Even Toyobaru is more similar to Mustang than this "Mustang". I doubt if there was any good looking car in the 80's other than Ferraris. Such an ugly decade.

mustang never had a set design before sn197 ate some 'member berries and made mustang a perpetual 60s throwback, before that it had some persistent elements like the triple taillights but took on a new face every gen
same with camaro
imagine, though, a world where the throwbacks also changed with the generations and restylings and current models were referencing foxbody and turdgen resepctively
>>
>>28877607
the mustang was literally an internal war in ford because some dork commie designed the falcon around being a cheap under-acheiver car and another man in a suit said fuck you we're building a v8 sports car using your platform.
they did the exact same formula with the pinto but boomers didn't like it because it didn't look as aggressive as the first gen.
they did the same thing on the fox platform.
every single mustang untill the s197 was just ford taking the cheapest unibody platform economy car they had and throwing a v8 in it, that was the charm of it.
retromodels are a fucking cancer, the last gen camaro before the 2000s one was better aesthetically in every single way and if you disagree I will humbly instruct you how to kill yourself for free.
>>
>>28877637
the mustang was the least worst offender of the 2000s retrotrend

camaro, challenger, pt cruiser, ssr all far worse, ditto gto for using the nameplate when it would've been better off as a buick

the thing is that by the time sn197 rolled in, they didn't have a cheap under-achiever rwd car in the lineup anymore, so they had to carve it out of sn95 guts and gen 1 glory. it's baisically same story as toyobaru except toyota didn't even have a continious lineage going so they had to carve it out of a stolen impreza and a shitty manga.

At the time the Fox Mustang was considered more of a Mustang than the prior Mustang II's which were never really accepted as Mustangs. Nobody had really been happy with the Mustang since 1970 and the 79's were looked on as a welcome return-to-form despite the car not having any design cues beyond the weak nod to the triple tail lights

>The car with or without badging had to say Mustang, it was really important to them. They wanted to see some of the retro if you will, retro cues from the earlier cars. And along that line things that we found were really important to them and that we wanted to stay with. They wanted the chrome pony in the front of the car, they wanted the horse back on the car in a prominent position. They wanted a 3 element tail light, they wanted us to take a look at the side of the car and find out whether or not we could put the character back in the side of the car, the chamfer if you will the reverse C in the side of the car. So we looked at that, we looked at the cockpit of the car versus some earlier models and we wanted kind of a dual cockpit feeling. We wanted a long front and shorter rear in terms of your perception of the car as you looked at it and we sort of took those basics and we think we executed right along the they're looking for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtMSTv10FsE [Embed]
The only Mustang not to have these set design elements is the Foxbody. The SN95 set the wheels in motion for the S197 outright retro design. Ford heavily played on the retro styling cues back in the '90s in ads.
>>28877637
>every single mustang untill the s197 was just ford taking the cheapest unibody platform
What other rwd unibody platform did Ford have other than the DC2 at the time? They used the cheapest available option and redesigned the platform to be cheaper to produce.

At the time the Fox Mustang was considered more of a Mustang than the prior Mustang II's which were never really accepted as Mustangs.
The sales disagree with you, the sold similar #'s to foxes the first 5 years. More people thought the fox was less a Mustang because of the non-mustang styling.

Only aero facelift GTs got the cheese graters, notches and LX hatches had better looking lights IMO. But the point I was making was the foxbody was a more teutonic design in and out and the SN95 was a return to the 1st and 2nd gen core design elements.
>>28878112
At least Ford had a Pony car ready for '05 unlike GM or Chrysler's pathetic assess.
>>
>>28878754
>notches and LX hatches had better looking lights IMO
You and everybody else. For a long time it was common for GT owners to steal LX taillight lenses. Or at least cause them to be stolen. The lenses can be pulled off by hand since they're only held on by some clips and a bit of sealant.
>>
>>28878950
>You and everybody else. For a long time it was common for GT owners to steal LX taillight lenses
Literally.
And trying to get replacements from the junkyard was impossible even 20 years ago bevause some beaner just walked around every day as soon as they opened and popped off the lenses for his brothers body shop.

Chrysler was making a whole new platform with new engines, Ford as typical was just recycling '70s shit until they could no longer get away with it.

This is just cope, the S197 started development in '99 too. It also has nothing to do with the Camaro and Challenger being years late to the party, again.
>Ford as typical was just recycling '70s shit until they could no longer get away with it.
The Challenger was a joke by the '80s when they were turned into gay ass rebadged imports then disappeared into the wind like a fart. The F-bodies presented no threat after '02. Your logic makes no sense, the S197 was in development since the New Edge facelift on the SN95 then announced in January of '03 just months after the f-bodies demise. There was no cross town competition that forced Ford into a new platform. They already had plans to modernize the Mustang for the next gen.

>>

You said print ads didn't mention it outright then parroted Shelby's opinion about the base car twice. Where did you supposedly say it was common sentiment in those two posts?
>>28889588
Some people just can't admit they're wrong Anon.

>>28889595
did you not read the latter half of my first post you quoted where i said it was a common sentiment at the time?

Manufacturers don't give out freebees at shows much anymore either.

obvious bait, but I wanted to post this anyway.

THE LEGEND!

Too bad it's a sedan.
2 door box-top Fairmonts are sexy AF when done right. The Futura's can even be made to look pretty mean.

That's because the prior generation of Mustang (1974-78) was a Ford Pinto in fancy dress.

Vs the Fairmont in fancy dress (?)

Dang
Apparently more of us get boners for the Fairmont than I had thought.
Windsor 302 was an option in 78 and 79
>>
>>28889616
You tried to attribute a single man's opinion of the base car to a public that bought more Mustangs in that same year than any car has sold in its first year, you're also excluding the V8 outsold the I6 by far in '65. So it's seemingly far fetched that his opinion was public sentiment considering the 500k + units moved, the majority being V8s.

They're way cooler than any mustang. Dad had a 79 2 door box top with a 302 when I was a kid in the mid 90's.

A few years ago I passed on a 2 door box top zephyr simply because I had too many projects on the go. Kicking my ass now because they've basically become unobtanium. They're either all completely fucked or have been turned into drag cars.

I love Foxbodys, but I like mustangs the least.

>Too bad it's a sedan.
That's where you're wrong bucko.
Matter of taste I know, but I personally prefer the sedan and specifically sought one. Same wheelbase as the 2dr by the way.

It's getting a built 302 and a TKX installed, 8.8 rear with LSD, and a full suspension overhaul. It's going to become my summer cruiser.

leaving the column shifter in place for the swap?
>>
>>28890629
Nah, I'm going to grab a repro Mustang column from LMR and paint it to match to cover the hole. Will be replacing the steering shaft and installing a flaming river rack at the same time. Just decided to go all in.

I've also got a new old stock 6 gauge bezel for an 91 Capri Turbo that I'm going to install with a Dakota Digital or NVU gauge cluster so I get a proper tach and keep a "factory" look.

Nice brother!!
When you have time, perhaps start a thread on the car.
There's a lot of Fairmont/Zephyr fans here, perhaps even Granadas too!
