What would happen if I swapped an M109R engine into an NB?Am I retarded?
>>28869010That sounds pretty sick to me; nothin' wrong with that. Have you considered the Porsche/Harley engine?
Extremely.
>>28869010How will you eitherA: convert the rear end to chain driveOr B: Mount the engine to a transmission? What you should do is swap it into a Tractor Supply mini Jeep. They already have turn signals and a horn and getting it titled and plated would probably cost less than what you want to do.
>>28869023>swap it into a Tractor Supply mini Jeep.Oh hell yeah I want to see that!
>>28869023If you mean make the car a chain drive to couple with the engine, this bike is already shaft drivento begin with.I don't know that that makes this easy, but it's something.
>>28869025>this bike is already shaft drivento begin with.Goddamn that must be one helluva bike. Still, you'd have to have a one-off custom driveshaft made, right?
>>28869025I didnt know it was shaft drive. But that tiny little tube might but be sturdy enough to move the car. Or stop it. You have to consider stopping with these kinds of whacky projects too. I feel like the weight of the car can also affect it once you let off the gas.
>>28869031I have one, and I instantly lost all interest in any other bike. But yeah, I'd probably have to make a new shaft. Also, what If I hard mounted it, mid-engine placement?
>>28869037>Also, what If I hard mounted it, mid-engine placement?Oh hell yeah. Not my thing but from an engineering standpoint that's hot. I'm hard just thinking about it.How would you do the transmission? How would that work? Sounds expensive.I think I'm hot shit going to 7 in my miat lol.
>>28869043I have no idea yet, I'm asking Google Gemini for help.
why dont you just buy a v-rod?
get ye a suzuki cappuccino and a turbo ‘busa
>>28869054M109R has more torque and is kawaii.>>28869056I hadn't thought of a Cappuccino. I could cut a hole in the hood and have the V twin sticking out.
>>28869010https://www.pembleton.co.uk/t24Not completely crazy.
>>28869010Cool idea. Have you seen "Reed make car" on YouTube? He's done a cbr1000 engine swap.Hayabusa swap
>>28869043Imagine simply using the transmission that's already part of the case
>>28869145But how would you shift it? That seems like it would be fairly expensive to rig up.
>>28869148With a simple mechanical linkage that attaches where the normal shift lever goes. OP is not the first person to put a bike engine into a car. Superfast Matt comes to mind, he's done it several times and documented the process on YouTube
>>28869150I'm well aware it's a thing, people have been doing busa swaps into Smart cars for 20+ years. But that doesn't sound reasonable or cheap. Do they have the clutch on a paddle? It just seems cool, but shitty.
>>28869152>it requires work beyond plopping it into a matching bracket, therefore it is impossibleQuitter talkI will stop replying to this thread now, you're clearly more interested in whining than finding solutions
>>28869010That would be really cool. Make sure you get a donor with a working second gear. The M109 had a bad design for the first few years. DYORYou may as well turbo it if you're doing all that work. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoTU9_iCGa6hoqTLr3I-HhXlffhfs9t8Y
OP here. The situation has evolved. I have devolved into chatbot psychosis, because Google Gemini keeps telling me that I am smart and that this will work.I am going to weld a custom frame, sort of Ariel Atom style, very go-karty.Two M109R engines up front. One mounted backwards.Typically, headers are on the right, and shaft comes out the left. Engine on the right will drive rear wheels, with a long drive shaft. Engine on the left will drive front wheels, with a short drive shaft, and an upside down diff. Both front and rear will use an intermediate shaft for equal length CV axles, because drive shafts will be off the vehicle centerline.Headers from each engine will be facing outward, and exhaust can run down each side of the frame.I can use a bellcrank to handle shifting, where one gets pushed and the other gets pulled, since one transmission will be facing the wrong way. Bellcrank actuated by a single shift lever (sequential stick shift, since bikes are sequential).M109R engine is semi-dry sump design, so might be ok on avoiding oil starvation when cornering, but if need be I can scavenge parts to make a shared dry sump system.I have never done any custom car mods before, so this is going to be a long, long time of learning how things work first, but I am a machinist with years of experience, and access to CNC machines at work (can be used on weekends).Code name M218RR.
>>28869034Good thing Miatas are equipped with brakes at the factory.
>>28869351They are? I've been sticking my left shoe out the opened door and scraping it on the ground. I go through a lot of shoes...Obviously joking, but in my 20s I used to kinda actually do that as a silly stunt in my NA, I'd drive down the main road with my sandal on the ground. Good times, could've chopped my leg off.>>28869201This is art, mista White!
>>28869010>Am I retarded?Most assuredly
>>28869201Please make the frame first before cutting up a miata. That way a good car isn't ruined when this project stalls out.
>>28869474why would this stall out? honestly, like probably 3 solid weekends of labor. should be ready before the summer season.
>>28869500Have you even made something even remotely to this scaled before? How are you with wiring? Having to integrate two different engine harnesses and ecu's to play nicely with each other as well as the car's chassis harness?Do you have a local driveshaft shop or are you going to have to send out for them to be made? What axles are you using? What front hubs and knuckles are you using to make it awd? What front suspension are you using to work with the FWD knuckles on one end and the miata's mounting locations on the other end? How are you going to make the clutches work? Are they cable or hydraulic clutches on the bike engines?>oh it's just three weekends of work should be done before summerThat's why I think it'll stall out, you're not taking this amount of work seriously and the first major setback will derail it.
>>28869018a hd dealer let me, a 18yo who only had a honda rebel at the time, let me test ride a vrod it was real cool and made me feel cool
for some reason i want a miat with a goldwing engine
>>288697361.6 flat 6 ought to be cool. How about a 2.2 triple. Both are shaft drives so ought to be fairly simple to engineer.
>>28869747oh fuckand it's a triumph too, so back to british roadster rootsman why is everyone doing busa swaps, there are so many cool engines in the bike space
>>28869201Thinking about this a litte more since last night.Instead of trying to do things like combine harnesses, ECUs, battery, radiator, gas tank, and everything into one system, I'm imagining just stripping everything off the bike frames, as one unit, and placing each of them onto the custom frame, and running them as two fully independent stock motorcycles with one throttle cable, one shift lever, one clutch cable.Mount each engines radiator in front of it, just like it is on the bike.Mount each gas tank at the rear, where a car's trunk would be, side by side, with extended fuel lines going back up to the front. At the gas station, just fill both tanks.Put each bike's single headlight up front, one on each side, like car headlights. Use the blinkers from one bike only, and connect them to a scavenged blinker stalk. For the dash, just mount both gauge clusters side by side.Limit the weight of the vehicle to about 2x the weight of the bike, or maybe a tiny bit more if absolutely necessary. Stock clutches should be fine. The engine/sensors/ecu/etc shouldn't even know that anything has changed, and they should just run like normal. Like if you made custom motorcycle frame and just moved everything over. Wheel diameter might change, so speedometer might need to be adjusted.
>>28869786Synchronising engines and transmissions without electronic connections is an utter b*.This sounds like you are going towards a chariot setup with two horses. Ben Hurr style.
>>28869798This is essentially what I'm imagining. Doesn't having both sets of wheels on the road kind of force match the RPMs anyway?
>>28869816Shifting is probably the worst to fix. Sitting between the bikes would be an interesting effect.I'm sure that has been done before.
>>28869736consider goldwing swapping a honda acty
>>28869786This is even worse than your first idea.If you own tools, sell them.
>>28869786This has actually done in a production car, with 50's tech though.Makes more sense to just put the 2nd engine in the back though.
>>28869154Seriously wtf. This entire board has that mentality now.>omg how do I make a bracket with a pivot point?!?! This project will never work..
>>28869786Dude.You seriously need to research how they pair engines in motorsports.
>>28869010It would be slower and less reliable. Yes you are retarded.
>>28870721The other thought was one in front one in back, where the engines are turned 90 degrees, so output shaft is parallel to axle, and scavenge axles that are already intended to be used with an engine that is transverse, to hopefully make couplibg easier. Then it's two identical mirrored setups front and rear, but one is upside down. Weight distribution/CG would be better, I guess.>>28870794Ok fine, I will. I skimmed a couple youtube videos on twin engine cars, but I'll dig deeper. Where to start?
>>28870721The push me pull you Minis had seperate gearboxes. All good fun.
>>28870892-shifts even.
>>28870884Why not drive the front wheels with one engine and the rear wheels with the other?
>>28869351I mean forces against the driveshaft and tiny gears inside the engine. They might not be able to hold up the weight of even a miata.
>>28871111I may have explained it badly, but that's actually what I meant.>>28871115Yeah, anything bigger than some kind of kei car would probably be too heavy. That's why I started thinking of a little custom welded go kart frame. This is gonna be like a year of homework before even buying a single component, to make sure I'm not barking up the wrong tree.
>>28871127>That's why I started thinking of a little custom welded go kart frameTRACTORSUPPLYMINIJEEP
>>28869010The motor from a ktm 1290 super Duke r would work better, it's more powerful and already has a drysump.
>>28871115Are you implying that the engine would develop more torque than it and the transmission were designed for, by simple virtue if being mounted in a heavier vehicle? Fascinating.
>>28871221No. I mean when you let off the gas and the weight of the car slams itself onto the components. Your idea would be nice, howbeit
>>28871346>the weight of the car slams itself onto the componentsThe only resistance on the drivetrain when coasting is from the engine... are you implying that the engine makes more torque (a destructive amount) when coasting than when you're on the throttle?
>>28871651OP here. Do you have a brain tumor? He may be referring to, for example, being at high speed and/or going downhill, and putting the vehicle in a low gear and leaving the clutch engaged for engine braking.
