brit, cross shopping between an VAG/Audi/Skoda with a 2.0 TDI and the Mazda3/6 skyativ.
They both look to be in very low tax and insurance brackets, so its just a matter of servicing costs (in Britain) and if the cost of diesel has caught up with their MPG gains, especially for either doing moon miles or virtually none.

My turdgen Firebird slips and slides whenever the road is even remotely damp and I give it some gas. Is this really normal? Granted it's on chinesium summer tires but I don't think it should be that terrible considering they stick pretty well as long as the surface is dry.
>>
evidently the transmission oil I put into my 94 geo tracker's transmission that was supposed to be yellow metal safe, is not in fact yellow metal safe. I've been running it for like 15k miles now. How fucked am I? How can I tell how much damage I've done without dropping the transmission?
>>
>>28878605
Checked your tires and alignment? Can't see how even the largest turd gen can overwhelm a set of ditch finders on a greasy surface
>>
>>28878679
Tires are last September new and the car has been doing this as soon as I got them. I've had an alignment done last March or somewhere around that time but I guess I can do another one.
>>
>>28878565
Modern diesels are a waste of time, servicing costs are likely negligible between the two. Get the Mazda.
>>
>>28878675
doubtful any damage was done, drain and replace with the right stuff and you'll likely be ok. if not there's not sense worrying about it now.
>>
>>28878675
I went longer this way, I think it's GL5 when GL4 is called for that eats synchros? My synchros still kind of worked when it was warm, if you have a cable throttle it shouldn't be hard to get good enough at timing your shifts that it won't matter.
>>
>>28878747
yeah I put GL5 in, that claimed it was yellow metal safe and now everything I'm reading says it's horse shit. The transmission still shifts and all, some gears aren't 100% smooth but it's not like it feels like it's going to grenade itself. Then again this is my first manual car so it's not like I have much to compare against.

>>28878738
This is what I'm hoping for. I'm going to shell out for the GL4 and cross my fingers.
>>
>>28878694
Could be your tires are over inflated or it's because summer tires do not have channels to dispel the rain from the tread
>>
when I hear about old cars they'll say something like "it has a 6.5 liter v8 that makes 150 horse power" and that's like nothing today. my 2 liter 4 banger makes that and it's not even very high strung by modern standards.

what specifically changed in engine design that lets them get way more power in a smaller size?
>>
>>28879246
Fuel injection is much more efficient than carbs, variable valve timing and precise computer controlled ignition timing. Most engines are turbocharged now as well.
Also, in the 70s - 80s engines were completely choked out of having any performance by the ludicrous emissions standards for the day that technology took decades to catch up to.

I bought a dashcam off Amazon and am trying to figure out how to install the rear camera without a wire hanging off the ceiling all the way from the front of the car to the rear hatchback.

There are no convenient seams to tuck the wire into. Do I have to cut a hole in the ceiling liner fabric, snake the wire through, and then leave it slack along the hatch so that it doesn't tear loose whenever I open the back up?

Chrysler 2001 PT Cruiser, BTW.

>>
>>28879383
Is there not an edge on the headliner? Ive always just tucked it in to the headliner above the windshield, then along the drivers side and back. May need to remove A and C pillar trims for access. Hardest part was finding room to store the bundled up excess length of coax wire.
>>
>>28879403
Not for the outside edges. I have a sunroof and there's a tuckable edge around that, but that leaves about a foot in front and six feet behind it that have no place to tuck the wire.
>>
>>28879383
i would run it from the hatch down to the floor then under the carpet on the drivers side, you can take out the door sills to slip the wire under the carpet

Ideally, yes. A brand new or freshly rebuilt engine will shed tiny little fragments as the bearings and such bed in, so you should change the oil after 500 to 1000 miles to be rid of those fragments that will be floating around in your oil and filter.

I've mangled my OEM lugs over the years. Looking for a new set and I want to make sure I don't fuck up and make my wheels fall off while driving. My OEM is pic and it's a 2 piece flat design (i think). I haven't removed them in a while but I think the black washer is kind of loose and can jiggle around. The one I found on rockauto that looks similar is a one piece design though. I think it's just a solid piece of steel. I want to make sure that 2 piece design with the loose washer isn't critical because there are some like that on rockauto but they all look shittier with smaller lengths which I dont like. The one piece still has that flat washer base just not a separate piece.

Oem lugs on oem wheels often have a specific taper shape that matches the lug holes. While I can't reasonably help you find which lugs match your wheel, random "looks right" stuff from RA, Amazon, Ebay, and the wetback stores probably is nowhere close to an actual fit.

t. Is using improperly sized lugs on oem wheels and sees the aluminum being grinded out every time I remove the wheel

Post script: while it isnt the end of the world eventually what is going to happen, to my wheels, is the lug holes will be bored open so much that an actual proper fitting lug is impossible to get.

Of course actual better tires will help. People I know with the previous generation swear that the spoiler makes a big difference, even at very low speed. I about wrecked one when I was a noob.
It may be a placebo but I feel an increase in confidence with a tread pattern similar to this Michelin.
>>
>>28884948
Yep. Carbon buildup can lower the volume of the combustion chamber and increase the compression ratio, causing knock that you may not hear and/or preignition from glowing chunks. A correct plug in the next higher heat range (hotter plug) may be more appropriate for your type of driving conditions. A hotter plug may clean the combustion chambers over time and help keep them clean. “Top Engine Cleaner” is a product people seem to like but it is not cheap. Only made from cheap ingredients you can find at a hardware store and use at your own risk. Like ATF+MEK is what I’d use but I don’t want you to listen to me and break your shit. Change the plugs.

Are open differentials okay or should I swap for a LSD?
I like how it drives but can’t drift
>>
>>28886145
LSDs are great, but unless you're driving either at or past the limit semi-regularly, they're not really worth the time, effort, or money to install. I'd argue you'd be better off just buying a car that already has an LSD installed.
>>
>>28886187
i disagree, LSDs help immensely in normal driving especially when it's wet or the surface is loose, snow for example. it prevents your car getting stuck if one of the drive wheels happens to come off the ground. they really improve cornering at all speeds not just the limit, and they can somewhat help save on tire costs by preventing one-wheel peels. the downside is they need their fluid replaced more often than an open diff.

if the car has a factory lsd to install then it's usually worth it, if you have to open up the diff to install an aftermarket lsd that's when it gets to be too messy and technical for the average owner.
>>
A month ago, I finally got my driver's license along with a car that my parents gifted me. The thing is, after driving for a while, using the car's clutch so much has caused me horrible pain in my leg and foot. Am I doing something wrong? Or is this normal? Because every time I have to drive in my busy city, it's literally torture for me.

>>28886203
I've never really encountered a situation in a regular car doing regular car things that would have been *significantly* improved by an LSD, at least not in any way enough to make it worth buying and swapping one in myself. Not getting stuck also depends on the type of LSD, as a Torsen isn't going to help at all if one wheel is off the ground, or is on snow or ice. If you're doing regular car things, then corning performance is virtually irrelevant beyond turning circle, and one wheel peels aren't really a problem for regular driving. Think I've done it maybe once or twice when I didn't mean to, and even then it was only for a second or two before the shitbox gained grip once more. The additional tyre wear from that event is negligible. Clutch LSDs need more than just oil, and will need to have their clutches replaced at some point as they wear out, which is another negative for a regular car, and Viscous LSDs will eventually stop working, and are, as far as I'm aware, sealed units that are virtually non-serviceable for the average DIY'er.

Again, LSDs are great, but only if you get the full use case out of them. I'm very great full my Miata and M3 came with an LSD from factory, as it's very noticeable on track and when at the limit in general, but the times I'm just pottering around getting shopping or dropping someone off have never left me grateful for its company, and it did fuck all for me when it snowed and the roads were icy. New LSDs are very expensive, and OEM junkyard LSDs, while slightly cheaper, are somewhat of a gamble as to their condition, and both still require some considerable effort and time to install unless you're willing to pay some to do it.

So again, it depends on OP's use case. If he just wants to do the occasional drift in his daily, then you'd be better off just buying a car that already has an LSD installed. If it's a dedicated "fun" second car that you don't mind pumping money into, then fair enough go nuts.

I just wanted an excuse to bitch and moan here.
Was trying to find a newish 4runner after mine started showing its age (rust/corrosion around compressor and idle pulley) and suddenly it seemed like everything jumped up 5 or 10k+. Why the fuck are base models almost 40k? I'm seeing ones that are barely road worthy from the accidents they've been in going for 8,000. Its such bullshit. Now I'm stuck looking at Corollas and Camrys.
Also how are GMC terrains? Got in one and it felt alright but looking to how they are
>>
>>28887352
4runners carry not only a toyota tax but an offroad / 4x4 tax as well. they are plenty capable and reliable SUVs but the prices are hilariously retarded for what you get. you’d be surprised what you could sell yours for even if its in bad shape, as long as it runs someone will buy it.

> terrain
don’t, just don’t. these are reskinned equinoxes and the equinox is as disposable as they come. for whatever reason these cars eat engines like candy. i would avoid unless you really have no other option or are getting an amazing deal on one.
>>
>>28886393
the apex of any given corner doesn’t really change. once you identify the apex then the only thing that matters is max entry and exit speeds for the given car/surface/tire/driver. which will be dictated by the parts of the track around it, if the previous corner was a low speed hairpin, and you approach your current corner .25 miles away, there is a mathematical maximum speed your car can achieve in that time and still make the corner. it’s fairly easy to calculate the theoretical max if you have a reasonably good vehicle model.

and chances are, corners that youve added are similar to other corners so the AI can reference. “hey this is a 90 degree left hander with 4 degrees of banking, let’s find something close” and itll find turn 2 at indianapolis.

the AI can also perfectly apply brakes and throttle, with the optimum gradient to ensure smooth entry and exit. developers usually include some fudge factor tied to either skill rating or difficulty to make it more random. they probably also run sims in the loading screen to generate data.
>>
>>28887357
Someone was willing to offer me 5k without even a look at the car. I only turned him down once I realized the corrosion was around the engine because I didn't want to have anything fail on him. Were it not for the climate where I am, I'd have drove it til the engine fell out from under me.
Thanks for the terrain advice by the way. I'll just swap back to a car when I find one.
>>
What do i need to know about these things before i buy one?
Its just that some are like $100 and others are as cheap as $30 so im not sure.
The name suggests that it should be perfect for my car.

my small company recently had a PSA about not buying Amazon bargain bin chinese batteries because one caught fire in a company car and burnt it to a crisp. thankfully no one was inside.

when it comes to anything battery powered i tend to stick to brand names. Dewalt, Milwaukee, NOCO, Tender, whatever. At least if your Dewalt fails you can take it back to home depot or sue Dewalt, if your TREKURE fails they’ll just close up shop tomorrow and you’ll be SOL. There’s a reason almost all of the bargain bin Amazon crap has an attachment saying something like “don’t contact Amazon, contact us first when you have a problem” and its because Amazon could just drop them out at a moment’s notice. Amazon can’t do the same to NOCO.

>>28887397
$5k without a look is probably someone looking for a cheap offroader. their budget is probably $20k but they figure they can put $15k of parts into yours and call it a day. ultimately your call on if you’d wanna sell, someone who’s offering that probably knows what theyre getting into.

Yes, overfilling any fluid is bad and will cause excess pressure build up inside whatever housing the fluid is held in.

Oil for example for an engine, if you overfill an oil change it'll cause excess load on the internals and bog performance down.

The rear diff is another example because a lot of pressure generates inside of it. When there's too much fluid with no space to go, it'll just expand and put pressure on the spider gears making noise.

I have a tiny bit of experience with SRS lights from wrenching on my VWs,
Every time you boot up your ECU (so also the SRS module, I think), it checks every part of the SRS system - (pyromatic) seatbelt tensioners, airbags and the passenger airbag / baby launcher disabling switch. It checks for the proper resistance even. if anything is out of spec, it throws a code and illuminates the SRS light, disabling the entire system (as far as I know). At least on VW, you can't get rid of that code with a regular code reader, you need to use a specialized diagnostic interface or take it to the dealer. It should be the same with other vehicle manufacturers, but you're welcome to try if resetting the codes / disconnecting both battery terminals and touching them together gets rid of it.

To prevent the light from illuminating, you need to figure out what kind of resistance the offending part has and wire in a dummy resistor. Don't use a multimeter for this, though, as I've heard that the voltage used to measure the resistance could in theory blow an airbag / a seatbelt tensioner.

the numbers they give you are the largest engines they tested them at. realistically it’s a basic engineering 101 DC circuits problem, if your jumper can’t provide an equivalent amount of amperage to start your car then it’s not good enough. check your current battery’s CCA, and make sure your jumper exceeds that.

if you have some crazy dual alternator medium duty truck (3500+) then you probably need something closer to 2000 amps of output. otherwise anything in the 1000-1500 amp range will be fine
>>
>>28879574
Yes, absolutely. The first couple of changes on a new engine should be a bit shorter than recommended intervals. I don’t care what people parrot online, a new engine is going to be breaking in for a few thousand miles. Depending on the vehicle and how much it’s worth to you, a great way to measure that is by doing an oil analysis on it during the first few changes. You’ll see high than normal wear metals because of the aforementioned break in period.

Has anyone put a modern Prius drive train into whatever old shit box line a PT cruiser to see if it gets the same MPG? Or like a Chrysler Leberon?
>>
>>28888499
Thanks for the detailed insight! The little I know about SRS is that I really should leave it alone and ask for help before I Griswold my way into deploying the curtains lol.

I was able to use an OBD II scanner with SRS code reading, and verified that the codes are from the open circuits, and not an unrelated fault. Connecting the leads clear the codes, which is good for diagnostic but looks silly without the rest of the seat assembly to actually use 'em. After sending the erase command, the system checks just replace the cleared codes so I think I can discard an electronic solution as possibility for now.

With the seats disassembled as they are, I should be able to peel back the cloth seat cover, look inside, and try to gleam any info from the assembly. If I cross my eyes and click my heels enough, Ford might throw me a bone and tell me the specs.

the atf in my obs f150 is full but pretty dark, so I want to change it. possibly related, the truck wants to stall out in reverse. what are the odds I can fix that with fresh fluid and maybe a new filter too? it would be a shame to put fresh juice in only to have to dump it out again because it needs a shift solenoid or even worse, a torque converter

is torqueing a meme? i mean, if i'm changing my struts/springs, whats wrong with making them 'pretty tight', like the way i took them off? i can understand plastic stuff, seals/gaskets, or directly affecting the engine but everything, what's so wrong with no using a torque wrench?

Depends on what the part being torqued down is designed to do, if it's a stretch bolt, and/or what material it's beaning thread into.

>The part
Some bolts will need to be tightened as much as possible without pinching, binding, or damaging whatever it's holding which isn't impossible to gauge by hand, but better safe than sorry in most cases

>Stretch bolts
Used for things such as your head, stressed members of the chassis or suspension, etc., etc. They are designed to stretch a specific amount under the calculated torque/degree setting, and as such can only be used once and must be replaced if disturbed.

>Thread material
If you're threading into aluminium or any other soft material, then factory torque settings are useful for making sure that you don't strip out or damage the threads, which is easier to do than you might think.

For most things that just hold an unstressed part in place, you don't need a torque wrench, but they're certainly not a meme.
>>
>>28889484
There are a lot of suspension bolts that you probably can't put a torque wrench on, not without a full-body lift. Just tighten them commensurate with how difficult they were to remove, and move on.
A basic rule of thumb is that the smaller the correct torque value is, the more important it is to use the correct torque value.

a 1992 lebaron weighs 3k lbs. adding the hybrid system will only add weight without making it aerodynamically better, and the 2008 prius is already aerodynamic and weighs less than the lebaron at 3k lbs. ill assume the engine and transmission are a wash and you probably have 300 lbs of batteries. any gains you could get in efficiency would be offset by the extreme effort of doing this, and then at the end you don’t even really have something cool. it’s like iron duke swapping a C4 corvette.

at best you’d make the Lebaron more efficient. but you’re not beating the prius unless you literally put that powetrain in a gokart (or a Fiat 500)
>>
>>28889529
i remember the factory manual on my toyota engine called for an insanely high torquw spec for the water pump bolts so i just went with what felt right. paid off as well because i realised the thermostat housing bolts also felt stupidly tight despite being nowhere near the torque spec. then i found another service manual covering a different car that used the same engine and it had a much lower torque spec for both.

I have a Buick with a 2.4 Ecotec with 130k miles and I'm going to be doing a few coolant drain and fills soon. I know for this particular model you have to fill the coolant via the expansion tank, so I'll mix it in with the first cycle of drain/fill, drive like normal for a day, drain, and then replace the final couple quarts of coolant. I'm hesistant to use any of these bodges/stopleaks. It should be fine if you flush it out. Keeping that stuff in the engine for too long will just make your seals too soft to really seal. They're okay for when you need to get to work while leaking from an old seal thats impossible to get to, not so great for preventative maintenance.

Generally, a reconditioned seal won't really stay reconditioned for long. If your cars old, and you're worried about coolant leaking, check your coolant every two days. Once you do find a leak, you can do some preventative maintenance and replace all the relevant hoses.
>>
>>28889197
it's worth a try as it's easy and cheap, I would drain and replace, drive a few miles to circulate, then drain and replace again (mityvac in dipstick is useful for the second go so you dont have to drop the pan again) that'll get 75% of the fluid.

Does the truck have a good strong idle? The stalling could be unrelated to the transmission. Could just need a tune up.

>Leaving it to idle for anything more than a few seconds and it cuts out
If it's not your IAC look to your lambdas.
Start the engine and check your revs at idle, if they fluctuate before stalling it's likely one of your Lambda's is on the way out which is in turn tripping your IAC. Another symptom is 'lulls' in power when driving. If it's a sudden drop it's more likely your IAC.

If you're replacing one Lambda, replace them all, they're one of those components that has a shared lifetime and you'll find yourself back on the ramps in a few weeks if you don't.

Here's what it looked like when mine happened, engine stalls out over the last 30s: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pDB-cZB9qEwaHlEEMj1iocem0NZY8X3w/view

alternately remove the entire tie rod assembly, put the outer tie rod on a drill press and drill and tap a hole in the back for a grease zerk. as long as you keep them together, the alignment won't change. then just grease it up every oil change and it'll last forever even with a bad boot

as I've just come to find, my car has a huge dent that was covered with a layer of bondo, that was literally half an inch thick in some spots. I found this out because the bondo had cracked and I chipped a piece off out of curiosity. I sanded what I could and now I'm left with this.

I didn't actually plan that far ahead. What should I do now? I soldered the holes shut, but now I need to get the general shape back. I don't think using bondo again is the right way to go. I had hoped I could roughly get it back in shape with a hammer and dolly but unfortunately I don't actually have enough access to get a dolly up in there, only my fingers.

Possible, but atleast sound wise car sounds normal. So my educated guess is that it should be getting fuel in all cylinders to run properly.
There is also smell of petrol in the exhaust afterwards. Im not sure if low pressure would affect idle or smell though.
I also doubt that me taking out fuel relays to make oil pressure could cause this issue, unless.
>immobilizer not reading the key
well car sat for those 3 years with no battery so its possible the key was disassociated from the car.
the car is late00s design so there is some electrical fuckery.
>>
>>28894586
buy an OBD2 scanner, they're cheap and very useful, I keep one in every car I own.
I would start by reading codes. Go into live data and check any fuel pressure ratings that might be there, map sensor, maf sensor, etc.
if nothing shows up there, get a fuel pressure gauge and see what happens to the fuel pressure when you crank, when it starts, and when it runs. it should jump up to 30-60psi depending on the car when you crank, and hold that level.
another thing you can try is unplug the MAF sensor then start the car, does that make it run? (keep in mind this will give you a MAF code when you read codes because it won't see it, you'll have to clear that code to get anything accurate)
>>
>>28894593
I should.
Could you recommend me any decent software for it though?

if you want something that will do 100% of what you need on a specific make of cars I recommend launch creader, but they only work on a single brand of cars: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=launch+creader+elite
if you want a dongle style, this will cover 95% of what you need on most cars, but you have to use a phone app with it which is clunky:
https://www.amazon.com/TOPDON-Bluetooth-Diagnostic-Performance-Bidirectional/dp/B0C3QQYQ1B/

if you just need something really basic a $20 one from amazon will do the job of pulling basic codes.

So pretty recently I've noticed a noise from my transmission.
It is making a rattling noise when in neutral and the clutch out. When I push the clutch in the noise goes away. The noise gets worse if there is an electrical load like the fan or headlights running.
It's a Honda and I did the clutch, flywheel, and input shaft bushing 13-15k miles ago and it was perfect until now.
Shifting gear is still smooth and there are no noises I can notice while driving.

Is my tranny fucked?
If so my main concern is, can I drive it as is until it dies then swap it, or is there a risk of something breaking catastrophically and intruding into the passenger compartment turning my nuts into jello?

throw out bearing
you can probably get years out of it before it gets bad enough to cause real problems, i wouldn't worry about it.

even one owner, garage kept cars aren’t always guaranteed to be good. your best bet is to have a checklist that you go through each time you look at a car

1. research year make model trim. what are some common issues with this car? what prices are similar ones selling for at a similar mileage?

2. what type of lot is selling this. is it Dave’s used cars on 8 mile in Detroit? is it Big Honking Honda Chain? is it a mom and pop Chrysler dealer? is it a Mexican that repairs cars in his driveway? your experiences will vary widely with each one. research the location as much as the car itself

3. check carfax or autocheck reports against the VIN for accidents, owner history, anything weird or unusual. no VIN = immediate no buy.

4. is there a documented maintenance or inspection history? not all DIYers log things like oil changes, and not all shops do it either.

5. visually inspect the exterior, is it in good condition, or are there rust/scratches/chips

6. how is the interior. does it smell? do the seats move correctly? is it clean and obviously well maintained? does the HVAC work? push as many buttons as possible, so you can verify everything works.

7. go for a test drive. are there any creaks or rattles or squeaks? does the steering feel correct? do the brakes work? does the engine feel bogged or the transmission shift poorly? does 4WD make weird noises? do the mirrors move? do the windows roll down? etc.

8. (optional) find a mechanic to 3rd party inspect it, or buy a CPO vehicle. CPO vehicles typically come with extended warranties which can protect you beyond the factory warranty.

and keep in mind that you can do all of this and still buy a lemon. but you can filter out probably 90% of the bad/overpriced cars by following these steps

Sure, but even if I check, how would you know if they repaired it correctly and not just used cheap ass chink parts.
I had camaro that gave me shit for months eventually I sold it to a mechanic that flipped it over.
And I got to know him later on, and he told me my car was the shitiest flip he had done, he mange to make $30 of profit from it, because everything about it was shitty repair just to be sold.

I hope so
I think I got it mixed up. I thought a bad clutch release bearing made noise with the pedal in and my problem was the input shaft
It sucks because that was the only part I bought that was oem. The rest was aftermarket stuff

if you replaced the input shaft bushing, there is also a bearing on the input shaft that could be bad. i've had cars make noise like this literally for years and years, so i wouldn't sweat it until it starts sounding like there's a bunch of marbles in there, the rest of the car could grenade before then anyway.

Oil in one spark plug well and engine misfiring, how fucked am I? Are there things I could try before checking gasket or is that guaranteed to be the problem?
>>
>>28895121
Are there gaskets that go around the spark plug holes on the valve cover? You might get lucky and only need a new valve cover gasket set.

Yes, I'll replace this. There are many videos from Filipinos I can follow.

you don’t know, and that’s why buying a car is a risk in itself, and why many people just buy or lease new. there are a lot of people who can barely breathe without thinking let alone drive, and these people are responsible for also maintaining their cars.

unless they saved receipts for every single repair in the car’s history. most people don’t do this unless youre autistic like me. you have to somewhat make a judgement call based on your perception of the owner (if a private sale) or use the history thats available on carfax

low mileage cars without accidents that are still in warranty or just out of warranty likely haven’t had any work done where the previous owner could skimp out and be cheap. im talking 3 years old and under 40k miles. if it’s certified pre owned it very rarely will have shit wrong with it unless you’re buying from a scumbag dealer
