Buying another scoot tomorrow! '03 Malaguti F18 with only 4k miles. I think I am starting to develop a problem...
>>
I'm really considering buying the poojet smc 390... I really like supermotos and I want one as my only vehicle. I was considering converting a crf 300l, but I live in an EU shithole and I could get in trouble for doing that. The new drz is expensive and it doesn't have a 6th gear. And I'm too short for a bigger supermoto.
>>
The wife wanted to ride this weekend, and I don't have a seat for her on my bike, so we piled on the grom she is learning on. Every stoplight was a drag race, taking off as fast as we could to not get run over by a minivan. It was fun racing up to top gear on surface roads on the way to lunch. 5th was useless, not enough torque to move our fat asses. Now the snow is back and bikes slumber again.
Thank you for reading my blog post.
>>
>>28864296
I used to have a small 125cc and it was fun riding with girls, lots of good memories
>>
>>28864216
You could just get a used older bike you know?
>>
>>28864317
which one? We don't have a lot of used options here. The only used Supermotos I can find are 125cc and the DRZ 400, but I don't want a carbed bike because I'm poor as dirt and I would rather have the lower fuel consumption of EFI.
>>
>>28864318
If you just want something reliable there is the Yamaha XT660x
alternatively there are of course the KTM 690s, if you are willing to part with the supermoto optics the 690 Duke is a real protip and in many ways better than the SMCRs while generally costing less.
>>
>>28864328
>>28864318
Or get a 2-cylinder like the KTM 990, Aprilia Dorsoduro or Ducati Hypermotard.

Their bikes seem comfy, look cool and sound cool but they're slower than muscle cars, some hot hatches and even much cheaper SV650. It's sad.

I think 3.5 second to 60mph is pretty fast
>>
>>28864544
>they're slower than muscle cars
not really, plus speed *feels* faster when you're on a bike compared to being in a steel cage on wheels. you *feel* the speed instead of merely watching it through a windscreen.

Pan America does it in 3.5
Nightster does it in 3.9, cope speed (with an ECU flash) in 3.6
The fastest cruiser is the pan America ST, 0-60 in 4.5, which for the record I also think is plenty fast
Compared to the top trim ford mustangs that do it in 3.5-3.7 depending on trim
>>
>>28864575
The fastest cruiser is the LOW RIDER ST had a little brain fart and retyped the same thing.
>>
>>28864576
>>28864575
>>28864572
Anyway I also misremembered, CW got the low rider ST to go 0-60 in 4.2, not 4.5.

For the same cost as an sv650 you could buy a gently used gsxr1000 and go 0-60 in 2.3 seconds
Probably you (particularly) would do that directly into a brick wall, but you could
>>

SV650 comes in restricted and proper (and lots of other things). Don't get a restricted one because it will piss you off and everyone that ownes it after you.

Harleys being "slow" is entirely relative to how giga fast sport bikes are. They are definitely fast enough for people who are not specifically speed enthusiasts. The weird intersection of Harley enjoyers and speed enthusiasts also exists and they can make Harleys do unnatural things, though I absolutely do not understand it.

Can anyone recommend some tyres for a CB500X?
90% of my riding is just commuting, so I mostly care about longevity and wet performance, but don't want to completely give up the option for occasional dirt roads.
I'm still on the stock Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour after 24,000km / 3 years, but they're getting near the wear indicators. They've been fine, but they don't inspire much confidence in the rain and their performance in mud is "dying alone in the woods" tier.

The last time I spoke to my mechanic he recommended the Pirelli Scorpion Trail II. Are they my best option?

I can't imagine those being any better than the mixtour in the mud. I have the trailmax mission and I'm very pleased with the off road performance and they're also decent on road and they seem to be lasting well, I ride year round in all weathers and they're still good in the rain.

Is a Ninja 250R a good first track bike?
Moved to a new city with a track that does motorcycle track days (NOLA Motorsports Park). Really want to give it a go, but I need a bike for it.
There are 5 Ninja 250Rs (all late-90s and early-00s models) in my area that I can get for under $2k with a title and running. Should I get the best one and go?
A little worried because they use scooter tires, at least those are the tires avaliable online in their size.

>>
>>28865077
Yeah you can use them fine, the tire situation can me annoying, but any practice is good practice.
My biggest recommendation would be, make sure the engine stays in operating temp.
Make sure the engine oil is replaced by hours if you're tracking the bike. And make sure the coolant is good. A lot of coolant is anti-freeze bias instead of cooling bias.
Check the forums and see what they recommend.
If you add any water, make sure it's distilled.

I have torched the lower shock mount that much that one side is starting to bend slightly, burnt away whats left of the collapsed bushings so might have room to hack away at it

Cutting the shock a good idea? (just the lower mount end) its fucked and i have a replacement

These are basically different flavors of neo cafe racers built in the 80s and 90s, dual sport engines in street frames with finicky carbs and external oil reservoirs. They are pretty cool in the twisties for a chill spirited ride

I have a sneaking suspicion that honda wanted to move back to cheaper lighter singles for dailies since they had this and the cb250rs that has the same single settup with twin ported exhaust in the 80s. They tried the ft500 single in the states as well. 250rs was making the same hp as the 286 engines of today but weigh a bit more. I really like the 286cc single, it has limitations but it is solid so it is impressive the 250 singles back then were putting out these numbers.

my honda is an 1989 125 single, does 100 mph and it was one of the slowest of the market. Nowadays it's cuckbike galore except for higher tier bikes.
that cb 250 looks to compete with the kawi cs 250, which I love but never seen one
>>28865277
it's cool but kind of heavy, it's the same bike as the 400 but with a 250 engine. That 400 is one of my faves and on the list^tm of bikes to try

It was an era of vtwins. Singles were a hard sell since people had money.
>honda is an 1989 125 single, does 100 mph
It is a bit unfare to compare a two stroke to efi.
The newer 286 on the cb300r can reach that but only with reflash with premium gas, velocity stack, slip on to remove the cat, and changed sprocket ratios. It isn't comfortable at all at stock peak of 93mph downhill. The engine is restricted on exhaust and airbox too mainly for noise.

The air-cooled single was designed for a dirt/dual purpose bike, the engineering team targeted 25 NM of torque across the rpm range, starting as low as they could get it. And they got it at 2,000 RPM.
The pure street versions happened because Japanese kids were building British-retro styled bikes out of the dual purpose bikes. That's a market, and as they are parts-bin bikes it was cheap to put into production.
If I lived on a tiny urbanized island I would want one too.

oh that for sure, but i'd need to commission more stuff for that.I only have this one so far.
If i had all my DIY stuff here after the move i could easily make one myself, it's just a simple moudl and you just need to mix some silicone in the right colors and drop it inside...i have no idea why nobody makes them by hand on small orders like on etsy or something, i'd happily pay 15 bucks for a custom one and besides printing the mould and mixing the silicone it's a very quick and easy job to do

I crashed hard in my youth, and lived to be old to tell the tale.
Luckily, now that the Sacklers aren't around to push opioids on everyone the med profession has developed some effective pain meds, so I'm comfortable. Also:
Tires are light-years better than they were in the 1980's when I crashed. Brakes are better. ABS is the shit, lemme tell you. Overworking inadequate brakes on a long downhill touge is the root cause of my crash.
And... Gear. I wasn't wearing much. I have an H-moov airbag backpack now and if I was wearing it then even over a T-shirt I would have been mostly annoyed, not injured.
Anyone who tells you helmets sucked in the 1970's and '80s is an idiot. My Snell '75 helmet was AWESOME and the reason I am here today.
Riding is still fun.

The only problem with the Chinese one's is that they use the smaller valve made for life vests. I've watched the videos and they fill fast at first, but the tailbone fills slow as the pressure falls in the bottle.
I've read that replacing the standard gas cartridge with a larger one fills the whole thing faster, but I havn't seen a demonstration.
The Ali Express bags have gotten so cheap I'm tempted to order one just to try it, if I do I'll post boring webm's of myself pulling the cord and puffing up using different sized tanks.

Why are motorcyclists such coping extra chromotards? This is a serious question - I’ve ridden a dirt bike, even rode a motor cycle. Went fast both times, I get that part. Because it feels way more fun wearing no helmet. I can do 45mph on my slowfag 150cc dual sport and I get more of an adrenaline rush than doing 160 on my busa in a helmet. I dont personally do it, but that's why. I once went riding with this Puerto Rican harley rider at work and the idiot never wore a helmet, then a pebble fell from a truck and went straight into his eye and the idiot was so stunned by it he went swerving off the road into a grass patch, he was only doing 45mph and hit grass otherwise he would've died doing that on the freeway. I mention he's Puerto Rican since you don't picture them as harley riders typically. More of a white boomer divorcee thing.

I got new BT46's to replace them, with the intention to sell the bike afterwards, but here I am years later, still unable to sell the bike. I love it too much.
And I still refuse to believe it's running at its best. I will sink money and time into the bike forever until it's where I believe it should be.

I have 3 bikes.

Each similar to each other, but offer totally different experiences and different engine configurations.

One is a sport tourer, the second a open class sport bike, and the final being a true enthusiast race bike with lights for the street.

If I want to go out and about long distances comfortably or plan to take a passenger then I choose the sport tourer.

If I want to run some errands by myself or pick something up that can fit in my trunk or if I just have an itch to ride a featherweight that requires very little effort to ride then I take the open class sport bike.

If I have no real objective to complete, don't have a passenger, and want to enjoy my passion in its purest form filled with enthusiasm then I choose racebike with lights.

Sometimes I just flip a coin a few times or rng a number between 1 and 3.
Sometimes I choose a new one every time I go out to ride.
Sometimes I pick the least ridden one just to keep the circulation fresh
Sometimes I just ask friends or family which one I should take out for conversation sake.
Sometimes it's just as simple as eeny meany miny moe.

Get a heat gun and set it to low and warm the area where the dent is. Then you can use either glue sticks or special plunger bodywork tool(s) to slowly coax the metal back to its original shape. You only get 1 shot at this so take your time, also don't buy cheap temu shit for this esp glue sticks because then you risk damaging the paint / decal of the tank.

Bodyshop might only charge you 50-150 bucks to do it depending on location.

I dont want to spend $5-10k for a newer bike.
I was thinking of grabbing a classic 80's to mid 2000 bike that i can fix up.
Any recommendations for something that wont have the engine screaming past 40mph?
I originally looked at the s40/savage, and nighthawk 750 fours, magna v45-65.
Or is it not worth it and i'll be replacing rubber parts instead of riding?
>>
>>28865972
Is there such a thing as a gen-1 sv650 without a dent? Suzuki built it such that falling off the side stand dents the tank.
Enjoy your Curvy SV, Anon.
>>
>>28866588
S40 is no-power, worse than Honda Shadow kind of noPower.
Magna can have cam wear issues but I forget the details...
Nighthawk 750 is a true classic and if you find one that runs well and doesn't leak (well, they all leak oil from the head gasket but that just means you wash the bike regularly) then buy it and enjoy one of the greats in UJM motorcycling.
>>
>>28866478
no, thats a stripped down R6, there was a beginner version called the FZ6S which had a 77hp detuned engine.
And you can convert it back or engine swap it if you want. Its also more upright seating.
But dont look at hp stuff, look for weight and how discliplined you are. Jerky throttles are a new riders worst nightmare.
>>28866593
Yeah i see a good amount of them but a lot are over 30k miles.
I always wanted a nighthawk since the 250 was so comfy during the exam.
And they have hydraulic lifters on some models.
+ center stand
>>
>>28866588
Xjr1300. Buy the cleanest one you can. Spend your time riding instead of fixing.
>>
>>28866600
That's a very robust engine. Despite being air-cooled, there's no reason it won't go 100k miles.
>>
>>28866392
DR650s aren't exactly comfy either. Should've bought a V-Strom.
>>

in sydney in the 90s to early 00s, the harbour tunnel had cameras that couldn't catch your plates if you went above 200 kph. eventually a little club formed, Through The Tunnel (TTT). iirc if you kept it pegged at 200 through the entirety of the straight section in the tunnel, welcome to the club. it's probably gone up to 300 now if it even still exists.
>>
>>28866617
That's based as fuck, sounds like something straight out of Tokyo Drift.
In Melbourne there was a guy on a small sport bike (I think the story was a Ninja 250) who would keep it absolutely pegged going though the Domain Tunnel every single day on his way to work early in the morning. But all of the speed cameras pointed backwards, so they couldn't get his plates. So eventually they set up a roadblock at the exit of the tunnel just for him.

>it's probably gone up to 300 now if it even still exists
There are bikes that can hit 300, is anyone game enough to try it though?
>>
>>28866620
i think it was mostly for cars. it was all unofficial but some people like to brag, those kind of people happily got interviewed by a current affair lol. cops probably cracked down on it because of that.
guy on the bike sounds very familiar, did he get caught because they caught a part of his plates while being chased and they went to his house after figuring out the rest of his plates?
>>
>>28866616
I'm 19 years old so I didn't want some boomer ass ADV bike. The DR650 is just a big dirt bike with turn signals so it has a more ageless appearance.
>>
>>28866633
NTA, and I own a dr650. I don't really see the 800de as a "boomer-ass" bike, as you put it. While it is 150lbs heavier than the big bore dr, the de has the better suspension by far.

>there was a beginner version called the FZ6S which had a 77hp detuned engine.
you're thinking of the FZ6R, the FZ6S is just used to denote the non-naked variant. The FZ6S/N both make 98hp
Throttle isn't all that jerky, especially compared to the rest of the 650 class.
Still agree it's not a great first bike though. It's a fat hunka metal and a bit more specialized for sport-touring vs the all rounders like an MT-07/SV650 that can better guide you to what you might like/dislike about riding

Single cylinder cruisers are some of the most uncomfortable shit you can buy. Everything is working against each other. Even at 300cc it feels wrong, it has the body and suspension for highway cruising but not enough torque and not enough top end.
