How did they become such meme cars? It seems like they had a certain stigma even when new.
>>
Hindsight is 20/20

Many such cases.
End of the day they're still Stewart little cars. Borderline cuck fantasy.
>>
>>28861046
Over 1.25 million Mazda MX-5 units have been produced at the Ujina plant in Hiroshima, Japan, since production began in 1989.

How many other 2 seater rwd convertibles do you know of that were produced in such quantity?
>>
People who bought MGs of the 60s and 70s were known to be fruity
Convertibles historically have been mid life crisis cars, even if the Miata is a genuinely good car
Eventually they bottomed out in value so teenagers and young adults could afford them
They were then badly modified because they were plentiful and affordable, same as anything else
JDM cars as a whole became wrapped up in weeb culture which kinda goes with tranny culture for some reason
Now they're worth more unmodified than modified because it's almost 40 years old.

Did I miss anything?
>>
>>28861053
Also forgot to add, many women bought them when new because it was a "cute" car.
>>
>>28861052
>Over 1.25 million Mazda MX-5 units have been produced at the Ujina plant in Hiroshima, Japan

So all of them are slightly radioactive?
That explains everything.
>>
>>28861052
>rwd 2 seater convertible
Odd how you have to get that deep in specifics to be top seller.
More convertible mustangs have been sold every year the miata was produced.
1.3 million original bodystyle mustangs (1964 1/4 - 1966) were produced.
Honda CBX 1050 Superbike outsold miata's best year for every year it was produced.

Averaging 33k yearly sales is a failure- thats literally the production numbers of the Pontiac Aztek.
Think about that for a minute.
Miata is "so popular" that the Aztek matched its sales numbers....
>>
>>28861068
The Aztek was popular. It's one of the cars that served as a blueprint for the cuckover eggshit that dominates the market today.
>>
Just watch as the pickup truck and cuckover buyers justify why they don't like good thing.
The stigma keeps the prices down, the amount of them that are raced keeps parts for a 30 yo car in stock.
You afraid a random middle schooler in a CRV will call you gay? Oh no, how horrifying!
>>
>>28861053
I'll add that there's always been a certain segment of car culture that's more about fashion than performance. Millennials will remember when older VWs were big with that contingent and you saw tons done up the same way, slammed to the ground on stock wheels or steelies, artificially rusted hoods, etc. For whatever reason that attitude has moved onto Miatas in recent years and you get the same thing, lowered on the cheapest coilovers they can find, ugly wheels, everybody obsessing over the same steering wheels and shift knobs and other irrelevant bullshit, and so on.
>>
>>28861074
>Aztek was popular
Lol.
Fuck no it wasnt.

The one thing I can't get over is how terrible the NA's headlights are because they're round.

I like pop ups, I just don't like how they look on the NA. I've seen the low profile retrofits but those look awkward too.

Gee, I wonder why a highly reliable, highly modifiable, small, agile, rear wheel drive coupe that has offered a manual transmission since inception is popular.

There is literally no comparison. Every other manufacturer cucked out of making cars anything like it. It's the ultimate enthusiast car.

That's never been true in Australia. Small coupes and convertibles were always called hairdresser cars, but the Mx-5 always stood above the rest. Often people make lame jokes like that as a way to start a conversation, as they are too shy to just start talking with a stranger. Get a life.
>>

I thought about getting my then-GF, now-wife one. I think she'd really enjoy it. Unfortunately we have a kid now so it's not really feasible until he stops needing a car seat.
Anyway, I thought mostly women liked these cars and that's how they became super popular (whether it was the men buying to please women or women actually having them is another discussion).

I remember particularly around 2010-2015 every auto blog under the sun kept making articles about how great the Miata was.

They're good cars but they're so vanilla to the point of being such a reddit car. I like them but I cannot stand the weirdos you encounter with them.
>>
>>28861666
>They're good cars but ...
Keep justifying spending 10x+ on a worse car.
"Oh no, what will some rando I'll never see again think about me? I'd better buy a V6 pickup or FWD crossover!"
NPCs are driven by not standing out in any way. They will call anything unusual gay because clinging to the mob mentality makes them feel safe.
We're 75% overweight and 40% obesity - so any man that's skinny is "gay" because clearly all these overweight people are professional bodybuilders. But just going out in public proves otherwise.
Sometimes, a good thing [car], is just a good thing.
I truly believe that the fear of being seen in a car that isn't ordinary is the driver of all miata hate. And that's fine because I just bought a near perfect '99 for $4k last month. So, keep telling people that they're for homos I guess.
>>
They're made for poor people, so it makes sense.
>>
>>28861311
Mustang is actually high on the list. She does like them a lot. She would be too afraid to drive one though (this is entirely psychological, has nothing to do with power or handling), so it would be my car, not hers, and she needs a car, hence my idea for a Miata because I wouldn't give a shit if she dinged it up.

Ford Probe debuted also in 1989.
Outsold the Miata every year, sometimes with 4x the sales even though it wasnt marketed globally.

Miata was always a lifestyle car.
Its an accessory like a purse, the same mentality as Jeep brand Jeep owners.

1997 Probe GT was $2k cheaper.
It was faster.
It hit higher numbers on the skidpad.
>(using that particular.year/model as an example just because I always liked the look).
Every random year Camaro I looked up had higher skidpad and 0-60 numbers than Miata
Every random year Mustang I looked up had higher skidpad and 0-60 numbers than Miata
A 1989 5.0 GT Mustang had an MSRP $200 lower than a 1989 Miata.
A 1999 GT Mustang had an MSRP $400 higher than a Miata.

Everything people claim about the Miata are lies.

No snap oversteer with a clutch diff and stock power. I can bury this cunt into the apex and go WOT, losing speed due to the sheer amount of grip. Outrageously controllable.

Miatas attract not just lap time chasers, but also people who want to intentionally drift at under 30mph. Slicks are really sensitive to heat changes and as that guy mentioned, when the rear kicks out on slicks it's very abrupt and difficult to reign in. Also it's fun to be able to just do donuts or burnouts on a whim if the road is empty, it's hard to do that with ~100whp and grippy tires.
>>
>>28864100
100% agree on the low-speed fun value. Just about every time it rains I'm on a swivel.

>>
Huge volumes of ink have been spilled over how the Miata is perfectly a Miata or whatever, and they're fine to drive, but I've never been that impressed. Part of the Miata thing is keeping the torque low enough that it doesn't affect the handling of the car very noticeably unless you're really trying, so it feels kind of... tranquilized? I just can't get to where I'm like "yeah, I have to have this!".

But a lot of people bought them as a compromise car when they really wanted a bigger or flashier convertible, and found out in the process what a sports car is, which is kind of cool. It's sort of like people buying a Civic thinking they're getting life's consolation prize and finding out what an entry-level driver's car is like. In both cases they become fanatically attached to the brand, which I don't get, but to each their own.

Also the grassroots motorsports people figured out what they are immediately so if you want to do that kind of thing they're a natural choice. If I wanted to do club racing, I'd be hauling a used spec Miata around, but I have too many hobbies already.
