I have a 2005 forester and it is fire, it holds a shit ton of stuff, always starts, is roughed up enough that I don't have to be careful with it, and it's a manual so I am set in the winter, and can totally fuck it up if I'm stupid enough B)

but thats because i'm convinced that people just treated them like a honda or toyota. Subarus are not tolerant of owners who fuck around on maintenance. had 4 cars from this era and none of their HG leaked on me, and i don't fuck around with shitty maintenance habits.

head gasket failure was on the SLS graphite coated head gaskets in the ej251 and ej253 before 2008 (?) accelerated by not changing coolant but still happens eventually, fix is to use p/n 11044AA642 off the ej255. slightly drops compression cause the MLS gaskets are thicker but makes no significant difference. get it done before you warp your heads.

if the maintenance schedule was done, greatly reduces the likelyhood.

all of them got over 200k miles with no headgaskets

I have a third gen from 2010, the last year they had before they swapped engines from the EJ.

Bought it used about 8 years ago with 90K in the odometer, it's now just about to hit 200K, but it hasn't been smooth sailing, the coolant system went to shit and I mean the coolant system. First the radiator went, then the water pump (which I was told was indestructible, my ass it was) then when a hose went I just had them swap the thermostat and the overheating sensor cause at this point why the fuck not? it's not like it was gonna cost me hundreds more in repairs at this point, all problems blew on me on the road, all of them came with overheating spells leaving me on the side of the road, all of them within the same year.

At this point I'm just saving money for a new car and driving this piece of shit until it blows up on me again, I hope it lasts the next 2 years so I can at least claim it lasted the full decade
