue collar, then i highly doubt you need a pickup truck. id rather get a SUV. they feel nicer, way comfier, more choices. lets be honest, maverick is boy-ish looking truck and santacruz looks outright feminine. i suspect resale value on them is crap, especially santa cruz (unless you plan to keep the truck for decades), because those who want a truck will buy "an' ol' trusty real mans truck", if i want nice ass hauler around city, then id get some SUV. dunno man. after all theyre cars made to drive, make sure to test drive them. nothings worse than a shit ride quality and disappointing purchase. i have a suspicion that ford will have better noise insulation and will have better trucking features. santacruz is probably literally an SUV with open cargo bed.
Time to change it or nah?Only put like 1k miles on it in 4 months, but looking pretty brown.
>>28864490OEM caddy tires are P235/70R15 and the imp ss wheels rockin a P255/50ZR17 tire. You think it's worth it or should I eyeball some rubber for the 15s?
>>28864504if you have the money then just fuck it and buy it. youll have some personal experience first hand rather than listening to some anons on dying forum. its not like the car will become undriveable. if anything i think you could buy another OEM set and sell the oversized ones. judging by raw numbers - plus two inches to diameter and less rubber. think it will be a bit rougher on ride quality. depends on what youre looking. if you drive this car one a year - who cares

>>28857234the transmission is going on the 2000 honda accord, it’s at 120k miles. is it even worth trying to replace or should we just sell it to the auto shop? I have a $6k emergency fund and my parents are willing to help out with a zero interest loan but I’m just not sure where to go from here. It’s still drivable but they said it could go at any minute
>>28865308Just replace the transmission and keep saving. At least get a few quotes for doing it.
>>28865308you can get a working used transmission from a junkyard for $500 - $800. probably about a 5 hour replacement so factor in $500 labor and another couple hundred for misc parts, so for under $2k you can have the car back up and running, I would do that if it's otherwise in good shape.
>>28865308also what are the symptoms you're getting that tell you its about to go out?
Can the springs/shocks be replaced to a superior-performing, NON-OEM spec with aftermarket parts in a 2022+ Kia Sportage? I want a more comfy ride + better off-road performance (less bouncing) if possible. I do not want to raise or lower the suspension.
>>28865333it's really going to be one or the other, a more comfy ride is going to bounce more when you're offroad.
>>28865334It feels like there's limited bump stops like the rebound and compression are shit and it cannot handle anything other than really minor bumps I just wonder if theres a way to improve it. I know in the more recent models they DID alter the front suspension geometry somehow so they know it was a problem. >a more comfy ride is going to bounce more when you're offroad.I've read a lot of of reviews of Toyota TRD and Ford Raptor products where the car reviewer says the off road shocks actually improve the tolerance for bumps because you have so much more compression possible with the fancier suspensions.
>>28865332Not sure as it’s my husbands car and has always been a beater. He doesn’t let me drive it as I totaled his camry 6 months into us dating. They also said brakes would need to be replaced soon but it just passed inspection. It’s slow to speed up? I’m going to let my dad give it a whirl as he’s had a transmission die on him before. We trust the auto shop but are both completely ignorant about cars in general. We just put $350 in on a new windshield and brand new tires last year so I’d love to save it if we can. Google said a transmission would be around 2-3k but i don’t even know where to begin to buy one. I guess I can check craigslist but I have never bought auto parts other than windshield wipers. Any advice or resources to look into this would be appreciated. Sorry I am so ignorant on all this, I just didn’t know where to turn and the “stupid questions” disclaimer made me feel better.
>>28865343also apparently it needs a $1000 air filter and apparently our auto shop doesn’t replace transmissions.
Do Subarus really drink oil like an alcoholic and need to be monitored constantly for their oil level?
>>28865343>>28865347get the hell away from that shop. an air filter is $20 for this car.have an actual knowledgable expert look at the transmission before you do anything. could be something as simple as a sticking solenoid or low fluid, but hard to say over the internet with no trouble codes or symptoms.you can get a used transmission by calling around local junkyards, or in a pinch car-part.com or ebay will have it, try to find something with a DOA warranty and make sure your shop is ok with it first.

Ok, I want to buy this car that is about 2.5 hrs from where I live. However, it has a small radiator leak and the owner recommended I tow it home. How feasible would it be to drive it home without it overheating?
>>28865729Just pull over regularly and check the coolant level. Plan on like 6 hours for the 2.5hr drive to give yourself daylight to deal with issues that might pop up. Bring tools and plenty of premix.
My shitty bug (that I love) doesn't have any gauges beyond the most basic spedometer, fuel gauge, and tachometer; I was thinking of installing some separate gauges and I'm quite fond of these pods that mount right in the middle like pic relatedI'm absolutely gonna be installing coolant and oil temperature gagues, but what does /o/ think I should I put as my third gauge? I see people recommend:>Oil pressure>Voltage>Exhaust temperature
>>28864502the bigger issue is that there's several quarts too much oil
>>28865735oil pressure would make the most sense I think, but the warning lights for that and voltage should work fine enough for a commuter car
>>28865735The only additional gauges that provide meaningful information for a "regular use case" car are coolant temp and oil pressure gauges, as problems with either of those two are critical to the life of your engine.Oil temp is pointless unless you're going on track, and voltage is also somewhat pointless if you own a multimeter. If you *have* to have three gauges, I'd go with coolant temp, oil pressure, and an AFR gauge. It's somewhat pointless unless you do tuning and/or have a custom map you want to know is safe, but the fact that it makes frequent large movements makes it kind of fun to watch.
>>28864460depends how long the owner is planning to let you babysit the car for. when a car sits for about a week the residual oil drains out of most of the galleries and back into the pan. so on startup the engine more or less has to re-oil itself. this probably doesn’t matter much unless its some autistic car. but, the right thing to do is what you’re already doing. start it every 2-3 days with 30 minute drives. if you do plan on letting it sit for periods of time, then a battery tender will help preserve the battery, but it won’t keep oil and fluids moving through the system. nor will it keep rubber parts moving and lubricated. so if you park it for a month, then your next start will be in that “no oil dry rubber” state. and in that scenario it can almost be better to minimize how often you start it, so pushing it to 3 months on a tender might be better. I’m not sure there’s a definitive answer here, and your mileage may vary depending on what car it is. For me my car lives on a tender in the winter and I start it roughly once a month to keep things moving.
>>28863083 if your car is on wheels > 28s its center of gravity is super high so its a liability for rollovers in the event of trailer swayjust rental companies protecting their product and protecting themselves from you suing them
>>28865730here's another stupid question, but I reckon I'd have to drive it 20-30 minutes, wait til it cools down, check coolant and drive it again right?

Frens, anons, /o/tists, I have come here to ask a simple question that I see discussed once in a while...>a career in the automotive industry What are ((you))r takes on working in the automotive industry, and advices for a true wrenchlet who wants to get his hand dirty. I know you are reading this, thank you for giving me some time. Help me /o/ anon, you're my only hope. >Oh also what's your dream car???? Why?
How the FUCK do you put this motherfucker back on
are bad valve cover gaskets the cause of 'most' top engine oil leaks on older cars?
>>28866141“auto industry” encompasses everything from engineering to sales to finance to mechanics to working in a plant. I’m an engineer by trade but have experience working with almost all of them > engineering relatively well paying career, very hard to get into an OEM without experience or knowing someone. stress and workload comparable to SV. supplier less so. more fun if you’re passionate about cars, but that’s not a requirement. 80% chance this requires you to move to Detroit.> sales dealership sales life fucking sucks. it can be fairly lucrative if you have rizz but your top end potential will always be limited. you won’t earn many transferable skills (except rizz). everyone I know that’s done this no longer does or went into management> financebe ready for some of the dumbest arguments you’ll ever make in your life. shaving a penny off of a part cost can save the company $10,000. engineering often does not win these types of arguments. and that’s effectively your entire life. there are a lot of vipers, people will backstab you if it helps their rise.> mechanicgenerally the people working at firestone or sneed ford hate their existences. warranty work blows, you deal with retards that don’t change their oil all day, and you will blow out your back from bending over eventually. there are some jobs that are better (fleet diesel mechanic, plant millwright) but unless youre in one of those areas this is bound to be ass> manufacturing you will deal with people who don’t know their thumb from their toe. be very very careful because working on the line is the kind of job can be automated away or shipped overseas at the drop of a hat. Good temporary job, not a good career. Mgmt and engineering are stressed 24/7 and everyone’s looking to move up at any means necessary. “manufacturing engineer” is one of the most stressful jobs in automotive.

What do I need to look for when buying used german cars?Currently I'm thinking of either getting BMW 330 or X3.

Euroanon hereM54 E46(330i) or N52 E90(330i)? Currently have an N45 E90(the 316i shitbox basically) and plan on passing it onto my siblings after finding a replacementA few listings of each for sale in my country currentlyThe E46s are the nearest and slightly cheaperI hear M54 burns oil...
>>28866553Yes, M54s are known to burn oil, the main reason being that the 2 piece oil rings get weak over time - it's more a matter of "when" rather than "if". One way this can be delayed is by doing the o2 pilot mod, but it's a 50/50 as to whether or not it works, and even then it's not a permanent solution. The correct way to fix it is to replace the oil rings, ideally with the 3 piece oil rings from the M52TÜ. You could of course just get an 328 E46, as they have the M52TÜB28 motor, but they're a bit harder to find owing to their relatively short production run and age.I would personally still choose the E46, just because I prefer they way they look. E90's are just a bit... Meh. Arguably worse interiors than an E46, too.
>>28866546Buy Kia stinger instead. It's BMW but better.
Want a car that can outrun a charger r/t and can be fucked with enough to be competitive in my local scene of college kids and rednecks. I want something with a manual transmission ideally, RWD/AWD, and with plentiful parts, priority in that order. Thus far I've looked at S197 5.0 mustangs (seem overpriced in my area), Lexus SC300 and IS300 which are hard to find with manuals, and checked marketplace for older cameros but got nothing. Would like to acquire a beat to shit carcass that needs work but only work that I am capable of doing myself. Am I missing something? Am I just looking for a 350Z?

I just found this shit underneath my car (in a garage so it's not some random trash), should I be worried? Is this even a car part?2010 Volkswagen Beetle if that matters
>>28866713that is an LED bulb that is CANbus compliant. The little black things are diodes to prevent voltage reversion through the circuit and the yellow things are the LEDs. That pcb is missing it's housing which is why it looks weird. Toss it in the trash, you're good bro.
>>28866713My guess is that's some piece of a diagnostic tool. The only components I see are resistors and LEDs, so maybe it's meant to visibly check power or signal on some wires. Also we should all laugh at the Europeans and their lead-free solder.
>>28866714Oh that makes sense, like an interior bulb. I don't think there are any blocking diodes though, just four resistors, one for each LED.
>>28866714Interesting, thanks anon. I'm a little worried about what it might have come off of though; it could be from a diagnostic tool a mechanic left behind like >>28866717 said, but if this bit came off some important electronic component it's possible something else got damaged too, or maybe it's just shit unleaded solder like also like 2nd anon said
>>28866719on second look you're right. they are 4320 size surface mount resistors. anyways, yeah it's a t10 type wedge bulb for interior lighting. on more research, the resistors both put the leds into their power range and keeps the CANbus from throwing a code for "light out" in whatever the reporting node may be.
>>28866516If you want to fuck around with engines and sheeeit consider becoming an A&P I think you yanks call it generally much better prospects in aviation and if you work for a good company conditions can be pretty good and work pretty chill
>>28866727The 4320 is the value, not the size. In this case it's 432 Ohms (432 and zero zeros).
what the hell is this piece called, and what is it supposed to do?mine on the passenger side has discolored over time, and I'd replace it if I could figure out what to call it. it reminds me of "stone guards" behind the doors on the gayman, but that term only finds those tiny mud flaps for the toyobaru. it's also difficult to even find in photos of other cars, most don't even seem to have it
>>28866690>a used bmw is superior to any kia new or used. You know what BMW stands for right?
>>28866215Yeah, long term (10 years or so) i think I might move into aviation or defense, but my options for those are limited living in Detroit. I haven’t quite beat the “automotive is actually cool” out of myself just yet
>>28866516Like i said it varies based on what you’re doing. There are jobs that are randomly ass (dealership mechanic), and there are jobs that are consistent (tire tech), and there are jobs that are consistently not ass (fleet diesel mechanic). Generally it’s not a career with a lot of upward potential unless you start your own business, like most trades, or you go into management. There will be a point between 35 and 50 where you find you can’t move the way you used to as a result of being a mechanic and things ache. Your coworkers will be walking stereotypes (Mcdonalds for lunch, monster for breakfast, 6 pack for dinner), and be financed up to their eyeballs in snap on tools. You can obviously take care of yourself better and not finance $200k in snap on stuff, but the culture is very much a “blue collar tough guy” type of culture, and non-conformists don’t often fit in.The good news is that Jiffy lube will hire almost anyone, so you can get a feel for if its something you want to do with not much input cost. Working at jiffy lube fucking sucks though so don’t make a career out of it

>>28867425You needed to replace the crush washer for the drain bolt. You don't need to remove the filter, but you will need to drain the oil and pour it back in after swapping that crush washer. Now you know, congratulations on learning. Now correct your mistake.
>>28866190using a set of theseif you can get the ends into the holes first then snap the big part into place. if that's not possible, just a lot of patience and finesse

>>28866773it's a protective plastic sheet to keep the paint from getting nicked there. it may peel off if heated with a heat gun.
>>28867425get an inexpensive torque wrench, good chance you didn't torque the drain bolt to spec or it's stripped out from overtightening. use the torque wrench and set it to the proper spec, see if that fixes it.if it's stripped, you can get a self tapping oversized bolt.the filter leak is more concerning. it should seal only hand tight with no tools. make sure you didn't double seal it (leaving the old filter's seal stuck to the block then putting the new filter on top of it), that can lead to sudden and catastrophic oil loss if one of the seals rupture.

Im having issues deciding on aftermarket wheels for my GTII really like the OEM Pretoria but I'm finding it hard to choose a wheel color that goes well with dark iron blueSomething that isn't too loud on the car (like hyper silver) and doesn't disappear into the paint (black and gunmetal)
>>28867545>>28867590I've been watching it for the past few days, and I can pretty confidently say for the drain plug that I just undertightened it; I was probably overly weary of stripping my drain plug from overtightening and went too hard the other way. In any case, I'm definitely gonna remember the crush washers for my next changeAs for the filter, it barely leaks more than a drop or two, and it only seems to do it right after a trip, and once I clean it off there's no more drippage; I'm wondering if there's a bad seal or, worse, the filter housing has a small crack (god bless shitty VW plastic)
>>28869773i would definitely take it off and inspect ASAP. a crack would be pretty obvious. more likely an o-ring wasn't replace, wasn't oiled before replacing so it pinched, or is on the wrong spot. if it's pinched it could blow out while driving causing a major problem
is this an image of the department of gas chambers?
>>28869778Thanks anon, I'll check for pinching since I know for a fact I removed the old ring and oiled the new one. Can I just remove the filter without draining the pan again, and can I just reuse the filter and ring if it's all good or should I pick up a new filter in case?
Paint on my shitbox isn't looking great. Is it worth going to the trouble of trying to polish it myself before I try sell it? Anything else I could do to make it look better? There's also a spot where the paint has been eaten away by something acidic. I was thinking of trying to touch it up but last time I tried it on another car it looks kinda shit because the colour was noticeably different and the spay on clear coat was noticeable. This is on a relatively large area so I might just end up making it look worse
>>28869835is it the vw type that goes on from the top of the engine like this? if so you don't need to do anything, just take it off, check everything carefully, look for cracks in both the housing and the surface it mates to, make sure the big and little o-ring are both in place correctly, new, and not pinched.if it's the vw housing style, use a torque wrench to reinstall (they're like $20 for one that will work). if it's the metal can style, use your bare hands only to reinstall.if it's the can style that spins off you can remove it but you'll lose about 1 qt of oil.i wouldn't replace anything unless you see a problem somewhere. with the metal can style check for double gasketing, and problems with the mating surfaces

What percentage tint should I get if I just want to lower the temp of the cabin in summer without destroying my nighttime visibility?
i smelt coolant in my car for the first time ever. theres no leaks so im pretty sure it's a clogged heater core. will i be okay to go on a road trip (350 miles each way) or should i try to get the kit and unclog it first?
>>28870290I use state legal percent (35% in my state) and the tint has a ceramic layer. Massively helpful for cabin temps and night time is fine for visibility. I work night shift so 80% of all my driving is at night.
>>28870645oops smelled
>>28869806>is this an image of the department of gas chambers?you cant just say that it's NOT a 5000 pound gas chamber because you have to burn 31000 calories from the deep past just to roll the gas chamber 30 miles up along hitler's old high way. 1 pear is 100 calories. Try rolling the gas chamber with your hands to calibrate your senses. The nazis have NO plans to dismantle the gas chambers.
>>28870645>>28870654smelling coolant indicates a leaking heater core. a clogged heater core gives you no coolant smell but little or no heat.you will be ok for the trip unless it's leaking so much you have a puddle of coolant on the floor.if it's a shitbox, go to your FLAPS and buy a can of K seal, it'll probably buy you a year or two. if it's a good car, fix it right, OEM heater core (huge pain in the ass job in most cars)
>>28870647>I work night shift so 80% of all my driving is at night.Well that's convenient, im in the same boat. Does your commute have a lot of street lights? I'm usually driving on pretty dark highways. My state is also 35 percent, I checked.
>>28870701hm i just drove it and didn't smell anything (i have a terrible sense of smell though) and did the tube check and both ran hot. when i smelled it, it was at night running the heater which is why i thought it might be the heater core. oh well hopeful my shit doesnt die on my trip. im definitely doing a coolant flush and thermostat change when i get back.
I'm new to wrenching and trying to get a car I got as a gift up to date on maintenance; it's sat for about a decade in a garage but it's pretty low mileage (about 15,000 km)How many of these need to be maintained/replaced based on age, even with low mileage? I've already done an oil change, new battery, and a brake fluid flush for reference>Spark plugs>Spark plug wires>Coolant flush>Replace fuel filter>Autotranny fluid>Power steering fluid flush
>>28871326Plugs and wires are probably fine unless a rodent damaged them. Pull a plug and have a look, if they're coppers I would replace them. Anything else they're fine to keep in there. 15k is nothing for a 'modern' plug.Coolant for sure change. Drain and fill will do you well, no need for a full flush.Everything else is probably fine but changing every single fluid isn't necessarily a bad thing if your budget allows. That's usually my first step on any used shitbox I buy, all fluids. You've already done the brake fluid which is awesome, that one absorbs water.

>>28871450Not bad if you can spray evenly. But you should go over it again with clear coat spray to protect it. Probably need to find the right type of paint, too.
>>28869108you should drive exactly as fast as you think your car is capable of.the primary thing that will make your car better or worse in the snow is the tire. if you have garbage tires on your car it will get stuck or spin out often. if you have a decent tire (anything 3 peaks rated) then your traction will increase and you’ll be able to do more even if the rest of your car is dynamically suboptimal. secondary is the drive type. RWD dynamically is suboptimal in the snow to FWD. if youre at a stop on dry asphalt, RWD has the benefits of weight transfer to keep the rear wheels planted to the ground and pushing the car forward. if you’re on snow you don’t get that weight transfer. so FWD, since the engine is on top of the driven axle, will maintain better traction in that scenario.AWD can only help you on throttle. It’s useless (and arguably a detriment) once you’re on brake.the ideal car for safe and controlled snow driving is > 3 peaks tires > FWD biased AWD> mild lift if you’re a good driver then RWD based AWD can be better for killing understeer but most people are not.
>>28868292the only car ive ever had to use the manual mode in for normal driving (not mountain downshifting, not me being retarded) was in a jeep wrangler that refused to shift into 8th for whatever reason. it was screaming at 2800 rpm in 7th which was ridiculouschances are your car is probably already optimized for whatever it can get. it’s a useful system to learn if you plan to go mountain driving.
>>28869961this is clearly a bit but in case it isnt, you’d only see some marginal difference if they were aerodynamically superior or substantially lighter.
>>28869980not unless you enjoy seizing engines
>>28869980You're basically asking anons how to delete system32 on your car
>>28871449Suzuki still has to supply parts for it for like a decade, and they will probably do so for even longer than that unless they exit Europe altogether. The bigger issue is that the Jimny is really not good for regular city and highway driving, probably not a good only car.
Maybe you guys can help me with a price check: I'd like to replace all 4 springs on my Maverick. Rears i'm told by the internet are cake. Fronts need a spring compressor tool to swap them out and then an alignment is needed. For labor only, how much should a shop reasonably charge for springs and an alignment?
