Man I made I rookie mistake today, I got my power train from the Camaro into the nova and as I was setting the shifter cable length/tension it just wouldn’t play nice. Works in neutral, shirt shifts 1st. Works in first, short shifts Park. So in and so forth messed with it for like 30 minutes with the wife rowing the gears before I finally caved and googled it.Turns out the b&m mega shifter lever I have on my th350 pretty much only works with the b$m mega shifter, and on top of that the hurst pro-matic is pretty picky too about us its own shift lever and not the GM factory one or anyone else’s. Incredulously I checked with AI and apparently yup this happens quite often. So in gonna migrate the b&m mega shifter over to the nova rather than open my pan and swap levers. On the plus side though my entire wiring harness is done now, wrapped in split loom, looks really nice. Just have to run out and get battery cables and the electrical is done.

I love seeing paperwork like this with cars.
>>28876949wow. looks like it was written up yesterday.
>>28876952There's an entire binder full of papers with things like "2 7.5x15 tires" from Sears in 1976.I got the car from his estate with 63k miles on it now.The first owner was the Seattle Warehousemen Union.

>>28877052yes
>>28877052yeah there are many instances of that.notably the square body 1973-1986
>>28876967damn. the closest thing i found in my dodge was some rego papers belonging to a lady born in 1934. I don't think the people that owned the car before me were related to her though.
>>28877125Also looked up that address, and i'm not even sure if I got the right address since it seems like Lot 4 doesn't exist anymore. Unless that's just what was a house number back then.
>>28877052Have to be careful with this mentality.I could buy a 3rd gen Bronco (1980 model) in 1979.Technically that platform ran until the end in 1996.The body lines were updated but you can still bolt suspension, doors, front clip, shell etc from an '80 onto a '96 chassis. Many here wouldnt have an issue with a FSB being included in /ccg/ but there has to be a limit otherwise it just becomes shitbox general.

Took firebird out on Glendora Mountain road tonight. Firebird shattered every expectation, it cornered beautifully, the brakes were responsive, the steering was nice a firm. It all seemed to come together tonight. One problem that appeared is the power steering overheating. Apparently I need a power steering cooler and should probably get a trans cooler as well
>>28877394very noice

When the power steering started overheating though it quickly became very difficult and i had to stop to let it cool. It was very gratifying as I've been making changes to improve the handling here and there for years and im finally happy with it

>>28877914Im shocked the power steering overheated before the brakes. They were smoking by the end
>>28877937is it running a rack or box?
>>28877946Box. I don't think I'll ever drive at a level I'll notice the difference between box and rack
>>28877951very interesting, many forums i see online people say the difference between a box and rack is night and day, even with the modern borgeson ones which are apparently really good already. but i doubt they're really throwing their car hard like you did.mine still feels a bit sloppy at the 12 o'clock spot despite having it reconditioned and upgraded, but i suspect it's the steering pump given that it's been on the car since factory. Hopefully the new one arrives next week and I'll be able to find out for sure.
>>28878014I ended up getting a close ratio 10:1 box which was a massive improvement over the stock 27:1? Ratio box. One thing i have noticed now is the part where the box bolts to the subframe has a little bit of give to it so i can imagine someone super anal about steering precision can have issues but for what im doing, it's perfectly harmless on my old box i was able to adjust the box to reduce the slop (the service manual will have specs in the inch pound drag the box is supposed to have and such) and that worked great till i wrecked the car and had to get a new box. I absolutely love my tight ratio box. Makes donuts and whipping around corners a breeze without all the drama of flailing the wheel around
>>28878024>27:1? Ratio boxdamn, that high of a ratio is usually for manual steering applications. Dunno what my ratio is but it's 3.5 turns lock to lock
>>28878041Does yours overheat and ruin your drive?
>>28878045nah haven't really pushed it yet, because it's currently got a weird problem where if i take off from a stop and turn at the same time (like if you were stuck behind someone that didn't realise the light went green and were changing lanes to get around them) the steering gets really hard and then suddenly gets easy again. i've replaced the clamps on the return line to make sure absolutely no air can get in the lines, but that didn't seem to make much, if any, difference. It makes it interesting going around a roundabout though, there's a 50/50 chance the steering will lose power or it works fine.I think once I get the new pump I might see about plumbing in a cooler. They don't need to be very big do they?
>>28878050Oil needs to operate at the intended temp. It needs to be that; not hotter or colder.

>>28878064right. but i also remembered that the exhaust log is right next to the steering box. practically on top of it actually; barely enough room to fit my fist between the box and the log. So it's probably running hotter than usual.
>>28878081Well, if it's probably too hot, then, a cooler will probably make it just right.
>>28878103i was thinking of putting in a thermostat for it...but that's starting to go into overkill territory. Just gonna put a smol cooler, maybe some hard lines to cut down the length of rubber hoses and be done with it.

He didn't even bother replacing those. All he restored was the interior which is very plush but there's still missing door speaker wiring and dad had a pig of a job trying to get the passenger's electric window unstuck because it wouldn't go down when he was driving it home. The auction was originally looking at between $95K - $125K according to the leaflet, but dad was prepared to pay at most 90 for it but I personally think he paid a few thou too much for the state it's in, especially when we already have 4 other projects on the property. are there any open barrel quick disconnects that are big enough to crimp two 12 awg wires into one terminal? the terminals will need to go into a H4 connector/socket.making a headlight relay harness with four lights, but not sure for the grounding wire whether i should string the wire along each socket then terminate to one common ground (option A), or just keep left and right separate (option B).
>>28882358I'd go option B, just because it's simpler and uses less wiring. Also means that you only lose one light should the ground connection go bad.
>>28882363good points. and i also just realised it's probably not a good idea to have the power from all four lights running through that final stretch of wire that's going to the chassis. now i just gotta find a non insulated female qd terminal that can fit two 12 awg wires in...
>>28882370Do also remember that those spade terminals are only rated for a max of 25 or so amps, so even though your wire might take the current, the terminal may not. I doubt you have to worry much if you're just daisy chaining a couple headlights, but just something else to keep in mind going forward. You might as well use thinner wire and make life easier for yourself if the terminal can't take the load anyway.

>>28885176Crafting foam is an art form.Dont try to patch it, you need to replace full portions. If the passenger is still good you can use it as a guide to redo the driver base.
Can't believe this bullshit. Finally got everything back together on the Scimitar and went for a test drive, and all was good! I turned around and drove home, and just as I entered the workshop, smoke started billowing out from the engine bay. Amazing. Shut it off and had a quick butchers, and the exhaust manifold and block were caked in oil. I was hoping I had just forgotten to tighten the valve cover up, but alas, 'twas coming from the oil pressure gauge pipe; I forgot to route it above the valve cover, and so the exhaust manifold was able to melt a small hole in it. B-e-a-yootiful.
Now, the obvious solution to this problem is to buy or fabricate a new length of pipe, preferably in metal and not fucking *plastic*, but I am already too deep in this terrible car, and not only could I not find any info on what thread pitches the gauge and block were, but the only commercially available replacement was some fancy stainless steel braided line that was way around £70. Luckily I am the proud owner of a cheap amazon soldering iron, and so I was able to bodge the fuck out of this and save myself the cost and hassle of buying and fitting a new oil gauge line. First I cut off a small section of pipe from the end, then split in along it's length and slipped it over the pipe like a sleeve, directly over the hole. I then used the soldering iron to melt the sleeve into the existing pipe, creating the god awful mess you see before you. Is it pretty? No. But does it work? Fuck yes. Bullet dodged, and line now neatly tucked above the valve cover.
>>28886102Slap some rtv on it for good measure.
>>28886105I was tempted to go with some RTV, then heat shrink over the top to contain it all and make it look *somewhat* neat rather than a goopy mess. We'll see.
>>28886120I'd be more concerned about how hard/brittle did that plastic become after soldering it?
>>28886132Feels about the same as it did before, so I'm not too worried. Time will tell if this was a good idea, but it works for now, so good enough.
>>28886162can't stick an electronic gauge and sender in there?
>>28885716That looks pretty good.>>28885842Roger that. Thanks for the tip; I'll make sure to watch some youtube videos.
>>28886270Probably, but I'm not willing to spend anymore money on this car, as it already owes me thousands, and the other bodges from the previous owner are *way* sketchier. My fix has worked (for now), and that's good enough for me currently.
anyone ever ran a brake booster vaccum pump?my cam is quite radical and my brake booster isnt helping i m thinking of going for a leed brake vaccum pump has anyone got feedback on those?

>>28886645I have a length of 3/16 NiCopp hardline, but I can't seem to find just the smiths gauge fine thread fittings, nor the fittings for the mystery coarse thread on the block, which means I'd need to buy something pre-made. The only available pre-made pipe with the correct fittings for this car will cost significantly more than my fix, which was *free*.If it's any consolation, these posts are how I did the fuel pump piping.>>28874799>>28874810>>28874816>>28874827

>>28887248All you need are new compression collars and your existing fittings. The copper capillary tube is the same size as the plastic versions.
>>28887271The existing pipe and fittings aren't made to use compression fittings at all, though, the plastic pipe is just push fit over a small hollow needle which is a fair bit smaller in diameter than the 3/16 hardline I have, and the 3/16 pipe is too thick to fit through the existing nut. I have no idea what fittings or plastic pipe the previous guy used, but it's nothing I've come across before.

how small can hacksaw blades get? I need a really smol one, ideally less than 6mm in height because I'm trying to cut out slots in the terminal holes/sockets in this fuse box so I can fit female 9.5mm wide terminals for relays. All the holes are currently 6.3mm wide, but I need to widen the center ones to 9.5mm wide. If not a hacksaw blade, what's something else that's short enough to get in and let me saw out some material?
>>28888322You want blades for a "coping saw".
>>28888322>modify a hacksaw or multitool blade and do it by hand>use heat on a butter knife or an actual hot-knife to melt your way through>dykes to cut it out and then hand file it

>>28890060That poor Buick.

>>28890547The drive side
>>28890550Still needs a tad more shim.
>>28890564Your talking Pinon depth or backlash?
>>28890568aren't shims only for depth, not backlash?looks like the gear's too close to the pinion
>>28890192then youd look like a spic.these colors are just straight ass.
>>28890626Yes there’s shims behind the carrier bearings. So this is a used gear set I’m installing in a different housing with new bearings and seals. The pinion depth actually measured shallow with the dial indicator but the pattern came out as such. Also my backlash right now is between .006 and .007 so I think if subtract .003 from the left and ad .003 to the right it should pull the pattern off the toe a smidge on the drive said and I think I would be okay with that pattern
>>28890550Opened up backlash to .009 and it shifted the pattern a tiny bit off the toe
>>28890927Probably as good as it’s gonna get with used gears I’m guessing
>>28877056Funny because that's the exact model I was referring to kek
>>28877253Not really. The 1st gen RX7 was a 70s parts bin special, live rear axle, drum brakes on rear, steering box etc. Later years having power windows and rudimentary fuel injection doesn't change that.
>>28890927Thats functionable but I wouldn't personally be happy with it.Used gearsets sssssuuuuuccccccckkkkkkk to setup.
>>28890937Drums have better heat dissipation. Which is why theyre still preferred in heavy trucks. You can fin the shit out of the outer shell and its 100% cooling, 100% of the time.
>>28890938Yea I messed with it all day yesterday. Ended up cracking the manual open and swing what it says, had a little blurb about used gears being super hard to get correct on the drive side due to wear pattern and to just focus on the coast side. Top left corner looks similar to what I have so fuck it. If it blows it’s time for the 9”
>>288909969" is overrated. The 3 pinion bearings are great but the 8.8" has a larger pinion shaft.Removable carrier is great at the track for swapping ratios on T&T runs but a cover is easier to seal/replace when a leak develops.All.depends on application. And c-clip eliminator kits exist for "those people".I have (2) 9" and (3) 8.8".Haven't decided which way im going on my latest project.
>>28891000This should be a nice little unit all said and done. 3.90 gears and Eaton 30 spline posi character, moser axles and disc conversion. Perfect for mild street
>>28891128I always found 3.90s just a little too steep for street use but not quite enough offroad. I prefer 3.73s or 4.10s.But that also depends highly on transmission and tire size.Good build.liat.overall. What's it going in?
>>28891168Yupp the reality is I cucked out lol. I had like 3.42 or whatever in my Camaro with a th350 and wanted some more gear. The guys at the diff and axle shop asked how I drive the car and when I said I occasionally do like 50+ miles on the highway one way they said 4.10s would be absolutely miserable for that and 3.73 would not be super noticeably for the money I was spending since I was getting a posi at the time too. So they steered me towards the 3.90 as a half measure. It’s goin in my 74 nova with the same th350 and 26.7” tire
>There is no drain plug on a TH400 transmission>you have to drop the pan>and end up getting drenched in Dexronwtf were they thinking?
>>28891231same on my 727. I grabbed a chinese deep pan with a drain plug off of ebay. It's better than I expected.
>>28891240weirdly enough for me an aftermarket pan with plug and stock depth is more expensive than a deeper one with a plug. dunno if i want the deeper one though, bit hard to see in the pic but the stock pan is pretty much parallel with the bottom of the frame rails. I feel like the 2-3/4" pan I'm looking at might be too deep.
>>28891244vey clean under there, nice.
>>28891240>exhaust and pan below frame rails.Been there.Didnt end well.
>>28891260The pan flange itself is below the "frame" rails.
>>28891264Ive never seen long tubes on a vintage (car) that werent the lowest point.
>>28891277It is what it is. There are only two options for long tubes on my car that are somewhat better than the other brands: Dougs or TTI. At stock ride height, they're as close to fine as you can get.
>>28891294Doug designed some good shit.I had some Doug Thorley Tri-Y's on a '69 mustang. That damn thing scraped every speed bump from Mission Beach to Ocotillo.
>>28891231>>28891240Funny I was thinking about getting a diff cover with the drain and fill plugs from like Yukon or whoever for easier serviceability too
>>28891673Well...duh.Why wouldnt you (?)
>>28891681nta but they're like $250
>>28891673I picked up a 4x4 diff cover from SOLID purely because I like the way it looks, and it also has the drain plug. I think it was under $100 when I got it.I painted the logo red :)
>>28891695lmao wait. It doesn't have the drain plug, but it does have the fill plug. You could always drill and tap it because this thing is thick as hell.
>>28891695wow, it certainly isn't a liquid or a gas, that's for sure.
>>28890481The interior was worse. Someone installed an infotainment system.
>>28891695Is it this painful to pull the cover to change fluid? I did this like 4 times before I decided to rebuild my dana 35
>>28891695Theres no drain plug on that diff cover. Only a fill plug.
>>28891231Get an oil extractor. It's like $100 or something but you can suck all the ATF out of the pan before dropping it
>>28891750Hehe>>28891922Nope, super easy.>>28891953You are correct.
>>28891750You lost me.
>>28891922Nah not really. It’s a slight inconvenience but idk if it’s worth 150$For me the hassle was when my classic was my DD so I had to plan a diff fluid change around an off day or whatever when I could let the RTV cure before re-filling. Drain/plug fill plug eliminates that at least. It was more so that I was just worried the fill flush was gonna be fucked on this car but it turned out to be okay
>>28892617Fill plug*****Stay in school kids
I have a question about some changes to my brake system that I made.I replaced a leaky master with one from a newer model with a larger bore diameter, and it made the brake pedal very stiff. Then, later on, I also put in a newer model dual diaphragm booster. This made the beginning of the pedal travel have almost no resistance for about 20-30% while also being very aggressive and twitchy. The brakes are bled. What is causing this? I'm going out there to adjust the pushrod right now to see if that's it.
>>28893203Same anonMaybe the booster is just too strong? They work great at speed, but it takes a lot of pedal control when idling forward to not be jerky and throw me through the window.
>>28893203>I replaced the OEM spec parts with different stuff, now the brakes feel weirdWhoa
>>28893203Did you adjust the air gap between the booster and master cylinder? And also did you happen to go from a disk/drum to a disk/disk or anything? The calving internally is different. But yea there’s an air gap you have to set between the booster and master. You might have too big of a gap. Hell some master cylinders you even have to place a little bullet adapter in the pushrod hole to take up the slack, I did on mine
>>28893203>>28893293
>>28893293>>28893297Ooooh, I'll check that out right now. Thanks
>>28893351Did you happen to switch from a disk/drum master to a disk/disk?
>>28893386I adjusted the booster pushrod on the master side, and I think that solved it. It's still grabby, but the take up is gone. Not so much that drags, of course. In the future, it would definitely be easier to do this outside of the car on the bench with the right tool, but it's done for now.No, old master and booster was disc/drum, and so is the new master and booster. Thanks, bro.
Family friend of ours was having trouble getting his V8 Pilot running, so we've taken it back to our place to diagnose. Turned out to be the voltage regulator, which I re-soldered and got working again, but next problem is that that car has some very peculiar issues that keep adding up, most annoying of which being that it will not start off of the starter; use the hand crank, and it'll fired up on the 1st or second try, but when using the electric starter, it'll just crank and crank and crank until the battery dies. Second issue is that when it is running, it runs like shit. It ran okay-ish first of all, but since it's sat a couple days, it's sort of thrown it's toys out the pram for some reason. I've tried playing with the timing to get it running a little happier, as it was a tad too advanced and trying to backfire with the hand crank, but even though it's a little better now, it'll still try stalling if you don't *very* gently climb onto the throttle. Carb is new and is tuned well, spark plugs are a known good set that were working fine in our own Pilot, and the dizzy is a Stromberg eFire. Anyone got any tip, tricks, or general ideas?
>>28893203larger bore = more pedal effort, less travelsmaller bore = less pedal effort, more travel
With gas over $6 a gallon im considering taking firebird out of commission to finally finish paint. I just have to build up the motivation to tear down the front end again after painstakingly putting it all together
its a really bad idea to buy an early 80s porsche 924 if i have no knowledge or desire to work on it 80 hours a week isnt it
>>28893596>it will not start off of the starter; use the hand crank, and it'll fired up on the 1st or second try, but when using the electric starter, it'll just crank and crank and crank until the battery dies.Sounds like the Ignition Start circuit isn't supplying power to the coil but Ignition Run works. US cars usually have 12v to the coil in Start one way or another (off the starter solenoid, etc) while Run goes through a ballast resistor so that the points only have to deal with about 9v so they last longer. No idea how Bong shit is wired up but I'll bet it's similar in function if not form.As for the running issue sounds like it's idling Lean and a lack of Accelerator Pump shot is causing the stumble. Idle mixtures should be able to be adjusted but the accelerator pump is probably leather or some shit and has shrunk so the carb would need an overhaul to replace that.
>>28894487>Sounds like the Ignition Start circuit isn't supplying power to the coil but Ignition Run works. We thought that too, but we checked for spark when using the starter, and it seems fine, but I'll triple check just in case.>US cars usually have 12v to the coil in Start one way or another (off the starter solenoid, etc) while Run goes through a ballast resistor so that the points only have to deal with about 9v so they last longer. No idea how Bong shit is wired up but I'll bet it's similar in function if not form. The car is is 6v positive earth, but the previous owner had the points and crab dizzy replaced with an eFire electronic ignition unit, and we replaced the original coil that was giving us trouble a couple years ago with a non-ballast coil and removed the ballast resistor completely from the car. Again, ran and started perfectly fine until now, so very bizarre.>idling Lean>accelerator pump is probably leather or some shit and has shrunk so the carb would need an overhaul to replace that.Richening the idle mixture doesn't seem to help the idle quality any, and we bought the Stromberg 97 carb brand new 2 or so years ago, so it shouldn't really need an accelerator pump or overhaul. Modern parts being what they are, it wouldn't surprise me if it *is* fucked now that' it's out of warranty, but I would like to hope that isn't the case... Still, I'll investigate and play with the bits you've mentioned, just the be sure. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it~
