It's rusty and fucked. A new one is the best option. To get the rail off you need to undo the clip from inside the door. It's a bastard job. Look at this link to see how the clips work.

Yes, but.
Early Miata's are forever cars. As long as you stop it from rusting away, you car keep your 35 year old sports car running indefinitely. As new cars get more complex (electrical) systems, there may be more repair choke points in the future.

For sure. Who knows what kind of hybrid monstrosity will come next. Mazda won my trust by keeping the ND as light as the original car. Its possible that they release a hybrid car that is just as light and fun but it can easily be ruined. ND might be the last pure Miata. Get it while you can, when the production stops the price will only go up.

Z4 ends this month. No Boxter anymore. No Toyota GT86, you can't get it in Europe anymore. Fuck, Mazda is pretty much the last man standing.

maybe it's cheaper in europe but in the states the starting MSRP is twice that of the miata. we don't have the A110 but that seems pretty pricey too, at 55k gbp.
supposedly the nissan z has become a lot cheaper over the past year. dont know if that's available in europe.
>>
>>28867148
Guess the point I was making is that sports car supply appears to be drying up completely. Supra will also end with the Z4. In Oz we still have the BRZ/86 twins priced similar to Mx-5. 400Z and base Mustang are double the price.

Does it sound like a little bird chirping? Mine did that noise like you described. Turns out the clutch slave to pivot fork was dry as a bone. I grabbed some grease and literally ran it all around the rod and where it attached to the fork. You can probably feel it without jacking the car. That connection gets dry and the grease keeps it from squeaking.

Why is the confirmation of the next generation Miata being hybrid not talked about more?

Because it's not confirmed. Nothing is finalized, they're just working on a mild hybrid at this stage. We talked about this in the last /mg/ . Here's the link to the latest rumors.

I don't know if I should pay somebody to wrap it or do it myself.

I'd paint it. Would last the life of the car and make it always a 'special' Mx-5. Black is a great base for a colour change, as you don't have to paint those awkward places, like the engine bay, trunk, wheelwells, etc. To save money. consider doing the disassembly, cleaning, prepping the non straightness critical areas and reassembly yourself. It'll be a better job for it. Also I'd leave the windscreen frsme black.

Well I took my recent marketplace miata for its first major drive.

Drove it for maybe an hour and a half with no issues. Had a blast.

Decided to push it hard on some twisty backroads. Maybe 20 minutes from home the radio went out. Shortly after I noticed the battery light was on. The last owner had issues with the battery dying before I bought it, so I suspected the alternator was weak and decided to keep driving.

Maybe 10 minutes later I notice my temp gauge is maybe approaching 3/4 of the way full. Lights were dimming at this point and wiper blade was slow, so I figured coolant fans were getting low voltage and not able to keep up. Kept going a little longer since I was on some super dark narrow roads at this point and nearly home. I also figured it could be the hard driving and that it'd let up if I took it easy.

Look down again a few minutes later at the next stoplight and the temp gauge is right at H. Drove straight to the nearest lot and pull over. Popped the hood and the overflow reservoir was boiling and spitting coolant everywhere.

Was maybe 6 minutes from home at this point so I waited 30 minutes and had some truck bros give me a jump. Managed to make it home while keeping the temp at around 3/4, no other issues.

Thought for sure my shit was all fucked up, so decided to do a leakdown test to check before deciding to scrap or not. Cylinders 1+4 were barely 5% leakage, 2+3 were shy of 20% with all airflow coming from oil fill and vent hose. No signs of air through the rad at all.

I also realized it was the serpentine belt off the alternator+water pump that snapped. Probably was driving without a water pump for miles before I noticed the overheating.

Did I get extremely lucky? Only time will tell I guess.

>>28874861
They're a tough little thing, you'll probably be okay. When you get the fanbelt replaced, take it for another drive to get it up to temp, then replace the cooked oil. I'd do the coolant soon too, but not before ensuring everything is good.

Got timing belt and water pump / reroute finished. Car is off jack stands for first time in 6 months. Drove it around the neighborhood and didn’t see any leaks afterwards. I told myself I’d buy a new soft top if I got the maintenance stuff done.

It’s emerald mica green with a tan top and tan interior.

Replace it with a tan top right? Not black? I might get better black seats in future - but the interior trim will stay tan.

Emerald mica on black here. Keep the tan top. I am currently transitioning my interior to the 02 special edition, just looking for saddle brown seats now.

You can dye leather seats.
Mine has dark red seats, but I'm pretty sure they're the OE '99 seats not swapped ones. Prev owner probably got them dyed. Could be cheaper than a seat swap and you can get the tone of brown you want.

Yeah but I have seen dyed seats fail and they fail miserably. The time and effort to find a decent pair of leather surfboard seats and then dying them isn't much less than ordering new seat covers from katskins or the like. I just need to bring my door panels to Lowe's or something and find a paint sample that matches to send off to a leather shop for pricing.

Did this today tho

Got the car washed today. Just gotta clean interior up and put the under tray back in. Had a piece of cardboard under the car looking for any water leaks from the reroute but seems like I’m good so far.

The vinyl is what comes stock. Canvas is a much nicer material, it is a material that you would make clothes out of kinda. I have robbins canvas, it's expensive but I would never go back to vinyl. It is very upscale look and feeling. Some people put top conditioner on theirs, I never have and South Carolina heat and sun is brutal. I get about 8 years out of a canvas top.

I'm a little biased but I say tan top too. As for canvas vs vinyl, one of the pros I haven't seen brought up yet is that canvas tops with glass windows dgaf what temperature it is outside when you lower or raise it (as long as it's dry), whereas vinyl tops (or any top with a plastic window) shouldn't be raised or lowered below around 40° F/5° C to avoid cracking them. The biggest con for canvas (other than price) is that they're more maintenance intensive, they need to be hand washed every 2-3 months, UV treated every 6-12 months, and can stain.

I vote tan. Black tops can be unbelievably bland and suck any character out of the car. I wouldn't have even glanced at my car had it been fitted with a black top.
>>
>>28878606
Also if you live in a sunny hot climate, the tan tops stay way cooler in the sun as well. Canvas also will absorb marginally less heat vs vinyl too.
>>
>>28878610

I get what you mean. I put my car in ChatGPT and asked it to make the roof black. I think tan looks better especially with these color wheels.

I think tan vinyl is the one I’ll go with. Canvas maintenance sounds a little more of a hassle. I think canvas has a better look than vinyl tho.

NC3 is the best looking, I'd pay the extra for the NC3, or consider buying a bumper if I found a Competition Yellow in the NC2
>>
>>28882269
Here's an overview copied from miata.net
NC1 needs the front mud guard wheel arch piece L and R , that piece is the same for 09-13, the under tray shows the same part for all years NC.
NC1-> NC3 is almost a direct swap. You do NOT need to buy headlights anymore. All you need is a $150 part from RS Factory stage who came up with them, Rev9 Imports them. It's a little garnish piece that fills in the gaps by the headlights. NC1 needs the front mud guard wheel arch piece L and R , that piece is the same for 09-13, the under tray shows the same part for all years NC.
NC3 bumper fits onto NC2 no problem, the foam underneath needs to be shaved. Actual fog lights are the same but require new brackets underneath to secure to the bumper. Under tray and wheel well linings from NC2 fit with the NC3, requires an additional piece for each corner by the wheels.

Should I buy an NA?
>>
>>28884180

Hinges on whether you can wrench or not. They're old cars now. They all need work to be reliable "out of town" cars, and it will be significantly more affordable if you can do most of it yourself. NBs are pretty much there too. If you can't, I would suggest NC or ND instead.
>>
>>28884273
I don’t know if I can’t, but I haven’t so far.
I would think that I could put up with that if I park it in a parking garage or park off-street somewhere.
NBs and NCs appeal to me as well, but I of course want the pop-up headlights.

Apparently the PPF needs to be at a certain distance related to the frame rails so that the transmission is correctly aligned to prevent noise and increased wear.

My car makes tranny noises when accelerating so i am looking up information since this might be the cause.

Get a straight edge (a ruler, something skinny and flat like a serpentine belt tension tool, etc) and hold it flat to the frame rail with a jack, and one end of the straight edge going underneath the transmission where the PPF bolts to it. Loosen the three PPF bolts (but don't remove them. two big long ones, and one small one under the shifter). With another jack, raise or lower the transmission until the distance between the PPF and your straight edge is 60-72 mm and tighten the bolts down. Pic related has the torque specs.

quick question for anyone familiar with the climate control unit on an na
how does the vent selector cable stay attached to the bracket arm? i thought for years something broke off the cable because it won't stay in but looking at pictures of replacements there's nothing missing
it just drops out of the hole in that arm. there's nothing to keep it there

the bracket that holds the sheath isn't broken last time i checked

In that case drilling may be the best option. Another thing to try would be lubing up the cable, get some oil or graphite or something like that in it. Dunno how (in)flexible that cable is, but I suspect that it's building up enough resistance to cause it to flex too much and pop the stud out of the socket. Evidently the factory thought they could save the extra cost of having something to hold the stud in place.

another question that's been bugging me forever since i've been driving these for 15 years
the headrest speakers in the NA
most upgrades you buy are 4 ohm speakers. i can intermittently get them working but i think most head units can't handle the amperage in the rear channel for 4 rear speakers at 4 ohms. i didn't do well in electronics physics so i may be messing something up but i think they're supposed to be wired in parallel if you upgrade and the stock speakers are 8 ohm or something?
lately my head unit has been going into protection mode and i can't find if it's shorting out somewhere. it worked for a while disconnecting the passenger side headrest speakers but now it's intermittent again.
on a different tangent i was planning on installing an old pioneer head unit with casette player i found in my grandfather's garage, but that only has 8 wires, so i'm not sure if i can swing that. i don't really care about front/back balance/fade so maybe i can just do front and rear in series

Depends on the price difference where you live. In Oz I'd pay the $3K extra to get the top of the line RF over the base, but I'd pick the base softtop as the upgrade just isn't worth it.

How hard is it to get an NB wheel stud in? Tyre guys broke the stud (said it was already cross-threaded...) and now it's on me to fix it or take to a mechanic. I got the stud out pretty easy but I haven't been able to get the aftermarket one I got locally in, I suspect it's slightly too big? I've been trying to use a D clamp to get it in and no love so far.
Have an OEM one coming in the mail the hopefully goes in easier.
>>
>>28887533
Throw that shit away. So much bad information in it.
>>
>>28888799
Not gonna happen without a press. You need tons of force to put the stud in, not pounds
>>
>>28888799
>>28888849
get a lug nut you're willing to sacrifice, and a washer. lube up the threads and back and front of the washer and tighten the lug nut to pull the stud on.
make sure the washer is centered as some lug studs may get wider at the base and if the washer blocks it, it could possibly crush that wider bit. While you're tightening it, if it suddenly increases in resistance, loosen the nut and check the washer to ensure this isn't happening.

oh and make sure it's an open ended lug nut. put the flat side of the nut against the washer to spread the force out over more surface area.
if you have a closed end nut, stack a pile of washers on and make sure those are centered too.
>>
>>28888853
Not on a Mazda but I've used that method successfully. Like you stated (but not shown) put the outer flat side of an open nut on the inside so you push against the washers more evenly.

Buy a wheel stud installer bearing and a sacrificial open ended lug nut, so much easier. Literally just zap her home with an impact and you're done.

If Mazda was to consider an update to the ND, I would prefer if they Just did a reskin to keep costs down, much as they did from the NA to NB models. The architecture isn't broken; why fix it?

Quick update: The after market stud that came up on the part finder had a slightly too large radius, I tried with the OEM stud and it went in much easier, which is to be expected as it was the correct size.

Online part guides are rubbish.

Bolsters look immaculate. Those seats are worth stupid money now. About US$1250-$2500 each. So, you've still got them?

Do I buy a 15k prht nc car with enkeis that's 15 hours away or do I buy an 11k car that's stock but that's 30 hours away (so would need transportation of like 1.2k)? Both have 90k miles.
>>
Just drove the NB on the interstate through the city that's also a trucking corridor. 75-90 mph on chink tires from prev owner blasting between semis with the top down in moderate traffic. People in random cars kept trying to play, some Kia did a flyby on me when I was already going 90, just like old times.
I've had miats 12 years now and it never fails to make me laugh. My heart is pounding. That's what I like in a car. What a rush.

I seriously thought about getting one, cutting a hole in the top for my head, and then covering it with a tupperware bowl or something, but then how would it fold? My next best option is the NA with stock seats since I can see over the windshield and could just wear goggles. They're starting to talk about the future NE, so I went to my city's local zoroastrian church to make a donation in hopes of ahura mazda enlightening the engineers to consider dysmorphic, tall people.

Such is the life of being a human ferret.

Do these Cobalt systems do any actual baffling or should I just pick a stock muffler for 40 quid?

I picked up an NB a couple of weeks ago and it had three different brand of tyre, each one cheaper than the last. Buying off old people can be good because they usually do semi regular servicing but fuck are they cheap otherwise. "old school" means getting a new tyre from the wreckers.
>>
>>28892517
I got mine in January from a boomer lady. Garbage old chinese tires. Good for doing slides, but they're really old and cracked.
Air filter had lots of plant stuff in the pleats. PCV valve obviously need replacing, there was oil staining the valve cover all around it. Rat poison in the engine bay and under the seats with a mysterious grounding issue and only one speaker that works, hmm. Otherwise it's tip-top.
Overall excellent deal, people pay $10k for this, I paid $4k flat.
I guarantee it's on the original clutch, suspension, bushings, fuel filter, and trans/diff fluids from '98 though. Could be worse.
>>
>>28892517
>each one cheaper than the last.
How do you know each wasn't more expensive than the last?
>>
>>28892529
At least you can often just clean the PCV and replace the rock hard grommet (don't let it fall in hehe) a lot of the time. The one I brought actually had scraped bit off the plug leads that only in hindsight occurred to me was from mice. I haven't seen any other evidence of them though and no bad smell from the vents, it's a bit weird.

>>28892545
This is true, they might have worked their way up from the $50 price bracket to $80
>>

I've just got an NB and I'm working through the baselining process. The accessory belts are looking pretty aged so I'd like to replace them, I would also like to inspect the timing belt. My understanding is I have to remove the valve cover, which would require a new valve cover gasket right? My only other car is an old Rav and that definitely needed a new gasket by the time the cover was off.
>>
>>28894065
>My understanding is I have to remove the valve cover, which would require a new valve cover gasket right?
Yes you have to remove the valve cover. I'm not even sure if you technically *have to* replace the gasket but it's super cheap and they tend to crack and leak as they age. It doesn't make the job any harder.
>>
>>28894068
You're right, I'm being a bit of a cheap skate. The previous owner had the gasket replaced not toooo long ago.

>>
>>28894065
There is a plastic cover on the front you can take off to look at the belt.
>>
>>28894065
You will need a valve cover gasket and a tube of oil resistant RTV for the cam corners. If you do a timing belt, make sure to also purchase a new tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and water pump minimum, I would recommend cam and crank seals at the same time too. There's a blank off cap on the backside of the head, behind the exhaust cam that I would also recommend replacing while the valve cover is off since you can just whack it out from the backside. If it's an NB2, the VVT solenoid needs to come off too so you'll also want those gaskets and o rings, and the copper washers for the oil feed pipe banjo bolt.
