There's no reason to buy a RWD sports car over an AWD one in the current year if its offered. Slightly more weight for way more grip, way faster 0-60, way faster and safer in rain and snow and rough terrain and on stuff like the BMWS you can even turn it fully off if you want.I'm actually surprised it took manufacturers so long to realise.

It's called preference. Not everyone keeps one eye on the road and another on a stat sheet when they're driving. When you grow up you might understand.
>>28877559just turn off the awd then lil bro
>>28877561why carry the extra weight around if I'm just going to use rwd
>>28877562it's worth it even if you were to only turn it on when launching the car and in snow and rain and it is faster on track if you want to use it there too
>>28877565yes I'm sure it is

>>28877489Manufacturers don't offer AWD manual vehicles besides the GR Corolla and the WRX and not all AWD is created equal. This should be the hirearchy:1. >>28877527>there are still "AWD is a handicap" copers in current yearBMW was right to move to xDrive in their performance models. It's barely more weight but you get a car with much more real world grip, faster to 60 and in the quarter, all basically without detriment to handling or braking.

My current car is RWD but AWD is best and I prefer it overall. No need a be a homo about it though as it's mostly due to preference.
>>28877624>Is there an engineering reason why the manual transmission isn't available on the AWD model?>No. The BMW M3 and M4 are designed to be a puristic and weight-optimized configuration. So we didn't see a merit in adding the heavier, rather complex M xDrive system to the manual.https://www.bmw-m.com/en/topics/magazine-article-pool/bmw-m3-m4-stickshift.html

AWD is good for some things, but...It is on modern sports cars because everyone demanded power and 0-60 times to the point that the idiots buying them couldn't handle them with RWD.As usual spec sheet excel nerds ruin fun things.
>>28877686This AWD is what id want if buying a sports car.RWD in mild rain = insurance claim or deadAWD in mild rain = WRC wannabee.

I wish the brz had Subaru AWD
>>28877773Anon, the point is to race it at the drag strip. The problem is that most purpose built drag cars are not street legal. It's convenient to have a car that does both legally.
>>28877780OP mentioning safety was a dead giveaway
Okey but isn't AWD more tire and allignment sensitive?
>>28877910There are many types of AWD. Viscus coupling like Subaru/Honda will be very sensitive because they turn rotation differences into head for their limited slip action, so different sized tires will overheat them and once that fluid is cooked, it's coooked.clutch disk based diffs require a lot of maintenance anyways but are the best we can do besides 1motor per wheel. Torsens, electronically controllable clutch pack diffs and planetary diffs are the most resilient and more or less act like open diffs as far as maintenance goes, but arent as balls to wall good on the track as other diff types.Part time AWD can usually disconnect the optional drive wheels too protect itself if it detects a problem with tire size.
>>28878033Which AWD drive system is the heaviest?
>>28878068Dunno for sure. I do know that an STI trans/front diff is about 230 lbs wet, which is probably about 170 lbs more than most RWD transmissions, but on the flip side a STI trans is built like a tank and they handle upwards of 750 ft lbs of torque if driven without flat foot shifting. I suspect good manual audi transmissions are in a similar ballpark for weight and power capacity but I haven't looked into it and would be pleased if any anons have good resources about how they work/are constructed as I'm considering a an older diesel manual audi as a second vehicle myself.

>>28879304they would all be faster with an AWD system adding only 50kg>>28877673yes AWD cars are way faster 0-60 because they have way more grip. Like 0.4 seconds, massive difference
>>28879314>they would all be faster with an AWD systemThey would be heavier and the steering would feel more deadened. Most AWD's have power steering. Not what I would want. And I don't care how fast my sportscar is. It's fast enough for me.

>>28879480>higher fuel consumption

>>28879686You believe that only because you've never gone full out. Every car understeers, some just do it more than others.
>>28877489I'm not paid to set lap times. Why do I care if a car is faster but arguably less fun. Just to add to your argument to show you how retarded it is:>why would anyone buy an ice performance car when an electric performance car is way faster.
>>28877489awd is this weird mix of FF and RWD and i dont like it
>>28879690>Every car understeers, bad driver detectedi bet you think you are supposed to turn the wheel faster to go faster around corners lmao
>>28879703Quit projecting. We're talking about driving at the limit. RWD cars can understeer but sometimes that's a good thing. The problem comes when you turn into a corner, put your foot down and even though you're lined up with the exit, the car still rears away from the apex. This takes practice to avoid in a RWD car but is nearly impossible to avoid in FWD and AWD. The best you can do is compensate by left foot braking or pulling the handbrake.
my rs3 8y2 drives beautifully
>>28879690yes every car understeers just like every car explodes if you use it wrong enough.
>>28879722I agree with everything you said, but in an awd car with rear-biased awd and a 50/50 or even 40f/60r weight distribution, they behave more like rwd cars on steroids coming out of a corner. Your typical audi/subaru etc is gonna understeer because they usually put a fuck ton of weight over the front axle and have some gay torque split. So in theory an awd car *can* just be a better rwd car, but in practice manufacturers have too many engineering constraints to make that possible. I know evs are gay etc etc. But my mach e has a 60r/40f torque split due to the rear motor being bigger, and the weight distribution is 50/50 with all the mass being centered between the wheels. I almost ate shit the first day I got it because I was not even remotely expecting it to behave that much like a rwd car. If it wasnt the lack of noise, no manual, and electronic nannies constantly interfering it would genuinely be one of the most fun vehicles i've driven.
>Bench racersEnjoy your understeer.
>>28881942That’s not how torque split works you fucking dork. Jesus Christ…
>>28881942You've only driven ugly, slow, gay, BORING bullshits; we get it
>>28877489>no reason to buy a RWS sports carIs fun not a reason?
>snownever have it>raina unicycle would have enough grip for normal driving
>>28877503All you need is a fwd k20 with proper vtec actually….
I had an awd with aws and it was fun but whenever I pushed it the aws made me instinctively want to countersteer so it made spirited driving awkward beyond a certain point. My rwd was really dialled in and I could rotate it on the nose through corners and it felt so good grabbing a gear out of corners, but the LSD would hook up unpredictably in the wet if I got off the throttle during a corner also double wishbones all round so the rear suspension would de-squat at the same time. I can't win either way. I feel like some of you guys are either top tier drivers or don't actually drive spiritedly and just love having a car that's faster on paper.
>>28881953Oh wise retard of the lake, please emerge from your bath of caked on jizz and explain to me how torque split works. Because there are many different awd systems that handle torque split differently. So I'd love to hear this. Or are you so estrogen-filled that you're now mentally incapable of understanding what a generalization is?
>>28879722>This takes practice to avoid in a RWD car but is nearly impossible to avoid in FWD and AWD.Its only a problem for poorfag AWD with open diffs. GTR, Evo and STI with DCCD, real AWD cars, will behave like a RWD in this situation.
>>28877489I would honestly rather have fwd than awd.
